Episode 315: “Everything I Ever Learned About TV Writing, I Learned From ‘The Facts Of Life' | Anupam Nigam”The Facts of Learning about Television Writing from The Facts of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: TV Writer Anupam Nigam Shares His Lessons from The Facts Of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: Top Lessons TV Writer Anupam Nigam Learned from The Facts Of Life For some people, a childhood spent lounging in front of the television leads to nothing but being sent to bed when Law and Order license plate comes on. But for Anupam Nigam, it led to a lifelong love of television – – and a successful career in TV writing and producing.  And his favorite show of all? The Facts of Life! The Facts of Life was a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes and aired on NBC from 1979-1988. The show starred Charlotte Rae as Eastland School for Girls housemother Edna Garrett watching over an evolving cast of young female stars including Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Nancy McKeon and a very young Molly Ringwald! It ran for more than 200 episodes, and spawned three TV movies. Anupam Nigam has written and produced episodes of hit TV shows like Psych, Defiance, Cruel Summer, Mech-X4 and Station 19. He is currently writer and co-executive producer of the hit CBS drama Fire Country. Susan and Sharon talk with Anupam about his childhood as an Indian American kid in New Jersey, his early love of television, the insight of The Facts of Life -- and the facts he learned that have stayed with him to this day. THE CONVERSATIONGROWING UP INDIAN -- IN NEW JERSEY: For Anupam, who was raised in an immigrant Indian household, television was a window into the wider world of “American” families - and how they were alike, and different from, his.“I'M NOT A DOCTOR, BUT I WRITE FOR THEM ON TV” -- Anupam was pre-med, a lab researcher, and even a certified EMT -- briefly -- before realizing that TV blood was more his style.Anupam's first script was a spec episode of Star Trek: Voyager -- and after that he was hooked.Anupam's “scientist mind” cracked the code on how to write a Law & Order script, and it led to a coveted spot in the Warner Bros Writers Program -- and then a big move to Hollywood! His first job was on The Division -- starring Facts of Life's Nancy McKeon!YOU TAKE THE GOOD, YOU TAKE THE VERY, VERY BAD: Anupam actually learned about the facts of life from the many “very special” episodes The Facts of Life: Abortion, divorce, drug abuse and death, anyone?Natalie was a natural STAR - When Charlotte Rae toured Westlake School for research, her young tour guide was… Mindy Cohn. Charlotte insisted the producers meet her and the role of Natalie was created for her! Those roller-skates? Tootie had to wear them to make her taller!CHEAPER BY THE… TEN? The original first season cast had TEN main characters - The seven girls, Mrs. Garett (Charlotte Rae), teacher Emily Mahoney (Jenny O'Hara) and Headmaster Stephen Bradley (played by John Lawlor). The OG Eastlake students: Blair Warner (Lisa Whelchel), Nancy Olsen (Felice Schachter), Sue Anne Weaver (Julie Piekarski), Tootie Ramsey (Kim Fields), Molly Parker (Molly Ringwald), Cindy Webster (Julie Anne Haddock) and Natalie Green (Mindy Cohn).…AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR. After season one, the young cast was cut from seven girls down to the “Core Four”: Lisa Whelchel as Blair, Kim Fields as Tootie, Mindy Cohn as Natalie and bringing on newcomer Nancy McKeon as Jo Polniaczek. So, join Susan and Sharon -- and Anupam! -- as they talk Shondaland, The Golden Girls, shoulder pads, tea-time, Jermaine Jackson, Mech x4, Geri Jewel, Entertainment Weekly -- and “Who Shot J.R?”! AUDIO-OGRAPHY Follow Anupam Nigam: Instagram.com/anupamnigam1 and Twitter.com/anupamnigam Watch Season 4 of The Facts of Life for free at Roku.Watch Fire Country on CBS.  Check out CitizensforEthics.org Buy Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson at Bookshop.org PLUS -- “80's TV LADIES” MERCH is available at our SHOP!    CONNECTVisit 80sTVLadies.com for transcripts.Join the conversation at Facebook.com/80sTVLadies.Sign up for the 80s TV Ladies mailing list.In Honor of President Carter and to learn more about his presidency: Get Susan's new play about him and his Crisis of Confidence speech: Confidence (and the Speech) at Broadway Licensing. BREAKING NEWS! We're NOMINATED by The Podcast Academy Ambies for Best Indie Hosts!  Podcast Academy members, please VOTE for 80s TV Ladies at The Podcast Acadey voting.   Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we speak to Larry Strauss, son of actress Charlotte Rae. To say we were more than a little surprised at how many of you connected to this episode with all of you comments, likes and metrics, is an understatement. You really took a liking to this one and why not? Larry was incredibly open about how both his mother and Josh's mother both shared the stage in the Broadway musical Li'l Abner, about an indiscrete moment between Cloris Leachman and Martin Balsam,  how his mother turned a co-starring role on Diff'rent Strokes into a starring role on The Facts of Life and much more. We also spoke to Larry about his books, the more recent biography of his mother The Facts of My Life as well as Lightman a book of fiction about two characters awash in catastrophe and possible redemption in 1973 New York City. What's more we delved into his teaching students in the LAUSD system in Los Angeles and how rewarding it is for him in an often difficult environment. We also learn about Larry's father John Strauss who was a composer & editor whose credits run the gamut from The Phil Silvers Show, Amadeus, Take The Money and Run and so much more. This episode has a it all, some laughs, some heartache and some great storytelling. But it's the story about Larry's older brother Andrew that took place each Christmas season that still has us thinking about it today. Another child of a celebrity interviewed by the child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.

