Ever considered working for a purpose-driven organization? Adam Fraser, Chief Executive of Laureus Sport for Good joins host Brian Clapp on the Work In Sports podcast.Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast…If I say the New York Yankees - you know who that is right? Of course you do…Big Ten Network -- you know them, familiar with their work recognizable brand…Adidas, Under Armour, Puma - sureUS Soccer Federation -- of course.  Have you heard of Laureus? Likely not. And yet, Laureus has made a larger impact on the world through sport, than any of the aforementioned brands we are all so familiar with.Sports is a simple industry. Athletes and events - everything in sports branches off these two pillars. Ticket sales, trainers, coaches, scouts, operations, travel, equipment, apparel -- it all branches off of athletes and/or events.   Laureus is a little different. They use sports as a means to change the world. You hear that phrase “change the world” and it sounds like an ad campaign from a brand trying to make you think, they are more altruistic than they are. They are trying to sell you a message rather than an action.Laureus lives that action. Change the World isn't a banner ad for them, it's a repeatable mission statement, put into action by their everyday. Founded under the Patronage of Nelson Mandela, Laureus Sport for Good uses sport as a powerful and cost-effective tool to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination, and disadvantage in their lives. Over the past two decades, they have developed a worldwide charitable infrastructure to use the power of sports to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage. It was Nelson Mandela who said, “Sports has the power to change the world.”And while most of us hear those words and agree, but do nothing about it. Laureus is actively working to make it happen. It is my honor to introduce you to this purpose-driven sports organization, who is changing the world through sport. Here is Laureus Sport for Good Chief Executive, Adam Fraser.Questions for Adam Fraser, Laureus Sport for Good Chief Executive1: There is so much I want to talk about in regard to Laureus and all the organization does to improve the lives of people through sports – but I want to dig a little into your background and personal story first. You've gone on quite the journey in your career – the first 5 years of your career after graduating from the University of Leeds, was in journalism. What led you to sports and why was working as a journalist your first career choice?2: It's quite the transition going from reporting on the World Cup and Formula One to the foundation/advocacy/fundraising side of the industry. Where were you and what was happening that led you to this dramatic shift not only in career but overall purpose?3: You became the executive director for Sports Industry Group and Communication Director for Benchmark – their tagline is “creating and investing in purpose-driven businesses” so this was your transition move in a way, starting you down this path of sport for good. What was that initial feeling like being involved with a company with a different set of goals than others you had worked for prior?4: Going from journalism to the Public Relations/Communication Director side seems like a pretty natural transition, what were the biggest challenges transitioning to this role?5: After Benchmark you transitioned to your current organization – Laureus Sport for Good. I want to dig into your roles within the organization, but first, let's look through a broader lens.Nelson Mandela, famously said “sport has the power to change the world” – I've read this quote a thousand times. I had never listened to him actually say it until yesterday, and it gave me a whole different feeling. What does it mean for someone in your position, as Chief Executive of this organization,

