Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

Okay, look. Let's face facts. The series is ending. This wonderful, beloved sitcom, full of equal parts laughs and heart, is coming to a close. No doubt, it's a hard thing to contemplate for anyone, but it's just POSSIBLE that one of the guys is having a harder time than the other. Look, you have to understand, this isn't just a silly little hobby ... this gig has generated monetary kickbacks, medical benefits, travel opportunities, being asked to speak at conventions, movie deals ... and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're not even mentioning all of the other fringe benefits, such as working with world class scientists and engineers to build what is frighteningly close to a sentient AI, or even (slightly flawed) time travel! I mean ... wow. It's so much, that it's ALMOST like we're just making this up. To imagine all that suddenly ending, well ... It's a little scary. But fans of the show deserve the truth. So, ugly or not, we're going to give you a peek into what has been going on, as well as our sincere assurance that the finale review is COMING!  We promise.  No, really ... we pinky promise.  Just like Leslie.  And if you can't believe a pinky promise ... well, then I guess the world is in worse shape than we ever imagined.  So bear with us just a few more weeks.  You won't be disappointed, and it'll be worth the wait.  We pinky promise.

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where Nick Offerman has his directorial debut! Back from her Hawaiian honeymoon with Ben, Leslie prepares for her upcoming speech at the Pawnee Correspondents' Lunch, where every year the government and media get together to roast each other ... and Leslie is determined to give it to the Pawnee Sun tabloid with both barrels. At the luncheon, Leslie confronts Pawnee Sun reporter Kim Terlando and boasts about how she's going to kick ass and take names with her speech. However, Kim is called up on stage ahead of Leslie, and when she gives HER speech, it becomes clear she somehow stole all of Leslie's jokes, leaving Leslie with nothing to present. Leslie ends up bombing on stage, and even worse, is completely perplexed as to how Kim Terlando got hold of her notes. Meanwhile, still on her quest to have a baby, Ann has chosen Chris (who just broke up with Shauna Malwae-Tweep a week ago) as her potential sperm donor. Unfortunately, Chris does not yet know this, as Ann struggles to gain the courage to speak to him about it. After avoiding several interactions with him at City Hall (and venting to Ron about her insecurities), Ann once again tries to summon the nerve to talk to Chris at the Correspondents Luncheon. However, she becomes intimidated when she not only sees Shauna present at the luncheon, but witnesses Shauna and Chris engaging in pleasant small talk ... causing her to continue to vent to Ron. Finally, Ben begins his new job as President of the Sweetums Foundation. Jessica Wicks gives Ben his first assignment: pick a charity for the company to fund. Unfortunately, she only gives Ben a day to do so, and there are hundreds of charity applications to sift through. Desperate for help, he recruits Tom, April, and Andy to help him out. April encourages Andy to do this with them, as Andy has been depressed lately after failing to become a police officer. The team generates mixed results: Tom just cares about Sweetums' fancy lunches and luxurious perks, and April (true to her nature) doesn't care a whole lot about charity ... or helping out Ben. Andy, however, gives it his best try, and actually picks out an interesting after-school music program for at-risk children. Ben is impressed by Andy's choice, and likes the idea, but is still considering other choices as well. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... How did Kim Terlando get hold of Leslie's notes? Is Shauna Malwae-Tweep a genuine concern to Ann, or just a minor annoyance? What does Ben end up choosing as Sweetums' first charity? Can Leslie get her revenge on Kim Terlando? How does Ron handle Ann constantly venting to him? Will Andy ever snap out of his depression? Were Leslie's stolen jokes at least funny? Will Ann ever summon the courage to ask Chris to be her baby daddy? Are there any donations to "Tommy's Tummy Foundation"? Loyal podcast viewers, we've got new storylines, new careers ... things continue to barrel straight ahead in the little town of Pawnee, and we're all lucky enough to have a front row seat! Many thanks to our amazing sponsor, Pawnee Supersuites.

