Andy Warhol starb 1987. “Songs for Drella”, Lou Reed & John Cale's marvelous 1990 posthumous tribute to Andy Warhol, offers an intensely personal view of Warhol with songs and playing that rank among the finest in either man's career. Their first collaboration since The Velvet Underground, nearly 20 years earlier, led to both artists vowing never to work with the other again. Our album today, suggested by listener Nick Farmer, is “El-Rayo-X" (1981) by multi-instrumentalist David Lindley. We hadn't come across this album before, and we both agree it's a lot of fun - mainly reggae-influenced beat, but clearly Californian.   Lindley sounds familiar, probably because of his presence on albums by so many others we love – Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt to name but a few. In the segment, Lunacy, Legends and Lies we look at how Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi only stopped setting drummer Bill Ward on fire after Bill's mum called Tony a "barmy bastard" who should "grow up", and recount how, in 1989, Slash ran naked and bleeding through a resort hotel after a hallucination.  This episode has lots of stuff you may not have known before, and isn't that the fun of it? References:  The Factory, Banksy, Bowie, “Andy Warhol”, “15 minutes of fame”, Metallica, Master of Puppets, Stone Temple Pilots, MTV Unplugged, Valerie Solanis, Nico, “Waiting for the Man”, White Light/White Heat, “Words for the Dying“, Dylan Thomas, “New York”, The Church of St. Anne's Brooklyn, “Berlin”, Czechoslovakia, viola, “Fragments of a Rainy Season”, “Hallelujah”  Our email: MickandthePhatman@Gmail.com  Songs for Drella – Album El-Rayo-x – David Lindley Werewolves of London - David Lindley; Late Night with Jules Holland Song for Drella – The Movie Fragments of a Rainy Season – John Cale Nobody Like You VideoInterview Part 2

Line Up : Clara Ysé, guitare, voix, Ingrid Samitier, guitare.Son : Mathias Taylor, Benoît Letirant.► Album Oceano Nox (Tôt ou Tard 2023).

In 1989, Lou Reed released his tour de force, “New York”.   Many see this album as part of Reed's holy trinity of spectacular albums - “Velvet Underground & Nico”, “Berlin” and “New York”. Commercially & artistically successful, this album took everything back to basics, and Reed himself was quoted as saying, “This is as good as it gets – two guitars, bass and drums”. Mick and Jeff both love this late-career revival album for its strong songs, caustic lyrics, perfect observations and great word play. This deals with the "everyday" – domestic violence, child abuse, corruption, politics – and it's grittier for that reality.   The album you must hear before you die is 1988's self-titled “Tracey Chapman”.  This album, very different to what was on the charts at the time, received 6 Grammy Award nominations, winning 3. The big hit from this album was “Fast Car", which sold strongly around the world, and still features in lists of the Greatest Songs of All Time.  Needless to say, Mick and Jeff think it's a terrific single on a terrific album   Jeff leaps into the world of fashion with tips on the biggest style trends for men in 2023.  The boys talk about Abbey Road and Star Wars parody T-shirts, with Mick's Peruvian t-shirt featuring llamas crossing the famous road. At the onset of the 1980s, Reed recruited his finest post-Velvets band, including guitarist Robert Quine and bassist Fernando Saunders, and reimmersed himself in raw guitar rock on The Blue Mask (1982), addressing his fears, ghosts, and joys with riveting frankness. No longer bedeviled by his addictions, Reed adopted a more-serious if less-daring tone on his recordings, peaking with three releases that were less concept albums than song cycles: New York (1989), about the spiritual death of his hometown; Songs for Drella (1990), an elegy for his 1960s mentor, Pop art conceptualist Andy Warhol, done in collaboration with former Velvets bandmate John Cale; and Magic and Loss (1991), inspired by the deaths of two friends. A romantic relationship with American performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson rejuvenated him again in the mid-1990s, resulting in the playful Set the Twilight Reeling (1997) and the harder-hitting Ecstasy (2000).In 2000–01 Reed collaborated with director Robert Wilson to bring to the stage POEtry, which was based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. The songs from the show were also packaged, with spoken-word interludes, on The Raven (2003)—an ambitious if critically panned experiment. It was followed by Animal Serenade(2004), an excellent live recording that echoed Reed's landmark 1974 concert album Rock 'n' Roll Animal. In 2006 Reed celebrated New York City in a book, Lou Reed's New York, which collected his photography. Reed was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996 and as a solo performer in 2015.From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lou-Reed. Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:“I'll Be Your Mirror”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZudHYTya-dQ“I'll Be Your Mirror Lyrics”: https://genius.com/The-velvet-underground-ill-be-your-mirror-lyrics“Lou Reed, 1942-2013”: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/28/arts/music/lou-reed-dies-at-71.html

