Our world seems to become more divided by the day. We are ending relationships over differences in opinion on political matters. How can we restore unity to our families and communities? In this episode, Angela talks with Andrew Hanauer, the President and CEO of the One America Movement, an organization founded by faith leaders to fight toxic polarization, about how faith communities and leaders can work to model unity during increasingly divisive times. In Andrew's words: “politics will not fill the Spiritual holes in our lives,” but he believes that Scripture holds the answers we seek. Many of us feel that we can have little or no impact on culture or politics, but we have a lot of impact within our communities. Can we work together in the places where we can make an impact and effect meaningful change? How can our faith communities meet our needs so that we do not need to turn to political groups to find our identity?Guest BioAndrew Hanauer is the President and CEO of the One America Movement, an organization founded by faith leaders to fight toxic polarization. One America supports faith leaders and faith communities to reject toxic forms of division and offer a moral vision that transcends our divisive and disconnected culture. Under Andrew's leadership, the One America Movement has become one of the largest and fastest-growing organizations combating division in American society, quintupling in size in the past three years.Andrew is a frequent public speaker at houses of worship of all kinds and has represented One America before gatherings of the National Governors' Association, Americorps, Points of Light, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and many more, and podcasts as wide-ranging as Fuller Seminary and Islamic Relief USA. His work has been published or featured by USA Today, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, Salon, the Christian Citizen, and media outlets across the US.When he is not fighting toxic polarization, Andrew is spending time with his family, coaching little league, rooting for the Golden State Warriors and Arkansas Razorbacks, and participating in small groups at his church.LinksDownload the ProGrace Conversation Guide: https://www.prograce.org/about One America Movement website: https://oneamericamovement.org/One America Movement Substack: https://oneamericamovement.substack.com/

Like so many of you, I have been all consumed the last few weeks by the events going on in Gaza and the genocide that is being carried out against the Palestinian people. We've put everything on pause at First Name Basis to be able to try to share updates and share actions that we can be taking as a collective to try to support the activists and so many amazing humanitarian workers that are on the ground in Gaza. After having some conversations as a team, we realized that continuing to do anti-racism work is one of the things we can do as a group to facilitate productive conversations around big hard topics genocide and anti-Semitism. Listen in to hear more about what I mean. And be sure to follow along as we continue to amplify the voices of the affected populations on Instagram, and check out the show notes for resources to help you redistribute your resources to help in the humanitarian efforts and to help you advocate for a ceasefire. Happy Ramadan to all of our Muslim brothers and sisters! If you are not Muslim, perhaps you've seen Ramadan listed as holiday on your calendar but don't really know what it's all about. Well, here at First Name Basis, we believe the best way to learn about traditions, beliefs and people that are unfamiliar to you is to get on a first name basis with members of that community, so my friend Felicity LeFevre is on the podcast this week to help us learn more! Ramadan is the Muslim holy month of fasting, which started this year on April 2 and continues until May 1. And while my conversation will leave you with additional insight into why this is such an important holiday to our Muslim friends, this interview goes beyond that to tackle Islamaphobia, which continues to be a disturbing problem throughout the world. In this episode, you will learn: What Ramadan is What you can do to show support during Ramadan How to talk to your children about Islamophobia Action steps you can take with your family to help stop Islamaphobia Felicity is Muslim, an artist, a teacher, an illustrator and mother of six children. She was a classroom teacher for 18 years and has taught prekindergarten, kindergarten and high school art. She is passionate about creating education resources and loves to share those resources with teachers around the world. Felicity also recently had her first illustrated book published, “I Can Achieve Anything” by MoNique Waters, and hopes to continue to create books that can positively impact children. I hope you'll take time to listen and come up with an action plan for what you will do to be in solidarity with the Muslim members of your community. Ally Elementary & Ally Elementary Jr. Parents have been asking for a practical, interactive way to implement the anti-racist strategies that I lay out in the First Name Basis Podcast, so I created Ally Elementary — and registration is now open! And we're also excited to announce that we will be launching our new program, Ally Elementary Jr., for kids in preschool through second grade at the same time. During this five-week program parents will work together with their children to create a culture of anti-racism in their home, and I will be there to guide them every step of the way. We will use hands-on activities to teach our children about everything from the untold story of how race was created to how they can disrupt racism in their everyday lives. I am so excited to watch the families in our community make a meaningful transformation and improve their communities through anti-racist action. The Salvation Army's Disaster Services in the USA Western Territory activated an Incident Management Team at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, to provide donations management of nearly 100 tons of items that had been given to support the US military's ‘Operation Allies Welcome'. This effort is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at various secure locations. The Salvation Army's role in the ongoing response began in September and took place over a period of four weeks. The Salvation Army also worked with Islamic Relief USA, a non-profit humanitarian and advocacy organization, to have 1,500 prayer rugs shipped to the airbase. The evacuees were overwhelmingly Muslims, and the prayer rugs were important in providing opportunity to carry out their five daily prayers.

