Dana and Tom welcome back guest, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IG) to discuss Shampoo (1975) for its 50th Anniversary: directed by Hal Ashby, written by Warren Beatty and Robert Towne, music by Paul Simon, starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Julie Christine, Lee Grant, Carrie Fischer, and Jack Warden.Plot Summary: Shampoo is a sharp, bittersweet satire wrapped in the glitzy excess of late-'60s Beverly Hills. The film follows George Roundy (Beatty), a womanizing hairdresser whose ambition is undercut by his inability to resist the charms of his wealthy clientele. On the eve of the 1968 presidential election, George juggles a tangled web of lovers—including his current girlfriend (Goldie Hawn), his wealthy benefactor's wife (Lee Grant), and his ex (Julie Christie)—all while trying to secure financial backing for his own salon.Shampoo disguises its sharp political and social critique beneath a surface of sexual farce, letting the characters' selfishness mirror the broader moral drift of the era. The film's humor is sly but never mean-spirited, and its direction, full of casual elegance, ensures that even the most ridiculous moments feel authentic. By the film's melancholic finale, Shampoo has revealed itself as more than just a sex comedy—it's a lament for lost opportunities, both personal and political.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guest02:04 Cast and Background for Shampoo03:32 Relationship(s) with Shampoo06:22 What is Shampoo About?16:15 Warren Beatty's Eclectic Film Choices22:05 Plot Summary for Shampoo23:32 Did You Know?24:44 First Break26:54 What's Happening with Sara29:05 A Listener Question30:42 Best Performance(s)39:01 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)44:09 Second Break45:12 In Memoriam46:28 Best/Funniest Lines49:36 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy52:46 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance56:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:02:28 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:07:21 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:14:03 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:16:06 Remaining Questions for Shampoo01:22:53 Thank You to Our Guest01:24:30 Final Thoughts for the Week01:28:00 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or

Karl and Tonya from When It Was Cool review the 1989 Tom Hanks movie The Burbs! Somehow, despite seeing this movie at the movie rental store for years and years he had never seen it. This film is actually pretty great and very fun! Carrie Fischer, Corey Feldman, and a host of other familiar faces from the 1980s appear in this movie. This was a fun one and worth checking out!

Eitan features the music of: The Doors, John Illsley, Jimmy Buffett, Hugo Westerdahl, and many more! Opening Music: MFSB (as always), the signature sound of East to West. Introduction by Eitan Battat: "I've mentioned in my last episode that I am slowing down. Yes, I am. Our chaotic world is stuck in ‘fast forward'. We're trying to cram so much into our day as Carrie Fischer and I'm quoting: “Even instant gratification takes too long”. Slowing down involves savoring the small moments, taking a deliberate pace in daily activities, and finding joy in the process rather than rushing toward the end goal. It's a mindful approach, emphasizing quality over speed. In his Ted Talk, Carl Honore' says: We used to dial and now we speed dial.We used walk and now we speed walk.We used to read and now we speed read as well as speed date. I'm reading Carl's book - the Slow Fix and I will share more thoughts, ideas, and nuggets from that book as you continue to listen to my program. So, I am truly discovering my inner tortoise. What does it mean daily? I'll tell you what it means. It means waking up earlier, so I have more time to eat my breakfast slowly sitting down and not standing. It means I may take a longer road to work. Not the longest. Just longer. It means I may not seek the shorter lane in the supermarket or on the road. Been there, done that! And please take me off the fast lane. So as always East to West program will have some ‘slow jams', music to shift down and slow your pace so you can truly enjoy the music, be mindful and nurture your soul." Carrie Fischer is an abortion survivor, but she suffered through severe facial disfigurment as a result. A life facing insulting comments and discrimination left her in a state of despair. But then things turned around. She met Richard after this man felt called by the Lord to specifically marry someone with a facial disfigurement. They conceived a child, who was miscarried. Carrie saw of vision of her son in the arms of Jesus, and later, miraculously, she saw that exact same vision in a painting. Several miracles followed. Today Carrie and Richard counsel mothers who have had an abortion and those who are considering abortion. They share a message of hope, encouragement, and not one of condemnation. Indeed, Carrie forgave her biological mother and the two became friends. And she also established a relationship with her biological father who had left her mother upon hearing of Carrie's mother's pregnancy. Be prepared to be inspired by this amazing couple!

