Coon – to date, the science fiction media franchise has generated 13 television series and 13 theatrical releases, totaling 800 to 837 hours of content. Thus, it would take roughly 35 days of continuous viewing to watch every single episode and movie in the franchise.For those unfamiliar, with a focus on space exploration, diplomacy, and humanity's future among the stars, Star Trek uses science fiction allegory to address real-world social, political, and cultural issues since its television debut on Thursday, September 08, 1966. Most notably, Star Trek series storylines have covered multiracialism, racism, civil rights, artificial intelligence, the Cold War, war and peace, nuclear anxiety, geopolitical standoffs, gender identity, LGBTQ+ representation, terrorism, nationalism, post-scarcity, post-capitalistism, refugees, migrancy, artificial intelligence rights, and ethno-nationalism. And while Star Trek fits squarely in the science fiction genre, the franchise has strong elements of action, adventure, comedy, drama, mystery, soap opera, and western. Moreover, the predominately live-action franchise has created some installments through the animation, musical theater, and even puppetry mediums. Dan has been involved in many aspects of the entertainment industry with a focus on the 'sci-fi' and fantasy genres. He is a recognized expert on fan relations and the world of fandom. In 1979, at 18 years old, he founded The Official Star Trek Fan Club with Paramount Pictures and friend, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. He oversaw all aspects of his fan club, including the publishing and merchandising, business development, contract negotiations, and marketing.  Over the course of the next twenty years, Madsen's company handled several other fan clubs, official magazines and merchandising empires. In 1987, George Lucas asked him to take over the Official Star Wars Fan Club for Lucasfilm and all its entities of which Madsen ran for almost 20 years before selling his company to Hasbro subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast. Gene Roddenberry's name is synonymous with Star Trek, but he relied on a team to bring his vision to life. Most of his writers were men with one exception, the trailblazing Dorothy Fontana. Professionally, she went by D.C. Fontana to counter the belief that women couldn't write genres like war, Westerns or sci-fi. Fontana became story editor and wrote some of the most beloved episodes of The Original Series, became the de facto showrunner on The Animated Series, and helped launch The Next Generation. She excelled at building character relationships and alien species – especially Vulcans – and worked closely with Leonard Nimoy to develop Spock. I talk with writers and podcasters Jarrah Hodge, Ian Spelling, Brian Drew and Laurie Ulster about how Fontana quietly shaped a franchise and influenced generations of fans through Star Trek's 60th anniversary.
