After nearly four years apart, award-winning commercial agent Michael Burgio has returned to Novak Real Estate, reuniting with longtime colleague Mark Novak. Their chemistry is immediately evident as they explore what's changed—and what hasn't—since Michael's departure.Caught between curiosity and caution, many professionals wonder if they should explore opportunities beyond their current workplace. Michael's journey offers rare insight into both sides of this career dilemma. Having won Commercial Agent of the Year during his original decade-long tenure at Novak, Michael candidly shares how his time away revealed what he calls "the Novak difference"—the infrastructure, systems, and team environment that exponentially enhances an agent's capabilities. The conversation delves into the psychology of career decisions, with Michael likening his experience to testing whether "the grass is greener" elsewhere. Unlike failed relationships where returning isn't an option, Michael found a welcoming door back to Novak after gaining perspective from his time away. This reunion required both parties to set aside ego, acknowledging that sometimes we need distance to truly appreciate what we had.Client response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing delight at no longer having to choose between working with Michael or with Novak. For agents considering similar career moves or managers wondering how to handle returning talent, this candid discussion offers valuable insights into navigating professional journeys with authenticity and growth mindset. Have you ever left something behind only to discover its true value in your absence?

The Actor's Career Compass
How Many Agents Can I Have?

The Actor's Career Compass

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2024 6:28

In this episode of The Actor's Career Compass, host Martin Bentsen explores the intriguing question of how many agents an actor can have. He clarifies that, in essence, actors can have as many agents as they wish, provided there's no conflict between them. Typically, actors might have different agents for commercial and theatrical roles, or different agents for different geographic locations, like New York and Los Angeles. The crux of understanding what's permissible lies in the details of an actor's existing contracts, particularly within the exclusivity clauses which delineate the agent's jurisdiction and the scope of their representation.Martin shares two contrasting examples of exclusivity agreements to illustrate the range from flexible to strict arrangements. The first example permits actors to seek representation and work outside the realm of commercial work in the Greater Los Angeles Area, thereby offering considerable freedom. The second example is far more restrictive, granting the agent exclusive rights to represent the talent across all employment types within the entertainment industry, both domestically and internationally. This strict arrangement underscores the importance of mutual compatibility and the actor's trust in the agent's capacity to effectively manage their career.Lastly, Martin emphasizes the importance of coordination and communication between an actor's multiple agents or managers to prevent overlapping submissions for roles and advises actors to consider the quality of representation over quantity. He warns of the complexities and potential financial obligations involved in managing relationships with multiple agents, especially when it comes to commission fees, and suggests a thoughtful, strategic approach to selecting representation. For further guidance and resources on managing your acting career, reach out to Martin at martin@cityheadshots.com and visit https://www.martinbentsen.com. As a partner and commercial agent at WPA- Worldwide Production Agency- Trevor Kossack represents directors, cinematographers, production designers, editors and costume designers. Trevor has a passion for those responsible for crafting the images that make movies, television shows and commercials. Trevor first studied medicine in college, but soon realized that he didn't want to be a doctor. He also had family in the entertainment industry and got an entry level job at the William Morris Agency. He found he really enjoyed working in a talent agency. As he switched agencies and worked his way up, Trevor decided he wanted to represent those below the line more than actors or writers. He appreciates what cinematographers, production designers, costume designers and editors need to do to create art, and everyone needs representation to protect their bests interests when they're up for a job. When looking for new talent, Trevor wants to fall in love with the person's work and how it makes him feel. He likes to see real, human stories that draw people in, no matter what the subject. He networks with potential clients at film festivals and industry events, and keeps his finger on the pulse of industry news to find out the latest projects and people on the rise. Trevor enjoys having a good relationship with his clients, and is always looking to create a great “marriage” between a director and a DP. As an agent, Trevor's job is to have conversations with his clients about what's available, what their brand is and how it can be adjusted, and matching the person to the right job. He always respects an artist's choice on the jobs they decide to take, or pass over. Trevor's tips on how to find an agent: Have a reel of your work and feel confident in the work you've done so far, no matter how much experience you have. Make a plan and discuss what your plans are for your career in the next year, and then the next 5 years. Figure out who your influences are, including any and all art, from fine art and photography to architecture or anything else. Remember that getting an agent is just a step along the way. Everyone in the entertainment industry still needs to network and hustle to find their next projects. He's always open to emails, phone calls or taking a look at a potential client's reel. Even if you don't get representation right away, it's always good to stay in touch. In each episode, we feature different guests to tap into their wealth of CRE expertise and explore the latest trends and updates from the world of commercial real estate. In this episode, Crexi's Yannis Papadakis sits with Branson and Matt to discuss the rise of Dollar General and other net lease successes. The conversation ranges from the first appearance of discount stores, their resilience amid turbulent economic times, and how the Trinity REIS team has transacted more than 120 Dollar General assets in 2020. Some key takeaways include:Net lease assets have been steadily growing in popularity as investors largely move from assets that require management and attention to more hands-off options.COVID-19 has made commercial buyers more conscious: Dollar General is an attractive investment option because it weathered the storm in the early days of the pandemic.Dollar General leases have evolved over the last decade. They began as double net leases, where landlords were responsible for maintenance and lease terms were shorter. Today, Dollar Generals are opting for longer term, triple net leases. Longer-term leases are far more attractive to investors, particularly amid the pandemic.Dollar Generals in urban markets typically sell at lower cap rates, thanks to the promise of consumer demand. In more rural areas, too, cap rates are steadily compressing as more and more investors are attracted to Dollar General's lease structures.**A note: this conversation originally aired as an episode of Crexi's PRO Perspective webinars. In this episode of The Power Producers Podcast, David Carothers and co-host Kyle Houck talk about how to use mods, audits, certificates of insurance, and other simple tactics to create doubt, drive wedges, and close deals.   Episode Highlights:   David shares why he wants to talk about doubt. (1:53) David says that he’s good at creating doubt by asking a question and presenting scenarios to people. (2:26) Kyle feels that the stuff they have in their solicitation calendar is based on driving a wedge and creating doubt. (3:31) David shares the perfect time to validate our mod if it’s getting higher than the average. (5:12) What type of updates does Kyle have for his last runs about the current situation? (5:42) Kyle says they noticed that people don’t know what their dividend looks like for the policy. (07:51) David thinks that the most effective way to get somebody from zero to 60 is their audits or the amount of time that it takes to get certificates. (11:21) David thinks that the reason why agents fail is that no one educates them about the audit. (12:10) David says if you want a good strategy for driving a wedge around certificates of insurance, look at what the certificate is requesting and what the certificate request looks like. (14:34) David shares the two questions he always asks about surrounding property. (16:48) David says that if we just sit back, make things as fundamental as possible, and execute 100% on it, we’re going to write more business. (20:11) Kyle explains why he’s looking for low dollar indemnity claims. (22:44) David explains why we need to make sure that agents understand or validate every single step of the process. (29:00) A lot of David’s friends that own agencies are talking about how they’re getting hammered because of COVID. (31:03) Tweetable Quotes:   “If you guys take the information that we have given you in this podcast, and you just dissect it, study it, and execute on it. You're gonna kill it absolutely.” - David Carothers “When we're meeting with somebody, or even if you're just on a first appointment with a gatekeeper we want to create enough doubt or buzz, to get past the objection and get these people to start thinking the way you want them to think.”  - David Carothers “All this all of this stuff is super simple that anybody can do, you don't have to be an expert to make this happen. It's simple sales 101.” - Kyle Houck Resources Mentioned :   The Power Producer’s Podcast David Carothers LinkedIn Kyle Houck LinkedIn Killing Commercial Insurance Florida Risk Partners

