BREAKING NEWS: The Steelers have cut Anthony McFarland and Justin Layne. Layne becomes another failed corner back drafted by the Steelers. There has been reported interest for Mason Rudolph. So why aren't the Steelers pulling the trigger? Crowley has the fear that the team will need Rudolph down the road. Poni said screw that – trade Rudolph for a late-round pick and turn that into an offensive lineman and if the team has to use Rudolph this year, they aren't going far anyway. Poni is angered by the Steelers resting on their laurels with available players now on the open market. Former Pitt Panther and current ESPN analyst, Louis Riddick joined the show. Poni asked Louis how Pitt stacks up against WVU Thursday night. He said they stack up well…against everybody. He talked about the QB matchup Thursday, which features Kedon Slovis and JT Daniels, who have had a rocky road to where they are now, but are both exciting signal callers. Louis has a lot of excitement for the Backyard Brawl because of how many storylines are there, besides the fact that it is one of the best rivalries in college football. He described the rivalry as “special” and said the atmosphere on Thursday night in Pittsburgh will be incredible. Louis talked about how much national coverage ESPN will provide for the game. Louis couldn't speak highly enough of how great the Backyard Brawl is for the schools, teams and fans. Jumping to the Steelers – Louis talked about why Mitch Trubisky will be the team's starter to begin the year over Kenny Pickett. He proceeded to say the QB isn't the issue and the offensive line needs fixed. He expects Kenny to “reign hell” over the rest of the league when his time comes. Louis talked about the Steelers GM hiring process and what he went through vying for the job.
July 8, 2022 - Season 12, Episode 148 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, which was recorded late Thursday night, Alex Kozora and I get right to discussing the Cleveland Browns trading away quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. We also discuss the Browns situation with quarterback Deshaun Watson and much more.It was announced on Thursday that Dan Rooney Jr. and Buddy Parker are both semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023, so Alex and I discuss that news in addition to former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman L.C. Greenwood not making the cut.How many touches will Steelers running back Najee Harris have in 2022 and can he join a rare air group of running backs in total touches by Week 16 of the season? Alex and I have lengthy discission about those topics and go over a few unique stats and some history. As part of us continuing to preview Steelers players ahead of training camp get underway, Alex and I spend time during the Monday show discussing Justin Layne, DeMarvin Leal, John Leglue. Isaiahh Loudermilk, Arthur Maulet, and Anthony McFarland Jr. in this episode. As usual, we close out this show by answering a few emails that we received from listeners.
Locked On Steelers – Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast and is joined by Tony Serino of the AFC North Talk show.Ahkello Witherspoon spoke with Pittsburgh media Monday and looks to be the Steelers' biggest free agency add to the cornerback room. But is that the last addition at cornerback this offseason? Currently the top cornerbacks would be Witherspoon, Cam Sutton, Levi Wallace, Arthur Maulet, James Pierre and Justin Layne. None of those players are guaranteed CB1 options for a defense that wants to be an elite group in 2022, so does that mean another addition has to be coming? The addition of a player like Stephon Gilmore is highly unlikely and Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner most likely gets picked very high in the NFL Draft. But both LSU's Derek Stingley Jr. and Clemson's Andrew Booth Jr. could be players who slip to the Steelers' 20th overall pick. If that happens, do Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert make the move to add them at cornerback? Doing so would give the Steelers a potential cornerback star for the future and would be the highest graded prospect at cornerback to come to the team in the draft in decades.Meanwhile, the Steelers have signed Genard Avery to help with the edge rusher group. What does the former Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns linebacker bring to the table? A really athletic skill set to back up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. But is that enough? Taco Charlton should still be on a call list for the Steelers to complete the edge rusher depth group. Finally, after Colbert and Matt Canada visited the North Carolina Pro Day to see Sam Howell, the Steelers have made the rounds to all the NFL Draft's top quarterbacks. 4/23/2021Season 11, Episode 104 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Justin Layne getting arrested overnight and what all that might mean for him and the team ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.Steelers new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm had some interesting remarks in a recent segment on steelers.com so Alex and I recap all that he said. That Klemm recap leads to us talking more about Alabama center Landon Dickerson ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. We go over the reports from Tony Pauline on Dickerson as it relates to his draft stock and how the Steelers might view his medical reports. We talk about the possibility of Dickerson being a Steelers selection this year in either the first or second round.Alex and I have a mock draft discussion and during it we discuss several candidates to be the Steelers first and second round selections this year. We also talk about the three biggest needs the Steelers have positionally ahead of the draft and how those might impact their first several selections. There was some recent news concerning NFL rookie minicamps that Alex and I go over as well. We also discuss the Steelers rookie minicamp quarterback situation.Alex and I go over the new contract numbers for quarterback Joshua Dobbs and provide a full salary cap update during this show as well.We then wrap up several loose ends late in this Friday show and then answer a few questions we have received recently from listeners.
