The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the importance of understanding how we represent language. When we speak, we're essentially painting pictures with our words, and these images can differ significantly based on our individual histories, memories, and filters. As I engage more in this realm, particularly in the areas of teaching, coaching, and working with executives, I've discovered the foundational importance of understanding how our brains process language. It's intriguing to see how we represent language in various ways, leading to potential misunderstandings. Let's break it down into the primary modalities of language representation—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each person tends to lean towards one of these in their learning and processing. For instance, if you're a visual learner, you might find that you need to see things to truly understand them. On the flip side, someone who's more kinesthetic might need to physically engage and walk through concepts to grasp them fully. This distinction is crucial, especially in organizational settings. Recognizing and respecting these differences in communication styles can prevent misunderstandings and enhance team dynamics. I've noticed this plays out not just in the workplace but also at home, especially when it comes to understanding how our kids learn. It's essential for parents to recognize whether their child is more visual, auditory, or kinesthetic in their learning approach. This insight can be a game-changer in how we support and empower our children in the classroom. The same principle applies to ourselves—knowing how we best learn helps in effective self-communication and understanding. As we explore these communication dynamics, it's also crucial to touch upon trauma-informed communication. Our past experiences and traumas influence how we process language. By being aware of this, we can approach responses and reactions from a different perspective, leading to more empathetic and effective communication. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about When Our Past Gets in the Way of Our Progress; the impact of past traumas on personal progress. Personal and professional development is an ongoing process, and everyone has their own experiences and struggles with past traumas. Despite my involvement in a business partnership, I have hesitated to legally become a part of it due to my own fears and past experiences. I've witnessed the challenges and failures of partnerships in the past, which have influenced my decision to remain a sole owner in her practice. It's important to recognize how unconscious trauma responses can hinder personal and professional growth. You ought to identify areas of resistance in your life and career that may be rooted in past experiences. Paying attention to physical sensations and thoughts that arise when faced with opportunities outside of one's comfort zone. By exploring the origins of these resistances, individuals can understand how past traumas may be impeding their progress. The trauma responses, such as fight, flight, freeze, submit, or fatigue, can manifest in different contexts. Just like my personal experience of freezing and backpedaling when considering a legal partnership, perceiving it as a threat. Taking an observer's perspective, I realize that my own involvement in the partnership may actually be causing harm, despite my initial resistance. It's important to seek support from others to address these traumas and blind spots. Whether through working with a coach, therapist, or other professionals, the significance of healing past wounds is to prevent their reemergence and to break generational cycles. By healing the past, individuals can transform their future and contribute to the healing of future generations. It's important to reflect on your own experiences and consider how past wounds may be influencing your present actions and decisions. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Knowing Your Child's Relationship to Structure & Time according to Myers Briggs. We explore the fascinating topic of personality traits and their impact on time management. We delve into the contrasting characteristics of perceivers and judgers, providing insights on how understanding these traits can help parents support their children effectively. Perceivers vs. Judgers Perceivers are individuals who thrive on flexibility and adaptability, while judgers prefer structure and organization. Perceivers often struggle with time management and organization, while judgers excel at planning and meeting deadlines. Maiysha shares a personal story about her experience as a perceiver and how she found a balance between structure and freedom by allocating specific time for writing chapters. Nurturing Perceiver and Judger Children Perceiver children need more accountability and structured when it comes to completing tasks within specific time frames. Judger children naturally set up structures to ensure tasks are completed on time and may require less guidance. Parents should be mindful of their children's natural inclinations and provide appropriate support, whether it be additional structure for perceivers or fostering flexibility for judgers. Children can be unintentional teachers and accountability buddies for parents, as parents learn to adapt and support their children's unique needs. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Understanding Our Children's Personalities; The Thinker & The Feeler - the thinker-feeler polarity within the Myers-Briggs framework. Thinkers are known for their logical, analytical minds and a preference for making decisions based on rationality and objective criteria. Feelers, on the other hand, prioritize emotional considerations and seek harmony and empathy in their interactions. Understanding these fundamental differences is crucial in nurturing and supporting our children. We should understand the importance of recognizing and honoring our children's thinker-feeler tendencies. By doing so, we can create an environment that nurtures their strengths and supports their growth. It's essential to provide thinkers with intellectual stimulation and opportunities for critical thinking, while also fostering their emotional intelligence. For feelers, we need to cultivate an atmosphere that values emotional expression and teaches them how to identify and manage their feelings effectively. We should never confine our children to rigid categories or stereotypes solely based on their thinker-feeler tendencies. Each child is a unique individual, and it's vital to celebrate and embrace their individuality. As parents, our role is to create a nurturing space that respects and appreciates their diverse blend of traits. Engage in activities that stimulate both the intellectual and emotional aspects of your child's personality. Discuss books or movies that explore complex themes while also delving into the characters' emotions and motivations. By integrating these experiences, we can support the holistic development of our children. We need to reflect on your own thinker-feeler tendencies and how they impact your parenting style. Understanding your own strengths and weaknesses in this regard allows you to approach interactions with your child in a more balanced and empathetic manner. