Global Agile Summit Preview: Mastering Your Own Career Success as a Scrum Master with Fred Deichler In this BONUS Global Agile Summit preview episode, we explore the journey of Fred Deichler, a technology leader and the host of the product track at the Global Agile Summit (GAS). Fred shares his insights on what makes Scrum Masters successful in their roles and as individuals. Through his personal story and practical advice, Fred offers valuable lessons on continuous learning, community involvement, and self-reflection—three key elements that have contributed to his remarkable career journey. The Journey to Mastering Your Own Success "I didn't think I was different from anyone else. For me it was a long process, but for others it looked like too fast." Fred's journey of self-discovery began when someone asked him a simple yet profound question: "How did you achieve so much so fast?" This question prompted him to reflect on his career path and the factors that contributed to his success. Fred shares how this moment of introspection led him to identify the key elements that have shaped his career trajectory and personal growth, offering valuable insights for Scrum Masters looking to master their own success. The Power of Continued Education "Early in my career, I thought that my manager was there to tell me what to learn. As a manager I can inspire people, but I can't tell you what to learn." Fred emphasizes the importance of taking ownership of your learning journey. He discusses how his perception of education evolved throughout his career, moving from a passive approach to an active pursuit of knowledge. Fred highlights the significance of understanding your learning style, referencing the VARK learning model, and embraces the idea that it's okay to be different from others in how you absorb and process information. This section provides Scrum Masters with valuable insights on how to approach continuous education for personal and professional growth. Leveraging Community Involvement "Take those ideas that you learned and flesh them out with other people." Community involvement emerges as a crucial element in Fred's success formula. He shares how engaging with others helped him refine his ideas and gain new perspectives. Fred encourages Scrum Masters to: Take action and discuss ideas with others Participate in conferences as valuable learning opportunities Develop strong opinions that are loosely held Use community interactions to develop and refine ideas Through these practices, Fred illustrates how community engagement can accelerate growth and provide a supportive environment for professional development. The Value of Self-Reflection "End of the week: how do I know if I did a great job?" Self-reflection stands as the third pillar in Fred's success framework. He emphasizes the importance of regular introspection to evaluate progress and identify areas for improvement. Fred shares practical approaches to reflection: Questioning if conversations went as expected Establishing a regular reflection practice Finding a mentor or friend to reflect with Participating in lean coffee meetups for structured discussions These reflection practices have enabled Fred to continuously assess his performance and make adjustments to improve his effectiveness as a professional and as a person. From Aspiration to Achievement: The 6-in-30 Story "I was listening to the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast, and I decided ‘I'm going to be on that show one day!'" Fred shares his inspiring "6 in 30" story—a powerful testament to setting goals and working toward them. He recounts how, six years ago, while sitting in his car between jobs, he made a commitment to himself that would shape his future. Fast forward 30 months, and Fred applied to speak at the Agile Online Summit, transforming his aspiration into achievement. This personal anecdote illustrates the power of setting clear intentions and taking deliberate steps toward realizing them. In this segment, we refer to the different learning styles: VARK, Visual, Auditive, Reading/writing, Kinesthetic. Building Your Professional Network When asked about essential resources for Scrum Masters, Fred immediately points to LinkedIn as a valuable platform for professional networking and knowledge sharing. He emphasizes how building and leveraging professional connections can open doors to opportunities and provide access to a wealth of insights from industry experts. About Fred Deichler For over two decades, Fred has been a technology leader, who has been intuitively following the Scrum values and Agile principles even before discovering them. He has successfully led multiple teams on their Agile journeys, emphasizing the importance of a harmonious balance between people, processes, and tools, and continuously striving for improvement. For Fred, personal growth is as crucial as professional development. You can link with Fred Deichler on LinkedIn.

