Join the She Wasn't Born Yesterday Facebook Group where we chat further about this topic with Janet and Amelia along with hundreds of other members in the group. See you there!  About the Guest:  Kristina Keneally is the former New South Wales Premier and Labour Senator. She was dedicated to public service, with a focus on tackling significant issues such as stillbirth, a cause she holds close following her personal experience. Keneally is the CEO of the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation and has played an instrumental role in creating awareness and instigating change around the underrepresented issue of stillbirth in Australia.  Episode Summary:  In this episode of “She Wasn't Born Yesterday,” former NSW Premier and Labour Senator Kristina Keneally joins hosts Amelia and Janet for a moving conversation about pregnancy loss, and how to move forward after such tragic experiences. The episode tackles the complexities of stillbirth, an issue Keneally has committed to addressing both personally and politically.  Keneally shares her own story of pregnancy loss and the challenges in dealing with stillbirth publicly while serving in the public eye. The discussion covers aspects ranging from the emotional effects on families, to medical practices, cultural sensitivities, and legislative changes in Australia. Including the positive impact of a Senate inquiry into stillbirth, initiated by Keneally, and its resulting strides towards a national action plan to reduce stillbirth rates—an initiative the guest has passionately campaigned for.  Key Takeaways:  Pregnancy loss, specifically stillbirth, is a significant but underrepresented issue in family life, with six babies a day stillborn in Australia.  Kristina Keneally's personal experience with stillbirth has fueled her dedication to raising awareness and pushing for public health reforms.  Keneally's advocacy led to a Senate inquiry into stillbirth, bringing the issue into the national discourse and resulting in a national action plan aiming to reduce stillbirth rates in Australia.  Cultural sensitivity and the varying responses to stillbirth across different communities highlight the complexity of addressing this issue.  Support for parents experiencing stillbirth, such as paid parental leave and bereavement counseling, is still inconsistent and requires more attention and standardisation.  Notable Quotes:  “It's like I joined a club I didn't know existed, I don't really want to be a member of, and I can't get out of it.”  “If you can survive giving birth to your child who has died, and you can bury her…you've got an inner strength that all the other slings and arrows of life, you suddenly like, you know what? I've survived something far worse than this.”  “Christina Keneally wears same dress twice.”—Reflecting the often trivial public scrutiny faced by women in politics.  “My third child owes his life to the autopsy that was performed on his older sister.”  Resources:  Stillbirth Foundation Australia website: Referenced for further information on stillbirth advocacy and resources.  Be sure to listen to the full episode for an in-depth view into the heartrending topic of stillbirth and how incredible people like Kristina Keneally are working tirelessly to create change. In this episode Jeannie discusses the recent preselection of Senator Christina Keneally to replace outgoing Labour MP Chris Hayes in the Western Sydney electorate of Fowler, despite local lawyer Tu Le's intention to run as a candidate. Labors "political class" have based their arguments on the idea that Keneally has "executive talent" - something which Jeannie challenges. Discrimination in Western Sydney areas makes housing affordability even more difficult and, as Jeannie point out, it is this same political class – crossing both parties - that is benefiting from Sydney's property bubble, as well as the plethora of parasitic industries ( real estate agents, developers, investors, lobby groups etc) that together make property Australia's biggest industry - according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia. Before they wore physical masks during the pandemic our leaders wore metaphorical masks to hide their sinister motives and also their double standards. But we are now increasingly seeing underneath that mask as it slips off our leaders. We explore this on this week's Tim's News Explosion. With NSW and Victoria abanding covid zero, the Premiers are now tying vaccination rates to ending lockdown. Last week NSW Gladys Berejiklian revealed that modest freedoms would only be restored for fully vaccinated residents once the state reaches 70% of the eligible population double dosed, though her Deputy John Barilaro has now said that most restrictions on the unvaccinated would drop at 80%.  NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard finally said something sensible that the fresh air is the safest place to be, yet the NSW Government still mandates face masks outside in lockdown areas. Former Prime Minister was Tony Abbott issued with a $500 mask fine after being photographed and snitched on by a local in his Manly area. News Corporation media outlets Sky News Australia and Fox News in the US feature hosts and personalities who have been some of the most vocal against mask and vaccine mandates. Yet the New York Post owned by the company mandates masks in its offices and News Corp Australia will mandate the vaccine for workers at its printing presses. Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie claimed and she and other Australians are becoming “agitated” with “anti-vaxxers” and that they are "coming at you, lock, stock, and barrel". President Joe Biden announced an indirect vaccine mandate signing an executive order that US companies with 100 employees or more will need their employees vaccinated or to produce a negative covid test every week.  Californians will vote in tomorrow's gubernatorial recall election. Governor Gavin Newsom despite keeping the state in some form of lockdown for a year has overseen one of the highest covid death rates in the nation. The main Republican challenger is African-American radio host Larry Elder. Elder was abused by a white woman wearing a gorilla mask who tried to egg him. Elder has been endorsed by Hollywood actress and Harvey Weinstein victim Rose McGowan who has accused Newsom's wife of attempting to stop her going public about Weinstein.  In the UK Boris Johnson's Government has shelved plans to introduce vaccine passports at nightclubs and large events. Health Secretary Sajid Javid stated that they found there was no medical justification for vaccine passports though the government will still keep them as an option. Labor Senator and Former NSW Premier Kristina Keneally arguably the powerful opponent of the Australian nationalist and patriot movements is attempting to elbow out a daughter of Vietnamese migrants to save her political career attempting to parachute into a lower house seat in South Western Sydney at the expense of the local branch's preferred candidate. Keneally lives on the exclusive Scotland Island on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Keneally also authored an op-ed in May 2020 stating that migration should not return to pre-pandemic levels because they take Aussie jobs. This was also a view expressed about Asian migrants by former NSW Labor leader Michael Daley. On the pod this week: stealing valor, cringing out of our skin, Scott Morrison's climate spin and children used as political pawns.   Thanks to special guest show-notes author, podcast host Tom Lang. Anzac Biscuit Day Anzac day is becoming increasingly iffy, and the kids just aren’t feeling it any more. The government loves to pay lip service to the troops, and then turn around and do things like lend money to veterans using their pensions as collateral, and then not restore the pension after they pay it back. This is the inside of Evie’s mind on Anzac day. Did we mention Ben Roberts Smith won Father of the year back in 2013? ALLEGED sorry ALLEGED father of the year. I non-consensually drink your milkshake The government tried to make an education program about consent without using the word “consent”, which went predictably poorly. Alan Tudge, the relevant Minister, has so far not gone to jail for anything, and is newsworthy for a variety of reasons, including alleged bullying. The Safe Schools program, which tackled LGBTIQ+ issues and other important topics of sexuality and identity, outraged conservatives and was ended in most areas except for Victoria. Scott Morrison apparently hated existing sex education programs so much that he sent his daughters to a private school. Happy Corporate Greenwashing Day It was Earth Day on the 22nd of April, which was originally started among the civil rights movement in the 60s. Environmental Journalists like Emily Atkin from Heated can tell you about the corporate greenwashing festival this day has become. Scott Morrison thoroughly embarrassed the nation at the Climate Leaders Summit, with a classic combination of incompetence, spin, and lies. Even fluffy morning TV show host (and alleged father of the year) Kochy called Angus Taylor on our pathetic climate targets. Kristina Kerscher Keneally’s Kaptive Kid Korner The notorious KKK visited the Tamil Asylum seeker family that was deported from their loving community in Biloela. They’re currently being held indefinitely on Christmas Island. She wrote about her experiences, but be warned, this is coming directly from a politician whose party was instrumental in the laws that have resulted in this family being detained. It’s easy to check her personal voting record. She’s previously dogwritten on how migrants will take our jobs.

