I love these conversations, but this one was fun. We hit on the depths of the human condition to drive each of us on to our own adventures. So what happens when a dedicated trial attorney makes adventure a non-negotiable part of his life? In this episode, I sit down with Patrick Moody, a prosecutor for the state of Montana who refuses to let a demanding career keep him from chasing adventure. From trail running right out his back door to tackling high-altitude mountaineering, Patrick has found a way to integrate the wilderness into his daily routine. We dive into his experiences traveling across five continents in a single year, climbing some of the world's most stunning peaks, and even navigating a life-altering arthritis diagnosis that nearly took away his ability to walk. Patrick shares how he mentally and physically pushes through challenges, what drives him to keep pursuing difficult things, and why he believes that truly living means stepping into the unknown. This conversation is packed with insights on adventure, resilience, and making the most of the time we have. Go Beyond (ft. Colin O'Brady)From never-walk-again to never-stop-climbingOPENING QUOTE:“Man, I'd do anything for an ejector seat button to get me the heck out of here, as fast as possible, that's for sure.”-Colin O'BradyGUEST BIO:Colin O'Brady is a 10 time world record holding explorer, New York Times bestselling author, professional athlete, multi-time entrepreneur, and collegiate athlete. Back in the early 2000s, Colin experienced a tragic setback that meant he was unlikely to ever be able to walk normally again. Not only did he walk again, but 18 months later he placed first in the overall legendary Chicago triathlon. From that day forward, Colin was a professional triathlete, racing in 25 countries across six continents. He then went on to break not one, but two mountaineering world records, where he competed in a series of challenges known as the Explorer's Grand Slam in just 139 days, reaching the top of the tallest peaks on all seven continents along the way.Today, Colin's impact goes beyond breaking records. He's the founder of a nonprofit, and has spoken to the likes of NBCUniversal, P&G, and the Aspen Institute, helping millions of people around the world transcend previous limits and go beyond.Links:WebsiteInstagramFacebookXLinkedInYouTubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[8:19] - The Voices in the TentOvercoming self-doubt in the blizzardMany people think that mega-achievers like Colin don't experience doubt, and that's what makes them strong. But in fact, it's their ability to overcome their own self-doubt that makes high achievers who they are.Colin recalls moments during his trek across Antarctica, when he was alone in his tent, when various different “voices” in his head were telling him to quit, give up, or move on. What allowed him to persevere wasn't a lack of doubt — it was the ability and tenacity to move past it.[13:23] - The Triathlon & the ChairOvercoming adversity one three-hour step at a timeWhen Colin experienced the accident that left him wheelchair-bound, he set an audacious goal — completing a triathlon. But the goal felt so far off and insurmountable, it was easy to get discouraged. Then his mother placed a chair down in front of him in the kitchen, and told him to focus on the small goals. She wanted him to cross the one-step distance to the chair from his wheelchair. It took three hours, and he did it.Later, Colin submitted Everest — and took a tiny pebble as a souvenir. From the kitchen to the top of Everest, Colin has learned to value the way that small things add up to mountain-sized achievements.[16:47] - The Peaks Beyond the PeakMoving goalposts in a life of achievementWe all have our mountain peaks — the goals we think will mark our ultimate level of achievement and joy. But then we get there, and what happens? We feel letdown, and realize there's a whole other peak even higher up.For Colin, he likens it to “post-Olympic depression” — the letdown felt by elite athletes after the end of the event they've worked their entire lives toward. His advice? Move beyond the finish line by acknowledging there is no finish line. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. You have to be invested in the process of growth, because growth is the peak that's always there.