Nedávno skončené olympijské hry v Paříži představili profesionální atlety ve vrcholné formě, kteří soutěžili o to, kdo z nich je momentálně v nejlepší formě. Sport byl ale v minulosti také pevnou součástí dělnického hnutí a stál na odlišných principech, než jaké představuje současný vrcholný sport. Hromadná cvičení mužů (a později na začátku 20. století také žen) vycházela z pruských turnerských cvičení, které se rozvíjely od první poloviny 19. století. V českém kontextu na ně navázal Sokol. Stále větší příklon sokolského spolku směrem k národnímu konzervativismu vedl k odštěpení sociálně demokratických členů a založení nového spolku Dělnické tělocvičné jednoty (DTJ) v roce 1897. Vznik novodobých olympijských her vedl dělnické tělocvičné jednoty k vytvoření vlastních dělnických olympiád. První neoficiální dělnická olympiáda se konala v roce 1921 v Praze na letenské pláni. Souběžně s ní se konalo také hromadné cvičení komunistických členů, kteří se v té době odštěpili od DTJ v souvislosti s vnitrostranickým rozkolem v sociální demokracii. Jak se od sebe lišily sokolové a dělnické tělocvičné jednoty? Jaké sporty byly tehdy oblíbené mezi dělníky? A do jaké míry se tyto spolky zapojovaly do potlačování sociálních nepokojů, demonstrací a stávek? To jsme probrali s historikem Boleslavem Šmejkalem. V novém dílu podcastu jsme rozebrali také nový film Vlny od Jiřího Mádla, který ale nakonec spíš pouze zapadá do zavedeného stylu filmového vyprávění o komunistickém režimu z posledních deseti let.
