Leaders and decision makers in government, industry and education have convened at Hillsborough Castle for a landmark gathering set to shape Northern Ireland's strategic approach to artificial intelligence implementation, adoption, and governance for the next decade. Hosted by the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC), the inaugural AI Castle Conversation was addressed by Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service Jayne Brady MBE, Chief Scientific and Technology Adviser Professor Helen McCarthy, Department for the Economy Permanent Secretary Ian Snowden and Ulster University Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Bartholomew. In a defining moment for AI policy and adoption in Northern Ireland, the deep dialogue event serves as a critical precursor to the formation of a new AI Taskforce under The Executive Office and forthcoming Office of AI and Digital, announced in the recent Northern Ireland Programme for Government. David Crozier CBE, AICC Director, said: "The conversations held this week will directly inform strategic priorities and policy developments, not least the creation of a comprehensive AI Action Plan for Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister has recently outlined his national vision for AI implementation, stating that no person should spend time on a task where digital or AI can do it better, quicker, and to the same high quality and standard. While work is required to address the complex implications of the technology, our ambition for Northern Ireland aligns directly. "This region is uniquely positioned, with our strong academic institutions, growing technology sector and cross-border collaboration opportunities to harness the transformative potential of AI. The CEO of the Arab Irish Chamber of Commerce (AICC) is urging Irish businesses battling the uncertainty of "what's next" during the Trump administration to consider expanding their trade strategy to the Arab world - or risk being left behind. AICC CEO Ahmad Younis urged Irish businesses to look to the East on the back of US President Donald Trump's announcement to tax imports of steel and aluminium by 25 percent. Mr. Younis said the US policy overhaul could well be the start of a range of tariffs on EU imports, advising businesses to give serious consideration to reassessing their trade strategy. Mr Younis said: "The Arab world already imports more than 85 per cent of its food supply, much of it from Ireland. Its reliance on imports is enormous, and the opportunities for Irish companies to forge new business alliances in countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Morocco are significant. "Ireland relies heavily on US corporations in the tech and pharmaceutical sectors, yet diversification has been slow," he added. "To safeguard our economic future, we should expand our trade horizons beyond the USA and capitalise on emerging markets with high growth potential." Island of Innovation In 2023, the US imported $54 billion worth of Irish goods, accounting for 28 per cent of all Irish exports. Of that, $36 billion was in pharmaceuticals and chemicals, underscoring Ireland's expertise but also our economic vulnerability. Mr Younis believes Ireland should now capitalise on opportunities in the Arab world, a market of 22 countries and 470 million people: "We're the island of innovation for good reason - and our expertise and commitment to quality in the medical production field is just one example," he said. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) pharma market, valued at $24 billion in 2023, is projected to grow to $32 billion by 2027, fuelled by rising populations, technological advancements, and increased healthcare investments. Success Stories Irish agri-food businesses are also benefitting from growing ties with the Arab region and are making their mark, says Mr Younis, citing Keogh's Crisps and Monaghan's Silverhill Duck as major success stories. "It's so common now to see Irish products like butter, chocolates and meats on the shelves of Dubai supermarkets," said Mr Younis. "We have a very strong presence in multiple markets across the Middle East and Gulf -- but there's just so much potential for further growth." Despite the geopolitical unrest, Irish exports to the Arab region grew six per cent in the first quarter of 2024 to €731 million and totalled €2 billion in the first nine months. Highlights from January to September 2024 included: United Arab Emirates (UAE): Exports grew by 7 per cent year-on-year to €532.9 million, driven by demand for transport equipment, power-generating machinery, and medical and pharmaceutical goods. Morocco: Trade surged by 38 per cent to €138.7 million, with a strong performance in power-generating machinery, chemical materials, and dairy and bird eggs. Egypt: Exports from January to September were valued at €163M to this region. The main goods exported were pulp & wastepaper, dairy products & bird eggs, as well as fruits and vegetables. "This success isn't a one-off," said Younis. "The resilience of key markets like the UAE and Morocco demonstrates the opportunities available for Irish businesses that are willing to adapt and engage with the region." The AICC has been supporting Irish trade with the east for more than 35 years - and as an Arab living in Ireland for almost 40 years, Mr. Younis says there are more similarities than differences. "I have seen how well-received and respected Irish businesses are in the Middle East and Gulf, and I can see many similarities between the two cultures, which certainly helps when it comes to doing business," Mr Younis concluded.

