Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Utilitarianism and the replaceability of desires and attachments, published by MichaelStJules on July 28, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary 1. Consider a pill that would cause a happy person with a fulfilling life to abandon their most important desires and cherished attachments, including goals, career and loved ones, but increase their lifetime subjective well-being. If what's best for someone is just higher subjective well-being (including even higher lifetime preference/desire satisfaction), then it would be better for them to take the pill. However, it seems to me that if they prefer not to take such a pill, to honour their current specific desires and attachments, it could be worse for them to take it (more). 2. I anticipate some responses and reply to them: 1. People aren't always right about what's best for themselves. R: That's true, but attitude manipulation is quite different from other cases, where individuals neglect, discount or otherwise misweigh attitudes they do or will have (more). 2. Deontological constraints against involuntary manipulation. R: Deontological constraints could oddly recommend not to do what's better for someone on their behalf (more). 3. Indirect reasons count against involuntary attitude manipulation. R: Probably, but I also think it wouldn't be better for them in many cases where it would increase their well-being (more). 4. We can't compare someone's welfare between such different attitudes. R: We wouldn't then have reason either way about manipulation, or to prevent manipulation (more). 5. The thought experiment is too removed from reality. R: In fact, reprogramming artificial minds seems reasonably likely to be possible in the future, and regardless, if this manipulation would be worse for someone, views consistent with this could have important implications for cause prioritization (more). 3. This kind of attitude manipulation would be worse for someone on preference-affecting views, which are in favor of making preferences (or attitudes) satisfied, but neutral about making satisfied preferences (for their own sake). Such views are also person-affecting, and so neutral about making happy people or ensuring they come to exist (for their own sake). I expect such views to give relatively less priority to extinction risk reduction within the community (more). Acknowledgements Thanks to Lukas Gloor and Chi Nguyen for helpful feedback. Thanks to Teo Ajantaival, Magnus Vinding, Anthony DiGiovanni and Eleos Arete Citrini for helpful feedback on earlier related drafts. All errors are my own. Manipulating desires and abandoning attachments Let's start with a thought experiment. Arneson (2006, pdf) wrote the following, although I substitute my own text in italics and square brackets to modify it slightly: Suppose I am married to Sam, committed to particular family and friends, dedicated to philosophy and mountain biking, and I am then offered a pill that will immediately and costlessly change my tastes, so that my former desires disappear, and I desire only [to know more about the world, so I will obsessively and happily consume scientific material, abandoning my spouse, my friends and family, my career as a philosopher and mountain biking, and instead live modestly off of savings or work that allows me to spend most of me time reading]. I am assured that taking the pill will increase my lifetime level of [subjective well-being]. Assume further that Arneson loves Sam, his family and friends, philosophy and mountain biking, and would have continued to do so without the pill. He would have had a very satisfying, subjectively meaningful, personally fulfilling, pleasurable and happy life, with high levels of overall desire/preference satisfaction, even if he doesn't take the pill. On all of these measures of subjective well-bein...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How to do conceptual research: Case study interview with Caspar Oesterheld, published by Chi Nguyen on May 14, 2024 on LessWrong. Caspar Oesterheld came up with two of the most important concepts in my field of work: Evidential Cooperation in Large Worlds and Safe Pareto Improvements. He also came up with a potential implementation of evidential decision theory in boundedly rational agents called decision auctions, wrote a comprehensive review of anthropics and how it interacts with decision theory which most of my anthropics discussions built on, and independently decided to work on AI some time late 2009 or early 2010. Needless to say, I have a lot of respect for Caspar's work. I've often felt very confused about what to do in my attempts at conceptual research, so I decided to ask Caspar how he did his research. Below is my writeup from the resulting conversation. How Caspar came up with surrogate goals The process Caspar had spent six months FTE thinking about a specific bargaining problem between two factions with access to powerful AI, spread over two years. A lot of the time was spent on specific somewhat narrow research projects, e.g. modelling the impact of moral advocacy in China on which bargaining problems we'll realistically encounter in the future. At the time, he thought those particular projects were important although he maybe already had a hunch that he wouldn't think so anymore ten years down the line. At the same time, he also spent some time on most days thinking about bargaining problems on a relatively high level, either in discussions or on walks. This made up some double digit percentage of his time spent researching bargaining problems. Caspar came up with the idea of surrogate goals during a conversation with Tobias Baumann. Caspar describes the conversation leading up to the surrogate goal idea as "going down the usual loops of reasoning about bargaining" where you consider just building values into your AI that have properties that are