The pastors' wives are honored to have Beth Allison Barr on the podcast to chat about her new book: Becoming the Pastor's Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman's Path to Ministry. Beth has a PhD, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is James Vardaman Endowed Chair of History at BaylorUniversity in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history. She is the author of the USA Today bestseller The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Barr lives in Texas with her husband, a Baptist pastor, and their two children. In our conversation today, Beth shares the “deep cost” that came with the rise of the pastor's wife role—especially the way it limited women's opportunities to lead in their own right; how her background in medieval and women's history has shaped the way she sees the role of pastors' wives in today's evangelical church; and gives encouragement for the pastors' wives feeling stuck or silenced—who love the church but are struggling to find their place and voice in it. This conversation is educated, insightful, and full of grace for those who may disagree. Follow Along with Beth: https://www.instagram.com/bethallisonbarr/Purchase Beth's Book: Becoming the Pastor's WifeTo purchase the BOOK, head here: https://pastorswivestellall.com/bookTo shop our MERCH, head here: https://pastorswivestellall.com/shopWant to support the Pastors' Wives Tell All podcast ministry? We may be inclined to think this is somehow a recent aberration of culture or the church. This is a total misconception that it's only in recent times - the last 60 years - that women are being “allowed” into church leadership. The complaint against churches with women in leadership is that the church is copying culture. Our survey of these books introduces our listeners to Beth Allison Barr, a professor of Medieval history at Baylor University in Texas. Historian and author Beth Allison Barr joins Thinking Christian to discuss her latest book, Becoming the Pastor’s Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman’s Path to Ministry. We explore the medieval redefinitions of masculinity that reshaped church leadership, the rise of clerical celibacy, and how the Protestant Reformation unwittingly birthed a new ecclesial role: the pastor’s wife. Along the way, we talk ordination, authority, embodiment, cultural expectations, and the invisible burdens placed on ministry families. Whether you're a pastor, a pastor's spouse, or just trying to make sense of biblical manhood and womanhood in the 21st century, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

Throughout the history of the Christian Church, women have held myriad roles. They have been preachers, saints, temptations, wives, sinners, and mothers. In recent generations with the rise of mainstream Evangelical Christianity, the roles of women in the church have shifted away from positions of power and influence. In today's episode I am joined by Dr. Beth Allison Barr, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth and her latest book Becoming the Pastor's Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman's Path to Ministry. In our discussion, Dr. Barr traces the women's leadership roles in the church from the Medieval era to the modern Evangelical church and how the role of a Pastor's wife came to replace independent female leadership. Today, we're exploring the hidden history of women in ministry through the lens of the pastor's wife role. Historian Beth Allison Barr takes us on a journey that challenges everything we think we know about women's leadership in the church. We'll trace how women went from being active leaders in the early Christian church to being systematically pushed out of ministry. Barr reveals how the pastor's wife role evolved from a radical act of Protestant resistance to a complex system that both empowered and constrained women. The conversation digs into some tough terrain - how complementarian theology has created environments where women's ministry is limited, and in some cases, where abuse has been hidden. But it's not just a story of limitation. It's a powerful call for reimagining how men and women can work together in ministry. At its heart, this is a conversation about breaking down barriers, recognizing historical complicity, and creating spaces where all people can fully express their calling - regardless of gender. We'll explore how the Southern Baptist Convention became a flashpoint for these debates, why ordination became a weapon against women's leadership, and most importantly, how we might move forward toward mutual flourishing in church communities. Get ready for a conversation that challenges, enlightens, and offers a hopeful vision for the future of ministry.Beth Allison Barr (PhD, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is James Vardaman Endowed Chair of History at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history. Description: In this second installment of our special Midlife Renaissance series, the delightful Erin Hicks Moon joins Jen and Amy for a super resonant conversation to discuss what it looks like when the faith that you grew up with bears no resemblance to your current values and what matters to you today. But Erin reassures us that if our faith looked like it did 10, 15, even 20 years ago, we would not be evolving. Erin is the host and resident bible scholar of the Faith Adjacent podcast and author of I've Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having It Out with God. She's a thoughtful guide for processing our questions, curiosity, and doubt.    