The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - WORKPLACE WELLBEING!   Increasingly, work is an integral part of living - not the work/life balance but the work/life blend. And we can often spend more time with colleagues than we do with our own families. So, in return, more people demand careers that makes them feel part of something bigger than a to-do-list.   So why, in 2019, did the UK's Health and Safety Executive report that stress, depression, and anxiety accounted for over half of all work-related ill health cases.   In this episode we're exploring how brave employers should be in putting wellbeing and welfare at the top of their priorities. Has it gone to far, with new generations unrealistic about what they are entitled to? Or are we still falling short, hoping that AI and automation will simply get rid of expensive and whingeing people for good?   Our guest is a coach, a strategist and a facilitator with a mission. How does Sheffield compare with Silicon Valley? What if we reimagined degrees for the 21st century? How do you feel about driving a computer with wheels?   In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to British Silicon Valley entrepreneur and technology executive DAVID RICHARDS MBE.   Known for: Chairman, President & CEO - WANDisco Trustee - The David & Jane Richards Family Foundation Founder - EyUp Co-Founder - LaptopsForKids Non-Executive Director - TechNation Former Vice President - Netmanage, Inc Former Chairman & CEO - Librados, Inc Former CEO - Insevo   The Big 5 Questions: How do you measure the impact of what you do? How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate?   Key quotes: “He's probably a genius. As a summer intern at IBM they filed three patents based on his work, as an intern. That doesn't happen every day.” “We have probably the only usable implementation of Paxos in the world.” "What we'd actually built a product using massive scale data and actually everybody said how come your revenues aren't through the roof? And it was because the data sets weren't there yet. Then along came 5G.” “I was at a conference where Jaguar LandRover said that their passion and focus was their products and customers, but their monetisation was data.” “The competition is going to be the power of your algorithms and the data sets that you have, which is why Tesla have been so successful. Our technology now is being used to move these colossal data sets, some as large as an exabyte, growing at fifty percent per year. So our technology turns out to be very important with the advent of 5G and we're sat in a very good place right now.” “The beautiful thing with our business is we're licensing intellectual property, we're not selling services or shipping goods. When it hits, scaling a business like ours isn't actually complicated. It's like that old Mousetrap game, you build it, and then you watch the ball go around. Structurally our operating margins, even on ten times current sales and revenue, the incremental cost increase would be small.” “Social impact is critical for this business. We will not do deals with social media companies and gambling companies because they can't be trusted.” “My personal viewpoint is that the regulation on the gambling industry in the UK is just an absolute travesty. Why do we let these guys get away with it? And now when they're using data science techniques they can figure out the level at which they can maximise their revenue from an individual. In the same way, the tricks that Facebook have played on us in the past are not good for society.” "We sourced 15,000 laptops in less than six months and that had a huge positive impact on the business because the local economy and people in our locale can trust us.” “We have to find a way as a nation to provide free, safe and secure Internet for those who need it the most. It's not just giving them free Internet, it's empowering the community. But the most critical thing then is that you measure the impact — independently — and publish the research. Then you can go to government and say ‘you should nationalise OpenReach because the socio-economic impact is going to be this.' You can solve digital poverty very quickly if you adopt this strategy.” “I'm just appalled at the UK's education system, I have to be honest. It was designed by Victorians and the class system was very important. I think it's indicative of a huge weakness in our economy and society.” “The dirty little secret we have in this country, is we can't hire fresh graduates and put them straight into our company. We have a shortage of hundreds of thousands of software engineers in the UK. But the good news is the solution is incredibly simple.” “Philosophy is a brilliant lead-up to computing. You can do philosophy and then go on to do something else. You can have a brilliant education but you need to do the bit at the end where you train someone with the skills for a job.” “Every one of our offices has on the wall the Einstein quote, ‘imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited whereas imagination embraces the entire world.'”   