This month's pilot is brought to you by the clutches of the pandemic! It's called Valley Trash written by Niki Schwartz-Wright (The Grinder, Speechless, The Office). Valley Trash was days away from going into production when the network shut it down at the start of the Covid lockdowns in March 2020. The pilot centers on The Harmans, a scrappy, blue collar family living in the deep Valley who suddenly experience a major culture clash when their fourteen-year-old daughter, Abby, gets accepted to a prestigious LA private high school filled with students and parents who want nothing to do with her, her family or their 818 area code. Valley Trash was set up at ABC with Universal TV,  Nahnatchka Khan (Fresh Off The Boat creator), and 20th Century Fox TV attached to produce. Jason Lee was also attached to star before the project was shut down. Luckily, Valley Trash has finally found a home here on Dead Pilots Society. We had a great cast for this one including Chris Tallman (The Thundermans) as Cal, Sophie Grace (Babysitters Club) as Abby, Jake Nordwind (SNL) as Benji, Jamie Denbo (F Is For Family) as Jules, Joy Osmanski (Stargirl) as Kay, Marcus Bishop-Wright (Out of Order!) as Armed Guard, Nola Bowie as Sydney Maybach, Moujan Zolfaghari (Last Week Tonight) as Suzanne Maybach, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. If you want to watch the video recording of this pilot, you can do so for as little as $5 by becoming a Maximum Fun member at maximfun.org/donateTune in next week for our interview with Niki Schwartz-Wright. This week's guest is Jaime Denbo, writer, performer, comedienne and my friend from the New York days. We met working at Toy Fair together in 1997. Until recently, it had been years since I'd last seen her. So much resonance, despite so much time passed. Friendships our are most important relationships. Why don't we treat them with more care on the whole? Why don't we seek couples therapy when we struggle and find ourselves locked in patterns like in our romantic relationships? It sure would shift the enormous pressure we put on those duos. If you've not seen Jamie's show American Princess, you should watch it. It's a tender take on Renaissance Faire life and asks the question, as her solo show on the same theme did, "What is a livelihood?" This question flows into these thoughts about friendship, creativity, place, and why a dog would develop the game of pulling out hair ties. If you're interested in my pocket coaching program, which provides support when and where you need it (we use What's App and 1:1 Zoom sessions) send me an email hi@reihance. com and we can check the fit. Jamie Denbo's life and career would not be the same were it not for her job at a Renaissance fair. Her future in comedy, improv, acting, and now writing and producing might not have taken shape if she didn't mistakenly audition for a gig she didn't understand. Jamie tells Marc how early life misdirection and heavy duty self-criticism changed course thanks to the honing of her improv skills at the Ren-Fair and her coming-of-age at the original UCB Theater. They also talk about Ronna and Beverly, why she doesn't want to do on-camera work anymore, and how she turned the Renaissance fair experience into a comedy series, American Princess. This episode is sponsored by the Netflix podcast I Hate Talking About Myself, Turo, SiriusXM, and Allbirds. Motherhood in Hollywood
Jamie Denbo Finds Comedy at the Ren Faire in Lifetime’s “American Princess”