Carrie Fischer, P.E., engineer with NTM Engineering, Inc. in Dillsburg, Penn., has been named one of five 2022 Young Professionals of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). ACEC's annual Young Professional of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments of engineers early in their career who have contributed to the industry and made an impact on society. The honor was presented at an awards luncheon during ACEC's Fall Conference in Colorado Springs, Colo., on October 18. Fischer was chosen for her work on complicated technical projects dealing with water resources and her leadership, management, and commitment to expanding opportunities for women in the transportation industry. Fischer helped to introduce the transportation industry to young girls with the WTS TransportationYOU program by partnering with the Girl Scouts and has organized a “Women in Engineering” Event for Twin Valley Middle School every year since 2016. Fischer earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering from Penn State and Penn State Harrisburg, respectively. To qualify for the award, nominees must have been 35 years of age or younger on December 31, 2021, and be a Registered Professional Engineer. Nominations for the award are made through ACEC's 52 state and regional Member Organizations. Nominees are evaluated and the honorees selected by the Awards Subcommittee of ACEC's Committee of Fellows.
Learn more about your ad choices. Carrie Fischer is the Globalization Services Manager at Subway, headquartered in Milford, CT. She is responsible for all globalization-related strategies for the company. She has over 28 years of localization experience and has held previous localization positions at Bodybuilding.com as the Localization Program Manager; Hyperion/Oracle as the Director of the Worldwide Product and Translation Group, and Transparent Language as the Managing Editor. She is also a member of the Board of Directors at Women in Localization and a mentor. She is one of the charter members of Women in Localization when it first started in Silicon Valley. She has held various positions in the organization such as the Americas Geo Manager and Program Director of Global Community. She has presented and moderated many sessions for various industry-related events such as LocWorld, SlatorCon, Loc from Home, LocLife, Ascend, and others. Her passions include helping others and continually learning to grow personally and professionally. KEY TAKEAWAYS Each market needs different strategies, and it needs deep market research. For example, Subway has different sandwiches in different markets. According to the market needs, you should rename, rebrand or translate it directly of your product or service. If you are planning to grow globally, you should hire a globalization expert as a first thing and the globalization expert or team should relate to other teams, especially the engineering team and user experience team for great success. BEST MOMENTS “You just get creative in naming, renaming, rebranding your key products in your target markets, and in some cases, you don't need to rebrand or rename it, you just translate it directly and, in some cases, you keep it exactly the same.” “If you are not willing to look outside, from your little bubble, you are not going to be successful.” “Subway has had to invent new sandwich builds per country. Like I said, Canada has completely different sandwiches than we do in the US as does the UK, as does Australia, and New Zealand. They have a lot of the same sandwiches, but they had to diversify.” “Really right from the start and I will even say your success depends on how early you involve the globalization expert in your process.” “If your product involves software, you really need to be a part of the engineering team. Teach them the best practices for internationalisation before they even start building the product. Put in this much automation into the process you can. You minimize manual steps which introduce risks. We're only human, we are gonna make mistakes and forget something and if you don't put these upfront steps in place, the regions will be waiting for months after English is released for their language versions to be released to them.” ABOUT THE HOST Sıla Erol started her journey at TTC wetranslate Ltd as a Project Coordinator and has been continuing as a Key Account Manager after graduating from Translation and Interpreting Department at Ege University in Izmir/Turkey. Austin 'Danger' Powers has arrived! and Fusionfall84 is here to meet him for the first time! I've been watching these films since I was a child, when much of the humor resonated with me, but how will a grown man of the Swedish persuasion enjoy it? I mean, why wouldn't he like it? It has random tasks, miniature factories, lucky charms, Burt Bacharach, Carrie Fischer, and Swedish-made enlarger pumps! ...oh wait. Trigger warning: This episode may include discussions about suicide, mental illness, substance abuse and self-harm. If these topics are sensitive to you, proceed with caution. It may also contain strong language and is intended for an adult audience. If you are feeling suicidal, thinking about hurting yourself, or are concerned that someone you know may be in danger of hurting himself or herself, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 988. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary. The current Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, even after 988 is launched nationally. Veterans can now dial 988 and press 1 to reach the Veteran Crisis Line. Suicide warning signs can be found at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website (Afsp.org). Please be sure to share this podcast with anyone who needs to hear it right now. Thank you for listening. You are listening to'Touched by Suicide', a special podcast series inspired by the memory of Steve Tarpinian, a prolific figure in the sport of triathlon who positively impacted so many. Steve died by suicide in 2015. Our goals are to raise awareness about and decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues. And to let you know that you are not alone. This series was sparked by Steve Tarpinian's surviving partner, Jean Mellano, is hosted by Nicole DeBoom and narrated by former professional triathlete, coach & event announcer, Michael Lovato. Following is the Prologue transcription as narrated by Michael. Due to the stigma that still exists with suicide, some suicide loss survivors feel ashamed talking about their loved one's cause of death. They will not speak openly about suicide or the mental health issues leading up to suicide. When one takes their own life, there is a ripple effect that resonates to the clinicians, the co-workers, friends and family. Each week we will release an episode that offers a different perspective on suicide. We believe that people suffering from mental illness are not necessarily defined by the disease. Their lives can be productive and filled with joy, laughter, and love. We hope to inspire conversation that will contribute to removing the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide. By doing this, we hope to help those who are struggling to find resources that may prevent them from moving forward with suicide. We also hope that if one is a suicide loss survivor, they will benefit from realizing they are not alone and they should not blame themselves for not doing more. Suicide is much more prevalent than one would think. According the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over 47,000 Americans died by suicide in 2019. No one is immune. The CDC believes that suicide has become a large and growing public health problem. Attitudes about suicide are not likely to change for the better until we can speak as freely about it as we freely speak of cancer now. At one time cancer was stigmatized. Only when we can speak openly about suicide and mental health issues without shame or embarrassment will attitudes about suicide change for the better. The personal perspectives you will hear from our guests in the Touched By Suicide Podcast series, along with what I'm about to share, support the fact that change is happening, that suicide stigma has lessened since Steve passed away in 2015. The power of celebrity has led to more open discussions about mental health and sucide. The families of those who took their own lives; Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington were not silent about the cause of their loved one's death. Many celebrities such as Carrie Fischer, Lady GaGa, Prince William, Demi Lovato and Michael Phelps have gone public and speak openly about their mental health struggles. Suicide awareness has hit the mainstream. In 2017, Logic, a popular young singer, released a powerful suicide prevention anthem. The title of the song is the toll-free suicide prevention hot line: ‘1-800-273-8255' Even though things have improved in the last several years since Steve passed, the stigma of suicide still exists. We have a long way to go. When we lose people to suicide, their survivors often keep silent which further stigmatizes suicide. Today I have the honor of sharing the story of Steve Tarpinian. By celebrating his life and sharing views before and after his suicide, it is clear that awareness about suicide is changing. This is important because as one of our guests, Dr. Andreski, shares, “For most causes, awareness precedes progress.”