From investing in technology to building personalized customer relationships, Mark offers insights into the challenges and opportunities within the independent packaging industry.About MarkGrowing up in the countryside outside of a small town I learned to be fairly self-reliant and after a couple of extensive trips a love for travel. I started mountaineering at 14 with my Dad which has taken me to some pretty amazing places. At 18 I went west to work the wheat harvest before moving to Virginia to attend school at Washington & Lee University. My junior year was three of the best as I had multiple jobs over a 2 year period from construction to sales and made a trip to Mexico to climb the 3 highest peaks. Once back at school I took the opportunity to get selected for an exchange program W&L had with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. That was in 1979 when the US recognized the People's Republic Of China and it became the “new frontier” as few Westerners had traveled there since 1949. As a poor student I could not afford to join a tour but used my majors in history and philosophy and a bit of Chinese language to get a job leading tours to China. Over the next 5 years I lead over 45 trips all over China and also into Southeast Asia, India, Pakistan, the Soviet Union, Japan and others. During that period I also went to grad school and received my Masters in International Management. Not wanting to turn 30 leading tours I got a job with consortium of companies building the largest foreign invested real estate project in Shanghai. After working and managing the Shanghai Centre project for 20 plus years and also working on projects in Korea and Vietnam I went to work for Dubai World responsible for developing new real estate projects in Asia. In 2010 I received a fax from my father to come home and buy the box company he had started in 1969. He claimed I could continue to live in China as the company had a management team but that turned out to be stretch of the truth. In 2013 I moved the family away from their 23 million best friends to middle TN and began to work at Cumberland Container where I had no clue how a box was made. However the company had a very good team of leaders that I recognized I needed to even try to manage the business. After our GM left in 2016 taking a considerable amount of business we formed a management committee to run the business all of which are still at the company. I joined AICC around 2018 and began attending the meetings where I got a great introduction to a lot of new ideas and great people in the industry. I pretty quickly drank the kool-aid to get ahead we needed to have fast and precise equipment to be competitive and grow the business so over the past 5+ years we went on capital investment program buying new FFGs, RDC, Baysek, Speciality Folder Gluer, Partition Assembler, Automatan and Stitcher/Gluer. We also expanded the facility growing to 260K square feet, upgraded our shipping fleet, scrap system and graphics capability making us well positioned for the next 10+ years. Plus I bought 12 acres of property adjacent to the plant for future expansion. Cumberland has a great management group and a very capable workforce of 95...

This growth culminated in an 18-year role as Vice President of Sales and Service.Goss International recruited Mike to be its North American Managing Director and to transition its web offset printing press business from the publication and newspaper markets to the packaging markets. This challenge was successfully met, resulting in the sale of Goss to a private equity company. After Goss, Mike continued to pursue service to the paper-based packaging industry by joining AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, as Vice President in October 2016. He was elevated to the President's role at AICC on July 1, 2019. Prior to joining AICC, Mike had been a 20+ year Associate Member of the Association. Mike has served on the Board of Directors of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) including a term as Chair. He eventually landed at a distributor, where he got to know independent box makers. One of their suppliers was a sheet plant named Central Container Corp. After an encounter with one of the original owners, Jim proposed buying his half of the company. The company had a different succession plan, but the owner sold his 50% to Jim anyway because he knew Jim would succeed. Mike Haglund started at Central mowing the lawn and opening mail when he was ten years old. He continued to work summers there throughout college. After graduating college, Mike built a successful career, which included running a scrap yard and purchasing two packaging supply companies. Eventually, his father wanted to acquire his companies and fold them and him into Central, and Mike was ready to return to the family business. Sobel, an EL graduate, discusses how the EL Program has grown, what it is like to leave a family company, and trying to find his own path. Malone, a current EL, found her way into the industry by taking a leap after a chance encounter. About CassiCassi Malone, Director of Customer Experience, Corrugated Supplies CompanyCassi Malone is the Director of Customer Experience for Corrugated Supplies Company (CSC). Initially starting as a Customer Service Representative within the company 10 years ago, she has worked hard