strategically advantaged in bargaining but then worrying that this is just another form of aggressive bargaining. The key insight was to go "Wait, maybe there's a way to make it not so bad for the other side." Hence, counterpart-friendly utility function modifications were born which later on turned into surrogate goals. Once he had the core idea of surrogate goals, he spent some time trying to figure out what the general principle behind "this one weird trick" he found was. Thus, with Vincent Conitzer as his co-author, his SPI paper was created and he continues trying to answer this question now. Caspar's reflections on what was important during the process He thinks it was important to just have spent a ton of time, in his case six months FTE, on the research area. This helps with building useful heuristics. It's hard or impossible and probably fruitless to just think about a research area on an extremely high level. "You have to pass the time somehow." His particular projects, for example researching moral advocacy in China, served as a way of "passing the time" so to say. At the same time, he thinks it is both very motivationally hard and perhaps not very sensible to work on something that's in the roughly right research area where you really can't see a direct impact case. You can end up wasting a bunch of time grinding out technical questions that have nothing much to do with anything. Relatedly, he thinks it was really important that he continued doing some high-level thinking about bargaining alongside his more narrow projects. He describes a common dynamic in high-level thinking: Often you get stuck on something that's conceptually tricky and just go through the same reasoning loops over and over again, spread over days, weeks, months, or years. You usually start entering the loop because you think...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What's your standard for good work performance?, published by Chi Nguyen on September 29, 2023 on LessWrong. A lot of people in the community, including me, are working independently (or have a lot of autonomy, even if they are employed). A lot of people, including me, often feel like they are underperforming or at least wonder if they are. But how do I actually know when I'm not underperforming? I'd like to make some criteria for under which circumstances I'll consider my work satisfactory. I'd be curious to hear what other people would consider "decent" output. This is obviously hard to define but some types of data that seem helpful: How much do you get done in a typical month/half year? How much do consider aspirational but realistic to get done in a typical month/half year? How much do you consider on the low end but okay to get done in a typical month/half year? What kind of output would you want to see out of a researcher/community organiser/other independent worker within a month/half a year to be impressed/not be disappointed? (Assuming this is amount is representative of them) What's the minimum output would you want to see out of a researcher/community organiser/other independent worker to be in favour of them getting funding to continue their work? (Assuming this is amount is representative of them) What's the minimum output would you want to see out of your friend to feel good about them continuing their current work? (Assuming this is amount is representative of them) I literally mean silly things like "X number of substantive research documents of roughly this and that quality" - totally okay if very domain-specific. I know this probably hugely varies from person to person and is hard to answer in general - There's lots to take into account that seems hard to specify like quality of work and often we really care about outcomes instead of outputs. Feel free to rephrase the question in whichever way seems useful to you. (I know that there is no objective "enough" or that the real measuring stick are my values and reality. (I would have liked to include a link to a post that I'm sure exists but couldn't find it.) And there's a bunch of things that are individual to me and my line of work of course, so I don't expect people to say things that are directly useful and applicable to my situation. But I still think that sometimes a bit of data would be really useful to me and hopefully many others!) Thanks for listening. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Infrastructure Fund: September–December 2021 grant recommendations, published by Max Daniel on July 12, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction The EA Infrastructure Fund made the following grants between September and December 2021: Total grants: $2,445,941 Number of grants: 68 Acceptance rate: 78.5% This was somewhat, though not massively higher than usual. E.g., in both the previous and subsequent 4-month periods the acceptance rate was just under 71%. We suspect the unusually high acceptance rate during the period covered by this report was mostly due to an unusually large fraction of applications from EA university groups, which tend to have a higher acceptance rate than other applications we receive. Payout date: September–December 2021 Report authors: Max Daniel (chair), Michelle Hutchinson, Buck Shlegeris, Emma Williamson (assistant fund manager), Michael Aird (guest manager), Chi Nguyen (guest manager) In addition, we referred 5 grants totalling an additional $261,530 to private funders. See the "Referred Grants" section below. For capacity reasons, we only provide an abbreviated strategic update that doesn't include all relevant recent and upcoming developments at the EAIF and EA Funds more generally. A more comprehensive update will follow within the next few months. The EA Funds donation platform is moving to Giving What We Can. We are working on a new process for sharing information about the grants we are making that will reduce the delay between our grant decisions and their public