. Steve Tarpinian died by suicide on March 15th, 2015, the day after leaving an inpatient mental health facility. He was a beloved coach, swimmer, entrepreneur, friend and companion. Steve's vision established the landscape for triathlon on Long Island. However, his true legacy is the lives that he positively impacted while on his journey. In his 20's, Steve's depressive episodes occurred maybe once or twice a year and lasted a day or so. As time went on, these episodes happened more frequently with longer durations. Steve would drive himself at a frenetic pace. He eventually became physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. Over the years, Steve won many battles in his private war. He appeared to most as a very happy, trouble-free person who had it all figured out. Steve had a very successful business, was a great athlete and a great coach, and he was loved by so many. He was very good at hiding his inner turmoil. Steve started slipping away in 2013 when he was in his 50s. His depressive episodes were occurring more frequently and were becoming longer in duration. He was a good actor since no one knew he was suffering so much that he would take his own life. In his final months, his mind was consumed by indecisiveness, obsessiveness, and regrets about not following certain paths in his life. Steve lost interest in the things he always seemed so passionate about. In his final few months, Steve frequently became so indecisive that he could no longer effectively live his life. He lost all hope for things to change for the better. Steve finally made the irreversible decision to leave behind his pain. He completed suicide on his second attempt to end his life. Steve's legacy is not that he died by suicide. His legacy is one of kindness and compassion to others in spite of his own personal struggles. He was someone who impacted so many lives in a powerful and positive way. He gave so much to so many with no expectation of a return. Steve was not just a coach of sport, he was a coach of life. He was a gift to all of us and that gift was only ours to borrow. When someone dies by suicide, the loss survivors are left with many unanswered questions. They are often wracked with guilt and struggle to openly share about their loved one's suicide, largely due to the stigma surrounding it. We need to be more open in speaking about suicide, even though initially, it may be too uncomfortable to talk about. Silence perpetuates suicide stigma. In Dr. Andreski's interview, he indicated that not all people who are suicidal can be helped, but many can be. Freely speaking about suicide and mental health issues without shame or embarrassment is important to help to reduce the stigma. Touched by Suicide features perspectives from nine people. Ruth Tepler-Roth is a mom who lost her son Jonathan. Adam Sud attempted suicide and survived. He shares his story to help others who are facing the turmoil he faced. Doctor Andreski [ann DRESS key] is a psychiatrist who has been working with suicidal patients and suicide loss survivors for over 45 years. Michael Stewart is a son who lost both his father figure, Steve, and later his father, Mike to suicide. Rip Esselstyn is a pro athlete friend and colleague of Steve's who shares insights from the athlete mindset Deb Savarese [SAV uh reese] is an athlete that Steve coached who will forever be impacted by him. Mike Barone [buh RONE] is an employee, someone who knew Steve on a professional and friendship level. Jean Mellano is the surviving partner of Steve, a man she still calls the love of her life. Jean is also the reason this series exists. Kevin Hines attempted suicide at 17 years old by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. He knew the second he left the bridge that he didn't want to die. He miraculously survived and today he dedicates his life to helping others who struggle with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts. At times, we may feel helpless and not know what to say or do but there ARE some things that can be done to help those who are struggling. Many people who contemplate suicide engage in behaviors that we can flag, if we know what to look for. These warning signs may help save lives. In every conversation, the power of hindsight is clear. Everyone involved in this project could identify at least one incident that would be considered a flag. Here are a few. Contacting friends just to say ‘hi',when it is not something they normally do. Typically this may happen when the person has made the decision to take their own life. They could be trying “to clean up their side of the fence” if there was a misunderstanding in their relationship or possibly just to say goodbye. Several of our guests received a phone call from Steve in the month or two before his death even though they had no contact with Steve for months. Losing interest in the things they always loved to do Pulling back from their social circles Making a comment like their friends and family would be better off without them And of course, previously attempting to complete suicide. More warning signs can be found at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website (Afsp.org) Too many are still being lost to suicide; it is so much more prevalent than people realize. Because of its stigma, no one wants to talk about it. Although