This week's podcast is a survival guide for club, college, and elite gymnasts to tackle meet season.   In compulsory and younger years you train a little less intensively and meets aren't as frequent but as you get into optional levels 7-10, elite, and then college the season becomes much more of a grind.   It can be hard to get through a competitive season when you have school, other life commitments, training sessions, traveling to meets plus managing your time with friends, family, and hobbies.    I've been there and remember trying to make lineups, do schoolwork, and trying to have a social life was absolutely exhausting.   But I have learned so much since then from studying research, hearing and talking to different experts as well as consulting with various club, elite, and college programs to really understand what the common problems are.    So I have comprised all this knowledge and research into 5 easy ways to not only optimize your training and performance but also minimize the risk of injury.   I discuss:    The importance of sleep for performance.   What are circadian rhythms?   The importance of seeing the sun first thing in the morning.   Stress management.   How to schedule time to relax and recharge.   What fuels your work and recovery?    And…   Soft tissue care and flexibility maintenance.   If you want to learn more and get further information on the topics covered in the podcast check out these:     Master Your Sleep & Be More Alert When Awake | Huberman Lab Podcast #2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm1TxQj9IsQ   Sleep Toolkit: Tools for Optimizing Sleep & Sleep-Wake Timing | Huberman Lab Podcast #84 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2aWYjSA1Jc   The Food and Body Image Talk Gymnasts and Coaches Must Hear with Christina Anderson, RDN - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ9ZZ4qDDWI   What Gymnasts Need for Nutrition with Dr. Josh Eldridge - https://youtu.be/DYwbU3wcZ04

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Masters of Horror and Suspense Peter Straub (1993-2022), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded april 4, 1993 while on tour for his novel, “The Throat,” third in a thematic trilogy that included “Koko” and “Mystery.” Peter Straub, who died on September 4th, 2022 at the age of 79, was a master of horror and supernatural fiction whose work erased any distinction between genre and the literary world. Among his best known novels were Ghost Story, Shadowland, Floating Dragon, The Hellfire Club, and his collaboration with Stephen King, The Talisman.   He was also a poet and short fiction author. Three years after the interview, Peter Straub's novel The Hellfire Club was published to great acclaim, followed in 2001, with Black House, a sequel to The Talisman, written with Stephen King, and four later novels, the last one, A Dark Matter, published in 2010. A third book in The Talisman series was announced, but never written. A television series based on The Talisman for Netflix and created by The Duffer Brothers of Stranger Things fame, was announced in 2021 and is apparently still on track. Complete 39-minute interview. Digitized, remastered and edited by Richard Wolinsky in September, 2022. This interview has not seen the light of day in nearly thirty years.   Stephen King, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Lawrence Davidson, while on tour for The Dead Zone, recorded September 8, 1979 at Dark Carnival Bookstore in Berkeley. At the time of this recording, Stephen King had only written a handful of books — Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining and the Stand preceding The Dead Zone. There were also two novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, which was still a secret at the time. Since then, Stephen King has become a literary institution with over 300 credits for television and film adaptations at IMDb. He also has 64 novels, 11 collections of stories, and 5 non-fiction books. This interview was transcribed and can be found in both Feast of Fear: Conversations with Stephen King, edited by Tim Underwood and Chuck Miller, and Stephen King and Clive Barker: Macabre II, edited by James Van Hise. Cynthia Santos DeCure and Micha Espinosa both grew up speaking English and Spanish, and they share memories of being made to feel like their voices, dialects, and identities weren't “good enough” for Shakespeare. Now, both DeCure and Espinosa are vocal coaches and actors. They share an example of how an actor might embody their text, praise on the late great Raul Julia, and explain how important it is for actors to bring their 'voces culturales' to Shakespeare's words. Cynthia Santos DeCure is an Assistant Professor of Acting at the Yale School of Drama. She was most recently the dialect coach for El Huracán at Yale Rep, and she was the on-set dialect coach for Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Micha Espinosa is a Professor in the School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at Arizona State University. Most recently, she was the Voice and Text Director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's world premiere production of La Comedia of Errors, a bilingual adaptation of Shakespeare's original play from the Play on! translation by Christina Anderson. DeCure and Espinosa wrote about vocal coaching in chapters in Shakespeare and Latinidad, a collection of essays in the field of Latinx theater, edited by Carla Della Gatta and Trevor Boffone and published by Edinburgh University Press in June 2021. The A$AP Rocky trial is underway in Sweden and the rapper testified about an altercation he had with two men in Stockholm.  A$AP claims that he feared for his safety when two young men were following him and fought with his bodyguard.  One of the issues is whether a bottle was used to beat up one of the men.  Christina Anderson is in Sweden covering the trial, she joins us for what happened and this added twist… President Trump has sent a special envoy to sit in at the trial. Next, a new congressional report is shedding more light on all the awful crimes that were committed by Olympic gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar.  The new report says that the FBI, USA Gymnastics, and more, all knew about the allegations of Nassar's abuse of athletes, but hid the extent of his crimes from the public and the athletic community.  Brianna Sacks, BuzzFeed News reporter, joins us for more. Finally, at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a baby southern white rhino was just born and the program that helped bring him into the world could help save the nearly extinct northern white rhino.  Scientists want to use frozen eggs and sperm from a dead northern white rhino and implant it into a surrogate mother to hopefully repopulate them.  Brad Fikes, reporter at the San Diego Union Tribune, joins us for this ambitious project to save the northern white rhino.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

At the center of the program was the idea that narrative is art and art is narrative. Senferu's artwork is also a cross section of her teaching. Zena Carlota Pearl Allen is a self-trained artist who uses the mediums of collage, painting, sculpture, and installation. In her art, which is currently a part of a number of exhibitions: Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland and One Life Institute at Studio One in Oakland, she explores universal themes of matriarchy, cultural knowledge and preservation that are cross-cultural in their significance.
