Send us a textJoin us for a nostalgic journey through the decades with Ken Talve, a gifted guitarist and my bandmate in the Ken Talve Trio. Ken opens up about his musical evolution, starting from his high school days when he was mesmerized by the blues and iconic bands like the Allman Brothers. Together, we reminisce about our days in the city lofts, endless rehearsals, and unforgettable club gigs that shaped our vibrant musical careers. With candid tales and a shared love for creating original music, we reflect on past collaborations and our continued passion for music in the Ken Talve Trio.Have you ever wondered how a seasoned musician can gauge a band's quality without even hearing them play? We explore this intriguing skill and celebrate the impressive journey of my daughter, Kara, a Berklee graduate who has made waves in the industry with her award-winning compositions for projects like The Simpsons. From working with renowned drummer Chad Wackerman to Kara's blossoming career, the episode highlights the joys and challenges of nurturing talent in the music world, emphasizing creativity that flourishes without undue pressure. As we traverse through the phases of a musician's life, we share humorous anecdotes about gear talk, elusive stage setups, and the rise of tribute bands. With reflections on the changing landscape of live music from past to present, there's a bittersweet nostalgia for the camaraderie of earlier gigging days. We wrap up with thoughts on recent performances, the struggles of self-criticism, and a personal decision to step back from the stage, all shared with humor and a heartfelt farewell. Join us as we celebrate the journey, the passion, and the ever-evolving tapestry of a musician's life.Support the show

Esta semana, dedicamos un nuevo capítulo de Rebelión Sónica, íntegramente al disco “Zappa '88: The Last U.S. Show” del fundamental guitarrista y compositor estadounidense, Frank Zappa. “Zappa ’88: The Last U.S.

In this interview, keyboardist and composer, Steve Hunt talks about his upcoming release entitled CONNECTIONS. This new album features an allstar lineup of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Colauita, Virgil Donati, Nate Wood, Evan Marien, Jimmy Johnson, Eric Marienthal, Billy Cobham, and many others. We also talked about his work with Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and others. Pianist Steve Hunt, throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful... Steve credits jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk as strong influences to his jazz style. During his formative years he studied with concert pianist Albert Hirsh, and jazz pianists Sid Davis and Lyle Mays who all helped form his lighting fast technique and unique style. Steve later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his study of jazz. After recording and performing with top Boston jazz musicians such as Randy Roos and Tiger Okoshi, and leading his own jazz fusion band, Steve spent the next ten years on the road with several renowned jazz artists such as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Angela Bofill, Tom Brown, and Allan Holdsworth. Steve's international touring took him to countries such as Japan, Israel, Austria, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia, as well as major cities in the US and Canada. During this time, Steve also served as musical director for the famous touring Jazz Explosion where he led the trio which headlined artists Freddy Hubbard, Gato Barbaira, Stanley Turentine, Ramsey Lewis, violinist Noel Pointer, Kenny G, and the late Phillis Hyman. The Jazz Explosion performed in major concert venues including the Circle Star in San Francisco, Beacon Theater in New York, Universal Theater in Los Angeles, and Hammersmith Odium in London. Steve's desire towards challenging himself is no where more evident than with his long time association with Allan Holdsworth, whose progressive and innovative style has helped Steve to further his own musical development. Holdsworths more recent CD releases including Secrets, Wardencliff Tower, and Hard Hat Area, as well as featuring Steve on keyboards, also include Steves original tunes "Maid Marion," "Joshua," and "Dodgy Boat." While touring with Holdsworth, Steve was featured in the Japanese edition of Keyboard Magazine (July 1991 and March 1993). Other noteworthy recording contributions by Steve include two of Stanley Clarkes CD releases If This Bass Could Only Talk and East River Drive. Steve reached a major milestone, producing his solo jazz CD From Your Heart and Your Soul (BMI). For the promotional release tour of his new CD, Steve organized a quintet including Gregg Bendian, John Lockwood, Ole Mathisen, and Bruce Bartlett.

Dave Goodman. Jazz critic John Clare has described Dave Goodman as ‘one of the leading drummers in the country' and ‘[one of] the most intriguing drummers recording anywhere'. At just eighteen, Dave received an invitation to join the renowned Mike Nock Quartet and, at twenty, came second in the prestigious National Jazz Awards. Today, he is, undoubtedly, one of Australia's most important jazz drummers. This is evident in the long list of luminaries – both Australian and international – with whom Dave has worked: Joe Lovano, Paul Bollenback, Bernie McGann, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Vince Jones and Mark Isaacs, to name just a few. At present, he is a key member of several of Australia's finest ensembles, including Ten Part Invention, Kevin Hunt Trio, Steve Barry Quartet, and Matt Keegan Trio. ‘Dave's infectious love of music, his dedication to jazz drumming and his melodic approach to the drumset have been a source of inspiration to me for twenty years,' Matt says. Combining technical mastery with profound musicality, Dave's drumming is celebrated for its powerful melodic sensibility and, most importantly, its distinctive voice. Chief influences include Jack DeJohnette, Vinnie Colaiuta and Andrew Gander. ‘Each of these guys come out of Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes in their own way,' Dave explains. 'I love them fundamentally because they are uniquely creative and original in playing only the essence of what each piece of music requires. I aspire to this in my own work.' Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Dave is a genuine innovator: relentlessly imaginative and constantly evolving. His professional experience has been augmented with extensive study, both formal and informal. He holds a First Class Honours degree in Jazz Performance and a PhD in Jazz Drumset Performance Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and has studied under several world-class musicians, including Billy Hart, Joe Morello, Jim Chapin and Chad Wackerman. As a bandleader and composer in his own right, Dave counts numerous creative projects under his belt. Previous undertakings include Dave Goodman's Strange Loop, featuring guitarist James Muller; eleven-piece ensemble Game 1A: Chess; Ad Infinitum, which, in 2002, was commissioned for a recording by the ABC's Jim McLeod's Jazztrack; and the Dave Goodman Quartet, which performed at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. As an educator, Dave draws on over twenty years of teaching experience from previous appointments at prominent institutions such as Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and his pedagogical vision is ‘to help aspiring drummers to realistically evaluate and improve their own rate of progress over time by establishing and adhering to a regular practise routine that includes technique, repertoire, improvisation, and performance studies'. Dave plays Sonor Drums, Bosphorus Cymbals, Remo Drumheads, Vater Drumsticks, DW Pedals & Hardware, and Roc-N-Soc Thrones exclusively. In the mid to late 1980’s, if it was a Tuesday night at the Baked Potato in North Hollywood, it was Los Lobotomys night. The original band, an offshoot of David Garfield’s band Karizma, consisted of some of the best musicians in L.A., included Jeff Porcaro, Lenny Castro, Nathan East, Brandon Fields, Steve Lukather and David Garfield. Lines formed outside the Spud’s door with fans who wanted to experience the band’s instrumental rock, jazz fusion and be-bop. However, the Lobotomys’ door was always open and many guests appears with them throughout the years, including Carlos Vega, Joe Sample, Vinnie Colaiuta, David Sanborn, Gregg Bissonette, Sheila E., Marcus Miller, Larry Carlton, Slash, Pat Travers, David Paich, Bobby Kimball, Alex Acuña, Chad Wackerman and many others. Fast forward to 2018 and the band is still going strong and has reinvented its lineup. With a new album on the way, Los Lobotomys is back as version 3.0 and consists of its founder, David Garfield, along with Lenny Castro on percussion, John Peña on bass, Chad Wackerman on drums and the latest addition, guitarist Doug Bossi. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome back our old friend David Garfield and guitarist Doug Bossi.