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Understanding How We Process Differently Increases Empathy. The Myers-Briggs personality inventory helps us understand others better. The importance of knowing how we process information is just as important as the content we process because there is a spectrum for each dichotomy, and we shouldn't box people into one category. Introverts get their energy from quiet and alone time. It is important to understand these differences in order to better interact with and care for our children. Note that it's important to recognize and respect these differences, and that we can do this by asking others what they need and honoring those needs. Challenges can arise when a parent is extroverted and their child is more introverted. As someone who grew up as an introverted child with an extroverted parent it's important for parents to give their introverted children space to recharge, especially after a draining day at school. Over-communicating can be overwhelming and draining for introverted children, so allowing them time to decompress and engage when they're ready can create a safe space for them to connect with their parents. For parents and children who are both on the introverted side of the spectrum finding non-verbal ways to connect and engage, such as working on a puzzle or playing together in silence, this can also be a helpful approach for partners in relationships. There is an importance of understanding different processing styles in the workplace. By recognizing how others work best and are most productive, managers can give feedback that is effective and help individuals thrive in roles that are best suited for their strengths. While it's important to honor and respect our natural tendencies, it's also valuable to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and grow as individuals. How we can better understand and honor the different ways that individuals process and engage with the world, whether in our personal or professional relationships. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Understanding Our Children's': Developing Personalities Through Myer-Briggs Lens. As a parent and educator, I firmly believe that empowering ourselves to understand our kids' personalities is essential to help them grow and develop into happy, healthy adults. Before we dive in, let me give you a brief overview of Myers-Briggs. It's a popular personality profile test that categorizes people into 16 different personality types based on their preferences for certain traits. It's important to note that this tool is not meant to box people in but rather express tendencies based on these personality types. The first category we'll discuss is introversion versus extroversion. Contrary to popular belief, being introverted doesn't mean you're shy or timid. Instead, it measures where people derive their energy. Do they recharge by being around people, or do they primarily recharge by spending time alone? It's important to understand that introversion and extroversion are not black and white; rather, they exist on a spectrum. The second category is sensing versus intuition. This category measures how individuals process information. People who prefer sensing focus on tangible, present things and require external feedback to know how to move in the world. Those who prefer intuition are more internally focused, imaginative, and tend to connect patterns and possibilities. The third category is thinking versus feeling. Thinkers rely on facts and logic to make decisions, while feelers make decisions based on values. It's important to note that while people often think of thinkers versus feelers as logic versus emotion, everyone ultimately makes decisions based on their emotions. Thinkers tend to rely more on their logic, while feelers' decisions are more influenced by their values. For example, let's say you have an introverted child. If you understand that they recharge by spending time alone, you can give them space when they need it and encourage them to engage in solitary activities. On the other hand, if you have an extroverted child, you can help them find opportunities to socialize and recharge with others. Similarly, if you have a sensing child, you can provide them with hands-on experiences to help them learn and process information. If you have an intuitive child, you can encourage them to explore their imagination and provide them with opportunities to connect patterns and possibilities. If you have a thinking child, you can provide them with logical, fact-based information to help them make decisions. If you have a feeling child, you can help them understand and navigate their emotions and provide them with opportunities to make decisions based on their values. Finally, if you have a judging child, you can provide them with structure and routine to help them feel more secure. If you have a perceiving child, you can give them space to be spontaneous and creative and provide them with opportunities to explore. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 17 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the Getting to the Root Cause of a Complaint in Our Young Person. As caregivers or educators, we may come across situations where a child or teenager expresses discomfort or dissatisfaction, but struggles to articulate the underlying issue. It could be a physical ailment, such as a headache or stomach ache, or an emotional concern, such as feeling anxious or sad. Whatever the complaint, it's essential to dig deeper and uncover the root cause to provide appropriate support. One effective way to do this is to use the "5 Whys" technique. It involves asking a series of "why" questions to peel away the layers of a problem until you reach the core issue. For example, if a student says they don't want to go to school, you could ask: Why don't you want to go to school? Because I don't like my teacher. Why don't you like your teacher? Because they're mean to me. Why do you think they're mean to you? Because I didn't finish my homework. Why didn't you finish your homework? Because I didn't understand the instructions. By asking these questions, you can see that the root cause of the student's reluctance to go to school is not the teacher's demeanor, but rather their struggle to understand the homework instructions. Once you've identified the root cause, you can work with the young person to find solutions or provide resources to address the issue. Remember, taking the time to uncover the root cause of a complaint is an essential step in supporting the well-being of our young people. We hope this Mind ReMapping Moment has been helpful, and we'll be back soon with more tips and insights. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the importance of aligning family values, specifically why kids' values matter. I've learned that values are what's most important to us, whether they're surface-level or deeper core values that were instilled in us as children by our parents, teachers, and society. When it comes to kids, their values may seem superficial, but it's essential to get to the deeper level of what's important to them. This is because values are what motivates us to our core, and violating them can cause upset and even burnout. As a parent, I've realized that my child's values are crucial because they guide their decisions and actions, shape their character, and help them understand what's essential in life. To align our values, I listen to my child, ask them what's important to them, and model the values I want them to learn. I've found that creating family values and culture that reflect everyone's importance is also helpful. To spend quality time with my son, I engage in activities that align with his values and interests, such as listening to science podcasts and playing games instead of using electronic devices. It's important to go deeper into children's values by asking follow-up questions like "Why is that important to you?" or "What about that is important to you?" By doing this, I've learned how to align my child's values with mine, and it's been helpful in motivating them to engage in activities that meet their needs. I remember how we worked together to participate in a performance that aligned with my son's values of spending time with friends and practicing the activity. By the end of the performance, my child's deep value was met, and they were eager to perform again. Overall, I believe that understanding our children's values and interests is essential, and creating an environment that fosters their growth and development is crucial. As parents, we can align our values with our kids, and it can have a positive impact on their lives. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? 00:50 - What course correcting miscommunication is 02:00 - Course correcting with my son 06:00 - Being a parent and mom guilt 07:12 - Misinterpretation of my comment with my business partner 09:12 - Having courageous conversations 11:40 - Being unattached to the results when having a courageous conversation 12:30 - Being responsible for the impact our conversation is going to have 13:25 - Accountability of our conversations 14:05 - Understanding that people have different perspectives 15:00 - Importance of mindful conversations in adults and children 15:30 - Course correcting our self-talk In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Course correcting mis-communication. How do we course correct mis-communication? Because as humans we are bound to make errors and there's definitely going to be miscommunication due to different interpretations and models of the world. The best part is that you can course correct mid-communication or post communication. A recent incident with my son where he hung on the shower head a little bit harder than it popped out a few days ago so we talked about the consequences that he's gonna contribute to the fix and it was all good. Yesterday while I was going to get something from the cabinet I noticed the hinges were coming off, so I was upset and raised my voice which is something I strive not to do. So I was asking myself how do I turn that into a lesson and also how do I self regulate, so we had a conversation this morning in the car and I explained to him that he's going to contribute in the fixing of the shower head and replacement of the screws. As parents we usually try to be the best parents we can be even trying to be perfect parents (which doesn't exist) so much so that if we lose it at times we end up feeling guilty, what we need to realize is that the fractured communication can be mended. I had a miscommunication with my business partner where I made a comment that was taken personally in a negative way which wasn't my intent, I noticed her body language shift and because of the relationship we have she felt safe to communicate which helped me apologize then course correct the communication and mend the conversation. When we have courageous conversations we open up a dialogue to get deeper into understanding why what we said landed as harmful and the feedback we get helps us course correct the communication. Everyone has different models of the world due to past experiences and trauma, so if you get to have a courageous conversation and the other person is unwilling to course correct then we ought to move in a way that feels best for us. When we begin to be responsible for the impact our communication is having, even before we communicate it, then it will lead to more mindful speaking and communicating. The most challenging thing to course correct is our self-talk because a lot of times the things that we say to ourselves are the result of deeper values and belief issues that are hidden in our unconscious. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 19 minutes! SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how conflict is not always bad. Conflict is a normal and natural part of communication, there's always gonna be something we don't agree on. Steps you can use to solve conflict : Identify the core reason of the conflict : Step into yourself(looking at the conflict on your own perspective) : Step into the perspective of the other person : Be a fly on the wall, and look at the situation on a neutral edge Once you realize that the higher intention is almost similar to the other person then it's easier to solve the situation. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Being the Lighthouse for Our Kids. A couple of weeks ago my son approached me and told me that "I heard 2 third graders talking today and one of them was talking about their friend had a gun and the other person said to the young boy if you're a friend brings the gun to school, I'm not gonna talk to you." I ultimately reported it to the principal they managed the kids, the parents and it turns out that the friend they were talking to did not go to my son's school. My gratitude was that my son felt safe enough to have that conversation with me, he saw me as a person who was open enough to be able to come to with that information. We as adults, we are supposed to be the lighthouse for our kids, our community of the next generation, when we're missing things like this, these kids get lost in the dark and there's no one to guide them, I wonder where are the lighthouses? How do we create that space where our children feel safe to talk about what's going on in there lives? How do we provide them with the right skillset that they can pass down to their friends to help save the community? There needs to be a global accountability conversations and we need to know that there's stages for change. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Is the Truth Really the Truth, Or is it just A Perspective. How do we come to our truth? How do we come to our view? We come to our view by the filters that we've acquired over time, over the years in our lives, these filters of our upbringing, these filters of our past experience, these filters of our environment and where we live of the people that we hang around. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about where we are doubling down to be right. What do I mean when I say doubling down to be right? Well, you know, sometimes we can be speaking or acting or going about our lives in a particular way. And we know it's the wrong path. We know that maybe what we're saying is not accurate or not the right thing to say or harmful. And in certain cases we will double down just to be right. Even when the evidence points in the opposite direction, even when we know that the thing that we're doing is not useful. This is something that is ingrained in our culture and it has a personal impact as well. Because we do inherit conversations, we inherit that being right is right and being wrong is very wrong. All these things are happening subconsciously, but the goal is to bring the unconscious to conscious so that you can interrupt the old patterns. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how when we focus on the doing, we miss the being. We tend most of the times to focus on the projects and overlook who we are becoming. Things that are important to us begin to change. We need to be listening to that - when the environment is pulling into something different we lose sight of our values, sometimes, it's not about making a change but reconnecting to the value itself. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the how, if you want to know how to motivate someone first get and understand their values. What truly motivates us are our deeper level values and beliefs. When one is motivated by staying away from a discomfort, once the discomfort is off they tend to relax, whereas those who are motivated towards a certain goal tend to have another goal once the previous one is accomplished. Sometimes our beliefs and values tend to change depending on situations. You can't stay in a place where your values are violated, where values are misaligned there's definitely going to be a problem. Aligning values moves from forming, to storming, to norming, to performing. It's important to listen deeply to understand people's core values. Despite what most people realize, it's our deep unconscious values that control us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 7 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the difference between the goals you achieve and the ones you don't. In the process of setting goals you need to have the GRIT of taking the action and be willing to receive negative or no response at all. Sometimes when we set goals we tend to be attached on how the goal needs to happen. The process: - Have the goal to be very clear[The conscious mind is the goal setter and the unconscious mind is the goal getter] - S.M.A.R.T goal - State your goal in the now - Visualize and feel how it would feel like it has already happened - Drop the goal in a calendar in the specific date in the future and allow it to go. Listen in as I share my journey to my TEDx talk and the process I used to achieve this particular goal. Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? When we become aware of something we don't know, we become uncomfortable but we ought to see this as an opportunity to learn. We are so obsessed with being perfect and getting it right, which isn't the right way to go but we need to be fine with making mistakes in order to learn and become unconscious competent. SHOW NOTES: It is episode 100!!! Thank you so much to all our listeners for always supporting us since the first day. In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Re-examining our thought habits for flaws. When you find that there is resistance letting go of a negative thought habit you should ask yourself what you are benefiting from holding on to the resistance. Deconstructing the negative belief: - Breakdown the components of why you have the belief in the first place. - You can disapprove the theory of the negative belief by finding a time when you were able to do almost a similar thing to that particular belief or situation. - How were you feeling when you did, that which you think you can't do. - Who do you know that has that skill? Who could you learn from that skill? Always question your life to see how you can create infinite possibilities. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Creating reframes to empower you. Reframing is basically loosening the grip of unhealthy belief pattern and giving a new perspective on the view, giving someone another view. Reframing is used to change thinking in the unconscious level. Types of Reframes I'd like to share: - Context Reframe; It's when someone says something and you change the context in probably a positive way. - Content Reframe; It's changing the meaning of a situation Despite what most people realize, it's the unconscious mind that runs us. SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Creating New Thought Habits For New Outcomes. Thought habits are followed by outer habits, how are we thinking about how we put in the future. Un-resourceful thought habits can be broken by first knowing there origin. Look into the possibilities rather than focusing on what you don't want to happen. Reframing meaning and context in order to get back on what you want.