[26:16] - When the Consequences Are RealOn risk and danger in live and businessColin's often seen as someone who takes lots of risks. In fact, he constantly assesses the risk associated with any undertaking and only takes them on if he feels the risks are manageable. But that doesn't mean he's always comfortable. On the edge of comfort and risk is the sweet spot: discomfort that leads to growth.Where in your career are you calling it “risk” when it's really “discomfort”? What uncomfortable things can you do while still managing risk? That's where growth is likely to come fastest and hardest.RESOURCES:[4:44] The 12 Hour Walk, by Colin O'Brady[4:44] The Impossible First, by Colin O'BradyFollow Colin O'Brady:WebsiteInstagramFacebookXLinkedInYouTubeFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramXYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Push yourself to do hard things – Abigail Puccioni Chronic back pain and recurring infections is how Abigail got started on her Integrative Health Practitioner journey. Most people would associate integrative health with diet changes, supplements, protocols and a fear of toxins. With all of these things, Abigail felt stuck in the wellness hamster wheel. Mindset and belief system is what shifted for Abigail. The thought crossed Abigail's mind; shouldn't we all be better by now? Abigail decided to go off of her supplements and stopped cutting out certain food groups. Once Abigail stopped living so rigidly she started to live again and even took up traveling again. Colin O'Brady's two books, The 12-Hour Walk and The Impossible First along with the podcast, The Cure For Chronic Pain with Nicole Sachs, LCSW helped Abigail start to change her mind-set. Abigail knew that her next steps would come to her when the time was right. It finally hit her that she wanted to start a brick-and-mortar wellness center. Abigail's wellness center is expected to open in the summer of 2023. In the meantime, Abigail has been focusing on getting outside early in the morning, grounding, meditation, journaling your feelings, breath work, cold exposure and incorporating salt and minerals. *Update – Robyn has been ending showers with a 15 to 30 second cold blast. Innovation is largely seen as the result of efforts from startups, but older companies are uniquely positioned to innovate. This week, Shawn & Ivan speak with Matt McColgan of Radiation Detection Company about innovation in established organizations. Matt recommends The Impossible First by Colin O'Brady (amzn.to/3Hght3q). Colin O'Brady is probably best known for being one of the world's most recognized endurance athletes and explorers. He's a 10-time world record holder and two-time Everest summiteer, and the first person in history to cross the continent of Antarctica solo, unsupported and completely human-powered – an experience he wrote about in his best-selling memoir The Impossible First. In this episode, Colin shares the story of a post-college, round-the-world trip that, unfortunately, ended in tragedy. In Thailand, Colin was severely burned in an accident. His injuries were so bad that doctors believed he'd have trouble ever walking normally, but Colin proved them all wrong thanks to what he calls a “possible mindset.” Esme and Colin also discuss rejecting comfortable complacency, the importance of goal setting, and the concept behind his latest book The 12-Hour Walk, which aims to inspire 10 million people to take a one-day transformative journey to conquer their minds and unlock their best lives. This week's Team Never Quit Podcast guest, Colin O'Brady, could be classified as an over-achiever by most standards. As a passionate outdoorsman, his adventurous life took a turn for a worse when he suffered a tragic incident in Thailand. While he was fire jump roping (yes, a rope on fire), the rope got caught around his legs, causing severe burns on over 25% of his body. The burn wounds were so critical that doctors told Colin that he would probably never walk normally again. But Colin was too full of ambition to let his trauma slow him down. His mother challenged him to set a goal for himself and he decided that he would compete in a triathlon. After a year and a half of intense rehabilitation and training, Colin competed in the Chicago Triathlon. He not only competed, but he won. Since then, O'Brady has raced in 25 countries on six continents over six years. As if that weren't enough, Colin's biggest claim to fame is that he became the first human being to walk across Antarctica solo entirely on human power. No sled dogs, kites, or powered machines. He consumed 8,000 calories a day while burning off 10,000 calories a day. Colin gained 20 pounds of muscle to prepare for the trip. Colin O'Brady became The Impossible First, which was the name of his amazing attempt to achieve the unachievable. In this episode you will hear: • While I like being around people, there's something beautiful about solitude. • I had parents who always gave me positive reinforcement. • When we don't know exactly how we're going to get where we're going, you've got to create your own reality over time. • We're the net product of the 5 or 10 people we spend the most time with. • I started out with a curiosity for nature and adventure in my own back yard. • Fun Scale: Type 1 Fun: Laughing, watching a great movie, dancing, drinking a cocktail on a beach