Women naturally come into midlife with a posture of comfort in things they are sure of and curiosity to explore the things that they aren't. There are many people searching for answers in the wilderness of faith but, as Erin reminds us, our questions can lead to a more vibrant and joyful faith. *** Segments Midlife Glowup: Trying new things Amy gives an update on her decision to go out on a limb as a newly-minted podcaster and Jen shares what it's like to date again in your fifties.  Thought-provoking Quotes: We do spiritual practices to be connected to God and I think we overcomplicate it with rigid checklists. – Erin Hicks Moon Really working through the grief, and the sadness, and anger of watching your faith be weaponized or coming from a church that has split over something really difficult, or something personal in your life, something on a world stage. I think we have to be honest in that grief. That is a really difficult thing when you're surrounded by toxic positivity in the church.Sometimes it sucks and we have to be honest about that. – Erin Hick Moon We can still have a relationship with God, we can still have faith, but it doesn't have to look the way everyone else says it should look. – Erin Hicks Moon I'm shocked when I have conversations with people who I really did not know grew up in the church and it turns out we have so many of the same beliefs; we've been evolving on parallel tracks but they just choose not to identify that way. – Amy Hardin I have never met one person who has gone through deconstruction and/or because they wanted to sin more. The overwhelming pattern is that they want to figure this out and at the end of the process, they end up with a faith that is stronger than what they began with. – Erin Hicks Moon Resources Mentioned in This Episode: I've Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having It Out with God by Erin Hicks Moon I've Got Questions Guided Journal: Prompts and Practices for Rewilding Your Faith by Erin Hicks Moon  Sarah Bessey - https://www.sarahbessey.com/ Anne Lamott - https://www.instagram.com/annelamott/ Bridgerton - https://www.netflix.com/title/80232398 Eugene Peterson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_H._Peterson The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth by Beth Allison Barr Pastor Trey - https://www.instagram.com/pastortrey05/ Dallas Willard - https://dwillard.org/ Guest's Links: Erin's website - https://www.erinhmoon.com/ Erin's Substack - https://erinhmoon.substack.com/ Erin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/erinhmoon Erin's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/erin.hicks.moon Erin's Podcast - https://faithadjacent.com/ Connect with Jen! Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! This last April I wrote a book called Create A Life You Love: How to quiet outside voices so you can finally hear your own. In the book, we talked about the voices we grow up with as women — and there are a lot of them — all telling us who we should be, what we should look like, how we should behave, how we should spend our time, what we're allowed to do, what we're not allowed to do, and more.  The most confusing thing about this is that oftentimes, the voices disagree. One section of the peanut gallery says we should be doing this, while another section would judge us HARD for doing that exact thing.  Some of the loudest voices when it comes to who a woman should be come from the church. I know they have in my life. And in a lot of ways, that's a good thing. Our faith — the bedrock of who we are and what we believe — should absolutely impact who we become. The problem is… while many of us are looking to God to tell us who we are and what we should do with our lives, oftentimes that message has gone through a bit of a game of telephone. The message started one way, but by the time it reached our ears, it was something completely different. A few years ago, I came across a book that changed my life. It's called The Making of Biblical Womanhood — How the Subjugation of Women became Gospel Truth. The book takes a look at what women are told in the church today — and then traces the thread back through history — trying to figure out where it came from and if what we're being told God wants from us is actually what God said in the first place. Today on the show, I'm so honored to get to welcome my new friend, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood, Beth Allison Barr. Beth is James Vardaman Endowed Professor of History at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history.  This episode is SO powerful — and if you have questions about what we're supposed to be doing as women and where exactly those rules came from, this episode is for you.  One last thing before we dive in:  This show is all about women supporting women — and so that's why, this season, we're doing a really fun giveaway each week as a thank you for supporting this show (and the women who put it together!). Today's bestselling author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. An academic by training and a pastor's wife by calling, Beth uses her unique voice to speak out on the relevance of medieval history to our modern world—especially concerning women in both medieval and modern Christianity. Her work is described as “smart,” “powerful,” and “a game changer” for women in modern evangelicalism. Barr is currently the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, but she also speaks and writes as a public intellectual. She has been featured by NPR and The New Yorker, and her bylines include Religion News Service, The Washington Post, Christianity Today, The Dallas Morning News, Sojourners, and Baptist News Global. She also continues to write regularly on The Anxious Bench, a popular religious history blog on Patheos. As a pastor's wife for twenty-five years, Beth Allison Barr has lived with assumptions about what she should do and