I had a great time with Jer Rivera, someone I've known since Colorow Elementary School (named after a Ute Indian Chief who had been born Comanche) in Jefferson, County, Littleton, Colorado, our home state and home town . Jer and I reconnected when I was in the Navy in Hawai'i, where I lived and went to college for 4 years while active duty in the Navy. Jer was also in college at the time at HPU after a stint in Boulder. I ran into him Fall 1995 on a Friday night at Hope Chapel Kaneohe. It was a short drive for him living in Lanikai, a longer drive for me living near Wahiawa, on the Wheeler Army Airfield between Schofield Barracks and Mililani. Jer went back to the Catholic faith of his youth later after several years in Protestant ministry as an adult. Ten years ago, he founded Little j Marketing Company based in Englewood, Colorado. He does brand creation and management. Inspired by the deep well of his historic, Christian faith, Mr. Rivera serves his clients with everything he's got. THE MOMENT The esteemed Higa family was such a significant part of my life in Japan. I am very excited and honored to have Howard Higa as my guest over FaceTime from Honolulu, Hawaii. Howard was born in Wahiawa on Oahu, and when he was 12, his family moved to Japan, where he attended the ASIJ. He went to college in Missouri and then served in the US Navy as a public affairs officer during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Iwo Jima. Although he wanted to pursue a career in folk music, Howard chose to study business in college. Amidst his studies, Howard successfully ran his first company selling stone lanterns. His aspirations led him to the importing/trading business specializing in fur coats and golf gear to candies and macadamia nuts. Among the vast array of companies, Howard shares how he established Honolulu Cellular, one of the first mobile carriers in the US. He is also well known in Hawaii as the owner of The Cab, the biggest taxi company. The Cab provided for many immigrant families, and their children thrived in successful careers. Howard recently had an epiphany while on a TV show and realized his life's purpose; his AH-HA moment. We are all driven towards financial success, but what is it all for? Paying it forward by assisting people in getting their life dreams: at age 78, Howard is finally coming to terms with this blessed calling, or as his Japanese mentor put it, "ikigai."

For the complete town and country experience on Oahu, grab a rental and make tracks for Haleiwa, the North Shore gateway. Getting there is half the fun, because you have two wildly distinct choices. I opted to meander back to Honolulu Airport, at the end of my trip, along the lush Windward Coast, through sleepy hamlets with roadside stands selling succulent mangoes, bright tropical pareu, fresh corn, and pond-raised prawns. The route offers the most arresting vistas of those emerald-hued volcanic ranges, with their strikingly corrugated folds of Jurassic Park fame. Huddled at its base is the famed movie-set location of Kualoa Ranch. But when you’re first heading to the North Shore, take the Central Oahu route via H2. The red-earthed heart of the island is a broad and fertile valley, where pineapple and sugar-canes march their way to the Waianae Mountains. An hour out of Honolulu and just past Wahiawa, the route becomes the Kamehameha Highway (H99) which is where I made my first stop. How could you possibly pass the Dole Pineapple Plantation and the delectable temptation of devouring a scoop or two of Dole Whip? This pineapple-infused soft-serve delight is just the first of many signature tastes that radiantly embodies the sensory allure of North Oahu. I dropped by early morning, sans the crowds, downing my Dole Whip while gazing at the Pineapple Express locomotive, which heartily blew its whistle to herald the start of the new day’s service. It’s just 10 minutes drive from Dole Plantation to Haleiwa, Hawaii's surf city. This quaint and rustic sugar-plantation town now enjoys historic protection. Its ensemble of faded clapboard stores, strung around a picturesque harbour, sets the stage for the surfie crowd, who flock here from all over the planet. Haleiwa is their holy-grail, a surf mecca, groaning with raffishly charming roadside surfie stores, boutique galleries and eateries. But the most compelling mercantile landmark would have to be Surf N Sea, where its vintage architecture pays homage to its legacy. Originally, the century-old beachfront building was a train station with accommodation upstairs. The Haleiwa Hotel was Hawaii’s first destination resort, before morphing into a general store after World War II. Since 1965, it’s been home to Surf N Sea, Hawaii’s oldest surf and dive shop. Joe Green has been the ebullient owner for the past 35 years and warmly welcomed me into his part-shop, part-ocean sports shrine, brimming with over 300 surfboards and every imaginable surf brand. Feasting my eyes on all of the surf memorabilia, it’s no wonder many surfies consider this place museum-worthy. The rustic ceilings and walls hold Green's personal collection of vintage surfboards, including the Duke's final fibreglass board from 1968. Joe is also a master ukulele-maker, all handmade from 100% recycled wood, including mango, koa and opuma. Joe salvaged and reshaped ipe wood from the building’s floors, which he has repurposed into the fret board bridges adorning all of his ukuleles. Impeccably designed, they’re an incomparable buy – an authentic slice of Haleiwa to take home. Joe patiently tried to teach me how to play the ukulele – with mixed results. More iconic North Shore tastes were calling, and just down the road from Surf N Sea is Matsumoto Shave Ice’s original store in Haleiwa. Established in 1951, the pioneers of Hawaiian snow cones were doing a roaring trade when I lined up for my rainbow-striped offering of sweet syrup infused shave ice. Then there’s Ted’s Bakery, another North Shore legend, where you’ll swoon over their insatiable chocolate haupia pie. It is chocolaty, coconutty and encrusted with macadamias. What a knock-out! And you’ll want to stake out the hole in the wall bakery in the middle of a field, just west of Haleiwa. Paalaa Kai bakery is a 40 year old institution beloved for its freshly-made snow puffies, flaky and buttery pastries, stuffed with cold, creamy custard and topped with swirls of...
