In this series on water, the one area that I've left out so far is the urban landscape. In this week's episode I got to chat with Jerry Yudelson, the author of 13 full-length professional and trade books on green buildings, integrated design, green homes, water conservation, building performance and sustainable development. Dubbed ‘The Godfather of Green' by Wired Magazine, Jerry's passion for optimizing the built environment is reflected by his many years of professional experience in the green building and certification fields, serving as an elected LEED Fellow and as president of the Green Building Initiative. He also served on the national board of the USGBC and chaired the Steering Committee for the largest green building show, Greenbuild, from 2004 through 2009.  Despite being best known for ecological building design and policy, in this interview we're going to focus on his book Dry Run, which unpacks some of the best ways to manage scarce water resources and handle upcoming urban water crises. The book explains the most pressing water issues that urban zones face, and examines the vital linkages between water, energy use, urban development and climate change. Dry Run also demonstrates best practices for achieving “net zero” water use in the built environment through, water conservation strategies for buildings, factories, cities and homes, rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse and water reclamation systems, water efficiency retrofits, onsite sewage treatment, and new water reuse and supply technologies. In this interview we specifically address the urgent changes that cities need to make to ensure longer term water security. Jerry explains his classifications of the colors of water that help to categorize the different sources and uses for water in cities that require different management systems, and gives a few case studies of municipalities that have started to make improvements in their aquatic infrastructure.

This week on the Hemp Podcast, we travel to Japan. Not literally, but vicariously. Our three guests recently attended the inaugural Tokyo International Hemp Conference last month and toured an 8th generation hemp farm and processing facility called Golden Hemp that makes sacred ropes used in Shinto temples. On this episode we will talk to Jean Lotus, Robin Destiche and Patrick Atagi. The trip was organized by the National Industrial Hemp Council of America and was funded by USDA's Regional Agricultural Promotion Program. Lotus, the publisher of Hemp Build Magazine, was fascinated to learn about the ancient traditions and processing methods that are still in use today, and thinks Japan will embrace hemp building practices. “I really see some opportunities there with hemp building materials just because of the decarbonization,” she said. “The Japanese have really embraced all of the United Nations sustainability goals for construction.” Robin Destiche, a co-founder of American hemp seed company KonopiUS, said he sees the potential for growth, but doesn't expect it overnight. “Like many things in the hemp industry,” he said, “I can see it maybe in three to five years, but it definitely feels like there's traction, there's development.” Patrick Atagi, the president and CEO of the National Industrial Hemp Council, organized the trip in conjunction with the Thailand Industrial Hemp Trade Association. “Our goal is to market and create a market for hemp domestically and globally,” he said. Show Highlights   Navigating global sustainability standards and challenges of working with different sustainability standards across countries. Importance of adapting to local codes and practices while maintaining global sustainability goals. Examples of projects in various countries, luxury retailers, and their unique challenges. The future of green building with a focus on carbon reduction and human health in building design. The need for generative design and inclusive leadership in the green building movement. Importance of addressing existing building stock and portfolio-driven solutions. John's collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to projects in his career. Exposure to sustainable materials and practices  Early adoption of sustainable practices and materials. REI flagship store in Seattle. Challenges and successes in certifying over 1600 Starbucks stores globally. Collaboration with USGBC and GBCI to develop and refine the LEED volume program. Impact of his work on colleagues and the broader green building community   “The other thing I think is thematic and necessary is that we can build a lot of really cool, perfect buildings and it takes a lot of effort and maybe they use very little water and no energy off the grid, but it doesn't account for the vast majority of the housing stock and the business stock and the office stock and the retail stock. The portfolio driven solutions are going to be another thing that is going to continue to drive the industry. It's like how do I take a massive machine and make it 20% better, because that 20% represents a whole heck of a lot of carbon and other negative impacts.” -John Harrison   “I think it's more about the ripple effect. The ripple effect of green building projects is pretty cool, and totally quantifiable. It's like basic math and something people understand, the ripple effect with people that you