On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Editor-in-Chief Rob Thomas speaks with Mike Karnath, CCM, CCE, General Manager / COO of Wanakah Country Club in Hamburg, N.Y. Wanakah Country Club is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year and recently had a Gala, Family BBQ, and donor appreciation party. Earlier in the year the club hosted a kickoff event, “A Taste Through Time,” held the New York State Men's Amateur Championship, approved a $5.6 million irrigation and bunker project to ensure the club's long-term viability, and invested in the club this year with a major pool renovation, and the addition of three new pickleball courts. Thomas also discussed some recent news taking place across the industry, including the reopened Estates Course at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club, an overhaul of King's North at Myrtle Beach National, and the sales of Plantation Palms Golf Club and Salem Glen Country Club. The Arizona Biltmore Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. reopened its Estates Course after close to 6,000 trees, hedges and bushes were added and numerous playability improvements were made in the last 60 days. Architect Brandon Johnson is overseeing a two-year, two-part project (the back nine will enjoy an overhaul in the summer of 2025) on King's North at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) National. Owners target an early October reopening. Leisure Investment Properties Group facilitated the sales of Plantation Palms Golf Club in Land O' Lakes, Fla., and Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. Both new ownership groups plan substantial renovations to enhance their offerings and community appeal.

[From Jan. 17, 2022] Bobby and Alex are back with a very special episode this week. They've invited on their friends Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman of Céspedes Family BBQ to do the unthinkable: draft the owners who they would actually want — or wouldn't hate — to have running their team. Some of the choices may surprise you and some may not, but the episode reveals the colorful history of some of baseball's lesser known owners and is sure to give you a better understanding of the billionaires who run the sport we love to hate and hate to love. In a testament that the team is buying into the coaching and leadership of the organization, the Washington Commanders were ready as soon as practices started. Sam Howell was sharp early and the receivers were cooking the Ravens secondary. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel took turns abusing their defenders as Sam Howell continually fed them on time and accurate throws A few surprises as Efe Obada took first team reps at defensive end in place of Chase Young who sat out as a precautionary measure. There were more than a couple fights as things got feisty as practice continued in the 90+ degree heat and humidity as cooler heads prevailed as both head coaches were very satisfied with the practices between the teams.

America's pastime is back, and so is our favorite Brad Pitt Excel Spreadsheet vehicle, MONEYBALL. We banter about how the movie has aged just a year after our first conversation about it. This movie didn't ruin baseball...did it? Plus, we have some very special guests. Jake and Jordan from Céspedes Family BBQ somehow made it 11 years without seeing MONEYBALL, but we got the scoop from them on their first watch. And finally, we're joined by Scott Hatteberg, 1B from the infamous 2002 Athletics team. He was played by Chris Pratt in the film, and he shares some inside stories from that season and the film set. Chris (Crawford_MILB) welcomes Jordan Shusterman and Jake Mintz, the cofounders of Céspedes Family BBQ (@CespedesBBQ) for a wide ranging discussion of everything baseball.
BBQ is all about Family. Always has been, always will be. But do you know what's better than sharing a Family BBQ? Starting a Family BBQ Business. In the case of Todd Hill from Jackalope Trading Co, it's a Family BBQ Rub Business. And when it comes to small business ideas, isn't that the best kind? In all seriousness, Jackalope Trading Co spice rubs are some of our favourite BBQ rubs here at Smoking Hot Confessions. Their 'Dark Side' seasoning is quite possibly the best coffee rub on smoked brisket that we've ever tried. In our offset smoker, it's just magic. The aroma this dry rub gives off while the food is cooking is otherworldly. And no, we're not sponsored by Jackalope! In this Episode of the Smoking Hot Confessions BBQ Podcast, Todd and I get into: How Todd likes to make pastrami at home (5:36) Why North African Barbecue is one of his favourite styles (10:27) His interesting new business model (15:50) What motivates Todd to keep up such an intense work ethic on his food business (19:56) How last year was a good thing for his business (25:49) Why he prefers to grind his BBQ rubs by hand (30:56) How to balance flavours with cooking food with barbecue seasoning (37:47) The difference between a herb and a spice (45:59) This episode of the Smoking Hot Confessions BBQ Podcast is proudly brought to you by our Podcast Partner, JAGRD Woodfired Smoker Ovens.
