Your morning briefing, the business news you need in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast: (1) Billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new Department of Government Efficiency tasked to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” President-elect Donald Trump announced. (2) The expected appointment of officials with strong anti-China views to President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet was welcomed by hedge fund veteran Kyle Bass, even as it risks straining ties between the world's largest economies. (3) Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said he'll be looking at incoming inflation data to determine whether another interest-rate cut is appropriate at the US central bank's December meeting. It comes as traders are loading up on bets for further losses in the Treasury market in anticipation that Donald Trump's pledged policies will rekindle inflation and keep US interest rates high. (4) Germany's election campaign kicks into high gear on Wednesday, when Chancellor Olaf Scholz makes his case in a public address for another term, despite polls showing voters are overwhelmingly looking for a change. (5) The Bank of France expects the economy to stagnate in the fourth quarter after growth was boosted by the Paris Olympics in the previous three months and as the political situation continues to add to business uncertainty. (6) Apple, aiming to catch up with rivals in the smart home market, is nearing the launch of a new product category: a wall-mounted display that can control appliances, handle videoconferencing and use AI to navigate apps. In the early 2010s, reports began to emerge of deaths linked to a government department. Suicide notes, coroners' reports, and research by disabled activists pointed to failings within the Department for Work and Pensions – the DWP – the government body responsible for the disability benefits system. As years passed, and austerity tightened its grip, the death toll mounted, and an even more disturbing picture emerged: bureaucracy, politicians, and the private sector had combined over thirty years to reckless, deadly effect. For the last decade, disabled journalist John Pring has meticulously pieced together how the DWP ignored pleas to correct fatal flaws in the social security system and covered up its role in the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of disabled people. Having spent years researching the heartbreaking stories of twelve individuals who died, he describes how their bereaved families have fought for justice and accountability. In this month's episode, we speak to John about the idea of 'slow violence', how the pernicious myth of widespread benefit fraud was instrumentalised, and how a culture of cruelty and cover-up endured within the DWP over the course of successive governments. Content warning: Suicide, traumatic death and severe mental distress --- John Pring is founder and editor of the news agency Disability News Service. He is co-creator of the Deaths by Welfare timeline, and co-editor and specialist advisor on the award-winning Museum of Austerity project. He has written for mainstream publications including the Guardian, Observer, Daily Mirror and Private Eye, and was associate producer on the award-winning Dispatches documentary, The Truth About Disability Benefits. He is also the author of Longcare Survivors: The Biography of a Care Scandal.
While Jordan Peterson is a prime example of how the current bureaucracy has control over ordinary citizens in the country - he's not the only one. It seems that in all aspects of our life we have some unelected bureaucrat with a badge, clipboard, and a pen telling us what we can and can't do. Has this mountain of bureaucracy killed any lingering Canadian entrepreneurship and creativity? John Tory is the former Mayor of Toronto - he joins Stephen LeDrew to unpack this for Three Minutes. The Crazy Wisdom Podcast features a wide-ranging conversation with Simone Collins, a serial entrepreneur, investor, and co-host of the Based Camp podcast. Topics explored include the concept of 'based' in the context of the podcast, the crisis of belief in authority, the role of AI in governance and its potential to improve bureaucratic efficiencies. Simone shared her views on the impact of demographic collapse on cities and illustrated the potential future of 'techno-feudalism' where power and money concentrate within isolated, secure communities. The discussion also touched upon the role of cryptocurrencies as an alternative during hyperinflation scenarios, based on experience in countries like Argentina. The episode ends with a brief discussion about the potential ways to evade an 'Argentine future' for the US, predicated on curbing bureaucratic waste. Initially understood as someone comfortable with their beliefs, regardless of others' opinions, it has evolved to carry political connotations and baggage. The term now often implies a conservative leaning, especially when contrasted with progressive viewpoints. Cultural and Political Dynamics in New York City and San Francisco: Collins shared her experiences growing up in San Francisco and living in New York City, describing them as progressive environments where there's a prevalent culture of not tolerating differing opinions. She observed