Syed Minhaj Hassan, communications & media specialist at Islamic Relief USA, talks to us about relief efforts to help Afghan refugees settle in the U.S. and other countries after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. We talk about the work that Islamic Relief is doing, the challenges faced dealing in particular with Afghan refugees and how to assist them finding housing, how they are also working towards promoting food security in the country, and what sort of long term support is needed for refugees.Jason Dzubow, writer for The Asylumist and immigration attorney specializing in political asylum and appeals, talks to us about asylum seekers and the processes through which they're either accepted or turned away, in light of the 24,000 Afghan refugees who have already arrived in the US. We also talk about the threats that Afghans who worked for the U.S. face in Afghanistan now, the Special Immigrant Visa program and whether it's adequately implemented and funded, and contradictions the administration is presenting when it comes to immigration and asylum seeking.Jim Goodman, board president of the National Family Farm Coalition, talks to us about the intersection of farming, climate change and corporate consolidation in how we produce food in the U.S. We talk about the mega drought in the west, which has resulted in the first ever water shortage declaration at Lake Mead, whether previous rates of meat production are sustainable, and how carbon credits are not the right solution for agriculture and climate change, harming small and medium-sized farmers and helping big agribusiness, which contributes the largest share of pollution. Jamal Muhammad, host of the Luv Lounge radio show and the Old School Lunch Bag Mix on Square 1 radio, and Dr. Allison Agwu, associate professor of pediatric and adult infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, talk to us about the district attorney who interfered in the investigation into the vigilante killing of Ahmaud Arbery, the charges being brought against the police and medics in Colorado who killed Elijah McClain, and the hard work across the board involved in making police accountable.

Shaykh Hamzah Maqbul talks to The Mad Mamluks about Islamic Relief USA, Zakat and his journey in seeking knowledge. Shaykh Hamzah Maqbul is originally from the West Coast and currently resides in the Chicagoland area. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Washington in Seattle. After graduation Shaykh Hamzah went on to pursue traditional Islamic studies, which took him to a number of countries, including Syria and Egypt where he studied the Arabic language, Morocco, Mauritania, and UAE, where he studied the madhab of Imam Malik, grammar, usul al-hadith, and the two renditions of the qira’ah of Imam Nafi’, Warsh and Qalun, and finally Pakistan where he had the opportunity to study tafsir, usul al-hadith, hadith, ‘ilm al-rijal and Hanafi fiqh. All of these studies culminated in him receiving an ijazat al-tadris, literally meaning “a license to teach” which is the equivalent in Pakistani Islamic seminaries to a MA in Arabic and Islamic studies, as well as an unbroken chain of transmission by which to narrate the hadith of such books as the Muwatta of Imam Malik, the Sihah al-Sittah (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah), and the Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar of Imam al-Tahawi. Currently Shaykh Hamzah is employed full time at Islamic Relief where he is involved in their fundraising efforts. http://www.islamic-relief.org/ Twitter: @HamzahMaqbul SoundCloud: Hamzah wald Maqbul