while watching the sunset. Type 2 Fun: Is not fun when it's happening, but a week later you're telling your friends that it was epic. Type 3 Fun: Is not fun when it's happening and it's not fun afterwards. For me, Type 2 Fun is most gratifying. • In Thailand, I saw these guys jumping a flaming jump rope, and because I'm 22 years old, I had to try it. I tripped, the rope wrapped around my leg, and I caught on fire. I jumped in the ocean to extinguish the flames, but not before 25% of my body was severely burned. • My Doctor said “You'll probably never walk again.” The emotional trauma was intense, but my mom would come into my room with positivity, and have me set life goals & accomplishments. I call it “a possible mindset.” • My mom was a positive influence on me throughout my entire life. • All of us as humans have reservoirs of untapped potential to achieve extraordinary things. • My body can always handle more. My mind is stronger because of my previous traumas. • I'm lit up. I have this aliveness inside of me. • Sometimes, you make decisions when you're 22 years old – Then you wake up and you're 65 years old and still on that same path. • My childhood dream was to climb Mount Everest. What is your Everest? • If you're not on the path that YOU'RE meant to be on, then you're not living with integrity with yourself. • What I was really fascinated about crossing Antarctica is that it had never been done; it was a world first. I couldn't call up anyone to ask how did you make it? • Most people are stuck in what I call the zone of comfortable complacency.
In addition to breaking ten world records, Colin O'Brady's feats include the world's first solo, unsupported, and fully human-powered crossing of Antarctica, speed records for the Explorers Grand Slam and the Seven Summits, and the first human-powered ocean row across Drake Passage. Would you be surprised to hear he's a three on the Enneagram? But as he grows older, his approach to achieving his goals is changing. “It's not the same burning desire, like deep in my bones,” says Colin. Is he losing his “three-ness” or is there something deeper going on here? On this episode of Typology, we explore the ways our approach to goals, and the need to achieve, can evolve over time. — Colin O'Brady is a ten-time world record breaking explorer, speaker, entrepreneur, and expert on mindset. Colin's highly publicized expeditions have been followed by millions and his work has been featured by The New York Times, The Tonight Show, The Joe Rogan Experience, and The Today Show. He is the author of The New York Times bestseller The Impossible First and now The 12-Hour Walk: Invest One Day, Conquer Your Mind, and Unlock Your Best Life (Scribner; August 2nd).

I've read a lot of bios preparing for the 230+ episodes of this show. They're all impressive and they set the stage, providing the credibility surrounding their insights. But today's guest is the first person who's bio made me look for the “just kidding – obviously no single person could do all of those things” note at the bottom. But there was nothing of the sort. Hold onto your hats folks – we're in for a crazy ride todayWelcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Our guest today is Colin O'Brady. After college, an exciting adventure in Thailand took a turn for the worse. He suffered burns across 25% of his body and doctors said he would be unlikely to walk normally again. They were right – he didn't walk normally again. Instead, he became a professional triathlete, the first person to complete a solo crossing of the Antarctica, set 10 world records, write a NY Times best-selling book and start a non-profit for kids. We'll obviously spend some time discussing some of the highlights, but more importantly, we'll be talking about YOUR adventure – your dreams – and what you can do to bring them to fruition. You'll hear us hit on something he says in his new book, The 12-Hour Walk, about so often being asked if he's ever afraid of dying during his epic quests up Mt Everest and across Antarctica. And he says…yes. But he's more afraid of not truly living. Experiencing life. It's not a pithy answer and I dig in on what this looks like for us. I'm not interested in death defying feats, but I sure want to get all I can out of my life. Colin's feats include the world's first solo, unsupported, and fully human-powered crossing of Antarctica, speed records for the Explorers Grand Slam and the Seven Summits, and the first human-powered ocean row across Drake Passage. His feats include the world's first solo, unsupported, and fully human-powered crossing of Antarctica; speed records for the Explorers Grand Slam and the Seven Summits; and the world's first human-powered ocean row across the Drake Passage. His new book is called The 12 Hour Walk. Notes: What's your Everest - The question he asked all the rich bankers