Useful links: David Richards MBE on LinkedIn Derwent Edge (via Wikipedia) WANdisco PLC WANdisco (via Wikipedia) Dr Yeturu Aahlad (profile via Crunchbase) Sun Microsystems (via Wikipedia) Paxos (via Wikipedia) Leslie Lamport (via Wikipedia) Tesla Geoffrey A. “Oh, you're like me aren't you?” We laugh at our fake sponsor ads. Don't feel guilty for watching “Beane's of Boston”. Charlotte Rae was a busy lady. Were BBC execuitives scared of Mr. Humphries' camp in 2016? Darren Litten of Benidorm wrote the script for the 2016 BBC reboot! The reboot moves the AYBS Universe 3 years into the future from 1985 (when the original series ended) to 1988. New actors playing the old characters (most well known in the UK). John Challis as Captain Peacock! (From “Benidorm” and “Only Fools and Horses”) Sherrie Hewson as Mrs. Slocombe (From “Benidorm” and “Loose Women”) Roy Barraclough as Mr. Grainger (From “Coronation Street”) Kayode Ewumi as the new Mr. Conway Jason Watkins as Mr. Humphries Justin Edwards as Mr. Rumbold Mr. Conway's “new” accent: MLE “Multi-cultural London English”. It's a new accent that's developed within the last few decades around London. To be fit or not to be fit? Mrs. Slocombe's personal stock of wipes. The Slocombe/Dame Everage grimace! Young Mr. Grace's framed portrait in Mr. Rumbold's office. Mimiced 1970s BBC camera angles. The X-rated method to stop a dog from choking. PSA's on American television in the ‘80s. Do you remember the Punky Brewster refrigerator episode? A black actor! Mr. Harmon's still using CRS: Cockney rhyming slang. Grainger has come out of retirement to escape his wife. Mathew Horne plays Young Young Young Mr. Grace. Essex is the New Jersey of the UK? “It's just a very low kitten heel, Captain Peacock…” The “f-word” in the UK doesn't mean what it means in the US. What did -you- think about the lobster chocking scene? Slocombe arrives back at work while covered in “sewage”. Breaking the 4th wall with the p-word joke. The 1957 time-warp bubble from the original series. The BBC also made other pilots in 2016 like “Young Hyacinth” (a prequel of “Keeping Up Appearances”). How would the LGBTQ community see a Mr. Humphries character on the airwaves today in a modern show? How was the retro nature of AYBS part of the show's appeal? What would AYBS be like if it was filmed in Los Angeles instead of London?? The Unanimous loved The Unanimous Episode! And we'd still love to hear from you if you didn't get on the podcast. Get well soon folks who have COVID. Blackface verses Drag: comparable or not? Are you a drag queen? We'd love to hear your thoughts about what drag means to you. There's only one recording of “Beane's of Boston” (and that's probably for the best…). Beanes of Boston was filmed between seasons 6 and 7 of the original AYBS in the UK. “Healthy” Kentucky Fried Chicken?! Beane's was broadcast once on May 5, 1979 during the old “Good Times” time slot on CBS. Theme songs: a pilot episode in music. Beane's of Boston is like an American Grace Brothers… kinda. Frank Beane (“Old Mr. Grace”) played by Tom Poston (who guest starred on every sitcom in the 70/80s). Mr. Brandon's brain is AYBS and nothing else. Old Mr. Beane is a dirty old man like Young Mr. Grace. Harrold Bennet's YMG was somehow sweet while being a dirty old man; Frank Beane not so much. We love bumbling Mr. Rumbold played by Nicholas Smith. How did “pilot season” effect the actors in Beane's of Boston? “Miss. Brahams” feels like an airhead from “Three's Company”. Remaking films/TV shows is such a tricky thing since audiences will naturally compare the new product to the classic one. Why couldn't American audiences watch the original UK TV series? American censors couldn't handle sexual jokes or overtly gay characters? Check out Steven Capsuto's Youtube channel about LGBT TV history at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT-uzyA8-dkyNpMBKXb8mZw