For a lot of us, professional footballer is the dream career. Would you agree? But say the contract is for £40K a year and a footballing career typically ends when you're in your 30s. You'll have to find another career sharpish. The decision to go pro is perhaps more complicated when you're just going to get a 'decent' wage - and maybe high-level part-time football (often pretty good money) is the better option. In that context, it was fascinating to speak to with Gloucester City midfielder Joe Hanks. The pain is still there after the club's PO final loss. But optimism is growing.I found Joe particularly interesting though on life as a policeman and part-time footballer and that tricky dance for some on the edge of pro football. To go pro or not to go pro? That is one question. ************For more in-depth feature interviews like this please visit and subscribe to the Sport and Life website: https://sportandlife.co.uk*************Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast. For a 10% discount with GHS Cheltenham Clinics' Health Checks - https://ghsclinics.health, contact me: teddy@drapermedia.co.uk

Barcelona clinch La Liga against Real Madrid as The NN Pod looks at the growing instability inside Madrid, the pressure surrounding Xabi Alonso, and why Europe's biggest clubs increasingly resemble vanity projects rather than coherent football teams. The lads discuss Real Madrid's dressing room issues, Jude Bellingham scrutiny, Vinícius Júnior tensions, and the possibility of José Mourinho returning to the Bernabéu. There's also praise for Hansi Flick's Barcelona, the emergence of Lamine Yamal, and discussion around whether finishing second in a “two-team league” can ever be viewed as success.Elsewhere, Sergio Ramos edges closer to buying Sevilla, prompting debate around ex-players owning football clubs, modern ownership structures, and whether football intelligence translates into boardroom leadership. The conversation then shifts into a wider look at European football's competitive imbalance. PSG, Bayern Munich and Inter dominate their domestic leagues again, leading into a broader discussion around Premier League financial power, TV distribution, squad rotation advantages, and why English clubs continue overpowering Europa League and Conference League opposition. There's also debate around player awards after Ousmane Dembélé's Ligue 1 recognition and Bruno Fernandes winning Player of the Year despite Manchester United's struggles.Later in the episode, Chelsea's latest managerial search takes centre stage as Xabi Alonso becomes linked with Stamford Bridge following his difficult spell at Real Madrid. The lads discuss whether Chelsea remains a career opportunity or simply a high-paying trap for elite coaches. Finally, Southampton are caught in a bizarre Championship “Spygate” controversy after allegedly sending a staff member to watch Middlesbrough training hidden in the bushes ahead of the play-offs.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:18) - Week in Football Introduction & European Football Overview(01:00) - WATG: Matchweek 36 Roundup(02:21) - Barcelona Clinch La Liga & Real Madrid Turmoil(05:08) - Fede Valverde, Mourinho & Madrid Dressing Room Debate(08:00) - Galácticos Discussion & Real Madrid Team Structure(08:53) - Barcelona Praise, Hansi Flick & Lamine Yamal Discussion(10:17) - Sergio Ramos Buying Sevilla(14:44) - Dembele Award Debate & European League Dominance(16:57) - Premier League Financial Strength vs Europe(21:15) - Europa League, Conference League & English Dominance(24:48) - PSG Advantage, Squad Rotation & Competitive Balance(28:36) - Bruno Fernandes Award Debate & Footballer of the Year Discussion(32:27) - Chelsea Managerial Chaos & Xabi Alonso Links(36:18) - Alonso, Gerrard & The Risks of Reputation Damage(39:11) - Southampton Spygate & Championship Play-Off Discussion(42:24) - Outro
Welcome back to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. In this week's episode, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper tell the remarkable story of Bert Trautmann — the former Nazi paratrooper who became Manchester City's beloved goalkeeper and an unlikely symbol of Anglo-German reconciliation. 70 years on from the legendary 1956 FA Cup final, Wilson and Draper trace Trautmann's extraordinary journey: from Hitler Youth member and fighting on the Eastern Front, to prisoner of war in England, to the man who played on with a broken neck at Wembley. They examine his teenage indoctrination, the atrocity he witnessed, that shattered his faith in Nazism and the 25,000 protesters at Maine Road. Along the way, they explore the brutal treatment of goalkeepers in this era and how three successive cup final incidents began to change the game's laws. Finally, they reflect on how a flawed, charismatic man became the perfect bridge between two nations.00:00 Jimmy Ashcroft and the Goalkeeper's Lot06:30 Hitler Youth — Trautmann's Indoctrination12:45 The Eastern Front19:20 Witnessing the SS Massacre25:00 Captured Three Times — Soviets, Americans, and a Cup of Tea27:10 Prisoner of War and the Accidental Goalkeeper34:50 Staying in England 42:15 25,000 Protesters48:00 Winning Over Manchester53:40 The 1956 FA Cup Final — Playing On with a Broken Neck58:10 The Dangerous Life of the Goalkeeper01:03:20 Footballer of the Year and Personal Tragedy01:09:00 Burma, Women's Football, and an OBE01:14:30 The Perfect Symbol of Reconciliation Hosted on Acast. Under new rules brought in by Fifa, footballers who cover their mouths during verbal confrontations will be sent off at this year's World Cup. It's hoped that these measures will help prevent abusive behaviour. Some critics of the rule say that footballers speaking with their shirts raised or hands covering their mouths is a habit they've adopted to protect their privacy when they're surrounded by cameras. But the behaviour became a high profile issue in February after an incident where Benefica's Gianluca Prestianni raised his shirt while speaking to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. Prestianni was later banned for six matches for homophobic conduct after an investigation into what he said. BBC Sport reporter Sam Harris tells us how this new rule might work in practice. From overpriced City signings to entitled Real Madrid lifers to players who've wasted every opportunity handed to them, nothing is off limits. They also find time to celebrate a few underrated favorites, bid farewell to Mo Salah, and make the case for some players you might not be watching closely enough.