Welshman John Cale is a founder member of The Velvet Underground and a prolific solo artist. Over a career spanning seven decades, he sings and plays a multitude of instruments (viola, piano, guitar, et al), always questing for something new. His work, though sometimes challenging, has moments of rare beauty and musical virtuosity. Mick and the Phatman discuss the breadth of Cale's career, pointing out highlights for those new to Cale, and giving insights into a career that has never settled for the easy road. References: COVID Immunity, “1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die”, Robert Dimery, Bob Dylan, “Blood on the Tracks”, Chris Knox, Flying Nun Records, “Ghost Story”, Vintage Violence, Jonathon Richman, John Cage, La Monte Young, Aaron Copland, The Primitives, Mo Tucker, Close Watch, Hallelujah, Paris 1919, “The Island Years”, “Music for a New Society”, Sam Shepard, “Heartbreak Hotel”, Brian Eno, “Wrong Way Up”, The Bottom Line, New York, Andy Warhol, Scorgie's Rochester, Enmore Theatre, “Songs for Drella”, “Autobiography”, “What's Welsh for Zen?”, Le Bataclan, Patti Smith, “Horses”, Nico, Hit us up on our email: MickandthePhatman@Gmail.com Playlist (Spotify) John Cale - A More Accessible Collection Fears Just a Mans Best FriendFragments of a Rainy SeasonBooks What's Welsh for Zen? – The Autobiography of John Cale - Victor Bockris & John Cale VideoCale: Bowie TributeContact us If you enjoy this podcast, share it with a friend who loves music. Two films in this year's NYFF lineup take us back to the ‘60s heyday of the New York avant-garde: in the Main Slate, Todd Haynes's The Velvet Underground offers a revelatory portrait of the milieu that gave rise to the eponymous band and its boundary-pushing music, while in Revivals, Ed Lachman's Songs for Drella captures Lou Reed and John Cale in concert, paying tribute to the late Andy Warhol with riveting intimacy. On Sunday, October 3, Film Comment editor Devika Girish and Clinton Krute joined Haynes, Lachman, critic Amy Taubin, and the editors of The Velvet Underground, Affonso Gonçalvez and Adam Kurnitz, for a roundtable talk. In our wide-ranging conversation on the stage of Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center. We touched on the making of the two films, as well as the enduring legacy of the historic moment of artistic innovation they so vividly evoke. Stay tuned to filmcomment.com for more coverage of this year's New York Film Festival, both on the podcast, and in the Film Comment Letter.

Lou Reed: Why is Berlin so depressing?

