From one essay to the next, Jerkins weaves the personal with the public and political in compelling, challenging ways... With this collection, she shows us that she is unforgettably here, a writer to be reckoned with.” — Roxanne Gay “[A] forthright and informative account. . . . Jerkins's careful research and revelatory conversations with historians, activists, and genealogists result in a disturbing yet ultimately empowering chronicle of the African-American experience. Readers will be moved by this brave and inquisitive book.” — Publishers Weekly on Wandering in Strange Lands “Morgan Jerkins' fantastic, expansive novel of mothers and daughters and Harlem, Caul Baby, is a meditation on the limits of inheritance and legacy. He explains his decision to postpone medical school for a year and get a master's degree in Education, and how teaching is still part of his passion and career. Michael then provides an overview of Panacea Financial: its physician focus, what's unique about it compared with other banks, its relationship with Primis Bank, and a few statistics to illustrate Panacea's recent growth. He covers which of their offerings are most popular with physicians and which are growing. B. Cox and Domo review Brandy's classic sophomore album Never Say Never as it turns 25. After her smash eponymous debut album helped make her a household name among R&B fans, Brandy began to diversify her portfolio as an entertainer, starring her own sitcom Moesha, the Cinderella remake and I (Still) Know What You Did Last Summer. In late 1997, she began recording her second album now linked with an upcoming producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. Jerkins along with his production and writing team of his brother Fred, Harvey Mason, Jr, Lashawn Daniels as well other writers and producers David Foster, Marc Nelson and Diane Warren among others, set to craft a new sound for the maturing Brandy.Jerkins and his versatile production style proved to be a match for Brandy and her now mature and powerful voice and his production and writing team helped build an album that reflected Brandy's life, struggles and innermost thoughts. He also encouraged her to co-write a few of the songs, which made the project that much more candid and well rounded. The final product was something far beyond what fans or critics could dream of.The album featured up to seven singles, most notably two #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits "The Boy Is Mine: featuring fellow R&B singer Monica and "Have You Ever?" and the top 20 hits "Angel In Disguise" and "Almost Doesn't Count". The album has been certified 4x platinum and has sold 16 million copies worldwide. It is Brandy's best-selling album to date and is recognized as her best and most influential work.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Brandy's 'Never Say Never' Turns 25 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/brandy-never-say-never-album-anniversaryVibe: Alex Vaughn Remakes "Almost Doesn't Count" for 'Never Say Never' 25th Anniversaryhttps://www.vibe.com/music/music-news/alex-vaughn-pays-tribute-to-brandy-never-say-never-1234764027/BET: Brandy's "Never Say Never" Was A Semi-Confessional Executed To Perfectionhttps://www.bet.com/article/y4e2n0/brandy-never-say-never-retrospective-25th-anniversaryThe Urban Journal: Essential Albums: Brandy's "Never Say Never" At 25https://urbjournal.com/brandy-never-say-never/OkayPlayer: Brandy Talks 20 Years of "Never Say Never"https://www.okayplayer.com/originals/brandy-interview-never-say-never-20-years-later-okayplayer.htmlSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode, Zen chats with Rev. Dr. Marcus Jerkins about his book, Black Lives Matter to Jesus: The Salvation of Black Life and All Life in Luke and Acts. The book explores the significance of Black characters in the theological story of salvation told throughout Luke and Acts. Here's the books blurb: ############## The third evangelist makes Black-skinned people central to his claim in Luke and Acts that the gospel of Jesus is restoring the children of God. Within Luke's literary environment, the identity of the children of God was linked to national/ethnic identity. Many Jewish texts argued for the Jews' position as God's children because they are bound to God by covenant; they are God's firstborn. But there is also a more general sense within this tradition that all human beings are made in the image of God and are, thus, the children of God through Adam. In the Gospel, Luke asserts that all nations and all ethnicities, including Israel, have questionable filial status vis-à-vis God. Both Israel and the nations are restored in status as God's children through Jesus, the Son of God. In Acts, Luke explores the initial return of Israel and all ethnicities to God through the witness of the church empowered by the Spirit. To epitomize the return of all nations to God, Luke narrates the salvation of Black-skinned Africans. These Black lives are emphasized to signify that their representation in the church demonstrates the universal extent to which the salvation of Jesus Christ will reach. Their presence in the church is also meant to dignify their Black skin against an aesthetic bias that was prevalent in Greco-Roman views at that moment. This subversion of ethnographic bias helped Luke's audience sustain a gospel-centered critique against the devaluation of Black life. ############## Marcus Jerkins earned his PhD in Religion from Baylor University. He also holds a BA from Emory as well as a MDiv and ThM from Candler. He serves as pastor to Resurrection Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD and adjuncts at Northern Seminary. He and Courtney, his wife of 14 years, have three beautiful children. Here's the full quote and video from Megyn Kelly about Jesus being white. "Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't mean it has to change...Jesus was a white man, too. It's like we have, he's a historical figure that's a verifiable fact, as is Santa, I just want kids to know that. How do you revise it in the middle of the legacy in the story and change Santa from white to black?"