either influenced or helped along the way or they helped you along the way and what they've become and where they've gone.” -John Harrison     Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. Why is “70/50” the gold standard? Should it be? Who decided? Does every gallery really need to be 70 degrees, plus/minus two? Does every storage space really need to be 50% humidity, plus/minus five? Is that a reasonable goal for most museums? At what cost? What's the difference between “AA” climate control, and just “A”? How much energy could we all save, just by switching down one grade? Are artifact loan agreement climate requirements consistent, or is there room for improvement? Roger Chang (Principal, Buro Happold) joins host Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss “Rethinking Climate Control in Museums”. Kat Klingenberg, executive director and co-founder of the non-profit organization Phius, talks about the history and current state of passive building in this episode of The Future Built Smarter. “Passive building principles are not rocket science,” she says. “We're talking about continuous insulation, airtight construction, no thermal bridging in the envelope, good fenestration components, and minimized mechanical systems. It's all about holistic integrated design, and once that is all implemented correctly, we get the result of super-low energy buildings that are pretty much zero-energy ready.”     Kat also directs the technical and research programs at Phius, which certifies passive buildings and high-performance building products. The organization also has trained more than 5,000 architects, engineers, energy consultants, and builders as Phius Certified Consultants, Builders, and Raters/Verifiers.    Predated by the construction of thousands of passive houses in North America during the 1960s through 1980s and originally modeled off the Passive House Institute of Germany, Phius codified the passive house strategies in the U.S. when the organization was founded in 2003. The principles have evolved over the past two decades and today apply not only to homes but also to new construction and retrofits of all building types, with climate-specific standards for different geographic regions.     Passive building principles are a vital tool in the global decarbonization effort underway in the built environment—so much so that the 2024 USGBC International Greenbuild Conference will include a Phius-exclusive track, pre-conference summit, and pavilion of exhibitors.     “There has been collaboration and friendship between the Green Building Council and Phius for quite a while, and we decided that Phius should have a track within Greenbuild this year,” says Kat. “We call it ‘Phius at Greenbuild.' We hope that we can create a lot of interest in what we do and bring the stakeholders of Greenbuild into the fold and help them with their next challenges.”    The urgent need to decarbonize at light speed, advances in heat pump and envelope technologies, the mastering of air tightness strategies by a growing number of builders, and the expectation that jurisdictions will begin to include Passive Building Certification as part of net-zero stretch codes (Massachusetts has already done so) are all bringing Phius into the spotlight as never before. “It's almost like the perfect storm,” says Kat. “It's super exciting.”    Visit Phius on the web to learn more about the organization and its collaboration with the 2024 USGBC International Greenbuild Conference.    Read about one of IMEG's Phius-certified projects, the net-zero Prairie Trails School in Mount Prospect, IL.

On this week's Hemp Podcast, Lancaster Farming talks to Saharah Moon Chapotin, executive director of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR). the Foundation was established in the 20124 Farm Bill “We were given the unique mandate by Congress to form public private partnerships to support food and agriculture research,” she said, “really recognizing the dearth of or the decreasing amount of public funding going to agriculture research, and with the idea towards leveraging additional resources from non-federal sources, from the private sector and others.” FFAR's research spans a wide array of ag topics, Chapotin said. “We focus on the sustainability of the agriculture system itself, looking at soil and water and how farmers can have the tools they need to make good decisions around really safeguarding their environment and their agriculture systems,” she said. FFAR's research digs into food systems as well. “Thinking about what those in the food system need in order to deliver the foods that consumers need and want, the nutritious foods that they need to access at the store, thinking about processing and ingredients and the nutritional content of those foods," Chapotin said. One of the methods of raising money for research is by building consortia among universities, government, and industry players. “What is really valuable about our consortia to those industry players is that it de-risks the investment for them,' she said. “We're not counting on any one company to support all the research that would be needed to generate the outcome, say, for more sustainable agriculture. But they can co-invest and so that de-risk the investment for them. It often also gives companies a chance to collaborate with their competitor, something they would not normally do on their own.” One such consortium is the Hemp Research Consortium, which brings together such diverse partners as North Carolina state, Cornell University, Agilent Technologies, IND HEMP, and ScottsMiracle-Grow. Community is an essential foundation for sustainability and equity. I believe the spirit of change starts inside, and then in our homes, and then radiates outwards to our neighbors and shared community, expanding out to the Earth where we share the air, water, soil and precious life sustaining resources.   