that progressive culture often equates being challenged or uncomfortable with personal attacks, impacting open dialogue. Diverse Dinner Parties and Political Dialogues: Collins and her husband host dinner parties in New York City, deliberately inviting a heterodox mix of people, including conservatives, progressives, and others with unconventional views. She noted that criticisms of these gatherings typically come from progressive attendees who feel uncomfortable with conservative perspectives. Personal Political Shifts: Stewart shared his journey of political and ideological transformation, particularly around the time of Donald Trump's election. This shift was a process of questioning and reassessing his long-held beliefs. Demographic Collapse and its Implications: Collins expressed concerns about demographic collapse, particularly in countries like South Korea and Japan. She discussed how this phenomenon might lead to a decline in smaller cities and towns, with a corresponding rise in mega-cities or gated communities. The Role of AI in Future Societies: The conversation touched on the potential impact of AI on governance and societal structures. Collins speculated about a future of 'techno-feudalism,' where AI-driven communities could emerge, leading to a patchwork of different societal models. Cryptocurrency in Economies Facing Hyperinflation: The host and Collins discussed the practical use of cryptocurrencies in countries like Argentina and Venezuela, where traditional currencies are highly unstable. This situation contrasts with the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies in more stable economies like the U.S. Government Bureaucracy and Potential AI Solutions: Collins suggested that AI could streamline government functions and reduce bureaucracy. However, she acknowledged the challenge of implementing such changes due to entrenched interests and the complexity of government structures. Potential for Change in U.S. Governance: The conversation ended on a note of cautious optimism about the possibility of reforming U.S. governance structures, particularly at the state level, despite recognizing the significant challenges ahead.

Post-pandemic America is weirded out. Mike Russell and Rob Hunter crack open a beer and explain their theory about many, many things just seem off. Things like politics, going out to eat, and general good will. Also, both Mike and Rob have run into government bureaucracies. It took the government a year to process Mike's suppressor applications. Rob is going to have to wait 8 months for his TSA renewal application to be processed and he might not be able to get a pool because of the city of Phoenix. Isn't the government supposed to work for us? The Brewmance also discusses Star Wars plot holes that are popping up. Will this impact the future of the franchise? Join us.

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii's newest research associate, Jensen Ahokovi, quoted founder Dick Rowland's quip, “The bigger government gets, the smaller you get,” in a recent commentary in Honolulu Civil Beat. Ahokovi wrote about Hawaii's stunningly large government bureaucracy and how too often it serves itself instead of the public. We are all consuming a lot of information not only about this virus (COVID-19) and evaluating the government's response, at all levels. So coming to the front of the class we are bringing some science based facts from microbiologist Coqui Negra and some facts about how our various levels of government and bureaucracy work in a crisis from New York City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal. Our Guests Coqui Negra has an undergraduate degree in clinical laboratory science and a PhD in microbiology and immunology. Her research centered on Gram negative pathogenesis and she did postdoctoral research in a vaccine development center. After a decade of educating clinical laboratory science students, she moved to a scientific society to work on clinical laboratory policy in Washington, DC. Helen Rosenthal represents the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the New York City Council and is Chair of the Committee on Women and Gender Equity. Over the past six years, Helen has passed legislation to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, trained NYPD in victim-centric and trauma-informed investigations of sexual assault, improved health outcomes for black women in pregnancy and childbirth, and addressed gender wage parity. In her first term, Helen chaired the Council’s Committee on Contracts, where she focused on increasing funding and expediting payment for social service contracts. She championed worker co-operatives and focused on procurement reform for the 21st century. She also co-chaired the Women’s Caucus. In both terms, Helen was selected to join the Council’s Budget Negotiating Team and has been a vocal supporter of tenants, labor, safe cycling, and pedestrians. Helen was elected to the New York City Council in 2013 with the highest vote total of any candidate for City Council in New York City, a feat she repeated in her 2017 re-election. In 2017, she was endorsed by the New York Times [“valorously supported a school desegregation plan for her district in the face of opposition from various interests],” the New York Daily News, and the Amsterdam News.