On her debut project, The Hurtbook the R&B singer/songwriter opens up with the Jerkins-produced “So Be It.” Over a hauntingly beautiful production, Vaughn's voice shines as she tries to make peace with the situation. This is no break-up anthem; instead, it's a vulnerable and honest look at the hurt that comes with moving on. Alex Vaughn is an uncut diamond in R&B music. Alex Vaughn's voice infiltrates secret places in a listener's heart, creating an intimately emotional experience. ‘So Be It' contains words of unprecedented cinematic poetry and illuminates the pure essence of walking in your peace. “Instead of lettin' me know, you kept secrets/But if I cut you this deep, you'd be in pieces”, she sings. Psychologically, when Alex creates music, she's connects with the highest components of her God-given creativity. She turns over every emotional and soulful stone in her garden of poetic Eden. Alex Vaughn understands the power of speaking her truth while making excruciating decisions for her betterment. Possessing the absolute power of letting go is an expensive lesson very few people in life can afford. Theoretically, it's cheaper to remain the same than evolve into the butterfly version of yourself.

London-born Harmony Samuels wrote and produced six songs on Ariana Grande's platinum-selling debut album Yours Truly, including her first hit single, The Way. Alongside Ariana, the list of artists he has worked with includes such stellar names as Janet Jackson, Destiny's Child, Brandy and former American Idolwinners Jordin Sparks and Fantasia. In this programme, Harmony tells how his career began in a modest home in Tottenham in London and broke out to the big time, in Los Angeles. He shows us his studios in Los Angeles. We sit in on one of his songwriting sessions, and he shows us some of the trophies he's won since moving to LA in 2009. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Harmony started playing the drums in the church his family attended in south London when he was three years old. Despite growing up in a family that loved music (his father is a seasoned percussionist with an enormous, diverse record collection), having music as a profession was frowned upon. “My parents hated the idea,” he says. He ended up leaving the family home to pursue his dream of becoming a music producer, moving to Tottenham where he set up his first studio. Recorded in London and at Harmony's studios in Los Angeles, A Career in Music is the story of Nigerian immigrants coming to Britain and working extremely hard to give their children opportunities they didn't have, only for those children to take those opportunities in a completely different direction to that which their parents intended. Contributors include Harmony's parents Matthew and Esther Samuels, singer-songwriter Nathan Sykes (formerly of The Wanted), legendary record producer Rodney ‘Darkchild' Jerkins, saxophonist YolanDa Brown and MOBO-winning rapper Chip (formerly Chipmunk). Produced by George Luke. A Cast Iron Radio production for BBC Radio 4

Jimmy Jenkins, also known as Jimmy Luvs or “JLuvs”, had previously been the Vice President of Uptown Records alongside Andre' Harrell. B. Cox and Domo review Brandy's 2002 classic third album album Full Moon. After two wildly successful albums and taking a break after her second album which was followed by a nervous breakdown, a relationship breakup and before what was soon to be the birth of her daughter, the vocal prodigy was ready to get back in the saddle. Teaming back up with Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins yet again after their collaboration with her sophomore album Never Say Never, Brandy explored all of the themes that emerged in the shadow of that success; love, romance, heartbreak, trust and misfortune. The album featured a blend of ballad and slow tempo songs and upbeat and catchy songs. With Darkchild's intuitive production, which fit her like a glove, and her exploration in amazing vocal arrangements and stacking, she emerged from this album with another platinum certification and a new nickname: "The Vocal Bible. The album has since been credited as a work that influenced many of her contemporaries and her successors as a watershed album for R&B in the new millenium.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comLearn More About the "Podcast GPS" BootCamp Course!www.vaultclassicpod.com/podcastgpsSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Brandy's 'Full Moon Turns 20 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/brandy-full-moon-turns-20-anniversary-retrospectiveRated R&B: Brandy's Groundbreaking Album 'Full Moon' Turns 20: A Retrospectivehttps://ratedrnb.com/2022/03/brandy-full-moon-album-in-retrospect/Music Xclusives: Brandy's 'Full Moon': Twenty Years Laterhttps://musicxclusives.com/index.php/2022/03/05/brandy-full-moon-twenty-years-later/The Odyssey: How Brandy's 'Full Moon' Made Me Fall In Love With Musichttps://www.theodysseyonline.com/brandy-full-moonSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