I'm thrilled to interview Majora Carter on her brand new book called Reclaiming Community: You Don't have to move out of your neighborhood to live in a better one. Majora is a true inspiration and source of hope for us as we regroup to address systematic inequality. She is the Executive Director of Sustainable South Bronx, a MacArthur Fellow and winner of the prestigious Peabody Award. We met when Majora served on the Board of the U.S. Green Building Council. I first heard her speak at GreenBuild and was deeply moved by her incredible passion, vision and guidance for sustainable communities.   This interview with Majora is important to me on many levels, including that my parents grew up in the Bronx, about three miles from where Majora was born, and the community that is the main case study for her vital book. In our conversation, we discuss how to regenerate our communities, especially those where success typically meant leaving home to seek greener pastures. Majora shows us that this practice isn't necessary and can be reversed.  We discuss: The shame and regret when Majora felt she had to leave the Bronx to be more successful. The importance of creating the infrastructure to help residents aspire for beauty and wealth: economically, emotionally and spiritually. That gentrification isn't always “success” and that we don't need to escape. We talk about a higher passion, spirit that calls us and inspires us to create our own ministries. I have felt this calling deeply for decades since I first began to work in green building in 1991, and later helped found the green building council movement. The importance of mentors. Community isn't just a place, it's an activity. Back in 2004, Revolution Recovery was just a couple of people working the phones from home, seated in front of the computer trying to get a client. They would rent a side lot, a small place, their first physical space two years later. Then, in 2008, the company opened its first Philly spot, where they poured a big concrete slab and built a retaining wall. After eight years of hard and honest work, they opened their second plant in Newcastle, Delaware. The company now has three plants; the third one opened in 2018 in Allentown. Today, Jon and Jamie Wybar join us to talk about the journey of this company leader in waste management. Jon Wybar is the co-founder and owner of Revolution Recovery, and his brother Jamie works in the company's Business Development. She is an accomplished public speaker with previous engagements at Greenbuild (2018), NeoCon (2018), AIA National Convention (2017) and SXSW Eco (2015). Ellen Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The impact of the built environment on climate change, and areas for growth The connection between climate change and social inequity Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Ellen's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? It's not just sustainability professionals. It's anybody who is sensitive to what's going on with climate change and the environment, it's very easy for us to feel this sense of alarm. That's inevitable. But what happens sometimes is that sense of alarm translates into call to action and a passion, which is great. But if not approached with the spirit of generosity and patience, that passion and drive can often come across as a little bit sanctimonious. When that happens, we channel our enthusiasm into a level of judgment that can turn people off and actually work against us. So the advice that I have is that we have to look at the long game. We have to meet people where they are. We have to realize that if we're too far ahead, then nobody's going to follow us. It's really hard when you just see incremental progress happen project after project after project. But what I've learned is that sometimes that has to be enough. We can't let perfect be the enemy of good. This is a marathon and not a sprint. So we have to be very self aware and sensitive, and we have to be smart and crafty and thoughtful about how we are approaching this topic because it is politicized and it comes with a set of baggage that is working against us. There's an art of persuasion here that is really crucial if we want to get beyond just talking to the people who already agree with us. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I want you to ask me the next question because I want to answer both of them together.  What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read?  