things are improving with respect to awareness surrounding suicide and mental health issues, ignorance about these topics abound. Comments like “suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem” and “suicide is a selfish act” have no place in our society and only further contribute to the stigma. Anyone who makes these comments has no idea of the mental anguish one who takes their own life may be suffering; that it is so painful, they fear living more than they fear dying. When someone dies by suicide, it is common for the survivors to remain silent about the cause of the death of their loved one. When this happens, it perpetuates the stigma around suicide which makes it harder for people to reach out when they need help. Steve Tarpinian died by suicide. He also left a beautiful legacy of love and support to many people. By sharing his story and the stories of others touched by suicide, it is our goal to educate and to help people who are struggling reach out for the help they need before it is too late. If you have a loved one who is struggling, reach out to them. A friend of Steve's, Peter Ventura, said that when he learned of Steve's struggles, he sought help from a friend who was knowledgeable about how to help a person with suicidal feelings. Peter was given the following advice: “You just have to be intrusive. Don't just walk through the door. Kick the door down and be there for your friend.” As one of our guests says, “You do not have to have answers. Tell them you love them and that you do not want them to feel alone. You are there for them. Don't try to “fix” them.” I will wrap up with a huge thank you to Jean Mellano for making this series happen. And thank you to Steve Tarpinian for lighting up the world with your smile and changing so many lives for the better. We wish you were still here with us today. In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff highlight Heroes & Villains in two classic pieces of work. Beginning with light banter, Heather presents Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Heather offers a summary of the work, going over the poor treatment of main character Harry Potter by teachers, adoptive parents, and school bullies. Heroes Harry, Ron, and Hermione overcome great odds and defeat evil they have been destined to combat. Heather offers her candid thoughts on writer J.K. Rowling's recent fall from grace in the public eye, and a hopeful look at how to enjoy the Harry Potter series while holding Rowling accountable for hate-speech. Did you know? In England, the original title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone. Rumor has it that the word “Philosopher” would be too bland for American children and the switch was made to “Sorcerer”. In the second presentation, Jeff summarizes the globally celebrated classic Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Explained in colorful detail, Jeff pulls iconic quotes from Jedi master Yoda, relating how heroism isn't defined by violence or impulsiveness. Rather, a true hero draws his power from peace. Jeff gives light production notes from the filming Fun Fact! During the filming of the “I am your father” scene, Darth Vader actor David Prowse delivered the line “Obi-Wan killed your father”. The line was changed in post production to keep the secret until the film premiered. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. This time on Force Fed Sci-Fi, we are beginning our look into the Star Wars sequel films with Episode 7: The Force Awakens. Along the way we ask, is 30 years simply too long a time to simply resume the saga, how can someone like Kylo Ren have both daddy and granddaddy issues and how much nostalgia is too much? Let's take our first steps and dive in as we discuss and review The Force Awakens ….. Disney's Acquisition of LucasFilm and the Beginnings of the Next Triology To properly begin the story of The Force Awakens, we have to go behind the scenes for a little bit and travel back to 2012 when Disney acquired LucasFilm. A hefty price tag of $4 billion for the acquisition and with that, the announcement of a new round of Star Wars films would be produced. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise, had actually developed ideas for a new round of films as far back as the 1980's, but made the prequels first to round out the story that the original trilogy started. However, Lucas never got around to making Episodes 7, 8 or 9. Our hosts speculate that the effort of making the prequels and the backlash he was receiving for those in addition to the near constant changes he was adding to the original films probably didn't motivate him to direct another film. Following Disney's major purchase, legendary producer Kathleen Kennedy was placed in charge of LucasFilm and tabbed JJ Abrams as the director for Episode 7 who quickly moved to say that Lucas' ideas for the sequel films would not be used and they would proceed