We got you covered! We also taste and review a Ruby Port and a Tawny Port, both reasonably priced, to help you decide which one you should bring to your Holiday shindig. If you think you are not a fan of dessert wines, we believe we can change your mind - because we changed our own minds in this episode! Dessert wines are perfect for romantic evenings, but also a great excuse to slow down and extend a meal with family, friends, and loved ones. If you are looking for something special to do this Valentine's Day, serving a sweet wine to your sweetheart to complement the sweets you bought them is a perfect end to a wonderful evening. And who knows, maybe the evening might last a little longer after you serve them a dessert wine if you know what we mean! In this episode we taste and review three different dessert wines, and we think there is a great choice for you no matter what you are planning to serve or what your particular taste preferences may be. We found a great Port, a fascinating Cream Sherry, and a beautiful sweet orange wine - and any of them are great choices and crowd pleasers. If there is one thing we know, life is short, so don't skip dessert (along with not drinking shitty wine!). I've been at it for YEARS and I still can't seem to get this one thing right as a Mom (amongst a whole host of other things, no doubt!). From Andalucía in Spain's southwest, sherry is one of the most well-known fortified wines. Within the region, we find Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Puerto de Santa Maria — together they form “The Sherry Triangle.” The wine region has a very unique terroir where land, environment, winemaking style come together to craft the many styles of sherry we get to explore in the glass! This is Spain Uncorked, a Special Miniseries from Wine Pod. César Saldaña is a native to the region. In his professional career, he has focused almost exclusively on international wine trade and commerce. For over fifteen years, he held various top management positions at González Byass and Sandeman wineries, overseeing both the Sherry Wine and Port Wine divisions. He is also an active member Spain's Food & Wine advisory group.

Used to celebrate the drafting of the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, Madeira wines are the ultimate in American wines, though not made in America. Originating from shipping goods from Europe to America and being born from wines traveling that route, it became the most prominent wine in the US pre-prohibition. History, culture, and the wines' versatility benefited their relaunch in the 1990s by Bartholomew Broadbent, Owner of Broadbent Selections, which imports an array of wines from emerging regions and has its own line of Madeiras, Ports, and other wines. Learn more about the history and the journey of reintroducing a long-lost style of wine back to America in this episode of XChateau. On this episode I explore the changing face of Australia's most iconic winery, Penfolds Wines.Penfolds Wines has today – Thursday October 18th, 2018 – officially launched The Penfolds Collection, its family of top wines led as always by Grange. It's been a massive few months for Penfolds, which in July announced the somewhat surprising plans to begin making wine offshore, being Penfolds-branded champagne in France and also wines in California's Napa Valley region. The other big announcement on the same day was the launch of Penfolds Special Bottlings, a new series of limited edition, unique products inspired by the pioneering nature of founders Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. Now the first two releases are not table wine, or even wine – at least as you or I know it. They are Lot 1990 - a single batch brandy that was distilled and put into barrels in 1990, and Lot 518 – a Shiraz-based wine fortified with the Chinese spirit baiju. These special bottlings have ushered into the limelight veteran fortified winemaker at Penfolds, James Godfrey, who I spoke with in the Barossa Valley earlier this year. It's a fascinating chat about fortifieds, which accounted for the vast majority of wine produced in Australia up until the 1960s. While they may be somewhat out of fashion, they remain among the greatest wines produced in Australia today. But first, we're talking table wine, and not just any table wine. That's a very common and offhand way to refer to The Penfolds Collection – 21 extremely high quality wines that start at $40 and range up to the 2014 Grange, which is now an incredible $900 on release.Penfolds held a pre-release tasting of these wines in late August, which I attended along with wine writer Jeni Port, who has been tasting and critiquing Penfolds Wines for many years.I caught up with Jeni for a chat about The Penfolds Collection 2018 this week. All other Drinks Adventures episodes, show notes, transcripts and many helpful links are available on the podcast website, DrinksAdventures.com.au, and you can email me at hello@drinksadventures.com.au.Follow James Atkinson on Facebook here, Instagram here and Twitter here.Theme music ‘Sandbox’ by Cameo Culture.