who she should be.In Becoming the Pastor's Wife, Barr draws on that experience and her academic expertise to trace the history of the role of the pastor's wife, showing how it both helped and hurt women in conservative Protestant traditions. While they gained an important leadership role, it came at a deep cost: losing independent church leadership opportunities that existed throughout most of church history and strengthening a gender hierarchy that prioritized male careers.Barr examines the connection between the decline of female ordination and the rise of the role of pastor's wife in the evangelical church, tracing its patterns in the larger history (ancient, medieval, Reformation, and modern) of Christian women's leadership. By expertly blending historical and personal narrative, she equips pastors' wives to better advocate for themselves while helping the church understand the origins of the role as well as the historical reality of ordained women.✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Books are like buses. When you open up a book, it will take you to a new place. It will take you on a new adventure. Sometimes the book will take you on a journey of the imagination to a new country or a science fiction place. Sometimes the book will take you on a path of learning you've never explored before, and that path will lead you down other paths, and then those paths will lead you down even more paths, and you will be able to meander through information that delights your mind and opens you up to new ideas and ways of looking at the world. Books shape the way we think, feel, and show up in the world. They can even influence who we hang out with, who we agree or disagree with, and how we approach those agreements or disagreements. Books are important. They have just as much influence over us as people do because they are written by people with bias, people with their own programming, people with their own lived experience or lack thereof. Charlie Jones once wrote “Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Choose both carefully.”When it comes to books about deconstruction, I've found some to be life-giving and hope-saturated, and I've found others to be depressing and hopeless. In today's episode, I talk about some of the books that have changed my life and my relationship with God. For the better! Read the show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Books on books on books: Gaslighted by God: Reconstructing a Disillusioned Faith by Tiffany Yecke Brooks (and the podcast interview I did with her)Holy Ghosted: Spiritual Anxiety and Religious Trauma and the Language of Abuse by Tiffany Yecke Brooks (and the podcast interview I did with her)All the Scary Little Gods by Yours TrulyFaith Beyond Doubt: Why Your Beliefs Stopped Working and What to Do About It by Brian McLarenA Spiritual Evolution by John McMurrayLove Wins by Rob BellSearching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church - a memoir by the late Rachel Held EvansThe Sin of Certainty: Why God Desires Our Trust More Than Our "Correct" Beliefs by Peter EnnsThe Bible Tells Me So: Why Defending Scripture Has Made Us Unable to Read It by Peter EnnsHow the Bible Actually Works by Peter EnnsThe Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth by Beth Allison BarrAttached to God by Krispin Mayfield (and the podcast interview I did with him)Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening By Diana Butler BassAre you wondering what is happening inside your own painful and confusing marriage? This week I'm re-releasing my conversation with Beth Allison Barr, author of the book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. I'm joined by two guest co-hosts, Emily Autenrieth and Laura Agase. The theology and practice of complementarianism in conservative Christian circles has shaped the lives of millions of women. For over a century, it has oppressed women and become a requirement for involvement and belonging in conservative churches. Dr. Barr's expertise in church history illustrates that - despite the claims of complementarianism's proponents - this is a newer understanding of Christian history and scripture, and not an unchanging, millennia-long orthodox belief. This is a book that has spurred conversation inside and outside the church. You can purchase the book here or from A Seat at the Table Books. Halfway There | Christian Testimonies | Spiritual Formation, Growth, and Personal Experiences with God

Beth Allison Barr is the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University and author of the book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Today, Beth shares how she grew up knowing Jesus, learning that there were some things women didn't do, and how intellectual curiosity is deeply important for her spiritual journey. We also discuss how knowing Church history and taking a curious approach to biblical interpretation can shape our faith in positive ways. Beth's story reminds us that understanding church history with an inquisitive mind is a vital part of Christian growth. Listen to Beth's story here or where you get your podcasts. Stories Beth shared: Growing up in a Christian family in Texas Never not knowing faith in Jesus and getting baptized as a young woman Realizing that there were expected gender roles in high school Using her intellectual curiosity and how that clashed with a literal interpretation of the Bible The distinction between man's interpretation of God and who God really is Meeting her husband Seeing churches regressing in terms of intellectual curiosity Why KJV only is problematic Why historical context is critical to understanding texts How medieval history can help us now Being angry at God and the letters of despair that helped her When God spoke to her after her husband was fired Historical context and how it helps our hermeneutic Great quotes from Beth: My parents were never afraid of me being curious. My story fits into a story that's a lot bigger than me and I'm thankful to be part of that story. Historical context does not diminish the Bible as God's Word. It just helps us better understand God's Word. God does not look like the white, Evangelical church. From social roles to modesty rules, there are many messages that have negatively impacted the way women have come to perceive themselves, their bodies, and their position in the world. Questions like:  are Cultural Roles biblical?  