Check out Part 2 of The Coaching Podcast interview with Jo Hammer. Jo shares some valuable insights about the difference between teaching and coaching as well as the importance of unlocking the learning through numerous modalities. Here is a summary of some of the key points; Jo's research - she uses the VARK modalities tool created by Neale Flemming and educates teachers and coaches that one's learning preference is part of a style, NOT the Style! 0.54 V = Visual A = Auditory R = Read/write K = Kinestethic Your preferences can change over time and we have to work on all of the modalities How can learning be fun? More efficient? And help to provide more self-confidence? 8.00 Everything starts with conscious awareness and as a coach and/or teacher you have to be OBJECTIVE! 9.12 Know your students and how they learn. 10.20 Be mindful of the question: 'Does that make sense?!' 13.00 Instead, hands up if you are still with me? Where did I lose you? What was the last thing that made sense to you? It's not what they say, it's in their body language. Learning intentions and success criteria. 17.30 How to deal with the superstar student? 19.00 What's the difference between a teacher and a coach? 23.07 Effective coaches are across what's going on for the whole person. 25.40 Role model: Experience all the roles within the company to understand how everyone impacts your job. 27.00 Meet people where they are at. 30.00 Don't expect people to do something that you are not willing to do yourself! This week we talked to singer/songwriter Pictoria Vark. When finding herself in a new city she takes a walk to familiarize herself with the area as well as recalibrate her brain to realize she's not going 60 miles an hour. She was part of a few bands in high school before deciding to start her own project, releasing her debut EP in 2018. Inspired by the geography of where she's lived and the sentimental value of those locations, she released her debut album 'The Parts I Dread'. Pictoria Vark's The Parts I Dread is one hell of a debut. Intentional, spacious, and intimate, this bass-centered music doesn't quite have a singular point of comparison - but that just makes it even better. Our conversation hits on this unique space her music fills, using additional instrumentation to further storytelling, balancing her solo work while being a hired bassist for touring bands, and a whole lot more. The brain is an amazing thing. Its capacity to learn is almost endless. But too often the process of learning can feel boring, difficult, stressful, and even painful. In order for the brain to retain what we’ve learned, we need to deploy the right strategies. These simple approaches make learning efficient and enjoyable. Today’s guest is Collin Jewett. Collin is an industrial engineer, author, coach, and adventurer. He loves helping others rediscover the joy of learning and partnering with their brains to unlock limitless memory, boundless creativity, and unshakeable focus. Curiosity is the innate desire to ask questions. Creativity is the innate desire to answer questions and solve problems. Creativity isn’t a “have it or you don’t” thing. Creativity is the process of combining existing ideas in new ways. Memory works by associating and comparing old knowledge with new information. Analogies and metaphors are powerful because they take new ideas and put them in a familiar context. Learning that is relevant to our lives is more enjoyable and stickier. Clarify how and why this information or skill is relevant. Use the observation and visualization to get brain neurons to fire as if you were going through the motions. Devin: Mari, what’s your superpower?Mari: I love to learn new things, and I like to think that other people in this organization are motivated to learn new things because I’m constantly sending out Slack messages, e-mail messages, you know, about, check out this new article. Did you see what so-and-so said? Think about the implications for this. I find all this work incredibly important, incredibly fascinating. The other thing that I’m incredibly grateful for is that this has been a job where I learn every day.You can watch the full interview with Mari here: mari.s4g.biz.Mari Kuraishi co-founded and later led Global Giving, a nonprofit crowdfunding site for international development that could be the first crowdfunding site ever. She created it with Dennis Whittle (see Chapter 41) about a decade before Indiegogo or Kickstarter launched. While at the World Bank, Mari learned that at the same time it was providing money to a few large institutions in each country, there were millions of people and small organizations working to solve problems. These folks needed money, too. She concluded that if they received the funds required, they could solve many of their own issues.Years later, while networking, Mari met a person who responded to her introduction as a leader at Global Giving by saying, “Oh, I’ve heard of you guys. You guys work with the great unwashed.”“My jaw dropped,” Mari says. “I mean, first, because the statement was outrageous, even back in 2001, right? But then I was like, ‘Yes, damn it. We are the outfit that works for the great unwashed.’”And work she has. Since its founding, Global Giving has raised over $500 million for international nonprofits serving people in the developing world. In 2020 alone, donations reached $100 million.Mari is proud of the flexible culture she led at Global Giving. Having come from a large organization with many rules, she helped form a company governed by values instead. The company focuses on the mission and challenges employees not to complete tasks but to contribute meaningfully to accomplishing the primary goal to help people in the developing world.Mari says she’s not sure her ability and enthusiasm for learning have contributed directly to Global Giving’s measurable impact on people around the world. As the objective arbiter I’ve appointed myself to be, I am sure. Her superpower has helped change the world for the better. How to Develop Learning as a SuperpowerYou can become a better learner. If you take to it like Mari, it can become your superpower. To help me with this book, Mari agreed to a follow-up