reporting. Therefore, this is likely going to be the last EAIF payout report in the familiar format. We appointed Peter Wildeford as fund manager. Like other fund managers, Peter may evaluate any grant we receive, but we are especially excited about his expertise and interest in global health and wellbeing and animal welfare, which we think complements the more longtermism-focused profile of the other fund managers. Ashley Lin and Olivia Jimenez joined the EAIF as new guest managers. Chi Nguyen and Michael Aird left after their guest manager tenure, though Michael will still occasionally handle applications he is especially well placed to evaluate (for instance because he evaluated an application by the same applicant in the past). Olivia has since left as well to focus on other EA-related projects. We appointed Joan Gass and Catherine Low as fund advisers to increase coordination with the CEA Groups and Community Health teams, respectively. Joan Gass has since resigned from her role as adviser to focus on other EA-related projects, and we added Rob Gledhill and Jesse Rothman (both at CEA) as advisers instead. Would you like to get funded? Apply for funding. Highlights We continue to be very excited about the Global Challenges Project (GCP) led by Emma Abele, James Aung, and Henry Sleight. We supported GCP with $174,000 to cover the salaries of their core team as well as salaries and expenses for university groups managed by GCP. We first funded the GCP team in May 2021 and are impressed by their achievements to date, which include running an Oxford-based summer program for university group organizers, taking on EA Books Direct, and advice and other services for university groups. We were impressed with the track record, plans, and team of the Norwegian effective giving website Gi Effektivt, and supported them with a grant of $270,500 that exceeded their original ask. We funded Luca Parodi ($20,000), creator of the Instagram account School of Thinking, to produce additional Italian-language content on EA, longtermism, and rationality. We haven't reviewed the content Luca created since we made the grant, but we were excited to fund experiments with content creation on platforms with thus far little EA-related content. Grant Recipients In addition to the grants d...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Infrastructure Fund: May–August 2021 grant recommendations, published by Max Daniel on December 24, 2021 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction Between May and August 2021, the EA Infrastructure Fund has recommended the following grants. These include both grants from our Q2 grant cycle and from the rolling applications process we've adopted since. (Earlier grants are covered in the report on our Q1 grant cycle.) This post covers grant applications received before August 3rd (with the exception of one such grant that was decided later and will be included in the next report), and in three cases follow-up grants for grants that were awarded before the end of August. Total grants: $1,700,346 Number of grants: 42 Acceptance rate (excluding desk rejections and withdrawn applications): 71% (We think this acceptance rate seems high at first glance, but after a quick review we tentatively think our decisions were broadly correct. We also asked EA Funds ED Jonas Vollmer for a quick spot check, and he agreed that there were only very few grants that seemed perhaps below the bar to him. That being said, we might increase our funding threshold if we learn that few grants have been large successes, or if more funders are entering the space.) Decision period: May–August 2021 Report authors: Max Daniel (chair), Buck Shlegeris, Michelle Hutchinson, Chi Nguyen (guest manager), Michael Aird (guest manager) Note that we're providing less detailed payout reports than last round. This is because we're constrained by fund manager time, and so more detailed payout reports trade off directly with our grantmaking ability. We feel that it is valuable for donors and applicants to understand the fund managers' thinking, but that after the detailed payout reports from last round and our AMA earlier this year, there are diminishing returns from continuing to publish in-depth payout reports. (Note that us being constrained by fund manager time does not mean that ‘EA is primarily vetting constrained.' We think that receiving a larger number of applications proposing highly valuable projects could increase the overall impact of the EAIF's grants much more than fund managers spending more time on evaluating current applications. In fact, we suspect marginal fund manager time would be best spend on active grantmaking, i.e., soliciting more such applications. In this sense, the bigger constraint seems to be the supply of high-impact project ideas, project founders, and/or matching projects to founders.) Strategic updates include: Since May, the EAIF has taken on evaluating grants to local, national, and university groups outside of the select locations covered by CEA's Community Building Grants program. Buck Shlegeris led the assessment of such applications covered in this report. Since September, assistant fund manager Emma Williamson usually has taken the lead on evaluating such applications, with supervision from Buck and using a process that Buck and Emma developed. This refers to funding for group organizers. All groups remain eligible to apply to CEA's Groups Support Funding for operating costs such as room booking, advertising costs, and food at events, and to allow EA groups to run specific projects (such as retreats or fellowships). After having consulted with the other EA Funds, we are planning for the EAIF to evaluate all grants for local groups going forward, no matter the group's scope. For instance, the EAIF is going to evaluate applications for animal-focused groups, rationality groups, and groups focused on existential risk. We think that this is how we can best leverage the EAIF's experience in evaluating community building activities, since much of what we've learned will be useful irrespective of a group's focus. We will consult with managers of the other funds and cause a...