that night that none had an answer to? What's your answer? What are you doing to turn that into a reality? Limiting beliefs - “We are the stories we tell ourselves.” What story are you telling yourself about… Yourself? Life is on a scale of 1 to 10. Most people live most days around a 5 or 6. They don't have any 1s and they don't have any 10s. What can you do to change that? How can you live a life that has some 1s and 10s? Mantra: "Colin! You are strong. You are capable." The most important muscle is the brain. The possible mindset: See the optimism in all opportunities. Colin's mom told him he could achieve anything that he set his mind to. Colin had an accident and caught on fire while jumping a flaming jump rope... His doctor told him that he would probably never walk again. At that moment, Colin set the goal to complete a triathlon. A year later, he WON the Chicago triathlon. With Colin as your guide, The 12-Hour Walk asks you to invest one day in yourself. The goal? Conquering your mind and becoming your best self. By walking alone, unplugging, listening to the voice within, and rewriting the limiting beliefs etched into your psyche, you can break free of the patterns holding you back and learn how to cultivate a “Possible Mindset”—an empowered way of thinking that unlocks a life of limitless possibilities. The reward: being the hero of your own destiny. Question to ask yourself: What is your Everest? What does fulfillment look like? You must take care of yourself first... Excellence: A deep connection with your why. PASSION. Genuine curiosity Love If no one was watching, would you still do it?

So, what would make someone strap a sled loaded with 375 pounds of food and supplies onto their body, then drag it across a stormy, windswept, frozen landmass at the bottom of the earth for 54 days in brutal subzero temperatures, just to say they did it? What might the average person - meaning you and me - who has little to no interest in doing anything remotely so extreme, learn from this experience that would translate into our ability to live better lives, in far less brutal environments, every day? And, how might committing to a more accessible, single-day of challenge, radically change our perspective on all parts of life? These are the questions I had, and the topics we explore with today's guest, ten-time world record-breaking explorer, speaker, entrepreneur, and expert on mindset, Colin O'Brady. His feats include the world's first solo, unsupported, and fully human-powered crossing of Antarctica, speed records for the Explorers Grand Slam and the Seven Summits, and the first human-powered, 700-mile ocean row across Drake Passage, maybe the most dangerous and brutal body of frigid, wave-stream ocean that spans South America to Antarctica. Colin's highly publicized expeditions have been followed by millions and his work has been featured by The New York Times, The Tonight Show, The Joe Rogan Experience, and The Today Show. He is the author of The New York Times bestseller The Impossible First and now The 12-Hour Walk: Invest One Day, Conquer Your Mind, and Unlock Your Best Life. But, what got me so curious, was how preparing for and then mounting these extreme, physically-grueling challenges, was actually as much, if not more about the mind as it was about the body. And, I wanted to know, beyond why anyone would do these things, how they changed him, as a human being, what we all might learn from this and how we might create more accessible, yet transformative versions in our own lives, and experience the powerful benefits that come from them? And, as part of that, we talk about an interesting invitation he's created to say yes to what he calls The 12-Hour Walk. You can find Colin at: Website | The 12-Hour Walk | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Rich Roll about the interplay between body and mind and how we can use each as a lever to evolve the other.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book SparkedMy New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.ClickUp: 15% Off. "We all have reservoirs of untapped potential to achieve extraordinary things, particularly when we can shift our mindset towards the positive and choose how to react in tough situations." - Colin O'Brady Why should we celebrate all successes (even those of our competitors)? How do you turn big dreams into reality? Why can't we experience the highs in life without first going through the hardships? How does Colin break through his walls? Unconventional Beginnings Born into a hippie commune, Colin O'Brady didn't have the most conventional of starts in life. However, Colin's family didn't stay in the alternative lifestyle for long. At the forefront of the health food movement, the couple's entrepreneurship led to incredible success and instilled in Colin the ambition and determination he is so