Today we will continue our Sustainable Leaders series and have a Talk Story with Phil Acosta, the Executive Director at Alea Bridge as we zero in on the Homeless Epidemic here in Hawaii. We plan to understand the Homeless situation, learn about what’s working and how we can solve some of these homeless hurdles. Some may be wondering how this is related to sustainability, well for those of you who don’t know, one of Hawaii’s sustainable sectors is Housing, Affordable Housing at that. The Homeless struggles we face as a state is something we must address for Hawaii’s Future and its people. Phil is currently the Executive Director of ALEA Bridge, an emerging Non-Profit agency providing homeless services on Oahu. Along with his sister and 2 brothers, they have built up the organization from 2 unpaid volunteers 3 years ago, now with an Operations staff of 13, a Leadership Team of 20, and a volunteer base of over 200 people. They are now looking to expand their Outreach services and Housing programs to reach more people, especially in rural areas that have historically been under-served for many years. One of their big initiatives is the Wahiawa HoM Program, a collaborative, community-based initiative with a focus on Central Oahu, North Shore, and portions of Koolauloa, and Leeward Oahu, to address the homeless, health, and housing issues that is impacting the residents of these communities. Phil was an IT Project Manager for several years prior to ALEA Bridge, working on various enterprise projects with the State Department of Human Services and the US Department of Defense. Prior to that, he spent 10 years with the Department of Education. He and his wife just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. They have 15-year old twin girls. One will be an incoming Senior at Mid-Pacific Institute, and another who is gearing up for college! Phil and his family work tirelessly, day-in and day-out to provide amazing services for those without a home. Their big hearts touch the lives of those who lose hope and with that love, Phil and his team are able to save people at their bottoms and bring them back to a place they can call home. Wow. This is one of those podcast conversations where I want to say: just listen. Listen. For those who need more cajoling,.....I'll share about it! Linda Inlay is an educator who spent a career bringing a technique of culture building called "Awakening Wisdom" to schools. She shares an incredible experience about building a culture based on responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, and responsiveness in schools.I am inspired by the hope that she embodies for bringing change to our public schools and helping students and teachers and parents to gestate in environments that are designed to create natural and relaxed growth and development that starts with an assumption of acceptance. As a builder of new culture with the My Love Bomb Program and a witness to seeing what happens when you intentionally create an environment of unconditional loving acceptance, I am very excited to think that her work could permeate the public domain. If you are someone who works with teams in education, in business, or in your service work, this content can inspire you towards the system of culture that you build within yourself and those you are working with.Together we make the worldview change from fear to love. Inside of ourselves, and within our communities. More on the amazing Linda: Linda began her career as an educator at Our Lady of Sorrows School in Wahiawa, Hawaii, where she worked for fifteen years. There she collaborated with the founders of the Ho`?la Educational Philosophy, a combination of Adlerian principles and Carl Roger’s self-actualization theory. Ho`?la in Hawaiian means, “awakening of the self.” Today this way of organizing a school is called “Awakening wisdom.” This program emphasized the core values of responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, and responsiveness to be modeled by the adults in order to foster these same values in the students. In 1988 Linda left Hawaii for California, entering the public school system and serving for eighteen years as the principal of River School in Napa County, where she introduced Awakening Wisdom. She taught parenting classes to bring home and school culture together, and during her tenure, River School received two California Distinguished School Awards, the Promising Practices Award and National School of Character Award from the Character Education Partnership, and the California School Board Association’s Golden Bell Award. In 2012 River School also became a New Tech Network School where project-based learning is infused with technology as an engaging and effective methodology for teaching and learning. Linda has presented at numerous conferences: National Middle School Association, Character Education Partnership, California Middle School Association, National Charter Schools, California Charter Schools Association, North Coast Educational Summit. She has authored four articles published in ASCD’s Educational Leadership. Her thesis, Ho`?la School The Transformation of Character Through the Implicit Curriculum, continues to be used a training guide for teachers at schools. Her first journal article, “Creating a Culture of Respect Through the Implicit Curriculum”, was published in the January 2016 issue of Middle School Journal. You can find her here:www.LindaInlay.comTo get involved in "Village Napa" to help support teen mental and emotional health:https://www.facebook.com/villagenapa/?fref=ts

He did it all very affordable and used local resources. For obvious monetary reasons, he couldn't just go out and buy all new parts for the transformation.