Is Modesty really about my clothing? What does it mean to be a Christian woman? We combat the stereotypes and stigmas by going back to scripture and defining the biblical invitation to women (and men). Here are some of the points we will conclude with as a way to reconstruct a clearer view of women.   #1 Jesus is a supporter of women #2 Jesus preached equality of value & uniqueness of personhood  #3  God cares more about our hearts than our hemlines   Resources:  Freedom 4/24 https://www.freedom424.org @CQcollectivehttps://instagram.com/thecqcollective?igshid=MmJiY2I4NDBkZg==   Jesus Through the Eyes of Women by Rebecca McLaughlin Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church The Emotionally Healthy Woman by Geri Scazzero  The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood: How God's Word Consistently Affirms Gender Equality The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel TruthSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Becky Castle Miller is a PhD student in New Testament at Wheaton College with Esau McCaulley, researching emotions in the Gospel of Luke. She did her master's thesis on emotions and discipleship under Scot McKnight. She writes and speaks on emotional, mental, and spiritual health in the church. She and her husband and their five kids and cat returned to the US in 2020 after living in the Netherlands for eight years, where she served as a discipleship director at an international church. Today, Becky shares about growing up homeschooled, the moment God loved her and the belief she had to let go of, and some practices to try when church gets difficult. Plus, she encourages you to learn and understand your emotions because Jesus cares about them, too. Listen to Becky's story in your favorite podcast app now! Stories Becky shared: Moving back to the US during the pandemic Studying emotions in the Gospel of Luke Tracing the history of teaching on emotions in the American church Growing up as a military kid all over Being homeschooled using Abeka curriculum Forcing herself into the box of American fundamentalist Christianity Realizing that she believed God loved her less because she was a woman Experiencing an emotional breakdown and what she learned about herself Practices for interacting with the Bible Talking out  her ideas in real time Discovering church icons and why they are valuable Great quotes from Becky: If we're suffering under legalism, that's not an easy yoke. I had to face the fact that I had believed that God loved me less because I was female. When Scriptures are used against you, it is hard to read the Bible. Men lead. Women follow. The Bible tells us so. Or does it?  Is there a divine order when it comes to men and women? What if so-called “biblical womanhood” isn't biblical at all but arose from a series of clearly definable historical moments? What if there is a better way forward for the contemporary church? Dr. Beth Allison Barr lays out clear evidence that there is in her book, “The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth.” Barr is a professor of history and former associate dean of the Graduate School at Baylor University. She's been teaching world history for more than two decades while also a pastor's wife. And as she'll tell you, there's more to the story when it comes to those verses on women's submission and silence. In this episode, she shares some of the evidence, calls to flip the Christian narrative around patriarchy and offers a vision for a truly biblical view of womanhood. WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? Take our quiz. Do you squirm every time you listen to a reading from one of St. Paul's letters calling women to be submissive to their husbands or to remain silent in church? In this episode of the Gloria Purvis Podcast, Gloria digs into the sticky “household codes” that St. Paul outlines in the New Testament with historian Beth Allison Barr, author of the bestselling book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Gloria and Beth discuss the Christian Evangelical concept of complementarianism, which is distinguished from the Catholic notion of complimentarity found most especially in Pope John Paul II's writings. While both terms speak to the differences between the sexes and posits these features as complimentary to one another, complementarianism reinforces a hierarchy of male headship and female submission that “ is simply historic patriarchy,” according to Barr.  