famed for today. Colin is an endurance athlete, 10X world record holder, and New York Times best-seller. His achievements include being the fastest person to complete the Explorer's Grand Slam, the fastest person to complete the Three Poles Challenge, and the fastest person to complete the 50 highest points in the US just to name a few. In his book "The Impossible First," Colin details his treacherous 932-mile journey across one of the world's most inhospitable environments, Antarctica. This best-seller highlights the importance of self-belief, riding emotional highs, and pushing through the lowest lows. Overcoming Tragedy As a 22-year-old man, Colin set out on his first adventure. Traveling the world with little more than the money he saved up from painting houses, he found himself in Thailand. There, a tragic accident left him with severe burns to his legs. It was here that Colin was told by doctors that he'd never walk properly again — and it was also here that he decided they were wrong. We discuss how Colin went from a hospital bed to winning the Chicago Triathlon in just 18 months. He breaks down how he achieves such ambitious feats and lets us in on the mindset that empowers him to turn struggle into motivation. He also shares the importance of setting goals and gives us an insight into how we can all leverage our untapped potential to achieve extraordinary things. Nothing's Scarier Than a Comfort Zone Even though he's bested mountains, frozen plains, and even an ocean, Colin will be the first to admit that he isn't fearless. He just has different fears from most people. Where most would fear exposure to the elements or injury, in Colin's mind, there's nothing worse than falling into the zone of "comfortable complacency." In this zone, we may no longer hit rock bottom — but neither do we hit our highest peaks. Colin shares why experiencing the entire gamut of life's trials and rewards is important to him and he shares with us how embracing the turmoil of our own minds can lead to clarity and help us achieve flow states. He also explains how the mind can be strengthened and flexed so we can persevere in the most challenging of circumstances, helping us remain positive in the face of adversity. Key takeaways: Find your own Everest and work towards conquering it every day. Cherish competition as it brings out the best in us. Don't get preoccupied with the finish line. Just focus on the next checkpoint. Today we welcome a pair of guests to our show, Doug Greenberg and Jason Hanes, hosts of the Rocky Minute podcast. They both also happen to be police officers for nearly 20 years, serving in New Jersey. We started the discussion with how they were drawn to law enforcement. They discussed the wave of pro-police sentiment that existed post-9/11 and where it is today. They explained several changes they've seen, both inside the department and outside. Along the way, they both realized they shared a love of the Rocky franchise and they decided to start a podcast about it. They use the same movies-by-minutes format to break the films down, one minute of the movie at a time. Doug and Jason hang out through the remainder of the show as Alan and Walt go through the crazy news segment. They also provided the listener with some entertainment suggestions. Movies/Streaming/Books: Walt gives the reboot of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix a solid two thumbs up and reminded folks that Dragon Con would not be live this year, only virtual. Walt also finished reading, "In Memory of Todd Woods," by Tom Taylor, one of the podcasters on The Indiana Jones Minute and other shows. Doug is re-watching The Wire and says of all the cop shows, its one that hits pretty close to home when it comes to the reality of being a police officer. Jason recommended the book, "The Impossible First," written by Colin O'Brady about his solo crossing of the Antarctic. Podcasts: Walt suggested "A Way with Words" and "Culpable" as two podcasts worth exploring. Doug suggested "Team Never Quit," a show hosted by two Navy Seals who find inspirational people and their stories of never giving up in the face of tremendous adversity. He also likes, "Big Screen Sports," a podcast that is going through all of the sports-related movies and whether or not they are close to what really happened. Jay didn't have a particular show, but was so impressed with the story of former Navy Seal, Chadd Wright, he suggested searching for his name and listen to whatever shows where he is a guest. Alan did a shout-out to "The Real Queens of Queens," for hitting their one-year anniversary. He also said that he and Walt would be upcoming guests during season two of their show. He then did a shout out to the, "Bad Cop, Bad Cop," podcast, giving both Jerry and Dave two thumbs up for a very irreverent and non-politically correct take on current events.