The government may have won over a few new young recruits to federal service. All it took was a 10-week paid internship at one of six federal agencies this summer. The Civic Digital Fellowship is an internship program designed to give college students a taste of public service. It's geared toward students or recent graduates with less experience than required for a President Innovation Fellowship or the US Digital Service. The 2019 cohort of civic digital fellows is the biggest one yet. As Federal News Network's Nicole Ogrysko reported on Federal Drive with Tom Temin, agencies may have reason to be optimistic they can attract young tech talent.

A Socialist, An Anarchist And A Realist Walk Into A PodcastThe Podcast Starts With A Premise: Power Manifests When People Willingly Obey Or Chose To Comply...The Anarchist Proposes That The State, With It's Parasitical Ecosystem Of Crony Capitalists, Media, Academia And Finance Have Doomed America. But Yet, Human's Seemingly Sacrifice Their Minds And Bodies To The State, Because, The State And All It's Agencies Are Our Saviors.Okay, The Socialist Doesn't Necessarily Agree With This. Sometimes, The Poor Need Help. They Need ObamaCare, But If We Just Stop All The Wars, And Stop Voting For Trump, Everything Will Be A-OK.What Ensues Is A Long Brutal Argument That Is Interrupted By The Realist, Who Tells Both The Socialist And The Anarchist They're Idiots... Political Hilarity, Follows.Major Themes/Topics: The Affordable Healthcare Act (cough, ObamaCare), Urban Elites Vs. Red State Hicks, Generational Controlling Wealth, Government Bureaucracy, Alt-Right Politics, Anti-War Movement, Donald Trump, The State/Anarchist/Philosophy, Liberal Arts Education, Divide And Conquer Politics…Intro Music: "Laconic Granny" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Find out more on the 3emptypints website.
Bula! So Anne Creaton is knee deep in Fiji. Knee deep in another culture. Knee deep in Government Bureaucracy. Knee deep in the most beautiful water in the world. What a woman! I worked with Anne a few years ago when she helped start up the Ambulance embedded aeromedical service called Adult Retrieval Victoria in Melbourne. That wasn’t hard enough for her. So she headed off to Fiji to try to bring some of what she had learned to the Pacific. Now I don’t know what you know about Fiji. It is an incredibly interesting place with an incredibly interesting mix of people.I know that I don’t know enough about the history of Fiji, the story of native Fijians and indo-fijians, “Indentured Labour” and the relatively recent political complexity/instability. I am willing to bet that out of the few of us that have visited Fiji 99% will have visited the 3 biggest islands or a resort island. There are 330 islands in Fiji and about 500 islets. It is the biggest and most developed of the remote independent pacific island nations. It has the biggest campus of the fascinating University of the South Pacific and a newer second University of Fiji. There also exists something called Pacific Time or Fiji Time. (“It’s Time, Jim, but not as we know it.”) Anne is humble about what she is trying to do but I am less reserved. I looked at doing something like Anne is doing about 15 years ago. I wasn’t brave enough. She was. Heres a few questions for you; What does the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM)do outside Australia and New Zealand? Should they do more? Have you ever heard of their Special Interest Group called IEMN? Have a listen and get in touch with Anne if you want to know more. @AnneCreaton Thanks again to @rollcagemedic for offering to do some #Jellybeans in #Chicago I am resetting the Jellybean numbers to fit with @sandnsurf and @precordialthump at www.LifeintheFastLane.com so this is called Jellybean 33. I'll rename the others later.
Are “creative” and “bureaucracy” mutually exclusive terms? Erma Ranieri is working hard to prove otherwise. As commissioner for public sector employment in South Australia, she is leading Change@SouthAustralia to speed change in government. For her efforts to make government bureaucracy creative and responsive to citizens she was named 2014 Telstra South Australia Business Woman of the Year.
Tiffany goes on several rants, including around government bureaucracy. Tiff and the Dirt get into it - the first fight of the season – over their differences in philosophies regarding flirting, retweeting, etc. Also, there are more rants about disrespecting and how we tend to forget how we got with the person in the first place.