The book that fundamentally changed the way that I thought about sustainability was Paul Hawkins' The Ecology of Commerce, which came out in the mid-nineties. It's maybe more relevant today. The basic premise is that in the capitalist society and the way that our economy is currently structured, companies are incentivized, for lack of a better word, to as efficiently and cheaply as possible take, make and waste. The companies that can do that the best are the ones that make the most profit while the rest of us are incurring the debt of environmental degradation and social degradation. Those things aren't monetized, but we are carrying that debt. In order for us to actually make some substantive, meaningful change, we have to look at our economy. We need to look at our economy more as a whole system. Typically what you would see in nature is that one plant or animal is creating waste that is nutrients for another organism. We've got to look at a circular economy where we're doing that too. There's a closed loop where the waste of one is the feed stock of another. We are never going to make enough progress if we're just trying to guilt people into recycling more, buying less single use plastic, turning off energy, turning off their lights, using energy efficient appliances. Some people are going to do that, some people are not. But it's never going to be enough in order for us to make the change that we need to make. In order for us to have a fundamental shift, we have to make the right thing, the default, the easy thing to do, and we need to fundamentally change our economic structure so that corporations don't define their success solely by their bottom line profit or their distributable profit to their shareholders. But they're looking at the full, common good in terms of environmental and social degradation. So that brings me to your first question about what excites me right now in the world of sustainability. The climate science has been conclusive that our economy has to fundamentally get off of fossil fuels. The realist and pessimist in me saw that come out in 2018 and then again in 2019. The realist and pessimist in me says, how are we going to slow down our economy long enough to remake it and get it off of fossil fuels? The technology is there, it's the collective will. I struggled to see how the powers that be, the corporations, the politicians, the leaders, and not just in the United States, but all over the world, I didn't see a lot of motivation on their part. I think Gretta Thornburg rightly has pointed that out many times. The collective will just wasn't there. I will say what has thrown a wrench in that is COVID-19. COVID, it's horrible, the amount of people that are coming down with it, the amount of people that are dying, the disproportionate effect on minority and socio-economic and disadvantaged communities. It's laying bare so many problems, but it's the wrench in the system that gives me hope that that maybe this is our chance. The timeline is right in front of our faces. The wrench in the system has occurred. We are all at home. Everything has slowed down. The economy is tenuous at best. It feels like this is the moment in time where we can fall on our faces forward faster. We can start to make up ground in a way that we might not have been able to had this not happened. I don't need to elaborate on this, but I think the administration change is the key to that whole thing happening. If we have four more years of the same administration, obviously this is not going to happen. So the moment in time is here, the stars have aligned in a weird way for us to really start to look at some meaningful, significant, and systematic changes to our society. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? The thing that I have seen that is a little bit different about my niche of my industry, the sustainability professionals within the architecture industry, I don't know that I've ever seen in another group. Technically we're competitors, we're in firms that are competing each other to win work. Because we've always been a little bit of the underdog, we've been kind of on the outskirts. People are sometimes slow to listen to us and absorb what we're trying to say. But because of that, I feel like we have formed a pretty tight knit group of people. I can honestly say that I know personally most of my sustainability leader counterparts in most other firms. A lot of them have been my mentors, a lot of them I would consider my friends outside of work. It's because of groups like BuildingGreen. BuildingGreen is a website educational platform that is dedicated to all things sustainability in the architecture, engineering and construction world. They have a great database that covers everything from anything you'd want to know about LEED, to product specifications, to great articles that cover the gamut on all things sustainability, but they also facilitate groups like what started out as the SD Leaders. The SD Leaders, it's a safe space for us to come together and talk about opportunities for us to advance sustainability and high-performance in our industry together. We try to skirt around anything that might be proprietary or causes to divulge secret information about any particular firm, but allow us to collectively crowdsource what's working in your firm; what have you been doing that's helped people gain more knowledge around the built environment and materials or resilience or whatever the topic might be. The other group that's followed in the SD Leaders' footsteps that has created the Countdown on Carbon page that I referenced is the LMRT, which stands for a Large Firm Round Table. They