This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to the ultimate endurance legend, Simon Cochrane, from Athletic Peak. Simon recently smashed the world record at the UltraMan Australia, on the back of a record 34 laps at 24 h Blue Lake Festival, kicking on to race and podium at Rotorua and 70.3 in December in Taupo. He then went on to place 5th at Tarawera 100 miles and 6th at IMNZ. Far out. We discuss his training, his nutrition and his recovery. To be honest, we briefly touch on his racing but this isn't about the race itself (or any of them, as Simon has discussed these on several podcasts already), it is more what he does to prepare for it, physically and mentally. You're going to love it.Follow Simon on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cochranesimon/And https://www.athleticpeak.co.nz/ Simon has been part of the fitness industry for 15 years, beginning as a strength and conditioning coach and building his passion for coaching and personal development. Its biggest song is about an American legacy family and its second hit is about the cold war. Yet despite the global and political concerns of (Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy and Soviet Snow, Shona Laing's 1987 album South remains a true Kiwi classic. Now that designation has been made official with Laing's synth-powered album being named winner of this year's Independent Music NZ Classic Record award."It's a real buzz," Laing tells TimeOut over the phone. "It's an album that, looking back on my career, was probably the highlight in many ways. The whole recording process had a defiant independence about it. We were crazy and made a rule that there were no rules. It was a wonderful moment of unfettered creativity."South marked Laing's arrival home from a life in London and some time in Manfred Mann's Earth Band. She'd left a major label and signed to local indie Pagan Records, whose manager Trevor Reekie got her in the studio and then got out of her way."He has got to be included in the wonder of it all because he said, 'just go for it'. I think we only ever saw him in the studio once in six weeks," she laughs.Laing's memories of recording the album are fond. She'd record basic demos of songs on a Walkman at her home and then take them into the studio the next day. Because the album was, in her words "machine based", they'd be reworked in the studio using various synths, predominately the then brand-new E-mu Emulator II sampling synthesiser which was used for everything from strings, horns, perky arpeggios, and even the album's drums."We'd spend hours going through samples. We must have wasted days just listening to snare sounds," she grins. While known as a guitar player, on South Laing played all the synths and programmed the majority of beats herself, even though she had no formal drumming know how."When I first started writing drums they didn't make any sense at all," she laughs. "Then I realised what a drummer is actually doing and knowing where his foot was and where his hands were."All of this fed into her biggest hit, the globally beloved classic (Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy which, in an interesting twist first appeared on Genre, the album that preceded and set the template for the synth sound of South, before being reprised for Laing's later album. When asked if she remembers when inspiration for the song struck she answers, "Yeah, I do. Because it was one of those lightening bolts.""I think it was 1984 and Edward Kennedy was involved in the Democratic Primary and I hadn't seen him for years. When I saw him I couldn't believe how unwell he looked. He was the baby of the Kennedy family and he looked old and puffy and half dead. When I saw him I said those words out loud, 'I'm Glad I'm not a Kennedy,' and when they came out of my mouth the sequenced synth part – the ding-ding-ding-ding – went off in my head. The first verse was written in the time it took me to get to my gear in the other room. It was pretty quick."In a surprising admission, she says she wasn't particularly enamoured by the song after recording it."To be perfectly honest, I never really rated it," she says. "It didn't feel like I'd put the work in, say, compared to another song that might be more special to me and took three days. But from the very minute that people heard it, their ears pricked up and they'd say 'wow, that's interesting'. The whole idea just blossomed."The song famously includes snippets of poignant speeches from former American President John F Kennedy that fit so perfectly you'd think it was planned that way. But Laing says that idea was suggested by a random dude who just happened to be hanging out in the studio that day. And the rest, as they say, is history.Shona Laing. Today's show is supported by Generation UCAN and iKOR Labs. UCAN to help fuel you to the finish line and iKOR to help you out-recover the competition! I was reading this interview on Choose Mountains with this Boulder woman who was an athlete, a business owner, and Chiropractor, and ultra-runner. In that article she told the story of how a collegiate track career was sidelined by psoriatic arthritis preventing her from running. This sent her on a journey to figure out what was causing her