Glenn Poulos is a successful founder, who exited from his company in 2022. But that was his second exit. His first, 15 years before, was a very different story. He thought he had achieved the entrepreneur's dream, an eight-figure exit, after selling his business to a public company. With the shares he got in return he was going to be a multi-millionaire. Instead, he was left with hardly anything, and no job, after having to fire a hundred people. What happened? --------------------------- If you have any feedback, we'd love to hear it. Glenn Poulos is the author of “Never Sit in the Lobby: 57 Winning Sales Factors to Grow a Business and Build a Career Selling.” Glenn shares his experience and successful strategies in the profession of sales. Glenn emphasizes the importance of face-to-face interactions with customers and building relationships. He believes that technology may enhance certain aspects of sales but does not replace fundamental principles like active listening and behaving appropriately with customers. Glenn also discusses common mistakes made in sales, such as relying too heavily on virtual sales models post-pandemic, instead of engaging directly with clients. He provides insights into understanding a customer's position in their decision-making process and stresses the significance of personal visits to establish rapport.     Key Takeaways [03:10] Glenn said that certain aspects of sales have remained consistent over time, such as the importance of building relationships with customers. [06:40] He emphasizes the importance of fundamental principles in sales, such as getting in front of customers, acting professionally, staying engaged, and providing a positive customer experience. These principles have remained relevant and effective over time, as evidenced by their application in the author's own company.  [08:19] Glenn also discusses one of the biggest mistakes in sales and negotiation is over-reliance on virtual platforms, neglecting the value of in-person interactions and building relationships with customers. Focusing on the client's needs and improving their lives should be a priority. [18:34] He shares that when storytelling in a sales setting, it is important to start with a "punch" to capture the audience's attention and create a break in their psyche. This can be achieved through various techniques such as playing a video, making a sound, or using other attention-grabbing methods.  [23:37] He told us the importance of working hard and investing time and effort into honing their skills. Sales can be highly rewarding when approached with dedication and commitment as attraction plays a significant role in sales, and behaving in an attractive manner is essential for building connections with customers.  [29:29] He said that organizations often face challenges in effectively selecting prospects and determining the best approach to engage them at the top of the sales funnel and there is a need to differentiate between marketing and selling, with the focus being on salespeople actively engaging with customers rather than getting involved in the marketing aspects of prospect selection and approach. [32:57] In smaller organizations, where there isn't a clear separation between marketing and sales roles, Glenn directly stated that individuals must allocate their time effectively between prospecting, engaging with customers, and following up.  [40:07] He discusses that sales management requires a different skill set, and it is important to have managers who understand the tools and strategies of the trade, even if they may not be the strongest in customer-facing roles.  [48:42] He emphasizes that non-sales leaders need to understand and support the salesperson's role as the vital link in the company's success. Salespeople are like performers on a stage, and their unique personalities and capabilities require support and recognition. [51:34] Closing quote: Remember, ”Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesperson, not the attitude of the prospect.” – W. Clement Stone   Quotable Quotes “The biggest and most important deals I find are done face to face with the customer and toe toe with the competition.”   “One of the other rules of the 57 is always have something in your hand and something in your mind.”   “The tighter time you give these customers, the more likely they are to look at your product in a timely manner.”   “Sales is kind of like when you work hard, it's one of the easiest ways to make a lot of money.”   “You need to be figuring out ways to demonstrate yourself and your product in its best possible light without being braggadocious or sort of arrogant in any way.”   “If you're waiting for the leads to just fall in your lap or people's phones to ring, that's not going to work.”   “You only get forever to make another impression.”   ”Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesperson, not the attitude of the prospect.” – W. Our show provides practical and real advice for entrepreneurs and people working in startups or tech companies. Jarrod spent more than a decade building a business from the ground up while pioneering an entirely new industry. The lessons he learned, people he met, and actions he took proved invaluable and now we want to share these stories with an audience. Starting a business can be a little bit like running a barbecue restaurant. Customers come in, order food, and appreciate the simplicity of it all. The customer's transaction was quick and easy, but the preparation for that moment was immense. We understand that anything worth having takes a ton of time and work. We love working hard, watching the tech industry, and eating great food, and our show is a platform for these interests to collide.

In this episode, David is joined by Glenn Poulos, who's the founder and VP of Gap Wireless Inc. He's taken his decades of business management and sales experience and written Never Sit in the Lobby. A book that equips new and seasoned salespeople with the ability to succeed fast.   During the podcast, he explains how to make the best first impression, why you need to spend 80% of your time with the customer, rapport building, and how to harness your greed and passion to become a more effective salesperson. As well as why you cannot make sales if you are not providing what the customer really needs. He also shares his Punch Perfect Pitch technique, which includes the power of three and how to make the transition from sales to managing a team or business.   KEY TAKEAWAYS     Standing while waiting for someone in a lobby ensures you are not distracted when the person you meet approaches you and you can make good eye contact. Getting good at remembering faces makes it a lot easier to build rapport. Face-to-face meetings are still more effective than video sales calls. Being passionate about what you are selling is key to success. Learning when to stop chasing a particular sale enables you to focus on something more productive. Always be a pleasure to be around. Don´t overuse implied familiarity. Learn to mute yourself and use your ears twice as much as your mouth. People don´t remember you for selling them the product. They do remember you if you solve problems for them. Good after-sales is vital. As a leader you have two responsibilities – be a leader and make decisions. Regardless of what you are doing, you are always making an impression. Make sure it is a good one.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Show up with something in your hand and something in your mind,' ‘If you can spend the majority of your time in front of customers, you'll actually be the happiest.' ‘When you've done your job, the customer closes themselves.' ‘Take very long to hire and be super-fast to fire,'   EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://glennpoulos.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/glenn.poulos Twitter - https://twitter.com/GlennPoulos LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/glenn-poulos-45bab86/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/glenn.poulos/ Book Never Sit in the Lobby by Glen Poulos - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Never-Sit-Lobby-Winning-Business/dp/B09RQ9GKXH/   ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by author, speak, and co-founder of Gap Wireless, Glenn Poulos, to discuss five ways to know your customer's ecosystem. This conversation is based partially on Glenn's recently published book, Never Sit in the Lobby, available now on Amazon. Understand your key stakeholders. Some salespeople sell simple things, and some people sell multi-million dollar systems. Whatever the product is, know what you're talking about. And, more importantly, learn how to explain it to others. Too often, salespeople are very technically proficient at explaining their solutions. However, this is potentially too descriptive for the prospect to understand your solution's clear benefits.  Recognize who you need to speak to, identify their level of understanding, and adjust your speech to accommodate the stakeholder. Isolate the prospects Who are the people that will use and derive benefit from your solution? Those are the people you need to demonstrate to. Showing the benefits to the implementer drives them to further the deal beyond what might happen when speaking exclusively to management. Punch, perfect pitch, and close: You might be presenting for a specific purpose, whether technical, financial or otherwise. Whatever it is, make it a good presentation. The ‘punch' is an attention-grabbing opening that captures the audiences' attention and encourages them to pay attention to the rest of the presentation. People get lost in details. When presenting a pitch, know which elements are essential to the prospect and which are not impactful to their bottom line. The close should come naturally if you've completed the punch and the perfect pitch. If it isn't, you're likely selling too early in the conversation.