to learn as much about CSC, their customers, and the industry as possible. In her current role, Cassi oversees the service and planning operations for CSC's 9 sheet feeder operations across the country. She has a passion for learning and teaching, and is always looking to absorb as much knowledge as she can from those around her. Her passion for learning led her to AICC's Emerging Leaders group 7 years ago, where she became a member and started to immerse herself in the paper and packaging industry with other young professionals. As she came to know and love the program, she eventually took on the role as an Emerging Leaders Delegate from 2019-2022 on the AICC Board of Directors so she could help shape the program for future ELs. Cassi graduated with an MBA from Robert Morris University in 2011, and she also continued to serve as an adjunct faculty member for over 6 years at her alma mater. Cassi is a firm believer in mentorship, communication, and building relationships. Her goal is to help others find their way, just like so many have and continue to support her along the way. While SMC faced a tough start, like all box plants, Kevin Ausburn's father and his business partner, Chuck Bachus, worked through it. After earning his MBA in Accounting, he worked as a public accountant for several years before joining the family business in 1982 as the comptroller. Since then, through organic growth and acquisition he has helped SMC become a sizeable multi-plant company while maintaining a family-focused company culture. This adventure began over a family breakfast when Jim asked his family if anyone wanted to be part of a sheet plant he was considering starting. Matt was already scheduled to spend a year teaching in Ecuador, but told his dad when he got back he was in. From then on they built a company based on speed for customers and making employees feel like family. With his family now in the US, he decided that he would be home. Moving to a country he barely knew; Burgess joined his father and brother at Pamarco. With a brief detour from the company notwithstanding, that is where he created a career that would last him a lifetime. Brewer put everything he had on the line to start the company which is now in its 20th year. Acquiring Package Crafters in 2015 brought in new opportunities and challenges, especially when trying to lead from hundreds of miles away.About GaryAfter getting his degrees in chemical engineering and pulp and paper science at North Carolina State in 1992, Brewer began his career as a Process Engineer at St. Joe Paper Company in Port St. Joe. Fla. He then joined the largest independent corrugated converter in North Carolina. During that time Brewer completed an MBA at Wake Forest University and, shortly thereafter in 2003, he and his father founded Package Crafters in High Point, NC, leading with the promise of a three-day lead time to his new customers. In 2015, he extended his geographic footprint by acquiring Creative Packaging in Savannah, GA. Like his predecessors, he embraces Cascades' values and believes that everyone should work in a safe and secure environment. He continues to pursue the business objectives established in conjunction with the various management teams to ensure the growth of Cascades Containerboard Packaging and Cascades. In this episode we talk with Jana Harris.Jana has come a long way from being the child rollerskating around the boxplant founded by her parents. Always with an entrepreneurial spirit, she started a business at the age of 29, only to be forced to fire her partner a year later. Later, her compassion and education lead her to a four-year stint in healthcare. Then four years later, she and her sister, Janice Cox, now CFO of the family companies, were brought into Harris Packaging by their father after he had to replace a once-trusted employee. While Jana's path might not have been direct, with the support of family and strong teams, her companies have seen double-digit growth over the last 10 years. Now, Harris Packaging is the largest sheet plant in Texas, and American Carton is a thriving folding carton plant. Jana also shares her passion for education about and for the industry by sharing her experience working closely with UTA and a new project with a STEM high school. Jana Harris is a second-generation owner and CEO of her family's manufacturing business, Harris Packaging and American Carton. She is the current AICC Chairman and is the 3rd woman to Chair for AICC. She serves on the President's Advisory Board at her local university, the University of Texas at Arlington and is very active with their Packaging Program as well as with the College of Business. Jana and her husband Zachary Campbell became partners in a wine label out of Sonoma CA called Sanglier Cellars as well as recently becoming silent partners in a scratch Italian restaurant, Tre Mogli, which is in their hometown. In 1975 John cofounded Colordry Ltd., a UK based company specializing in the manufacture of drying and UV curing systems. After immigrating to the US in January 1982, he cofounded IVT Colordry which supplied coating and drying systems for both litho and flexo applications. In 1987 IVT Colordry received an honorable mention from AICC for supplying the first drying system in the World designed for a sheet fed flexo diecutter. In 1998 John founded JB Machinery specializing