We meet Alan Sues who plays Mr. Humphries (Sues was gay but not out for his career). John Hillerman plays MISTER Peacock and carries it off very well. Charlotte Rae plays Mrs. Slocombe without her famous tinted hair. Was blue hair only a UK phenomenon? Slocombe does the “are you free?” line! Did American audiences know about AYBS? Repetition of classic AYBS jokes- “German Week” episode set up. “Well there goes my ride home” = a bold gay joke for American TV in 1979. The first black AYBS-related actor is Don Bexley who plays Mr. Johnson (like Mr. Harmond in maintenance). The German week jokes didn't get any laughs from the American audience. Mrs. Garrett from “The Facts of Life”! The Trans-Atlantic accent: the world's completely artificial accent in 1930s Hollywood films (think Catherine Hepburn). Drunk Mrs. Slocombe singing Marlene Dietrich! Comparing the German Dance Slap Fight with the original just isn't fair. The American experiment failed but it's a great way to compare and construct BoB with AYBS. Generation gaps made the original UK show so funny and relatable: by 1979 in the US, that just didn't work. His appointment to the local real estate firm rubs some people the wrong way. though. Charlie also has a secret, and one of the town hall secretaries aims to black mail him. Or does she? Either way, when she turns up shot, Charlie becomes the prime suspect and it's up to Jessica Fletcher to clear his name. Will she unwrap the Christmas Secret in time? Erik and Justin immediately get lost in the Mainer accents. Jason Scott Lee gets stuck in Justin's mind. The Batman returns, once again, as a villain. Bane also resurfaces as the people's champion. The George Clooney sitcom, E/R, once again factors into the proceedings. Erik totally gets mid-1970s Elliott Gould. He also tries to understand late 80s "Firm Culture." Stephen King ends up becoming important. The pair envision Brian De Palma's Batman. CW actors get credit for working impossible schedules. Erik confirms his allegiance to giallo lighting and Justin imagines Charlotte Rae in The Handmaid's Tale.

Considering that Larry Strauss' mother, Charlotte Rae, was arguably the quintessential TV educator, as Mrs Garrett on the hit series "The Facts Of Life," it should come as no surprise that he would follow a career in inner-city education and become an established author and journalist on the subject, becoming an award-winning 30 year veteran inner-city high school teacher who has worked with at-risk teenagers. The focus was largely on how this impulsively married couple had to adjust to their new lives and sudden parenthood, but it was the congenial Webster himself who drove much of the plot. Like NBC's earlier series Diff'rent Strokes, Webster featured a young African-American boy adopted by a wealthy white family. (Wikipedia). The series stars Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two African American boys from Harlem who are taken in by a rich white Park Avenue businessman and widower named Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato), for whom their deceased mother previously worked. During the first season and first half of the second season, Charlotte Rae also starred as the Drummonds' housekeeper, Mrs. Garrett (who ultimately spun off into her own successful show, The Facts of Life). The series made stars out of child actors Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato and became known for the "very special episodes" in which serious issues such as racism, illegal drug use, and child sexual abuse were dramatically explored.Home and Away - Sally and Pippa have a heart to heart about Dale after his deathhttps://youtu.be/iqpta4HuaqYTina Arena - Farewell to YTThttps://youtu.be/1gLM6XRFFGc#TinaArena #YoungTalentTimeThank For Listening xThanks for listening! www.the80smontage.com

It’s already time to say “adios” to a fabulous season of Drag Race, but not before putting the Top 3 through the usual finale paces. We have less to say about the reunion than we do about the final challenge this week, and even then it’s mostly thirsting over Carmelo Segura. Killer Queen kills the challenge, Hugaceo and Arantxa steal the runway and Carmen wins the competition before the lip sync is even over with a brilliant wig reveal that left us dripping. We also discuss the merits of Ricki and the Flash as a future Matreon, make a surprising discovery about A League of Their Own, and answer the question on everybody’s lips: is Charlotte Rae still alive?