interview that you can watch here: mari2.s4g.biz.Mari notes that it is vital to know yourself. She observed that she liked to develop a plan and stick to it. Events that derailed her plans irritated her. Over the years, she’s learned to adapt and now celebrates the sorts of events that once annoyed her. She sees how even significant events that impose life-altering adjustments can be good things. She recognizes that she has found wonderful things at points in her life precisely because of a derailment.Take time to get to know yourself. Mari says one of the vital things to understand about yourself and learning is that “people learn in different ways.” You need to know what sort of learner you are.Scientists haven’t settled firmly on the number of discreet learning styles. One popular model is called VARK, an acronym for four learning styles.Visual. These learners (I think I’m in this group) learn by seeing things.Auditory. This group learns by hearing lessons.Reading and writing. Such students learn best by reading and writing about a subject.Kinesthetic. Some people learn by touching or by doing a task better than by other methods. Most people learn best in one way, but that doesn’t mean they only do it in that style. It is easy to find simplistic online assessments to help you assess your learning style. That may be an excellent place to start.Mari’s primary lesson about learning is profound. Rather than focus on learning facts, processes or skills, she talked about the need to learn about people. She said, “Every place and every person—even organizations—has a story that’s unique.”The lesson from Mari is in how we get past the surface level familiarity with people to find deeper hidden realities. She uses the example of your reaction to a friend or colleague who says, “Oh, I didn’t sleep well last night.” What you say next will determine what you learn.Imagine how different the response to each of the following reactions will be.“Well, did you drink coffee last night?”“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that; what was going on that made you not sleep well last night?”From the second reaction question, you could learn something that matters. “You might discover something about that person that you had no idea about, even though you may have been working with that person for years,” Mari says.“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” wrote Tolstoy as the opening line to Anna Karenina. Mari points out that learning to know people is about understanding Tolstoy’s message and applying it in our interactions with others. As you think about learning, you may see yourself in Mari. You may be capable of learning as a superpower. I’m convinced it can help you change the world. If it’s not your superpower, it could at least make you happier.“Anyone who is open to learning, and the change that comes from learning, might end up happier,” Mari says.
This episode gets bit more serious and informative, where we discuss about the various learning styles. In addition, we also discuss the different personal profiling tests that are out there online, and discuss about how impactful they could be when it comes to career planning and deciding which course you want to go for during your years at university/college. This episodes especially informative for those who are super confused with what they wanna do with their lives.

Learning Styles and A Paradigm Shift As an educator and a Mom, one thing I know for sure is that I want to equip my teens with everything they need to manage their own learning. Understanding how I learn best and how my kids learn best makes a HUGE difference in the way I teach – whether in the classroom or at home – AND it puts them one step closer to becoming independent, lifelong learners. Now, when I was in the classroom, that shift came about as the result of a project my entire team did at the beginning of one school year. And to be clear, after that first time we did it, it was part of our interdisciplinary curriculum every year after. For the assignment, every kid had to use a guided journal, and detail different life experiences they’d had, using 8 categories that were based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. At the end of the project, students did a presentation sharing which intelligences they were strong in and those where they were challenged. It gave us a lot of insight into our students and helped us get to know them. Bringing Learning Styles into Lessons Our challenge after the project was figuring out how to incorporate that insight into our lesson planning. If you’re a teacher, you know exactly what I’m talking about – putting together a one-dimensional lesson plan is a big challenge when you’re first starting out. And creating a one-size-fits-all assignment is certainly the simplest way to do things, but is it the most effective? To create eight different assignments – to fit ALL the different learning styles – that’s a recipe for crazy-making. The trick was to find efficient ways to hit as many learning styles as we could – and to recognize when our own learning styles were biasing us. Eventually, we got into a great rhythm, offering projects with a choice for what kinds of end products students could submit. Mixing up lesson formats to present information in a variety of styles and letting students have some freedom in how they worked in class. Learning Styles in the Time of Coronavirus Now, obviously, teachers don’t have a whole lot of wiggle room when it comes to the kinds of assignments they’re giving. During this coronavirus quarantine, the constraints of e-learning are definitely at play. But parents? Discovering your own learning style and your students could be a game-changer. Because while it’s literally impossible for a teacher to tailor instruction for each individual student (it gives me a panic attack to think about that level of work!), a parent can. Am I suggesting that parents need to know how to teach Algebra or French or Statistics or AP English? Absolutely not. What I AM saying, is that knowing your teen’s learning style can give you another tool to share with them; another way to support their learning. What It Might Look Like Imagine being able to show your visual learners how to turn class notes into visual symbols, then back into words again, to better study for a test. You could have your auditory learners explain the new math concept to you. Your read/write learners could condense class notes into a bulleted list. Or you could role-play taking the test with your kinesthetic learner, so they can practice. You get the idea – you can see how knowing those specific learning styles can be super helpful. (I’ve shared links with more information about this in the “Referenced in this Episode” section below. Different Ways to Look at Learning Styles Having said that, what I want to do next is share some different ways to look at learning styles. There are a ton of ways to “categorize” yourself – and your teens – but for our purposes, we’re going to explore 3 different ways to look at the way you learn. Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences First, and this is the one I used with my students in the project I mentioned earlier, is Gardner’s multiple intelligences. Here’s what they are: Linguistic intelligence Logical-mathematical intelligence Spatial intelligence Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence Musical intelligence Interpersonal intelligence Intrapersonal intelligence Naturalist intelligence Multiple Intelligences Learning Styles in Action The link between the intelligences and learning is that you process and learn optimally when new information is presented in the area of your strongest intelligence. For instance, if I was a history teacher talking about the American revolution, I might have someone with a strong linguistic intelligence read primary documents from the time period logical-mathematical intelligence put together statistics about the time period – population size, number of people in the armies involved, etc. spatial intelligence read (or create) a graphic novel detailing key events bodily-kinesthetic intelligence act out one of the key events or create a dance that represents key events musical intelligence study music composed during the time period and relate it to the events of the day interpersonal intelligence have a group discussion about key events of the time period and cause/effect between them (taxes & Boston tea party, etc.) intrapersonal intelligence journal as if they were someone from that time period experiencing a key event naturalist intelligence research how the natural terrain, animal population, etc. helped or hindered the American and British militaries Bernice McCarthy’s 4MAT Okay, the next kind of learning style structure we’re going to look at is the 4MAT model. This is something I dabble with as a teacher, but also as a speaker. The idea is that everyone has a question they need to have answered when they're in a new learning situation. (Go to http://theishgirl.com/ep75 to see the visual.) Type 1 likes self-reflection and looks for personal meaning. They learn by making connections. Type 2 likes facts. They think through ideas, research what the experts say on something. They learn by examining ideas. Type 3 likes doing. They experiment, build, and tinker. They learn by applying. Type 4 likes creating. They look for hidden possibilities, explore new ideas, and create and adapt. They learn by trial and error. How I’ve Used the 4MAT Learning Style The way I’ve used this, specifically, is by trying to draw in my audiences by answering the first three questions at the very beginning of the talks I give. For instance, with this blog post, I let you guys know in the beginning that my goal is to equip teens with everything they need to manage their own learning (that’s the why) and that one way to do that is by understanding different learning styles (the what) and that we’d be exploring how to use learning styles if you’re a parent who’s homeschooling or a teacher who’s creating e-lessons. (that’s the how.) The What If, I don’t really have to address, because there are those of you out there who are already thinking about, what if I used it this way with my kids? You know who you are! The VARK Guide to Learning Styles The last type of learning style structure we’ll look at is the VARK format. It was developed by Neil Fleming, and it’s an acronym for Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. If it sounds similar to the multiple intelligences – well, it is. But there are a few nuances. This is from the website vark-learn.com/ and it outlines what each category represents People with a strong visual preference for learning like: different formats, space, graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, and plans. People with a strong aural preference for learning like: discussions, stories, guest speakers, and chatting. People with a strong read/write preference for learning like: lists, notes, and text in all its formats, whether in print or online. People with a strong kinesthetic preference for learning like: senses, practical exercises, examples, cases, and trial and error. You Can Use the VARK Guide to Learning Styles Right Now The reason I’m including the VARK theory is that they offer a great questionnaire to help figure out where you land in their version of learning styles – plus, they have a resource page that walks you through learning and communication strategies that work best for your style. How I’ve Used VARK with My Family Just to give you an idea of how we’ve used them in our family; my son is an aural learner, and he was on the Academic Decathlon team this year. They had multiple reading guides on a variety of subjects that they started studying last summer. He used my podcast equipment to record himself reading the guides and downloaded them to his phone so he could listen to them all the time. My daughter, on the other hand, is a list-maker (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – she comes from a long line of list-makers) and she puts everything down on paper or in her remind or list apps on her phone to keep track of all her things. Do You Want to Equip Your Teens to Manage Their Own Learning? This isn’t something that you have to be perfect at. In fact, it’s a whole lot of messy trial and error – for parents AND for