Linda Reynolds's position as Defence Minister has been labelled ‘untenable' after the Western Australian MP extended her sick leave by nearly a month on Sunday.Ms Reynolds has been plagued by scandal in recent weeks, after former staffer Brittany Higgins alleged she was raped in the Minister's office in 2019.The Minister took sick leave for a pre-existing cardiac issue shortly after, on February 24, as pressure mounted over the way Ms Reynolds and other senior ministers had handled the issue, and questions arose as to who knew what, and when. .It has also been revealed Ms Reynolds called the victim a “lying cow” in front of another staffer when media reports began to surface about the alleged assault.Labor senator Kristina Keneally said she hopes Ms Reynolds is making a full recovery, but blasted the Morrison government over two senior cabinet ministers being absent.Attorney-General Christian Porter has been placed on mental health leave after self-identifying as the Minister being accused of a historical rape allegation.“Her position is untenable,” Ms Keneally said on Sunday in regards to the Defence Minister.“You cannot call the alleged victim of a rape in your own office a lying cow and think that has no consequences.”Ms Reynolds said in a statement issued on Sunday that she would not be returning to her office on Monday, as originally planned, and had been advised by her cardiologist to extend her leave until April 2.“Senator Reynolds has advised Prime Minister Scott Morrison of her doctor's assessment and will continue to consult with the Prime Minister as required,” the statement said.Foreign Minister Marise Payne will continue to act as defence Minister while Ms Reynolds is on leave.“Senator Reynolds is recuperating well and looks forward to resuming her duties as Defence Minister as soon as possible,” the statement said.Ms Reynolds has not publicly denied calling Ms Higgins a lying cow. Ms Higgins has also served a defamation lawsuit against the Defence Minister's office, demanding an apology, which the Minister has made.Ms Reynolds was expected to face questions in parliament and senate estimates in the next two weeks.“Is the Minister of defence, Linda Reynolds, trying to pretend she is (on one hand) well enough to continue as Defence Minister, but not well enough on the other to front up and answer to questions in parliament and the (Senate) estimates?” Ms Keneally said.Ms Keneally said she would welcome an independent investigation into the historical rape allegations made towards Mr Porter.“This is the Liberal government that appointed an independent investigator … to look into allegations (that were) 30 years old about Julia Gillard, her former boyfriend and a kitchen renovation,” she said.“If it is OK for the Liberal government to appoint an independent investigator to look into a kitchen renovation then surely it is OK for … the government to appoint an independent investigator to look into allegations of rape,” she said.

In the Season finale of The Glimmer Podcast, Dr Ashleigh Smith interviews Senator Kristina Keneally about her life after losing her daughter Caroline through stillbirth, political activism and spearheading the Stillbirth Inquiry. The 2018 Senate Inquiry into stillbirth has resulted in greater government funding toward research and bereavement support for affected families.  Senator Keneally explains how 20 years ago (when her daughter Caroline passed away) there was no internet, no support groups, no podcasts and the stillbirth foundation didn't exist. She remembers feeling isolated and unable to connect with others. She talks about arranging Caroline's funeral and leaning on her faith and the structure of the church. Kristina explains that she doesn't believe that God medals in our lives and earthly existence in specific ways, and while initially feeling angry with God she has been able to make peace with her religion and its role in her life. She has a background in feminist theology and feels that if God is a woman, she is also a woman who has lost her only child. Senator Keneally speaks about the intersection of faith and loss – the anger and the solace. Kristina says that her life trajectory was altered because of Caroline's stillbirth and that it has made her fearless. The two discuss the difference between fearlessness and apathy and ponder how those feelings evolve over time. Kristina believes that reproduction and the challenges that women face along the way are often misunderstood– she believes these challenges give strength to women that is underestimated. They discuss the Senate Inquiry and what it was like hearing from parents, researchers and clinicians. Senator Keneally recounts the range of emotions she felt from reading the personal accounts and impact statements that hundreds of families submitted. She describes initially feeling distraught but was later moved to anger.  She felt that the hearings became quite personal and emotional. Finally, the women discuss the future for stillbirth prevention. Senator Keneally explains that an airline tells all passengers what to do if the worst should happen – should we be educating all pregnant women about management of pregnancy loss?  Links: www.theglimmerproject.com https://www.stillbirthcre.org.au/assets/Uploads/Stillbirth-Action-and-Implementation-Plan-draft-25Feb20.pdfhttps://www.stillbirthcre.org.au/assets/Uploads/Informing-the-Stillbirth-National-Action-Plan-DRAFT.pdfhttps://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Parliamentarian?MPID=LNW

The Fiorella Files Episode 22 - Kipling, Keneally And Jonasson Schindler’s Ark – Thomas Keneally Revisit the book that spawned one of the most ground-breaking blockbusters of the nineties. One day, Thomas Keneally entered a luggage store, got chatting with the proprietor and came out with every writer’s dream – an amazing story about an enigmatic German businessman who saved the lives of hundreds of Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland. Kim – Rudyard Kipling Sail away to the India of the late nineteenth century with wily street kid Kim as your guide. The Mowgli of Lahore, Kim is the Little Friend to All the World, an Irish-Indian boy who finds himself both the disciple to a wise Lama and a recruit in the British secret service. The only disappointing thing about this book is that it has an ending. The 100-Year-Old Man who climbed out of the Window and Disappeared – Jonas Jonasson Pretty much as the title suggests, this hilarious farce involves a centenarian absconding from his birthday party and wandering across Sweden, desperate to embrace life once again. Compared by critics to the movie Forrest Gump, prepare yourself for a journey across the turbulent twentieth century, seen through the eyes of Alan, a man who left school at ten, turned out to be rather good at blowing things up and – somehow or other – managed to rub shoulders with the most powerful men in the world. In 1868, Charles Dickens dispatches his youngest child to Australia. Like his brother Alfred before him, sixteen-year-old Edward is expected to learn to apply himself in what his father considers to be the new land of opportunity. Posted to a remote sheep station in New South Wales, Edward discovers that Charles Dickens' fame has reached even there, as has the gossip about his father's scandalous liaison with an actress. Amid colonists, ex-convicts, local tribespeople and a handful of eligible young women, Edward strives to be his own man - and keep secret the fact that he's read none of his father's novels. Conjuring up a life of sheep-droving, horse-racing and cricket tournaments in a community riven with tensions and prejudice, the story of Edward's adventures also affords an intimate portrait of Dickens' himself. This vivacious novel is classic Keneally: historical figures and events re-imagined with verve, humour and compassion.