One of the many dangers of a theology that centers men is evident in the sexual abuse crisis, where, “the emphasis is on protecting the male leaders instead of protecting the people they harm,” says Beth, and that “the sexual abuse coverup, which went on for decades, was concentrated in churches that lean towards more complementarian understandings.” There's also a connection between patriarchy and racism. Gloria notes Jordan Peterson's “open hostility toward diversity, equity and inclusion” and Beth adds, “Once you buy into a theory of oppression, it is much easier to buy into other theories of oppression. Once you accept the idea that there is something innate about the way some people are born, that makes them able to hold leadership in a way that other people cannot, it makes it much more easy for you to argue even further that not only does it have to do with sex, but maybe it also has to do with skin color.” Please consider supporting the Gloria Purvis by getting a digital subscription to America Media at www.americamagazine.org/subscribe Links from show:  Beth's book: The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth John Piper on the submission of a wife to an abusive husband: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OkUPc2NLrM Ravi Zacharias story at Roys report: https://julieroys.com/investigation-finds-ravi-zacharias-reportedly-raped-a-massage-therapist-sexually-molested-others/ Learn more about your ad choices. Hey hey! Today's episode is a must-listen, friend! I am so convinced that this is 100% true I am bringing this conversation back from the archives! You're certainly in for a treat as we revisit this powerful discussion with historian, pastor's wife, and author, Dr. Beth Allison Barr.  Listen in as we talk about her book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood, in which she outlines the definition of biblical womanhood and how it affects women's choices about careers, their roles in ministry, their relationship dynamics, and so much more. Beth shares how biblical womanhood isn't biblical but actually arose from a series of clearly definable moments in history. Friends, this is a game-changer conversation for sure! Beth Allison Barr is the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University. She earned her PhD in Medieval History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the bestselling author of four books including The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. She is also a pastor's wife and mom of two great kids. Listen in to hear all about: How to become more biblically literate by approaching the Bible with a contextual understanding of the time it was written. What the Reformation cost women in terms of opportunities and societal norms. Ways culture shapes our view of women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible. Favorite quotes: ~Biblical womanhood is one of the most recent manifestations of the patriarchy. ~I think the cost of the reformation for evangelical women is that it made only one right way for us to be Godly. And that was to be married with children under the authority of our husbands. ~Culture shapes the way we view women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible. ~There was a wage gap in the medieval world. Women made about 71 cents to the dollar, if we put it in modern terms. And here we are in the 21st century and women make about 75 cents to the dollar compared with men for doing the same jobs. I think that is a very powerful example of something  going on in which women's work is not valued in the same way as men. That women are seen as not as not quite as good as men around them. “Biblical womanhood” is the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers. From career choices to local church roles to important relationships, the everyday lives of millions of women —and men— in North American Christianity are shaped by this belief. But in her paradigm-shifting book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth, Baylor University historian Dr. Beth Allison Barr explains why biblical womanhood isn't as biblical as we've been told. She shows how this belief is a product of human civilization, not a divine ordination. Her timely book provides needed context for contemporary teachings about women's roles in the church, providing us all a path forward out of a debate that has devolved into a quagmire. In the first half of this conversation, Beth shares some of the history of women's roles in the church and home that many American Christians are unaware of. Then, Mark and Beth discuss the real-world implications of gender hierarchy —including widespread abuse and the crisis of masculinity plaguing complementarian church culture— and the hope of what a better future could look like. “I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent,” the pastor paused for breath and stretched out his hands to the congregation, trying by the power of his will to disbar the sleep from their eyes, for it was only seven in the morning, and a miracle that any of them were there at the appointed time. His voice called across the empty pews, “by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.” The assembled ten people, bilious from the carb-laden stupor of previous evening's Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, wrestled their wandering minds to the liturgical mat and began to confess their sins.It is an ancient practice — the observation of Lent — and one that for many, especially in the apocalypse of COVID-19, is falling by the way. It is becoming a vestigial yet beautiful anachronism for which formerly religious people feel nostalgia, without being able to remember why they obeyed when the church called for their penitent attention. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her online-exclusive article, “Haven't We All Sacrificed Enough: A Christian Tries to Observe Lent”. https://www.equip.org/article/havent-we-all-sacrificed-enough-a-christian-tries-to-observe-lent/Starting in February 2021, online-exclusive articles, have been locked and are only available for Journal subscribers as noted below; however, given the time sensitive nature and global importance of this subject, our editorial board decided to make this available to the public as soon as possible. Episode SummaryMen are in charge and women submit. Men lead and women follow. Men have a biblical mandate from God to lead the Church and the home while women are ordained by God to be silent and submissive not only to their husbands, but every other male leader they encounter in the Church. These are the lies many of us grew up believing. These are the lies keeping so many women in abusive relationships the world over. These are the lies "theobros" want you to believe. Well, thank God for Dr. Beth Allison Barr and her historical and theological understanding of the New Testament world.Author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood, Dr. Barr joins us today to discuss a more accurate and historical look at some of the “texts of terror” that have been used against women for almost 1,700 years. Instead of Scripture supporting patriarchy and misogyny, the New Testament actually proves that from the very beginning, women had equal footing in the Church. However, due to dominator theology and the men who created it, we've all but lost the sort of revolutionary gender equality espoused by the Early Church. If you've always wanted an apologetic for female equality in the church and home, this episode is for you!BioBeth Allison Barr received her B.A. in History (with a minor in Classics) from Baylor University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the author of The Pastoral Care of Women in Late Medieval England, co-editor of The Acts of the Apostles: Four Centuries of Baptist Interpretation, co-editor of Faith and History: A Devotional, and—most recently—the author of the best selling The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Dr. Barr writes regularly on The Anxious Bench, a religious history blog on Patheos, and has contributed to Religion News Service, The Washington Post, Christianity Today, The Dallas Morning News, Sojourners, Baptist News Global, etc. Her work has been featured by NPR and The New Yorker, and she is actively sought as an academic speaker. You can find more about her public writings, interviews, and podcasts on her website http://bethallisonbarr.com. Since receiving tenure in the History department in 2014, Dr. Barr has served as Graduate Program Director in History (2016-2019), received a Centennial Professor Award (2018), received appointment as a Faculty-in-Residence for the LEAD Living and Learning Community in Allen/Dawson Residential Hall (where she has lived and served since 2018), and served as an Associate Dean in the Baylor Graduate School (2019-2022). She is also a Baptist pastor's wife and mom of two great kids.If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a rating and a review

“In any case,” writes Rachel Held Evans in the middle of her posthumously published work, Wholehearted Faith, “I wonder sometimes whether we're playing at death and calling it life.” In characteristic and prescient candor, at the time of her death, Held Evans was in the act of asking the peculiar and essential questions that strike to the heart of what it means to be a creature created by God. She was circling around the most elemental issues of Christianity, of death and life, of love and truth. In her last words, we find a legacy of doubt, the grief of a person who was putting her finger on the central point without yet acknowledging the Verity Himself—Jesus—standing before her. Along with the beautifully illustrated children's book, What Is God Like, Wholehearted Faith gives us a picture of what sort of god Held Evans was sketching out—not the God of the Bible, not of Jesus who makes that God known to us in the fullness of his astonishing and glorious mercy, but the god of ourselves. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her online-exclusive article, “The Windswept Plains of the Heart: A Review of Wholehearted Faith and What is God Like.”https://www.equip.org/article/the-windswept-plains-of-the-heart-a-review-of-wholehearted-faith-and-what-is-god-like/Starting in February 2021, all online-exclusive articles, have had a early access window for Journal subscribers only before being made public. In Conversation… with Frank Schaeffer

Frank Schaeffer In Conversation with Beth Allison Barr, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth_____LINKShttps://twitter.com/bethallisonbarr_____Biblical womanhood—the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers—pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments. This book moves the conversation about biblical womanhood beyond Greek grammar and into the realm of church history—ancient, medieval, and modern—to show that this belief is not divinely ordained but a product of human civilization that continues to creep into the church. Barr's historical insights provide context for contemporary teachings about women's roles in the church and help move the conversation forward.Interweaving her story as a Baptist pastor's wife, Barr sheds light on the #ChurchToo movement and abuse scandals in Southern Baptist circles and the broader evangelical world, helping readers understand why biblical womanhood is more about human power structures than the message of Christ._____Beth Allison Barr (PhD, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is associate professor of history and associate dean of the Graduate School at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history. How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. This episode is a conversation we've been looking froward to for a long time. Dr. Beth Allison Barr stops by the podcast to discuss her book "The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth." Dr. Barr talks to us about her upbringing and how she came to challenge the traditional understanding of women's roles in the Bible and in the modern church. How has culture influenced translations? What does the Bible, Jesus and even Paul actually say