(00:55) - Tyson Alualu's unexpected return makes it plain to see this unit will be better off next season. (07:35) - The tall task of replacing Bud Dupree will not be easy and the OLBs as a whole will be worse without two formidable starters. (12:30) - ILB is a tricky group to judge because do you compare it to what it should have been last year or what it ended up being with the injury suffered by Devin Bush. (19:00) - With fumbling of the Steve Nelson contract and uncertainty of James Pierre and Justin Layne, expect the CBs to be worse off next year. (25:05) - The safety group should be okay for next year with both starters returning.
3/24/2021Today on The Terrible Take, Alex Kozora discusses how the 2021 offseason will include a make or break summer for third-year Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Justin Layne.

If you know how nerdy my husband is, you would know why I titled this episode "The Return of Justin Layne." We talk about so many things in this episode---mostly a recap of 2020 but also about how we both processed the craziness in different ways. Justin and I open up about our goals and how we want to grow in 2021. We also talk about health, body image, and the importance of identifying insecurities. We also get a tad mushy toward the end... sorry in advance... what can I say? I love the guy! P.S. I would love to hear your thoughts about the Podcast. Wait til you hear about our NFL ring ceremony concept...Jonah is back in from his Fresh year of college and contributes in a big way. Maria can best be described as mildly bemused and tolerant as the guys propose the following:1) What would you do if you had the Stanley Cup for a day?2) A total reimagining of the NFL Super Bowl ring ceremony. What if NFL Super Bowl rings were turned over every year like the Stanley Cup? 50 yard line, previous winners line up across from new winners and (Benny Hill theme starts playing) each player has to find another one to wear his ring.Would there be Red Carpet event fan overlap for the Super Bowl if there was a week long leadup with players discussing the rings, their potential outfits for the ceremony and who their potential targets might be?If this sounds to you like it might be a terrible idea, maybe you need to ask yourself this question: “If Elvis Grbac, 1994 Michigan Wolverines starting QB, thinks its a great idea...is it possible that maybe I’m the one missing the point?”*If you are an NFL athlete or know an NFL athlete, please explain to us why or how you think this will be successful and who to contact to make it work.*To date, Elvis Grbac is definitely unaware of this idea and may or may not think it’s a good idea. Please visit us at https://thetragedyacademy.com On social media, you can find us at @thetragedyacademypodcast on Instagram, The Tragedy Academy Podcast on Facebook, and @tragedy_academy on Twitter. When Joe Haden arrived in Pittsburgh after his divorce with the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers cornerbacks were getting victimized. But Mike Hilton arrived as an undrafted free agent and the team selected third rounders Cam Sutton and Justin Layne. When Steven Nelson showed up as a free agent last season, the unit was completely transformed. With all of this talent, the Steelers are going to have tough decisions to make. The same goes for a pretty young and promising crew at wide receiver. That leads to the topic of discussion for Beck In Black. 1/6/2020Season 10, Episode 65 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can and in this Monday show, Alex Kozora and I start by going over what all transpired during the Wildcard games over the weekend and if there was anything to learned from them.Has quarterback Tom Brady now played his final game for the New England Patriots. We discuss his situation as well as what the Patriots need to do to get back to the top should Brady return. The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly hired Mike McCarthy to be their new head coach so Alex and I briefly discuss that news and how the Cleveland Browns may have messed up by missing out on him.We talk about the ability of a quarterback in the NFL to extend a play and the value of that and if that value is seemingly growing across the league. We also discuss a quarterbacks ability to run and the value of that in today’s NFL.After talking some about how well a few team’s ran the football over the weekend, Alex and I discuss the value of a good running game. We also recap the Steelers current situation at the running back position and go over how the level of need at that position this offseason in regard to the draft. How did the Steelers 2019 draft class do this past season? Alex and I spend a good 30 minutes discussing every player selected and reviewing their rookie seasons from top to bottom. This means quite a bit of talk about inside linebacker Devin Bush, wide receiver Diontae Johnson, cornerback Justin Layne, running back Benny Snell Jr. and defensive end Isaiah Buggs.Alex and I finally close out this Monday show by answering several email questions we received from listeners. As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here in this post. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to call or email with questions or comments and please pass us along to your friends!