In 1705, the French Court in Versailles was full of plotting and scheming. This was also happening with a Duke's wife and his five mistresses, who were all trying to improve their own circumstances in 'The Orange Grove' by Kate Murdoch. When truth is stranger than fiction you have a novel in the making. Meg Keneally fictionalizes the real life story of convict Mary Bryant in 'Fled' which dramatises the transportation and escape of a forthright and independent women in those early years of Australian settlement.

Mike Keneally got his career off to an ambitious start when, after playing Top 40 covers he was thrust into “expert level”. Mike was selected to join Frank Zappa in 1987 on both guitar and keyboards. From there his unique, quirky style and impressive chops saw him contributing to a plethora of other musician’s work. Playing with everyone from Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa, to Steve Vai, to Joe Satriani he has proven his musicianship and indeed is currently working with legendary creators Devin Townsend and Todd Rundgren , respectively. But this doesn’t address his own body of work, which is impressive in its scope and variety. From “The Tar Tapes” volumes 1-5 in the eighties through gems like “hat” and “Scambot” Keneally demonstrates that his mind is always creating. He has always been a breath of fresh air by creating music that conforms only to what he finds interesting. In our in-depth conversation here Keneally and I discuss his early days, how he comes up with new material (as expected, it varies), and the projects he is currently working on! http://www.keneally.com/

Tim and Joha discuss a study which investigated the problem-solving skills of wolves and dogs and concluded that wolves are better at independent problem-solving. Does this mean wolves are "smarter" than dogs? Joha thinks it might, but Tim isn't so convinced. The discussion uses the study as a jumping off point for a broader discussion about domestication, intelligence and problem-solving and ultimately leads to some ruminations on the importance of having challenge and conflict in our lives. We find meaning and ultimately fulfillment by rising to challenges and triumphing over them. Are we too sheltered in the modern world? Is life too easy? The recording includes some cameos by Tim's (exceptionally intelligent and smarter than any damn wolf) Australian Shepherd, Keneally, who knew we were talking about her and wanted to get involved in the action. Notable by their absence were wolves, who aren't interested in human conversation one bit (maybe they ARE smarter than dogs after all). Enjoy!

Today's episode continues with the subject matter of alleged sexual misconduct on the part of famous and powerful figures, and how we react to these accounts. This time, Jaye focuses on the case of Roy Moore, the former state court judge running for the US Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions in the state of Alabama. Moore, a controversial politician strongly aligned with the Religious Right, has been accused of making sexual advances towards teenagers, including a 14 year old girl, in the late 1970s. Why are many of us inclined to take the word of the accused if we can relate to them, or if they are powerful figures we like? Is “winning” more important than standing by our word? Last year, after racing the AT&T Spartan Stadium race in San Francisco, I took my wife and twin boys to a private screening of (I'm not much of a Hollywood guy). Actually, this wasn't even a movie. It was a documentary, a genre that I really only tap into when my assistant sends me an audio download of some documentary somebody tells me I "must-see" and then I listen to it while I'm walking through the forest and imagine what is going on  from a visual standpoint (as a film nerd, my guest on today's podcast would probably throttle me for this). Anyways, I walked out of the screening incredibly impressed. I laughed, I was inspired, I was on the edge of my seat, my kids were howling with laughter, and my wife loved it. So what did we see exactly? The documentary is called "". It's all about the global obstacle course phenomenon, and in a highly entertaining and funny way, it explores the history of the sport, the psychology behind it, the personalities that drive it, and asks what it says about the world we're living in. Here's the trailer: Director Scott Keneally is my guest on today's show. This self-proclaimed “beta male” has been stuck in the mud since the fall of 2011, when he tackled his first Tough Mudder. Back then, the first-time filmmaker had no idea he’d be making a movie about any of this stuff. He went into it with a simple plan: to suffer and write a story about the suffering. Keneally had previously confessed to things like bedwetting and sweaty pits in places like the New York Times Styles section, and figured the one about training up and tackling a paramilitary assault course would make for funny material. That essay was featured on the cover of