with their own creative group and ideas. There is much speculation as to why Abrams and Kennedy would go this route (probably Disney execs), but the bottom line is that Lucas had plenty of time to make those films and he simply chose not to do so. Star Wars The Force Awakens Cast List Original Cast Harrison Ford as Han Solo: Obviously Ford has had a great career outside of playing Solo, but he returns to the role that made him a star and is a bright spot for this film. Unfortunately, we are met with his death at the end. We won't lie, it got us feeling sad as we see a beloved Star Wars character's story come to an end, killed by his own son too! Carrie Fischer as General Organa: Fischer returns to her legendary role and contributes to the reunion of the original trilogy cast. The years were not exactly kind to Fischer as she struggled with alcohol and drugs, but it should be noted that she publicly spoke about it, even in seminars, to bring awareness to alcoholism and addiction. We thank you Carrie! Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker: While Hamill has no lines of dialogue, his presence in the film serves as a McGuffin. Our hosts believe that he was not made a bigger part in the film as it would be distracting from the newer, younger actors (as it was we already had Solo and Leia taking attention away from the newcomers). Anthony Daniels as C-3PO: It was nice to see him come back once again to reprise his role adding to the reunion of the original trilogy cast. Peter Mayhew/Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca: Peter Mayhew returned to role of Chewbacca, but did not perform the part for the whole film due to knee and back problems; therefore, newcomer Joonas Suotamo also portrayed the part of Chewbacca in this film, and would take over the role in subsequent films. Newcomer Cast List Daisy Ridley as Rey: Ridley's major credits prior to being cast were several short films, but her performance helped launch her career as she's since starred in films like Murder on the Orient Express, Ophelia and the Peter Rabbit series. John Boyega as Finn: Our hosts have discussed Boyega in a prior film on the show, Attack the Block and we finally get to see him in a major blockbuster film! Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron: Isaac had filled up his resume with several minor roles prior to 2013 when he landed the lead in the Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis and like his counterparts,

Grief can be bad for us, but can it also be good for us? In 2016, after actress Carrie Fischer died of a heart attack, her mom, actress Debbie Reynolds, died two days later. People said she'd died of a broken heart. Did you know that, not only can grief cause the uncomfortable feelings we associate with the experience of a broken heart, but it can actually negatively impact your physical heart, your physical health and well-being? But our experience of grief can also promote heart health (whaaa?)! And it can enhance emotional resilience as well as feelings of connection, belonging, joy, and even love in the midst of it. How we relate to the experience of grief shapes how we're impacted by it, that's what we're exploring today. Guess what? Thanks to you our favorite razor company of all time (and that we BOTH use and are customers of) is back! Harry's Razors. Want to give it a try, and support the show? Claim your FREE TRIAL and go to http://Harrys.com/KAFS right now! This K&F show features a plethora of both witty and banter, as well as both kinds of country music: country and western. Why, you ask? Because we reviewed the Blue Brothers instead of the Dukes this week. Luckily for us all, it still resulted in slap stick humor and flying Mopars with cop shocks, cop tires, and a 440 mill built before catalytic converters. Everything you need is in this movie: amazing blues music, zany 110 mph car chases, and sentences that always end in a one liner: 3 orange whips! Carrie Fischer is in this one too - and Jabba the Hut's outfit had nothing on how she looks in this movie. Jackie, Molly and Marcus talk about Carrie Fischer's recently released autopsy report, Beyonce's twins, and interesting celebrity fragrances.
Bo and Luke - for some reason - decide to get naked and go swimming in a pond together, leaving their clothing and keys in the General Lee. Shockingly enough, bad guys steal it. Rosco and Enos chase them (thinking they are the Dukes) but the General ends up jumping into a lake, and Rosco and Enos are convinced (and mortified) that they are dead. The entire town weeps (and it's a serious tear jerker - this episode may have the best acting ever done in the history of The Dukes of Hazzard). Boss decides to cash in on their death and claim they stole things from him. The boys (not being dead) retaliate by ,making Rosco think that both they - and the General Lee - have come back from the dead to haunt him. Hijinks ensue.