Guests : https://www.beautifulnews.co.za/stories/joanie-fredericks Women have the right to choose their life’s direction. But many are denied the opportunity to pursue their ambitions. Joanie Fredericks was one of them. Growing up, her brother’s needs took priority. She gained her ticket to freedom the day she passed her driving test. . Now she’s ensuring more women are in the driver’s seat. Fredericks is an influential member of the Mitchells Plain community. In 2015, she founded NEAD Community Development. The organisation helps people become self-sufficient by providing opportunities for progress. Driving is her latest vehicle for upliftment. Last year, she formed Ladies Own Transport Services, offering driving lessons and mobility to residents in her area. From the passenger seat, Fredericks directs the way forward. Her students are able to tackle their fears and gain confidence – not just on the roads. Thanks to her, more women are on the fast track to controlling their futures. https://www.beautifulnews.co.za/stories/athrah-lakay Behind the boasts of drums, rows of straight-faced schoolchildren stand tall. This marching squad is in formation and they mean business. For Athrah Lakay, it’s a place of comfort beneath the tough veneer. In the face of uncertainty, the routine of the drill helps the 15-year-old pupil gain confidence in her next step. Marching bands are well-loved within schools in the Mitchells Plain community. It’s a celebrated tradition in the Cape Flats, commemorated in the annual Kaapse Klopse festival. At Spine Road High School, Lakay and her schoolmates assemble every week to practise. The military-like precision takes Lakay’s mind off her challenges. The unified movement has taught Lakay to put teamwork and discipline at the forefront of her actions. Lakay is only in Grade 9. But with the spirit of the squad drummed into her core, she has a bright future ahead. Coming from different backgrounds, her schoolmates can shake off life’s complexities and focus on being together when they’re at practice. https://www.beautifulnews.co.za/stories/vincent-da-silva The clay horse towers over its creator. A life-sized artwork, it embodies the natural prowess of the galloping animal. Vincent Da Silva’s sculptures are testament to his deft handiwork. Though frozen in time, the statues have a movement to them. Unlike the smooth marble figures of ancient Greece, Da Silva’s art is cast in bronze and flecked with blemishes from his tools. With his textural monuments, the artist reflects a freethinking philosophy. Throughout his time studying architecture, Da Silva sculpted, opening his first gallery before he completed his degree. When it came down to choosing between the two, there was no denying his affinity for sculpture. Today, Da Silva turns his attention to the formation of human identity through charcoal drawings and figure sculptures. https://www.beautifulnews.co.za/stories/michaylah-petersen Michaylah Petersen is never without her longboard. These wheels are her freedom. At the age of 15, Petersen was kicked out of home. Her family refused to accept that she was gay. For two days, Petersen lived on the streets. With nowhere to go, she ended up in a care home, severely depressed. It’s been a long journey to self-acceptance. In the course of getting her life on board, she’s enabling others to get back up. She first saw the impact of sport while coaching surfing at Waves for Change, a Laureus Sport for Good programme. Liberated by the adrenaline rush, Petersen realised she could take it further – with longboarding. Now, Petersen teaches girls in Lavender Hill how to carve, giving them the opportunity to move forward and express themselves. https://www.beautifulnews.co.za/stories/aneesah-seale Aneesah Seale greets daybreak with a swirl of chocolate sauce. She’s just opened the first coffee shop in Bonteheuwel, right from her own home. Her endeavour is notable in a neighbourhood where daily shootings leave people in fear of stepping out of their houses. . In the midst of terror and desolation, her café is a sweet refuge. From the tender age of nine, Seale has been acquainted with the warmth a kitchen can bring. Her father was a bakery manager and it was with his encouragement that her dreams began to rise. She’s been baking for more than two decades now. Last year, Seale launched a confectionery business from home. But the idea of seeing her neighbours find comfort over a strong roast kept brewing in her heart. Today, That Coffee Shop pours countless cups of care. Fresh flowers grace the tables in Seale’s shabby chic front yard, and every guest is welcomed in with a smile. Beyond its reputation, Bonteheuwel is now the home of extraordinary goodness.

In the year that Nelson Mandela would have turned 100, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and its South African Chairman, Morne du Plessis, walked its own road to Ellis Park to pay tribute to his memory. The hallowed turf upon which Madiba’s Magic united a nation, Ellis Park, played host to programmes from around the country who gathered, in many ways, to pay tribute to his legacy on Mandela Day. In this special edition, Jean Smyth hears from real-life South African heroes living among us who, through sport, are changing lives and granting hope to where before there was only despair.

When we heard that Adam Rolston and his caddie Ron Rutland were planning on raising money for the Laureus Sport for Good charity by playing the longest hole in golf history, one that literally spanned the length of Mongolia, we had to find out more! Well 82 days and about 20,000 shots later, the pair are just a lofted wedge and a putt away from completing their adventure. We’re on the final stretch with the pair as they exit the Gobi and enter the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar. Retirement Goals: Robbie Simpson might still be playing a professional football, but he’s got more than one eye on what comes next, and how he can help other athletes facing the same career crossroads. He has started Life After Professional Sport (LAPS) an organisation that brings businesses together with athletes who are close to, or have completed their sporting careers. Things are changing, when Robbie walked into the dressing room at his first professional club, Coventry City, 10 years ago he was the only one with a university degree. However in the squad at his current club Exeter City, he says there are 11 graduates and many more with a post playing plan. Summersaults in the Sky: Slalom racing is tough enough on skis, but imagine doing it in a plane! That's what those taking part in the Red Bull Air Race Championship do each week. Pilots nip through a series of 25-metre-high pylons around a track in the sky. Melanie Astles is the first, and only female pilot, and has been telling us about the challenges of acrobatic air racing and how she’s proving that for women pilots, the sky really is the limit.