his local alt-weekly, but more importantly, while researching the history of the company, he stumbled upon a “Social Network”-style scandal surrounding its origins. He quickly reinvented himself as an investigative journalist, and his story ultimately landed on the cover of Outside. The exposé received widespread media attention, opening doors to a consulting gig with 60 Minutes Sports, a speaking engagement at Stanford Business School and—by kismet or luck—an unlikely new career path as a filmmaker. When he’s not running in mud, Keneally works as a treatment writer for some of the top directors in music videos and commercials. Over the past 15 years, he has collaborated on videos for Rihanna, Madonna, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, as well as Paris Hilton’s infamous burger commercial. He has also been known to play didgeridoo with the criminally under-discovered rock band OURS, through which he has toured with Marilyn Manson and recorded on the band’s Rick Rubin-produced record, “Mercy.” He received his B.A. from Boston College (’99) and his M.F.A. from University of San Francisco (’04). He lives on a vineyard in Sonoma County, CA, with his wife and little boy. During my discussion with Scott, you'll discover: -How raves, micro-dosing with LSD, and rebelling against being a preppie turned Scott from wanting to be the president of the United States to instead making music videos and eventually obstacle course racing...[13:45] -The crazy, eccentric man named "Mr. Mouse" who inspired Scott to make the Sufferfests movie... [19:45] -Scott's take on why millions of people are suddenly paying to suffer through ice, fire, electricity, barbed wire, mud and more...[28:20] -The concept of "The Strenuous Life" and why humans are hardwired to want to get out of our comfortable lives...[31:20] -Why a shocking number of people are doing obstacle course racing to get a good profile pic...[35:20] -The intriguing link between the "masculinity crisis" and obstacle course racing...[47:05] -Why you must have some aspect of fear and discomfort in your life...[52:00] -What were the craziest adventures you embarked upon while filming Sufferfest? [59:35] -What Scott thinks is the next "big thing" in OCR...[62:20] -And much more! In his recent book, The Conflagration of Community: Fiction Before and After Auschwitz (University of Chicago Press, 2011), J. Hillis Miller sets outs to address Theodor Adorno’s famous proclamation that to write poetry after Auschwitz is impossible and barbaric. One should make clear from the outset that Miller’s central project in this regard is not to make some grand claim about the value or worth of literature in the face of dehumanization and atrocity. The value of literature for him and for us is a given. There is nothing to argue. Rather, Miller is most concerned with addressing the question of whether or not literature can truly bear witness to the Shoah. While this question has indeed been a central concern of literary scholars, philosophers, and artists since Celan and Adorno, Miller’s method of approaching this topic by way of the theoretical concept of “community,” and more specifically, “literary communities,” is rather intriguing. Here, Miller invokes the work of Derrida and Jean-Luc Nancy in particular. As a way of illustrating his theoretical claims, Miller looks extensively at Kafka’s The Castle, The Man Who Disappeared, and The Trial In fact, Miller spends almost two-thirds of The Conflagration of Community examining these and several other Kafka works in order to reveal the extent to which literature can “imagine” the bureaucracies and social infrastructures of the Shoah. Miller’s love and deep admiration for Kafka shines through here and he does an amazing job of penetrating Kafka’s writing and making sense of it in light of his theoretical perspective. Beside the work of Kafka, Miller also looks extensively at novels that explicitly invoke the Shoah. Keneally’s Schindler’s List, McEwan’s Black Dogs, Spiegelman’s Maus make this list and Miller does each justice. In addition to the central issue of literature and the Shoah, there also exist several parallel concerns throughout The Conflagration of Community. Among these are American slavery and the serious injustices and human rights violations committed during the Bush administration. In a refreshing way, Miller’s work in The Conflagration of Community ends up being about much more than the Shoah and in successfully completing the Benjaminian constellation he tells us is his intention to construct in the preface, Miller creates something that is both profound and that persists beyond the page. For her latest trilogy Kate Grenville delves back into Australia's history and the first three generations of white settlement, to explore the complex relationship contemporary Australians have with the past. Deborah Cheetham is one of the country's "Stolen Generation", taken from her Aboriginal family when she was months old and fostered in a white community.