Michigan State CB Justin Layne took time out of his preparation for the 2019 NFL Draft to talk with Connor Livesay. When Sports Talk Line's NFL Draft expert Connor Livesay first wrote about this prospect he had this to say: "Length, length, and more length. Justin Layne fits the NFL CB prototype to the “T” due to his long arms, height, and athletic profile. " - Connor Livesay That is what you want to see if your team has CB at the top of their need list and are holding some draft picks. CB's with these metrics are the new star on the Christmas tree and Layne is a fun guy to watch in the process. "Showing the coaches how I can move at my size ... it was a pretty good day" – CB Justin Layne on his pro-day performance Justin shares his position switch to CB due to injury and his playful run in practice to shut down a teammate that led to his first pick six and that is just the start of the great stories and insight you get when Connor and Justing get to yakking. Two football guys just having fun. "I feel like every year I progress .... I am going to come to practice and give it my all. That's what you get with Justin Layne." - Justin Layne on what an NFL team will get when they take him in the NFL Draft. Livesay keeps it real, puts things in perspective and gives you an “up close” picture of a “top NFL Draft Prospect” for 2019.STL NFL Draft Talk with CB Justin Layne SportsTalkLine Podcast Connor Livesay Check back for more conversations from the SportsTalkLine.com network. #JustinLayne #NFL #NFLDraft #ConnorLivesay

Before discussing some better than expected performances, particularly at safety, a few news items jumped out in the news today as the Seahawks reportedly met with Kyler Murray at the combine. Rob Staton from seahawksdraftblog.com is back on the show to remind us why that was a smart move even with Russell Wilson locked in at quarterback. Wilson is going into his final year and Joel Corry said on KJR Monday that Russell's contract will need to start around $35 million per year. The Seahawks also announced that they've placed the franchise tag on Frank Clark ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Jachai Polite reportedly did not interview well, but Rob thinks the reports could be based on Polite reaction following his talks with teams. However, scouts are calling him on bailing on the workouts and that could be what causes his stock to tumble a bit. There were a number of safeties that improved their stock in a class that was not expected to be as athletic as they proved to be on the final day of the NFL Scouting Combine. There were three safeties that ran in the 4.3s or better. The fastest player of the weekend was a safety who ran 4.29. Juan Thornhill had an impressive 44-inch vertical to go along with his 4.4 speed. Rob says there's one safety to look at as a possible safety to cornerback convert, similar to Tre Flowers last year for Seattle and that's USC safety Marvell Tell. Taylor Rapp of Washington had an impressive day, topping the field in the short shuttle, a drill that measures short-area quickness. Among the cornerbacks, there were five who tested very well and also fit the Seahawks profile: Mike Jackson, Miami; Isaiah Johnson, Houston; Lonnie Johnson, Kentucky; Justin Layne, Michigan State, and Ken Webster of Mississippi St. Of all those players, Rob says Lonnie Johnson would be the player most likely still around in the range that Seattle may be interested in taking a corner. The others could be going in the first two rounds of the draft. Rob offers some final thoughts on the class as a whole and the guys discuss where Seattle may be most likely to go while trying to project 2-3 years out. One of our listeners on YouTube says Khalil Hodge is a Seahawks linebacker and Rob says there is a lot to like about him and could be a potential late-round prospect for Seattle. Readyforthedraft.com's Gregg Schutze shares his passion for the NFL draft and takes you on a journey leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft. Episode 13 kicks off with Gregg taking a look at Duke's Daniel Jones. Is he a sure-fire 1st Round pick in 2019? Should he come back for his senior season? Another year under head coach David Cutcliffe saw the Manning brothers become a more complete prospect. It may behoove Jones to do the same. Gregg also looks at players flying under the radar. Trayveon Williams and Darrell Henderson are putting up huge stats, but aren't getting the notoriety they deserve, while Ryquell Armstead and Karan Higdon lead the charge for seniors in the backfield. Andy Isabella is a viable possession WR while Preston Williams, Antoine Wesley and Jonathan Duhart can be weapons on the outside. TE Donald Parham of Stetson could be the sleeper of this year's draft while Max Scharping and Andre Dillard are sneaky good OT's up front. Jaylon Ferguson is closing in on Terrell Suggs' sack record while Oshane Ximines is putting up big stats, but isn't a name many are familiar with yet. Gerald Willis has emerged along the interior defensively whle Cortez Broughton has finally put it all together. Daniel Wise and Chris Slayton will be nice interior players, while Kingsley Keke looks more and more like a five-technique in a 34 defense. In the New NFL, a LB has to be able to run. E.J. Ejiya, Ulysees Gilbert III, Chase Hansen, Germaine Pratt and Terrill Hanks fit that mold, while Khalil Hodge and Ben Burr-Kirven are tackling machines inside. Looking for a big CB? You're in luck as Rock Ya-Sin Derrick Baity, Jamal Peters and Justin Layne all have tremendous length and have all proven to have the ball skills needed to succeed at the next level. And at Safety, we know that Deionte Thompson, Johnathan Abram, Taylor Rapp and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson are the top safeties in this year's draft class, but Cedarius Rookard and Darnell Savage, Jr. can make plays too. And if you're looking for FCS prospects, be sure to watch for WR Keelan Doss, RB Ryan Fulse, DE Derick Roberson, DT's Isaiah Mack and Sterling Shippy, LB Sterling Sheffield and CB's Jimmy Moreland and Nasir Adderley.

Sandwiched between those linebacker picks is another player in the middle of the defense with special teams applicability- Sheldrick Redwine, Miami.