Thank you!   Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation:  “A commercial agent is always trying to piece together someone else’s vision board.” “This industry grows a youth actor to be ready for many, many aspects and challenges of life.” “Even when you start kids really young, it’s still a great experience.” “Acting is behavioral training, it’s a cognitive training, it’s a self-esteem builder.” “A commercial audition is the biggest room of play. You get to be yourself in front of other people.” “Auditions are our Olympics.” “My age categories, and what I’m looking for, changes daily.” “There’s never a bad time for me to look for potential new clients. Commercials are year-round.” “Commercial is the stepping-stone into the Theatrical world.” “Be open to the commercials, because that can begin everything for an actor’s career.” “Being an actor is a job. It takes a certain discipline. It’s not for everyone, and that’s OK.”   On the COVID-19 shutdown: “Keep up with your special skills. You should still be practicing every skill in your arsenal.” “Staying creative is what’s important. It doesn’t have to be memorizing a Shakespearean monologue every day.” “If you want to write and create your own story, now is the time!” “Show off your dance moves, recite your poems, and tell your stories.” “Get really, really good at self-taping. If this is the new normal, then a lot of the auditions will be remote.”    Follow Haydn Jones HERE:  Instagram:     @TRIFIREFLY25

When I was seeking an agent and auditioned with People Store, I walked in somewhat blind. If they said yes, what was my role in the process? Was I supposed to simply sit back and wait for auditions? If not, then what else was I supposed to do? How many auditions was I to expect? What if I didn’t get any? If I didn’t book anything would they drop me? Assuming that many new actors feel this way, I thought the best people to ask would be my agents. Today’s conversation is with Lina Ramirez-Mills, Head of the Commercial Department, and Laura Crawford, Commercial Agent, at People Store. Both Lina and Laura started working at People Store in 2018. They are both passionate about their role as agents and they love being advocates for actors. What do they say actors need to do to be successful? Be prompt, reliable, and humble. But the most important thing they look for before signing anyone is training. When actors get discouraged, Lina reminds us, “we are always in your corner... fighting for you.” Laura adds, “Please don’t give up. If you are meant to do this, you are meant to do this…take a deep and just keep moving forward.” Find out more about People Store and their agents: https://peoplestore.net/ Follow People Store: IG @peoplestoreagency and on Twitter @People_Store If you want to chat or ask questions about the episode go to FB: https://www.facebook.com/tarmeydanielle/ and visit the group site.