have a sustainability group and that group is more specific to the challenges and opportunities for a large firm, but they've also been a bit more actionable in terms of what can we do to get together as the 60 largest firms in the United States to start to move the market or move collective positioning. Because we're the large firms it's been really great to see such camaraderie and aligning from groups that would otherwise be solely in competition. It's a unique network. The Large Firm's CEOs for instance have said, we need to realign ourselves to be more like the sustainability group, because they collectively come together and get things done. It's a unique corner of the industry, but I think that it has helped all things sustainability in the built environment evolve farther faster. In this episode of the Build Hatch Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Kain Bliss from Greenbuild Constructions. In this episode we talk about: Kain is a builder based in the Hunter Valley of NSW who grew up locally. Once Kain hit his teenage years his interest in construction was sparked as he joined the family plumbing business.   Completing a drafting course at TAFE was critical to his interests in building and he attributes these skills as the foundation for his career. Fresh out of school, Kain and his father went into business together using a proprietary green-wall system and soon after Greenbuild Constructions was born. Kain was thrown into the deep end of the family business, and like a sponge, learnt all aspects from accounting to site management. The choice to start a new business in construction rather than continue to work in the family plumbing business. Kain's first job with Greenbuild and the learning experiences he used for later projects.  The motivation to go from small family projects to multi-million-dollar homes. Kain shares how optimism led to business motivation and is passionate to take on any challenge. The choice to focus on quality builds rather than quantity of builds to allow for the fundamentals to be established.  The old bull verse young bull mentality and how Kain and his father balanced each other as Greenbuild grew. Managing risk and putting it all on paper to clearly structure plans and mitigate risks. Sharing the load of staff between the business and why Kain's first hire was an estimator role. In business, a routine is very important and why we need to work on the business not just in the business. Outside of work Kain loves a bit of footy, but mostly spends his downtime with his young family. The impact of COVID on Greenbuild and how Kain has managed his 20 staff during this time. Kain's approach to estimating the number of builders needed to complete projects. The elusive ‘holy grail' of project management and scheduling systems, and Kane's advice for new builders. Greenbuild 's current project is ‘The Ridge' at Nelson Bay, which has come off the back of ‘Salt' at Shell Bay. The reason Kain suggested a re-design for The Ridge and the reaction of the client to these changes.  The challenges of working on a rock shelf and the adjustments made along the way. Esteban holds the following credentials: LEED AP BD&C, LEED AP O&M, GREEN RATER, and Certified Building Commissioning Professional from the Association of Energy Engineers.  Martinez is Co-Founder and Director of Sustainability at Green Loop, in Bogota, Colombia – South America where he brings his vast array of experience as a sustainability consultant, energy modeler, and commissioning agent. Esteban has worked on over 180 different projects located in Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and EEUU. In Colombia there are very few companies that develop sustainable architecture in every sense of the word. Most of them are exclusively limited to bioclimatic development, which represents only a small branch of sustainability in buildings. At an industrial level, most of the companies that work on ERUs are limited only to the analysis at the energy level, without going into the design and layout of buildings, and therefore the correct use of natural resources. By integrating the energy branch, with the design and rational use of other resources, it is possible to maximize the reduction of operational costs and therefore greater competitiveness of its products both nationally and internationally.   Show Highlights   Building in Latin America and mandates that are pushing efficiency. The benefits of a dual degree in engineering and architectural for bigger impact.  How a “fluke” started the whole green building movement in Colombia? Esteban's entrepreneurial journey to bringing LEED projects to Colombia. Energy simulations and  bio climatic analysis  throughout the world. A LEED gold rating system with less than 1% of extra costs.  Materials that adapt to what the environment is bringing.  The client looking at money is a good part of the sustainable equation. The impact Greenbuild has on your career.   “Remember that sustainability is about people, planet, and profit. If the profit is not there, your client will probably do the project that you're pursuing, but he will never do it again. Welcome back to the second episode in this series on waterway regeneration. In this series we'll be looking into the often overlooked role of the water cycle and its effects on the climate crisis. I'll be speaking with experts and innovators about how repairing the hydrological cycle and the health of our waterways can lead to the restoration of all sorts of ecological services and the health of entire ecosystems as a result.  