Remember when Lena Dunham played a character who, in a haze, made reference to herself as the voice of her generation, and this got treated in media coverage as Dunham personally thinking she represented a generation? Anyway.West, you see, is a White Feminist of the most troubling kind: the one who believes herself to be aware of her privileges. It is precisely this self-presentation – as One Of The Good Ones – that all but sets up a review critiquing a failure to acknowledge privilege. Yes, Jerkins notes throughout the review, West makes note of the plight of people other than herself. But when she does so, “her concern feels perfunctory.”Among other sins, West “willfully ignores the ways that prejudice against the L.G.B.T. community intersects with so many other kinds of oppression — or else, just as damning, she simply doesn't see it.” Also willfully ignored or simply unseen: “that white women can be just as invested in white supremacy as their male counterparts.” And, needless to say, “West never acknowledges the epidemic of violence toward black trans women.” Had she done so, though, would that have been enough, or would that, too, have felt “perfunctory”?West writes regularly about not just sexism but discrimination against fat women, of whom she is one: “‘As for ‘Friends'? West says, ‘I need a separate therapist just to deal with Fat Monica.'”Jerkins is unmoved:“O.K., fine. She's pointing out that women can be pathologized for their intelligence and that fat women are a constant source for jokes. This may be true. But West never connects the dots to the bigger picture, where white women have been overrepresented in media since time immemorial…”What conclusions can be drawn from all of this? So many!1) It's unacceptable to write about suffering if there's still-greater suffering out there unless you fully reckon with the hierarchy of suffering. But!2) It's better, strategically, to skip privilege disclaimers and brief references to others' plights entirely, if what you're trying to do is write about your own (perhaps legitimate) grievances.3) Don't tweet. Oh wait, this was a book, not a tweet? Then we can't help you. This is a public episode. A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots New York Times bestselling and National Magazine Award-winning author Morgan Jerkins will be at the Main Library this October to discuss Wandering in Strange Lands, the powerful story of her journey to understand her northern and southern roots, the Great Migration, and the displacement of black people across America. B. Cox and Domo review Brandy's classic sophomore album Never Say Never as it turns 25. In this episode, Zen chats with Rev. Dr. Marcus Jerkins about his book, Black Lives Matter to Jesus: The Salvation of Black Life and All Life in Luke and Acts. The book explores the significance of Black characters in the theological story of salvation told throughout Luke and Acts. Here's the books blurb: ############## The third evangelist makes Black-skinned people central to his claim in Luke and Acts that the gospel of Jesus is restoring the children of God. Within Luke's literary environment, the identity of the children of God was linked to national/ethnic identity. Many Jewish texts argued for the Jews' position as God's children because they are bound to God by covenant; they are God's firstborn. But there is also a more general sense within this tradition that all human beings are made in the image of God and are, thus, the children of God through Adam. In the Gospel, Luke asserts that all nations and all ethnicities, including Israel, have questionable filial status vis-à-vis God. Both Israel and the nations are restored in status as God's children through Jesus, the Son of God. In Acts, Luke explores the initial return of Israel and all ethnicities to God through the witness of the church empowered by the Spirit. To epitomize the return of all nations to God, Luke narrates the salvation of Black-skinned Africans. These Black lives are emphasized to signify that their representation in the church demonstrates the universal extent to which the salvation of Jesus Christ will reach. Their presence in the church is also meant to dignify their Black skin against an aesthetic bias that was prevalent in Greco-Roman views at that moment. This subversion of ethnographic bias helped Luke's audience sustain a gospel-centered critique against the devaluation of Black life. ############## Marcus Jerkins earned his PhD in Religion from Baylor University. He also holds a BA from Emory as well as a MDiv and ThM from Candler. He serves as pastor to Resurrection Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD and adjuncts at Northern Seminary. We sit in on one of his songwriting sessions, and he shows us some of the trophies he's won since moving to LA in 2009. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Harmony started playing the drums in the church his family attended in south London when he was three years old. Despite growing up in a family that loved music (his father is a seasoned percussionist with an enormous, diverse record collection), having music as a profession was frowned upon. “My parents hated the idea,” he says. He ended up leaving the family home to pursue his dream of becoming a music producer, moving to Tottenham where he set up his first studio. Recorded in London and at Harmony's studios in Los Angeles, A Career in Music is the story of Nigerian immigrants coming to Britain and working extremely hard to give their children opportunities they didn't have, only for those children to take those opportunities in a completely different direction to that which their parents intended.