inflammation. Which led to new eating habits and elimination of foods that caused inflammation. This eventually led to her being a healer, health and fitness coach. Anyway, I was intrigued by her story and I'm glad to be able to share it with you today, Dr Ellen KIndelsperger. Also in today's show: IRONMAN and other race announcements on COVID-19 IMNZ pro podium Colorado Classic Route Announced Specialized doing testing of a new bike chamois KHMTT next week Thanks to last week's guest, David Warden to talk to us about pacing and celebrating our 4 year anniversary. Endurance News: THE IRONMAN GROUP’S RESPONSE TO COVID-19 To our global community, We know that both our athletes and our communities want to be racing; we do too. While The IRONMAN Group’s mission is to provide exceptional, life-changing race experiences for athletes of all levels, from their first step to the finish line, we can only accomplish this by providing the safest possible environment, and safeguarding the citizens of our host communities. COVID-19 has substantially altered the global sports landscape and will have material impact on the mass participation industry in the immediate term. We want to reassure you that the health and well-being of our community is our primary concern. To this end, we are doing our part to communicate effectively and follow public health agencies and governmental authorities’ recommendations. We expect that there are going to be substantial and widespread event postponements in the coming weeks and months. The decision to proceed, restrict, modify or postpone an event will be based on availability of community resources and ongoing event-specific risk assessment in coordination with the relevant healthcare and government authorities and the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Board, an independent medical advisory board focused on health and safety. For events that will continue, The IRONMAN Group, along with the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Board, has outlined a series of pragmatic and practical actions designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 or any other infectious agent to athletes and to members of our host communities. These steps will help athletes achieve their goals while allowing communities to secure the benefits of hosting mass participation sporting events. They will be implemented worldwide at all IRONMAN Group events beginning March 19 and will continue indefinitely. Providing Flexibility to Athletes Certain races will be postponed or cancelled due to the outbreak and we will communicate these as soon as practical. Our goal will be to move the race to a date later in the year. We work in close partnership with the relevant public health authorities in the territories where the races take place and err on the side of safety for our athletes and the host community. If an event cannot occur on the scheduled date, we will take the following actions: Postponement: Registered athletes for events that are postponed due to COVID-19 by the local health authorities are automatically transferred to the rescheduled date. For those that the new date does not work, we will allow deferrals into the same event the next year. Cancellation: Registered athletes for events that are cancelled due to COVID-19 by the local health authorities are automatically deferred to the same race in 2021. Other options: We are vetting other options to allow displaced athletes to race in 2020 and will communicate those in due course. Athletes in Quarantined/Restricted Territories: For athletes in certain designated quarantine or restricted territories who have registered for races that take place before June 1, 2020 and have NOT been postponed or cancelled, we will aid in finding alternative races later in the season. For those who are sick, feel unwell, or have been potentially exposed to an infectious agent in advance of a race that will take place, do not come to the race; instead seek medical care. Once you have done so, contact the relevant Athlete Services representative for your race and we will attempt to find you another solution. Safe Event Experience In order to provide the safest experience for our athletes, we are instituting the following at our races, effective March 19. Reinforcing Social Distancing in all elements of the event The hours of on-site event registration will be expanded. Athletes will be allowed to pick up their athlete race kit/race bib and immediately exit expo area. Athlete density will be decreased by increasing individual race space staging, corrals, etc. No-handshake behavior will be encouraged for the duration of the event. Athlete briefing information will be available digitally only. Non-core, high-contact services (e.g. wetsuit peeling) will be suspended. Hygiene First Staff and volunteers who are interacting with participants pre-race, on race day and post-race will be provided gloves. Hand-washing stations and sanitation stations around the venue for athletes, volunteers and spectators will be increased No-touch waste disposal stations and receptacles will be rolled out as available. Frequently touched surfaces at race venue locations such as workstations, product distribution areas, tables and electronic devices