In this week's episode I got to chat with Jerry Yudelson, the author of 13 full-length professional and trade books on green buildings, integrated design, green homes, water conservation, building performance and sustainable development. Dubbed 'The Godfather of Green' by Wired Magazine, Jerry's passion for optimizing the built environment is reflected by his many years of professional experience in the green building and certification fields, serving as an elected LEED Fellow and as president of the Green Building Initiative. Dry Run also demonstrates best practices for achieving "net zero" water use in the built environment through, water conservation strategies for buildings, factories, cities and homes, rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse and water reclamation systems, water efficiency retrofits, onsite sewage treatment, and new water reuse and supply technologies. To support the 2030 Challenge, the American Institute of Architects created the 2030 Commitment Program, aimed at transforming the practice of architecture to respond to the climate crisis in a way that is holistic, firm-wide, project-based, and data-driven. Over 400 A/E/P firms have adopted the 2030 Commitment, and firms from all over the country have been tracking and reporting projects since 2010, with over 2.7 billion ft2 of project work reported in 2016 alone. Join Kristof as he interviews Nathan Kipnis of Kipnis Architecture + Planning as they discuss the 2030 Commitment and all topics in-between._____________________________________Nathan Kipnis, FAIA, LEED BD+CFounder & Principal, Kipnis Architecture + PlanningNathan Kipnis has spent his career practicing and promoting the importance of sustainability and energy efficiency in architectural design. A life-long interest was initially sparked during the 1973 energy crisis, and Mr. Kipnis designed his first solar home, located in Boulder, CO, when he was just 22 years old.Master of Architecture | Emphasis: Energy Conscious Design - 1985Arizona State University, TempeBachelor of Environmental Design - 1983University of Colorado, BoulderAIA National 2030 Commitment Working Group - 2014 to current (Co-chair 2018-2019)AIA Chicago 2030 Commitment Working Group - 2010 to 2016Citizens Greener EvanstonBoard of Directors - 2010 to 2014Renewable Energy Task Force - 2008 to currentThe architectural work designed by Mr. Kipnis has been widely published both locally and nationally.Selected awards and distinctions include:2015 - Elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Before the advent of air conditioning, before electricity, everything that was built related to nature. Nate understands that. He made a habit of it long before it was fashionable.” — Stanley Tigerman, FAIA and co-founder of Archeworks.Viewing the mission beyond his own practice of architecture, Mr. Kipnis’s leadership was instrumental in helping to develop the idea of an offshore wind farm in Lake Michigan off Evanston's shoreline. The work led to a Design Evanston Urban Design/Planning award, and the project is now on the DOE's list of potential offshore wind farm sites.Additionally, he currently serves as Co-chair for The National AIA AIA 2030 Commitment’s working groups. In this capacity, he assists architects with the AIA 2030 Commitment, whose goal is to design full Net Zero buildings by 2030.Nathan Kipnis also lectures extensively on topics related to sustainable architectural design and renewable energy. He has been an invited speaker at numerous symposiums and conferences, including at national AIA conventions, the Chicago AIA, Archeworks, GreenBuild, The Midwest Renewable Energy Association, the Center for Green Technology in Chicago, and Northwestern University's “Green City Summer Institute,” as well as being one of the keynote speakers at the Mother Earth News Fair, among others.Recognized as Chicago’s premier award winning sustainable architectural practice, Kipnis Architecture + Planning (KAP) was founded in 1993 and is based in Evanston, Illinois. KAP has practiced the architectural design philosophy of 'High Design/Low Carbon™' long before it was in vogue. They are guided by the idea that architectural design excellence need not be sacrificed for principles of sustainability. Rather, they believe sustainable design expands the possibilities for innovative architectural forms, construction methods and the use of materials. A particular expertise is the architectural integration of passive solar and bioclimatic design. They are early signatories to the AIA's 2030 Commitment, rigorously working towards having their projects be 'net zero' for their energy use by 2030.