about male headship and the role of women? What can we see when we dive into the history of it all? If the teachings and translations on this topic are inaccurate, how do we have them and why? It's a long and messy topic. African Traditional Religion (ATR) encompasses all indigenous African philosophies, worldviews, and religious practices south of the Sahara Desert. Though by no means a fixed religious system, sub-Saharan African cultures by and large share many similar views of God, the ancestors and spirits, honor and shame, magic and witchcraft, and rites of passage. While God is not considered to be near, or “close by,” he is nevertheless part of a hierarchical yet holistic spiritual world, mediated to humanity by ancestors and spirits. Moreover, spiritual power is bound to the material and physical realm. The separation between the visible and invisible is very thin, in some cases non-existent. The unseen world of ancestors, spirits, and magic orders the day-to-day experience of the African Traditionalist.Although one should not presumptuously generalize about the rites and customs of each place and people, it is useful to draw out the contours of the beliefs commonly shared by African societies. This is so for at least two reasons. The first is the proliferation of America's chief export to Africa — the prosperity gospel. The individualistic message of personal wealth accumulation from the hands of God by means of a false definition of faith has taken much of the world, but particularly Africa by storm. The second is the adoption of atomized, “a la cart” rites and beliefs from ATR by younger Americans. For example, the adoption of the Nigerian Ifá religion by Patrisse Cullors of Black Lives Matter (BLM) has a uniquely American flavor. It is useful for Christians encountering certain Ifá or other ATR rites and invocations at, say, a BLM rally, or in reading about them on social media, to investigate their origins as part of understanding how they are exploited in an American context. In this way, Christians might respectfully preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to their neighbors and friends. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her article in the current (Oct 2021) issue of the Journal entitled, “African Traditional Religion, Black Lives Matter, and Prosperity Gospel.”https://www.equip.org/article/african-traditional-religion-black-lives-matter-and-prosperity-gospel/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal. Of the legion of ways that we, since the dawn of time, have devised to deceive ourselves and others, the insidious cruelty at the heart of the phenomenon called gaslighting is one of the most fascinating and destructive. Derived from the play Gas Light (1938), the expression is visceral, referring to the deliberate attempt by the villain to drive the heroine insane. Gaslighting is a useful umbrella trope for understanding many different kinds of damaging online behavior. Gatekeeping, tone policing, outright lying, and the demand to “do better” all constrain members of online communities through fear rather than love. Whether in private groups or in public threads, hapless and naïve Christians fall prey to intentional and unintentional gaslighting and often turn to gaslighting themselves when they fail to make themselves understood. The whining, crazed rage of the heroine in the 1940 film Gaslight, adapted from the play, well reflects the tenor and feelings of many people when they encounter the toxicity of social media. They know something is wrong, they feel themselves going mad, but they are powerless to tell the truth, or even to trust their own perceptions.Only by a renewed embrace of the objectivity of Scripture married to a biblical definition of love can Christians return to the sober reasoning of honest discourse. Where ideology clouds the perception of truth, Christians can measure everything by the light of Christ in the Scriptures. They need have no changeable orthodoxy, nor grasping appeals to gatekeeping, tone policing, or gaslighting. Rather, they might recapture the lost virtues of debate and a life-giving search for truth. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her article in the 43:2 issue of the Christian Research Journal, “For Our Lamps Are Going Out: Gaslighting in the Age of Social Media ”. https://www.equip.org/article/for-our-lamps-are-going-out-gaslighting-in-the-age-of-social-media/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal. Would a Spiritual Director be helpful to me to draw closer to the heart of God or would this be one more interesting diversion from personally hearing from God? How do we think about Spiritual Direction in community? Almost all the exotic pets of my childhood in Africa were rescues, caught out of the bags of hunters and the clutches of small children who just wanted a more interesting dinner than maize porridge. I was the only one who mourned them. And, in the case of Ash, though all my family loved him, I am the one who still can't look at his grave in our back garden. And I am not alone. Join any peculiar dog breed group on Facebook and you will find countless prayer requests—long shot, hopeless pleas for God, to whom the poster has probably never prayed before, to spare a dog. Members of these groups pray, to whomever they imagine, because they understand the peculiar agony of the loss of a helpless and innocent creature who they were sure couldn't die—and yet did. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about about his online-exclusive, “Meditation Upon the Death of a Pet”. https://www.equip.org/article/meditation-upon-the-death-of-a-pet/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal. “Go, be free!” concludes Beth Allison Barr in her recently released, best-selling book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women became Gospel Truth. In the intersection of her life in the classroom and the strictures placed on her by her local church, her beliefs about women radically shifted. Eventually, after a difficult conversation with the theologically unbending complementarian elders at her Southern Baptist Church, Barr and her husband, the youth-pastor, were asked to leave. “This book is my story,” she writes, “a white woman whose experiences as a pastor's wife and scholar have led me to reject evangelical teachings about male headship and female submission. I am fighting against patriarchy for women.” Part medieval history, part personal narrative, and part examination of the condition of women in complementarian circles, Dr. Barr (a history professor at Baylor University) applies a feminist hermeneutic to Scripture and history, purporting to discover a malign patriarchal inclination, if not an actual conspiracy by complementarians to write women out of the Bible, out of the church, and back into their homes to their highest calling by God as wives and mothers. This a conversation with Journal contributing writer Anne Kenney about our in-depth critical review of The Making of Biblical Womanhood. https://www.equip.org/article/be-free-the-making-of-biblical-womanhood-a-summary-critique-review-of-the-making-of-biblical-womanhood-how-the-subjugation-of-women-became-gospel-truth-by-beth-allison-barr/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal. Hold on to your bonnets, Holy Posters. Phil is joined by Kaitlyn Schiess and, while Skye’s away, guest host Mike Erre to talk about the scandals and misogyny plaguing evangelicalism. Phil wonders—are these bugs or features? And is it possible to love evangelicals but hate evangelicalism? Kaitlyn and Mike also explain what keeps them committed to Jesus and his church amid so much mess. Then, Skye talks to Baylor University history professor Beth Allison Barr about her new book, “The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth.” Barr explains why Paul’s writings about women are widely misread, how women have led throughout church history, and how the Reformation created the domesticated vision of womanhood still idealized by the church today. All of that, plus science can’t explain a sea worm’s perplexing number of posteriors. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/marine-worm-sprouts-hundreds-butts-180977715/ https://twitter.com/albertmohler/status/1391499883153080324 https://twitter.com/ostrachan/status/1391831083826696193 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/love-the-evangelical-hate-the-evangelicalism/id1523542249?i=1000521265414 https://www.amazon.com/Making-Biblical-Womanhood-Subjugation-Became/dp/1587434709/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Beth+Allison+barr&qid=1621441692&sr=8-2 https://www.patreon.com/posts/51444763

This week's guest is Beth Allison Barr, author of the new book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. I'm joined by two guest co-hosts, Emily Autenrieth and Laura Navarro. This is a book that will spur conversation inside and outside the church. You can purchase the book here or from A Seat at the Table Books. Men lead. Women follow. The Bible tells us so. Or does it?  Is there a divine order when it comes to men and women? What if so-called “biblical womanhood” isn’t biblical at all but arose from a series of clearly definable historical moments? What if there is a better way forward for the contemporary church? Dr. Beth Allison Barr lays out clear evidence that there is in her new book, “The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth.” Barr is a professor of history and associate dean of the Graduate School at Baylor University. She's been teaching world history for more than two decades while also a pastor's wife. And as she’ll tell you, there’s more to the story when it comes to those verses on women’s submission and silence. In this episode, she shares some of the evidence, calls to flip the Christian narrative around patriarchy and offers a vision for a truly biblical view of womanhood. This week Mitch and Autumn talk about the trial of Derek Chauvin, troop withdrawal, and the Johnson and Johnson vaccine pause. Later, Beth Allison Barr joins the show to talk about her new book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. Biblical womanhood--the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers--pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It arose from a series of clearly definable historical moments. In this episode we discuss the concept of “Biblical Womanhood” from a historical perspective. To do so we are joined by Dr. Beth Allison Barr, who is Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor of History at Baylor University (Waco, TX), and the author of the forthcoming book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth (with Brazos). In her new book, Dr. Barr contends that “Biblical Womanhood” isn't biblical at all, but rather is the product of people. She relays to us in our conversation some of the ways that she defends that thesis in her book, some key insights and motivations behind writing the book, and also some of the plans she originally had for certain chapters. Along the way we make reference to Jordan Peterson, whether a concept like “Biblical Womanhood” can be salvaged and reinvested with new meaning, the cultural tensions of patriarchy and feminism, and the implications of Dr. Barr's new book for recent sexual abuse scandals that have come to light regarding Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include Amber Bowen, Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Grace Emmett, and Dr. Chris Porter.