will be cleaned regularly. When possible, on-course food and fluid supplies will be single use/single serving closed packaging Athletes planning to return home by airplane or rail are encouraged to avoid travel post-event for 24 hours allowing their immune system time to recover post-race. No onsite interviews or press conference with professional athletes. No handshake/contact on the race podium. Printed document distribution will be eliminated. Medical Service Education and awareness training regarding signs and symptoms of COVID-19 will be provided to all medical and volunteer staff. Frequent communication with health authorities and healthcare facilities will be implemented to assist in assessment, referral and initial management of suspected COVID-19 illness of staff, participants, volunteers, and spectators. This is a highly dynamic situation and we will continue to adapt and adjust as appropriate. We appreciate your patience in the coming days and weeks. We recognize that this is a challenging time but our community will endure. We are inspired by your ambition, and endeavor to be worthy of your commitment. As further updates are available, they will be posted at www.ironman.com/updates and www.runrocknroll.com/updates in addition to our individual event sites and social media pages. https://www.ironman.com/races IRONMAN New Zealand March 7th Last week was IMNZ and we mentioned my friend Aaron Monroe and some of the pros that were racing. We will be comparing a newly designed chamois to a previous model. All in-person testing will take place at the Retül HQ office in Boulder, CO. We are looking for men and women who are avid road/gravel cyclists, riding between 5-12 hours a week, who are training towards a specific cycling goal. The study will consist of: – A Retül 3D Motion Capture Fit screening to ensure the rider is riding in a neutral position that will not affect the comfort of the chamois – In-studio test, where the rider will wear and ride in each for up to 15 minutes – Two weeks of riding in the chamois (one week per chamois), where the rider will log their rides with GPS to verify training volume. News: WTS racing has begun. Sprint race in Abu Dhabi Andrea Hewitt, who lost her fiance Laurent Vidal last year, got the overall win ahead of Jodie Stimpson and Sara Vilic. Two Americans, True and Zaferes, were in the top 5 coming out of the swim. They made up a small pack that was eventually caught. Hewitt ended up sprinting in the past 15m to win. The men's race was yet again dominated by the typical races. Javier Gomez, with his killer run, won his 13th WTS race which gives him 37 podiums for the 50 total WTS career races. Great Britain's Tom Bishop and strong swimmer Vincent Luis rounded out the podium. Next race is 8-9 April in Gold Coast. For those that don't know, you can watch these races with high quality streams on triathlonlive.tv Ironman New Zealand: Guess who didn't win this year? Cameron Brown… But the 44 year old kiwi still finished second. I feel like he will be racing IM NZ until he dies and he will always be on the podium. Braden Currie took the overall but had to fight off a determined Brown. Last 10 IMNZ for Cam Brown: 2,1,1,2,3,3,3,3,3,1 AMERICAN WIN Jocelyn McCauley took the overall win by 12 minutes over Laura Siddall and Kessler. Jocelyn had the 8th fastest marathon on the day overall. Alyssa Godesky also finished 5th overall Felt Bikes gets bought by a French Ski company Rossignol. Welcome back! You might be getting confused by just how consistent this podcast is becoming! But with so much happening in the world of triathlon how could we not!?!? This week we discuss the recent WTS Abu Dhabi race which saw Henri Schoeman and Rachel Klamer take the wins in a race full of crashes and drama! We then take a look at the amazing performances at Iron Man New Zealand over the weekend where Terenzo Bozzone put together an incredible swim, bike and run to not only finally win his home Iron Man but also go sub 8 in the process. We discuss the incredible performance of Cam Brown who at 45 broke his own course record! Today I have Jocelyn McCauley on the show. I met Jocelyn McCauley at the daylight mind cafe in Kona this year and we tried to get a podcast done in the craziness of race week. It didn’t happen, but we finally got there. Jocelyn started the sport of swim bike run in 2013, in fact, she registered for her first 70.3 and shortly after found out she was pregnant. Well, she trained as much as she could and 11 weeks after the birth of her daughter she completed Muncie 70.3 in under 5 hours! She went on to do her first Ironman and qualified for Kona. And in her second IM, she added IM World Champion to her name and first amateur female. Her first IM pro win was Mallorca in 2016 and then she won IMNZ in 2017 and ran a smoking 2:59. 10 in Kona this past October … This mum is the real deal and we speak about her trajectory and her lessons as a 2nd year pro. Many of these lessons we should heed. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did interviewing Jocelyn. I asked the company if they made them..(was not able to find them anywhere) they didn’t know what one was , so i mailed them mine. They used it as a prototype and mailed one back to me. I love it!