in the manufacture of drying, curing, ink management, and plate cleaning/washing systems specifically for the flexo printing industry. In 2012 JB Machinery won AICC ‘Innovator of the Year' for KleenPlate. In 2016 JB placed third with InKomand, and in 2021 won with AutoWash and placed third with DigiFlex. John served as Associates Chairman of AICC in 2008/2009. He currently lives in Westport, CT and Estero, FL with his wife and family. Alex Dafner SBS Yiddish Report:The Australian Jewish community was deeply concerned over the outbreak of violence in Jerusalem and other Israeli towns, the rocket fire from Gaza and loss of innocent lives on both sides of the conflict, whilst Australian political leaders on both sides of politics called out to leaders on both sides of the conflict to implement an immediate cessation of the violence.A new comprehensive survey on Australians’ attitudes to Jewish Australians, antisemitism, Israel and other related issues, has found that there is a low level of negative attitudes regarding these issues, despite an increase of reported antisemitic incidents, and that these attitudes have not changed much over the previous 5 years.Australian PM Scott Morrison, whilst speaking at a AICC function in Sydney, stated that his government will follow previous Coalition and Labor Governments and not participate in the Durban Declaration on racism anniversary events, because of its history of selective anti-Israel and even antisemitic declarations.

The Congress on Tuesday sacked Sachin Pilot from the posts of Rajasthan's deputy chief minister and the party's state unit chief, appointing Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasra in his place. Cracking the whip on the rebel party leader, the party also removed his loyalists Vishvendra Singh and Ramesh Meena from the state cabinet.   AICC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala announced the decision after a Congress Legislature Party meeting held here amid a tussle for power between Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.   Why Congress is facing a crisis   The ruling party in Rajasthan is facing a crisis after the rebellion by Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and dissident MLAs. Pilot has been upset about the fact he was denied the Rajasthan chief minister's post after the December 2018 assembly elections.   Pilot and his supporters claimed to have the backing of 30 Congress MLAs and some independents. The Ashok Gehlot camp has claimed that 109 MLAs, both Congress and others, are in support of the government. In the 200-member assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP, 72. And today 102 MLAs present at the CLP meeting at Fairmont Hotel in Jaipur have unanimously demanded Sachin Pilot's removal from the party. Listen to the podcast for more  

A unique online counterpart event between Australia and Israel was held on July 1 with Yigal Unna, Director General of the Israel National Cyber Directorate and Dr Tobias Feakin, the Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs & Critical Technology providing their insights into a world where, according to Mr. Unna, “the cyber-attack surface is on steroids”. Held in partnership with the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Israel-Australia Chamber of Commerce, Israel Trade Commission and MySecurity Media, the event proposed the theme: Has national cybersecurity awareness and resiliency improved in 2020 and is a new online posture necessary to better combat motivated and agile attackers?” Mr Unna opened to outline the Israel National Cyber Directorate, directed still by a 2012 Cybersecurity Strategy, with a three pillar focus on protecting access to systems and reducing the attack surface, and more broadly ensuring the strategy is applied across the ICT space and telecommunications. On a day described by the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as a ‘pivotal day’, releasing the Australian Defence Strategy and Force Structure Plan, the Prime Minister confirmed there is rising strategic risk and we are in a “global contest of our age.” In his opening address, Ambassador Feakin provided deep insights into how Australia is dedicating significant funding towards enhanced cybersecurity and how Covid19 has rapidly accelerated business digitalisation, bringing enhanced cybersecurity risks due to immediate implementation needs. The challenge in Australia relates to both how fast cyber-attacks can be detected and how fast they can be responded to. Each guest presenter confirmed electronic warfare is becoming more sophisticated and more prevalent and how ‘offensive vs defensive’ activity is a key resource consideration. The speed of attribution will become a focus of future cybersecurity defence and the role of the private sector in supporting national cyber security and delivering services will continue to increase. The session closed with consideration to the national responsibility for cybersecurity and setting ground rules for enforcement and having a deterrent capability is critically important. In particular, as technology across a wide range of domains rapidly advances. Both Australia and Israel have advanced cybersecurity capabilities, but never has there been such a demand and never has it been more important.  Future and further collaboration is undoubtedly mutually beneficial.