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Launching Utilitarianism.net: An Introductory Online Textbook on Utilitarianism, published by Darius_M on the AI Alignment Forum. We are excited to announce the launch of Utilitarianism.net, an introductory online textbook on utilitarianism, co-created by William MacAskill, James Aung and me over the past year. The website aims to provide a concise, accessible and engaging introduction to modern utilitarianism, functioning as an online textbook targeted at the undergraduate level . We hope that over time this will become the main educational resource for students and anyone else who wants to learn about utilitarianism online. The content of the website aims to be understandable to a broad audience, avoiding philosophical jargon where possible and providing definitions where necessary. Please note that the website is still in beta. We plan to produce an improved and more comprehensive version of this website by September 2020. We would love to hear your feedback and suggestions on what we could change about the website or add to it. The website currently has articles on the following topics and we aim to add further content in the future: Introduction to Utilitarianism Principles and Types of Utilitarianism Utilitarianism and Practical Ethics Objections to Utilitarianism and Responses Acting on Utilitarianism Utilitarian Thinkers Resources and Further Reading We are particularly grateful for the help of the following people with reviewing, writing, editing or otherwise supporting the creation of Utilitarianism.net: Lucy Hampton, Stefan Schubert, Pablo Stafforini, Laura Pomarius, John Halstead, Tom Adamczewski, Jonas Vollmer, Aron Vallinder, Ben Pace, Alex Holness-Tofts, Huw Thomas, Aidan Goth, Chi Nguyen, Eli Nathan, Nadia Mir-Montazeri and Ivy Mazzola. The following is a partial reproduction of the Introduction to Utilitarianism article from Utilitarianism.net. Please note that it does not include the footnotes, further resources, and the sections on Arguments in Favor of Utilitarianism and Objections to Utilitarianism. If you are interested in the full version of the article, please read it on the website. Introduction to Utilitarianism "The utilitarian doctrine is, that happiness is desirable, and the only thing desirable, as an end; all other things being only desirable as means to that end." - John Stuart Mill Utilitarianism was developed to answer the question of which actions are right and wrong, and why. Its core idea is that we ought to act to improve the wellbeing of everyone by as much as possible. Compared to other ethical theories, it is unusually demanding and may require us to make substantial changes to how we lead our lives. Perhaps more so than any other ethical theory, it has caused a fierce philosophical debate between its proponents and critics. Why Do We Need Moral Theories? When we make moral judgments in everyday life, we often rely on our intuition. If you ask yourself whether or not it is wrong to eat meat, or to lie to a friend, or to buy sweatshop goods, you probably have a strong gut moral view on the topic. But there are problems with relying merely on our moral intuition. Historically, people held beliefs we now consider morally horrific. In Western societies, it was once firmly believed to be intuitively obvious that people of color and women have fewer rights than white men; that homosexuality is wrong; and that it was permissible to own slaves. We now see these moral intuitions as badly misguided. This historical track record gives us reason to be concerned that we, in the modern era, may also be unknowingly guilty of serious, large-scale wrongdoing. It would be a very lucky coincidence if the present generation were the first generation whose intuitions were perfectly morally correct. Also, people have conflicting moral intuitions ab...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Framework for Assessing the Potential of EA Development in Emerging Locations, published by jahying on the AI Alignment Forum. Write a Review I would like to thank Max Daniel, Jan Kulveit, Alex Barry, Ozzie Gooen, David Nash, Rose Hadshar, Harri Besceli, Emiel Riiko, Florent Berthet, Jaime Sevilla, Chi Nguyen and Aaron Gertler for reviewing this post. Special thanks to Vaidehi Agarwalla for her immense help with copyediting and research assistance. Also thank you to Wanyi Zeng who inspired my research project and has offered generous support since its inception. This framework evolved out of research conducted as part of the 2019 CEA Summer Research Fellowship. My research project looks at how EA should be developed and approached in Asia. My research mentors were Rose Hadshar and Jan Kulveit. Please note that this post is not endorsed by the FHI, CEA, Open Phil, or other individuals and organizations interviewed as part of the research project. If you would like to support my work, I am currently looking for funding, advisors and collaborators. You can reach me at jahying.chung@gmail.com. If you are short on time, the Summary, Background and Summary Table sections should provide a sufficient overview of the framework. Summary Effective Altruism is growing globally. In Asia, for instance, the number of groups has doubled in the last 2 years [1]. Both group organizers and core EA decision-makers have voiced different views and concerns on how (or whether) this growth should happen. In order to avoid overlooking major risks and opportunities, improve communication, and prevent frustration across parties, how might we get everyone on the same page and have productive conversations about developing EA in an emerging location? This framework