teachers. But the bottom line is this: Are you the kind of parent and/or the kind of teacher who wants to equip your teens with as many tools as you can? The kind who is teaching your teens to manage their own learning? I’m a linguistic, quadrant 4 What If, Read/Write learner. What are you? What are your teens? I’d LOVE to know! You can grab graphics for each style on my show notes page and post them on your own social media – just be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #ishlearningstyles! And teachers, I’d love to know how you’ve incorporated learning styles into your classroom – pre-COVID and now. Understanding different learning styles allows you to teach your child in a way that makes the most sense to them. Different types of learners need different things to be successful. It’s important to encourage your child to develop learning strategies that work for them. While there is some variation in learning styles, we are focusing on the VARK categorization. V stands for visual. A for aural or auditory, R is for a read or write. K is for kinesthetic. Children can have more than one learning style, but they tend to favor one over the rest. Children who are visual learners learn best through a visual representation of information. They like the data presented in diagrams, maps, graphs, charts, flow charts. For kids who are visual learners, they do well with visual instructions, so things like a chore chart or expectations chart work well for them. Children who are aural or auditory learners learn best from lectures, group discussions, radio, and from conversations. For kids who are auditory learns, they do well with verbal instructions. Children who are read/write learners learn best from text-based input/output, such as writing things down or reading lists and charts. For kids who are read/write learners, they do well when they can write down instructions or read instructions. Children who are kinesthetic learners learn best when they are moving. For kids who are kinesthetic, they do well when they can add movement to what they are learning, such as playing with a toy or taking a walk. Often ADHD children struggle with learning because we are presenting information in a style that doesn’t work for them. You’ll be able to determine which style they prefer by observing when they are successful learning information. Once you understanding which learning style your child with ADHD prefers, you can then present information using that style. Presenting information in a learning style they prefer will allow you to spend less time giving instructions while finding greater success. You can also help them find strategies for different learning styles that aren’t their preferred learning style. Stuck on determining which learning style your child prefers? Today will will be learning about the VARK model. How to meet all learning styles inside your classroom on a daily basis. We will talk about the four types of learning styles and then we will help you with ideas of how you can implement all styles into your lesson plans. Last week the podcast episode was all about cultural recognition and I shared with you 8 ways to implement cultural inclusivity in your classroom. So over the next few weeks I’ll be diving in a bit deeper with each of these ways - consider them like little mini workshops. So if you didn’t listen to last week’s episode be sure to go back and listen to #6 so that you can get the over all picture before diving into these mini workshops. We have with us today a VERY special guest, my mother! Mrs. Licko was a music teacher in the classroom for over 30 years and one of her favorite things to do in the classroom is teach to all learning styles. So I thought she would be the perfect choice for today’s interview! Here are the four learning styles we are discussing in today’s episode Visual Auditory Reading/Writing Preference Kinesthetic Today we will break these down for you because they may sound obvious, but there are some small nuances about these that are important to point out.

This episode is going to be a conversation between Angela and me about different learning styles and really getting to the bottom of how you learn, how you process and how you polish. The reason we’re going through this is because we’re both doing a lot of different creative things and we’ve found ourselves either stuck, or in the flow and we wanted to share how we’re working through that. Ready? Let’s do this! Key Takeaways: [0:50] Charlie explains how periodic struggles in his writing and learning ways to get unstuck have given rise to the idea for this podcast. [3:21] The VARK modalities are brought up when talking about learning styles but these styles also apply to communication. [4.30] If you ever you find yourself stuck learning something, try switching modalities - write/draw/move/talk it out. [6:18] Charlie’s writing issue ended up being a great example of processing and expression style differences: he should have been drawing instead! [9:45] This goes to show you that sometimes you get stuck because you’re trying to express your ideas in the wrong style. [11:30] The three different ways to work through your creative process are conceptualisation, rough expression and polished expression. [12:39] Each of these three stages may require you to use different styles: you may ideate visually, rough orally and so on and so forth. [18:25] Sometimes, just switching modes will help you work through a jam and unstick your work. [21:35] You also have to realise that working on your creations in one style or another as well as your level of mastery of that medium will not make it “less than”. [26:05] When you’re not certain what style will best suit a particular activity, just try one, any one, it will help you to zero in on what works best. [28:36] When you have mastered a medium, be even more careful because your own belief that this is your strength might prevent you trying different avenues. [29:30] Our education system does not successfully foster different learning and communicative styles. [30:27] People are happiest when they are expressing themselves and learning what style is natural for you will help you move in that direction.
