What Are Green Schools and Why They Matter

Better Learning Podcast

What is a Green School? When people hear “Green School,” they often picture solar panels, school gardens, or maybe a greenhouse out back. While those are pieces of the puzzle, the full picture is much more powerful. A Green School integrates sustainability into every aspect of the learning experience: from the design of its physical space to its curriculum, culture, and community impact. It's a school that not only teaches sustainability but lives it, showing students, educators, and families what a healthier, more equitable future can look like—and empowering them to lead the way. In our latest episode of the Better Learning Podcast, we dive into why Green Schools matter now more than ever. With nearly 100,000 public schools across the U.S., the stakes are high. School facilities don't just house students—they influence how well they learn, how healthy they are, and how connected their communities feel. We explore the current challenges in school infrastructure, including the startling reality that many buildings still lack basics like proper ventilation or air conditioning. These gaps disproportionately affect underserved communities and create barriers to learning and well-being. A Green School aims to change that. By reducing environmental impact, improving health and performance, and delivering sustainability education, these schools set the standard for how we treat each other and the planet. They become catalysts for change—transforming not just students, but entire communities.   Takeaways: Green Schools go beyond solar panels and gardens. They integrate sustainability into curriculum, culture, and community. Millions of students attend outdated schools every day — with nearly 100,000 public schools across the U.S. and over 7.5 billion square feet in need of modernization, the learning environment is failing to keep pace with student needs. School leaders play a critical role in long-term sustainability. Partnering with experts who prioritize healthy, future-ready design ensures that new school buildings serve students and communities for decades to come, not just on day one. Schools can take advantage of available tax credits and funding by prioritizing sustainable building practices.     About The Guest Panelists:   Jana Silsby, DLR Group LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jana-silsby-450b7a13/   Phoebe Beierle, U.S. Green Building Council: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phoebebeierle/   Sara Ross, UnDauntedK12: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarajross/       Connect with episode host, Carla Cummins: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-cummins-01449659/       The Energy, Carbon, and Sustainability in K-12 Education Symposium When: June 24th-25th Where: Washington DC Register & Learn More Here!         Episode 230 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture. They discuss the changes in tax laws regarding depreciation and how it affects property investors. They also touch on exceptions to the rule and the importance of inspections for maximising depreciation claims. Whether you're a renovator or a property investor, this episode provides valuable insights into the world of property depreciation and how recent tax law changes have affected the industry. Tune in to learn more about depreciation basics, exemptions, and the importance of understanding these concepts for your property ventures. “If you buy a property brand new and you sell it to me one day later, you could claim the depreciation, but the moment I buy it one day old, I can't claim the depreciation of the plant equipment items anymore, which is ridiculous because the tax law says that those items are going to last for 10 years. This, has not happened in any other industry. You can claim a two year old computer for your business. You can claim a five year old car if you're a tradie but for property investors, we got the short straw. And the most bizarre thing is with commercial property, the laws never changed.” - Tyrone Hyde EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: 00:00 - Introduction 00:50 - Background of the guest, Tyrone Hyde 02:50 The ins and outs of depreciation 04:30 Different rules for commercial property and residential property 08:00 Depreciation of new plant equipment installed by renovators 13:00 Importance of keeping receipts and documentation 14:00 Discussion on substantial renovation and guidelines 18:00 Differentiating between repair and capital improvements in renovation projects 19:50 Conversation on living in Bali and the Green School experience 21:40 Launch date for "10 with Ty" podcast (1st of July) Resources Washington Brown Website www.washingtonbrown.com.au The School Of Renovating https://www.theschoolofrenovating.com She Renovates Podcast https://www.theschoolofrenovating.com/podcasts-page/ Connect with The School of Renovating ASK BERNADETTE https://www.theschoolofrenovating.com/podcasts-page Subscribe to She Renovates Apple Podcast https://apple.co/3faoWlT Subscribe to Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheSchoolOfRenovating Follow on Twitter https://twitter.com/renovatingsc Follow on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/the_school_of_renovating

Anisa Heming, director for the Center for Green Schools, joins us for more on the future for sustainable schools in New Orleans.  March 8 marked the beginning of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where athletes representing 20 countries face off in a tournament of America's pastime. Many players opt not to play for the country in which they were raised, but rather, for a country with which they have historical ties.  This has led many Jewish American ballplayers to put on a yarmulke and play for Team Israel. And in 2017, this team of underdogs placed sixth, upsetting many of the top seeds. Jeremy Bleich, was a pitcher on that team. He's also a native of Metairie, Louisiana who played professionally for the Oakland As and now works as a coordinator of Major League pitching operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He joins us for more on his experience with Team Israel and what he hopes to see at this year's tournament.  But first, it's Friday and that means it's time to catch up on this week in politics with Stephanie Grace, columnist and editorial director for the The Times-Picayune | The Advocate.