Motherhood in Hollywood

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2019 49:44

I was telling my friend Heather the other day that I interviewed Jamie Denbo who created a show all about the Ren Faire. Her reaction, like mine, was...FINALLY! Why hasn't this subject been explored and put on display for all to see before? Denbo created "American Princess" which airs on Lifetime on June 2nd. I invited her to tell me about this show and how she became an actress, producer and top improviser. Denbo came to Hollywood in a unique way. She didn't train a traditional top acting school or have famous parents. She got a taste of theater and performing after a random audition for the Ren Faire. She says she was hooked on a life of immersing herself in other characters ever since. After a short stint at Disney World, she found her way to New York and trained under the original UCB founders - Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, and Ian Roberts. She found the experience of doing improv in New York strangely competitive at the time, unlike it is now. But she learned the UCB style and brought it to LA, launching the UCB Los Angeles theater and school. During that time she created her most well-known character, Beverly Ginsberg of "Ronna & Beverly" -  a cult alt comedy act that was a live show, TV show and podcast (with guests like Jon Hamm, Connie Britton, Michael Strahan, Bob Odenkirk, Jack Black, Leslie Grossman, Paul Feig, Ben Platt, Will Arnett, Michael Bolton, etc.). She played Beverly for 12 years while also appearing in guest star roles on the biggest shows on TV. She has had recurring roles on “Orange is the New Black”, “The Good Place”, “F is for Family”, “Speechless”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. Despite all of her success, like many actors, she felt unfulfilled in some ways waiting for an audition to get a small part on a TV show. She says found joy and a sense of control in creating her own shows and projects. For many years she wanted to tell the stories of the colorful characters who live and breath the Ren Faire life and finally had the chance to do it. "American Princess" tells the story of an American socialite who joins a Renaissance Faire after her wedding goes awry, only to discover there’s a lot more to life than she once thought. When Amanda (Georgia Flood), an Upper East Side socialite, runs away from her own dream wedding, she realizes that the life she thought she wanted wasn’t actually right after all. After impulsively joining a Renaissance Faire, Amanda experiences an unexpected awakening that leads her to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about the pursuit of happiness. She quickly develops new friendships, rivalries and romances that, much to the confusion of her family, opens her eyes to new beginnings. Not only does "American Princess" have Denbo's sense of humor and great character development skills, but it's also being executive produced by Jenji Kohan ("OITNB", "Weeds") so it's comedy pedigree solid. Denbo is also a mom of 2 but to be honest, we didn't get to talk about motherhood much in this episode because we were diving in deep about the world of improv, Disney, Ren Faires and making television. Listen to this episode to hear the rest of Denbo's story and watch "American Princess" on Lifetime Sunday, June 2 at 10 pm ET/PT.

In a whole lot of ways, improv comedy is the opposite of depression. It requires you to be present in the moment, unconcerned about past regrets and future anxieties. It means connecting with other people and taking fun risks. And it's full of laughs. Actors and real-life married couple Jamie Denbo ("Orange is the New Black", "Ghostbusters") and John Ross Bowie ("The Big Bang Theory", "Speechless") have plenty of experience in improv, having met twenty years ago in a class taught by Amy Poehler. At the time, John was coming off a breakdown and Jamie was headed for one. They talk about how improv helped and sometimes hindered their path to self-discovery and how they've learned to harness improv's power. Ronna and Beverly's JAMIE DENBO is today's cohost - she and Elizabeth discuss the Good/Bad/Funny (Cute Girlie Clothes! You're In Trouble With The Principal! On this week's episode of How Was Your Week?, America's Gentleman, PAUL F. TOMPKINS, discusses with Julie the horrors of the sea, the delights of podcasting, and the suits Steve Buscemi is forced to stand behind on the HBO program, "Boardwalk Empires."  Also! The delightful and hilarious JAMIE DENBO (Terriers, Ronna & Beverly) brings us an enchanting list of her three favorite musicals, and talks about exactly which scene in "Godspell" will chill you to your meat-bones. This conversation will charm you, whether or not you are willing to be charmed. Beware! Plus: Julie is high on sizzurps for most of this podcast, because she is sick! And in this state, the following topics are discussed by her: Beverly D'Angelo's haunted house, the Dice-Man's cat, Paste Magazine's preference for Ruth Buzzi over Julie Klausner when it comes to assembling lists, Bruce Vilanch's "blind item" talk, Judith Regan's hair, and not much else that doesn't have to do with celebrities or television, sadly because Julie has not left her apartment in a week due to her being sick, as previously mentioned. But! This fact should not deter you from listening from this episode at once--and not as charity! It is a bowtie-spinning blockbuster of an hour-and-change of comedy. Host: Julie Klausner Guests: Paul F. Tompkins, Jamie Denbo Produced by Chris Spooner Original Artwork by Marcia Neumeier Music by Ted Leo
