Addiction is a bastard of a disease. If you have it, you don't know it. In fact, the number one symptom of addiction is that it convinces you that you aren't an addict. That's a terrible thing to get trapped in. And it's a terrible thing for the people who care about you, because you may not realise it - but your addiction affects them as well as you, and not just because they have to deal with your bullshit. It changes the way they are around others. However, every now and then - addicts have what's called a ‘moment of clarity'. A moment where they can see what they're doing, what is happening to them and those around them, and where they're headed. If you're lucky - that moment is accompanied by a willingness to do something about it, something to interrupt a cycle of damage and destruction that they otherwise are powerful to interrupt. Those moments don't last very long, so when they do - what can we do to help the addict in our lives? And what do we need to do to help ourselves? Today Osher welcomes back to the show one of the most important voices in Australia when it comes to the treatment of addiction. Diane Young, a Psychotherapist and Holistic Counsellor who is the Director of Clinical Supervision at South Pacific Private, Australia's leading treatment centre of addiction, anxiety and depression. In 1988 Diane Sherman Young was a 22 year-old working mother living in rural Indiana. Diane was married to Scott Young, whose brother -Mike - was actually married to Susan, one of Diane's sisters. Diane worked in a local convenience store and seemed by all appearances to be leading a normal, everyday life. Then, suddenly, everyday became a horror story. On May 21, 1988 a local man driving his truck on a farm road between the towns of Hebron and Kouts, Indiana saw a car completely engulfed in flames - on farm land leased to Mike and Scott Young's family. By the time firefighters put out the blaze, all that was left inside the car were the almost completely incinerated remains of Diane Young - her purse found neatly sitting up 48 feet away for authorities to find - and a melted .22 Ruger on the floor. Oh, and an empty gasoline can was sitting outside the vehicle, its handle melted off. For reasons still unfathomable, the authorities originally declared Diane's death a suicide. Wait. What? Now nearly 32 years later, the story of how a few (but certainly not all) family members pressed for, and got, a coroner's inquiry to investigate the matter, and how the facts surrounding the entire affair reveal a surreal and twisted tale of deceit, romantic and familial betrayal, sex (in various and sundry forms), greed and paranoia, leading to only more confusion - and the ultimate conclusion - as is so often the case - that someone knows the truth about Diane's death. And the truth is just barely beneath the surface.

0:00-6:20: We welcome Grant “Bongos” Bronsdon to the podcast, as we recorded this in his living room. The ‘cast begins with a rundown of the draft rules, which unfortunately have nothing to do with Dua Lipa. Also, Grant is a former magnet boy in an actual, real life MLB draft room. He explains some of the ins, outs, and what have yous of the draft, while Kate spins a brief history of former Seattle draft picks that are flourishing for other organizations. 6:20-17:30: In happier news, the Mariners are wearing teal in games that aren’t just on Fridays, and John’s family is smitten with Mac Williamson. Also, Braden Bishop has a busted spleen. 17:45-34:00: Actual draft talk! Matthew demonstrates a complete lack of understanding about farms. Kate gives an audio grade to every position group in the organization. She also drops a necessary reminder of the weakness of the 2019 draft class, and the eternal need for catchers. 34:15-43:00: Where will Mike Leake end up? Before the actual conversation, Matthew introduces a fun imagination game. The most important topic of the conversation though, is Grant a vampire? 43:00-51:15: We miss you, Jay Bruce. John discovers cigarettes. Matthew discovers Blaze Alexander. Grant discovers that nobody cares about The West Wing references in 2019. Kate discovers that Jerry Dipoto listens to our podcast. (He almost certainly does not). 52:00-58:55: Which Seattle celebrity is most likely to shove a player while sitting courtside at an NBA game? 59:00-1:01:15: BEEF DAD https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx5dLZ8jaOX/ 1:01:20-1:07:00: Shouts to the Shenton Family, Daniel Vogelbach, and nobody else. It’s been while since I’ve gotten a new podcast out the door – in fact, this is my first of summer 2013. I suppose it’s a blessing that I’ve been working so much (both DJing and in my full-time job as a journalist), that I haven’t really had time to crank ‘em out like I had been a year ago. I’ve been in a weird transition period as a DJ recently in terms of defining my sound. From the first time I finally spun an after hours party last fall, I’m learning that deep down I’m a big room guy – I prefer a more driving and dramatic sound to lighter fare. But I’m not a strictly tribal after-hours guy like Paulo or Abel, or a circuit peak king like Joe Gauthreaux or Danny Verde — I’m not an awesome tea dance master like Wayne G or Grind, or an EDM strictest like Nicky Romero or Alesso (all of whom are some of the DJ’s that I admire the most right now and love to hear out live often). Being the Gemini that I am, I have a really hard time picking one sound and sticking to it. And in that, I’m finding that which truly is my own sound. I love pop music and I love wordless tribal beats, I have gay and straight influences, and I can’t play only male or female vocals (although being gay, I’ve always loved a good screaming diva!). And lord knows, I can’t stick with a decade — you’ll yet again hear at least something in here from each of the past five of ‘em. Through it all, I came of age in New York City, so I’ll always be partial to a classic house 4/4 beat, no matter how it’s dressed up. What you won’t hear are remixes from any of the DJs whom I’ve historically been most influenced by — in the SoundCloud age, all DJs have access to a panoptic of sounds that range from official commissions to tracks put together by a teenager in their mom’s basement. There’s a new guard rising, but top talent always shines through. With the exception of a few songs, many of these remixes are by folks I’ve never used before. This podcast reflects my schizophrenia a bit, and yet I was totally conscious about its bi-polar nature when I was laying it out and recording it. It’s almost like a wedding of my influences – what’s the saying? — Something old, something new … something borrowed, something blue. I decided to start this one out very tribal in the first five tracks to build a foundation, but with a new take on some very classic and recognizable vocals. Then there’s a spurt of some new pop music, before I get into what I think is a very strong section of EDM-light (the type I love). From there I throw in a couple of more pop songs (with EDM-light remixes) before going into a few flashback tracks that you probably haven’t heard out anywhere in quite a while (a trademark of any one of my sets), before ending with five female vocals that have me singing out loud in the shower right now. And as always, my closing track might seem out of left field, but it’s the track I’m most likely to throw on at the end of the night just to make myself smile when I’m in the car driving home alone after a gig that just ended at 4 a.m. Without further delay, please enjoy a selection of tracks that have truly made the middle part of my summer ... The dog days, if you will. I think it was worth the wait. And for those of you in Chicago for Market Days this weekend, see you on the dance floor!