After leaving The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed produced two albums - Transformer and Berlin – based around songs he'd worked on with VU. Transformer showed Reed's caustic wit and observation of the seamy culture around him.  "Walk on the Wild Side", a huge hit in 1973, featured drugs, oral sex and transvestism, and yet often features in advertising? Don't ad agency creatives listen to the words!?  Berlin, Reed's response to the demands of success, is a grittier, darker album that didn't do well on first release. Reviewers called it “disappointing”, “too dark” and “a disaster”, but it has been consistently one of Reed's most popular albums.  Mick and the Phatman don't agree about Berlin. Mick says it's a masterpiece while the Phatman says it's a morbidly depressing pile of steaming chords. Mick saw Reed in the 80's and 90's up to the Berlin live show in 2008, including the show where he introduced “Small Town” as “Here's a song for you, Sydney”!  References in this program:  Lou Reed, Kali Uchis, Deep Purple, Space Truckin', Bob Ezrin, Bowie, Berlin, Transformer, Slade, Gary Glitter, Transformer, Andy Warhol, Mick Ronson, Walk on the Wild Side, Song for Drella, John Cale, David Bowie _____________________________________Listening:TransformerBerlinContact usWhat do you think of the podcast? Es ist Freitag der 20. März 2020 in München. Und by the way. Guter beat, Jungs! Listen to Laura and Paisley's ramblings on the Pilot episode of Gilmore Girls. We go over the synopsis & most scenes, zeroing in on some fashion, literature, background information and favorite quotes. Synopsis:We’re introduced to the Gilmore girls, Lorelai and her daughter Rory, who live in the idyllic New England town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. We meet Luke Danes, owner of Luke’s Diner (the girls’ favorite spot for food and coffee.) During the scene at Luke’s we see the close bond between mother & daughter, which more closely resembles best friends. We also are introduced to the staff at The Independence Inn, the inn managed by Lorelai. Michel, the rude French man who is the concierge, the also rude Drella, the harp player & Sookie, the clumsy and quirky chef round out the staff. We meet Rory’s friend Lane who attends Stars Hollow High with her. Her parents own Kim’s Antiques and want to set Lane up with a future doctor. Rory has been accepted to Chilton, a prestigious prep school in Hartford, which should help her with admission to Harvard, her dream university. While excited, Lorelai realizes she can’t afford it, so she returns to her pretty much estranged wealthy parents to ask for a loan. They agree, but her mother Emily wants something in return: weekly Friday night dinners with Lorelai & Rory. We meet Dean, the new kid who has been admiring Rory and her nose stuck in book tendencies. They have an awkward meet-cute and eventually Rory considers not attending Chilton because of him. Lorelai refuses to let her daughter throw her life away for some guy and they have a fight. The Gilmore girls attend their first of many Friday Night Dinners at the Gilmore mansion. It turns into a disaster with Emily and Lorelai fighting in the kitchen. Rory overhears it all, including the deal made for the funds for Chilton. Here´s our fith Podcast mixed by... ...Legler&Mellow. Starting in 2007 the young, bavarian born, swedish-swiss DJ duo Legler & Mellow gathered their first experiences on the decks. It did not take long for their passion to flourish after the great attention their first Mixtapes received, leading to their first residency at one of Munich's most popular and established parties at the age of only 15. Legler & Mellow's early success which was driven by the individuality and significancy of their self created sets, was not to be kept in boundaries. In 2011 the gossip was out and Switzerland was the next destination to be mesmerized by their sounds. After playing in Zurich's renowned club Encore, the positive resonance led to venues such as Diagonal and Saint Germain demanding for the duos attention. Switzerland was cast under their spell and soon clubs such as Vivai in St.Moritz, Elephant and Trischli in St.Gallen witnessed their talent. Additional Residencies followed at Elephant Club in St.Gallen along with Switzerlands most successful parties GOLD and Club Royale. To stay faithful to their bavarian roots, the DJ Team gained an additional residency at Munich's Number one club Call me Drella, playing gigs on a monthly basis. In Summer 2012 Legler & Mellow Toured through Corfu, Greece with Munich's acclaimed party organisation Crystal Tours, allowing them to perform with acts such as Chris Lake, AkaAka, Stereo Express and round about 2700 thrilled listeners. The young, yet extremely experienced DJ Duo is known for their inimitable live-sets in which they combine a non-commercial style with splendid atmosphere shaping tracks. In addition to heating up any crowd, their talent blossoms in self produced tracks and remixes which caught the Zurich Label Ona Records' attention to which they are now signed and have released their first EP.