____________________________________Architecture 2030 ChallengeThe urban built environment is responsible for 75% of annual global GHG emissions: buildings alone account for 39%. Eliminating these emissions is the key to addressing climate change and meeting Paris Climate Agreement targets. To accomplish this, Architecture 2030 issued The 2030 Challenge in 2006 asking the global architecture and building community to adopt the following targets:All new buildings, developments and major renovations shall be designed to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 70% below the regional (or country) average/median for that building type.At a minimum, an equal amount of existing building area shall be renovated annually to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 70% of the regional (or country) average/median for that building type. The fossil fuel reduction standard for all new buildings and major renovations shall be increased to:80% in 202090% in 2025Carbon-neutral in 2030 (using no fossil fuel GHG emitting energy to operate). These targets may be met by implementing innovative sustainable design strategies, generating on-site renewable energy, and/or purchasing (20% maximum) off-site renewable energy._______________________________2030 Commitment ProgramJoin the 2030 Commitment today and become part of a growing network of designers striving to meet the 2030 Challenge targets. As director of market transformation & development for the TRUE Zero Waste certification, Stephanie Barger is responsible for the growth and development of the TRUE program. Barger helped launch TRUE, which is owned and administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) in 2017. GBCI is the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green business industry performance and practice globally and administers all LEED green building certifications. TRUE was acquired by GBCI in 2016 and was previously known as U.S. Zero Waste Business Council, which Barger formed in January 2012. Barger has been dedicated to meeting the growing need for educational resources, peer-to-peer networking and third-party certification for businesses across the nation related to waste reduction and zero waste. She brings over 25 years of experience in environmental stewardship, employee training, management consulting and business development. Prior to forming the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council, Barger spent 15 years leading Earth Resource Foundation (ERF), a dynamic high school environmental leadership program. ERF’s campaigns included curbing plastic pollution through zero waste, promoting native plant restoration, advocating for smoke-free beaches and improving watershed management. In 2009, ERF was awarded a Federal Stimulus Grant (the California Green Jobs Program in Orange County) to provide training for at-risk youth in zero waste and career development. Stephanie Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The TRUE Zero Waste certification and its value for sustainability professionals The zero waste movement in the United States The TRUE Advisor program Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Stephanie's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I think having a really great team around you - so energy experts, water experts, etc. And then knowing what you don't know and having a go-to organization or go-to person. Google is a great thing. There's lots of resources out there. Really building that team, and that can be nonprofits and other industry professionals. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I think the shift that our consumers and our businesses are getting the simple things, like this wave of eliminating straws. We worked for many, many years to ban styrofoam and ban plastic bags and it seems like with the straws, people are getting it. We just don't need that. It's a little thing, but it's a big thing, and with that there is enthusiasm, especially from businesses. With the commodities market, with politics, with deregulation, there are a lot of things that are taking sustainability backwards. But our businesses believe in it and they see the power of it. They have 20 year goals. So, the cycles of politics don't really affect them and they just keep moving forward. I appreciate that with businesses, the leadership and the longterm goals that they're setting. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? The Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawkens. Basically, anything by Paul Hawkens, even his first books. But The Blessed Unrest really talks about that we're not alone. There are millions and billions of people that are working on these sustainability issues, whether it's in their home that they don't even talk about or in their local community. So, it just inspires me that we're all in this together. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? So as I mentioned, the EPA, they have their Warm Model and WasteWise. It's really fun to go in and enter your data and they give you great graphics or facts - like how many trees are you saving, how many car trips etc. I think the very simple thing of doing a zero waste in your home. So, taking your zero waste audit, taking our TRUE zero waste rating system, and doing it in your own home. There is power in that to see the challenges and the opportunities that exist Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at TRUE? Our website is: www.true.gbci.org. Or you can go to the US Green Building Council main website at www.usgbc.org. You can see all the different certifications and all the resources that are available. And a huge resource is attending Green Build in Chicago. There's over 20,000 professionals that attend Green Build and it's just this amazing resource of energy and knowledge and networking.