attempts to answer that question. It aims to provide a common basis on which different stakeholders can evaluate the potential of EA development in emerging locations. It arose out of expert interviews with core EAs who are actively thinking about community and movement building strategy, including staff at CEA and Open Phil, community managers within other EA organizations, and leading group organizers around the world. This post will first outline the reasons to work on this topic, the value of the framework, and its current status and limitations. Then it will present the framework in the form of a summary table before going in depth into each dimension. Finally, I outline my next steps in applying this framework to Asian locations. In short, the framework applies two types of analyses: group analysis and geographic analysis, and considers two perspectives: cause-generic and cause-specific. In the group analysis, the framework breaks down the question of “how promising is this group?” into three aspects: Group traction: what has the group accomplished so far? Capabilities: what resources do they have? Connections: how do they collaborate/coordinate with other EAs? How are resources transferred? Who do they most frequently interact with, and in what capacity? In the geographic analysis, the framework breaks down the question “how exciting would EA be in this location?” into three aspects: Existing Alignment: how much alignment already exists with EA ideas? Talent: what types of talent exist here, in quantity and quality? Business and Politics: how does power work here? What influential institutions exist here? The analysis can be done from a cause-generic perspective and cause-specific [2] perspective. The full framework has not yet been applied to specific locations and I expect to make adjustments based on feedback from group organizers and core EAs as it is applied and evaluated. Background Terminology Throughout this post I will use the following terms which need some justification or clarification: EA development: instead of ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My Understanding of Paul Christiano's Iterated Amplification AI Safety Research Agenda, publishedby Chi Nguyen on the AI Alignment Forum. Write a Review Crossposted from the EA forum You can read this post as a google docs instead (IMO much better to read). This document aims to clarify the AI safety research agenda by Paul Christiano (IDA) and the arguments around how promising it is. Target audience: All levels of technical expertise. The less knowledge about IDA someone has, the more I expect them to benefit from the writeup. Writing policy: I aim to be as clear and concrete as possible and wrong rather than vague to identify disagreements and where I am mistaken. Things will err on the side of being too confidently expressed. Almost all footnotes are content and not references. Epistemic Status: The document is my best guess on IDA and might be wrong in important ways. I have not verified all of the content with somebody working on IDA. I spent ~4 weeks on this and have no prior background in ML, CS or AI safety. I wrote this document last summer (2019) as part of my summer research fellowship at FHI. I was planning to restructure, complete and correct it since but haven't gotten to it for a year, so decided to just publish it as it is. The document has not been updated, i.e. nothing that has been released since September 2019 is incorporated into this document. Paul Christiano generously reviewed the first third to a half of this summary. I added his comments verbatim in the document. Apologies for the loss of readability due to this. This doesn't imply he endorses any part of this document, especially the second half which he didn't get to review. Purpose of this document: Clarifying IDA IDA is Paul Christiano's AI safety research agenda.[1] Christiano works at OpenAI which is one of the main actors in AI safety and IDA is by many considered the most complete[2] AI safety agenda. However, people who are not directly working on IDA are often confused about how exactly to understand the agenda. Clarifying IDA would make it more accessible for technical people to work on and easier to assess for nontechnical people who want to think about its implications. I believe that there are currently no resources on IDA that are both easy to understand and give a complete picture. Specifically, the current main resources are: the “Iterated Amplification” sequence which is a series of curated posts by Paul Christiano that can be quite difficult to understand, this post by Ajeya Cotra and this video by Robert Miles which are both easy to understand but limited in scope and don't provide many details, Alex Zhu's FAQ to IDA which clarifies important points but does not set them in context with the entire research agenda, an 80,000 podcast with Paul Christiano which explains some intuitions behind IDA but is not comprehensive and is in speech form. This document aims to fill the gap and give a comprehensive and accessible overview of IDA. Summary: IDA in 7 sentences IDA stands for Iterated Amplification and is a research agenda by Paul Christiano from OpenAI. IDA addresses the artificial intelligence (AI) safety problem, specifically the danger of creating a very powerful AI which leads to catastrophic outcomes. IDA tries to prevent catastrophic outcomes by searching for a competitive AI that never intentionally optimises for something harmful to us and that we can still correct once it's running. IDA doesn't propose a specific implementation, but presents a rough AI design and a collection of thoughts on whether this design has the potential to create safe and powerful AI and how the details of that design could look like. The proposed AI design is to use a safe but slow way of scaling up an AI's capabilities, distill this into a faster but slightly weaker AI, which can be scal...
