In this episode of the Confidently Balance Your Hormones podcast, Dee Davidson, FDN-P talks about the controversial topic of food sensitivity testing. Many people turn to these tests seeking answers to chronic health issues like bloating, fatigue, and skin conditions, but is food sensitivity testing the best place to start? We break down:When food sensitivity testing is helpful: Situations where testing provides valuable insights for complex cases. When it can hurt: The pitfalls of overly restrictive diets, potential mental health impacts, and why focusing solely on sensitivities doesn't address the root cause. Why gut health is key: How addressing gut dysfunction often resolves food sensitivities without needing to avoid dozens of foods. What type of testing is accurate: Why we prefer the Zoomer panel and how it compares to other testing methods.A better approach: Building a strong foundation of health, starting with digestion, stress management, and holistic practices to support your body's healing.Resources to Take the Next Step

I recently had a new client ask about food sensitivity testing and we thought this would make a great podcast episode! What is the difference between food sensitivities, food intolerances, and food allergies? Should everyone get a food sensitivity test? Are there more reputable ones than others? In today's episode, we're going to answer all of these questions and more! For quick reference, below we will explain the differences: Food Intolerances – Completely isolated to the digestive tract. The body doesn't have the necessary enzymes needed to break down a food. I.e. lactose intolerance (inadequate lactase enzyme). Food Allergy: A food allergy is an IgE immune reaction to food. In other words, your body's immune system identifies a specific food as an invader and reacts accordingly by producing antibodies to protect you. These are quick onset reactions (think seconds to hours). They are isolated to the skin, airways, and GI tract- hives, throat closing, difficulty breathing, swollen tongue, etc. There are 8 common allergens: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soy. Food Sensitivities: Food sensitivities are more of a chronic, low-grade sign of inflammation. They are caused by immune-mediated reactions called mediators (histamines, cytokines, prostaglandins). They are also an immune based reaction, but unlike allergies, they can happen within 45 minutes to 3 days. Because of this, it can be pretty difficult to pinpoint. Examples of symptoms of a food sensitivity can include anything from migraines, bloating, digestive symptoms, brain fog, skin issues, digestive issues, sinus issues, etc. Definitely listen in as we explain some of the nuances of the differences and use easily understandable analogies around these topics. My guest, Daina Rasutis, is a a Nutrition Therapist Master. Looking for a way to heal her gut, her chronic acne, and increasing fatigue, she turned to a plant based diet. To start, things seemed to be going well. Things improved but she never returned to health. In fact, over time, she felt worse and her symptoms returned. We discussed the importance of protein--specifically animal protein--as we age. It benefits the gut, our muscles, immunity, and more. For those who have concerns about how animals are processed, an egg from a humane farm fed organic food to supplement their grazing, is the answer.Key Points Discussed:Daina's Background: From civil environmental engineering to sustainable food systems and eventually finding her passion in nutrition therapy.Vegan Journey: How going vegan initially improved Dena's chronic conditions like acne but later led to energy depletion and gut issues.Protein Importance: The critical role animal proteins play in maintaining gut health versus relying heavily on supplements or processed foods.Gut Health Focus: Why as we age, especially for women over 50, it becomes essential to prioritize gut health through proper nutrition including adequate protein intake.Muscle Maintenance: The significance of preventing muscle loss by ensuring enough dietary protein paired with resistance training as one ages.Digestive Changes with Ageing: Understanding that our body produces fewer enzymes and stomach acid as we get older which affects digestion.Insights Shared:Transitioning from Veganism:Dena discusses how she gradually introduced eggs then fish back into her diet after realizing plant-based eating was not supporting her well-being effectively.Bone Broth Benefits:Although not complete in amino acids profile compared to other animal products, bone broth is beneficial for skin, bones, and particularly soothing for the gut lining during healing processes.Common Misconceptions:Addressing common misunderstandings about heartburn relief methods such as antacids which can lead to more harm than good by reducing crucial stomach acid production needed for immune defense against pathogens.Food Sensitivity Testing & Stool Analysis:Highlighted importance of identifying individual food sensitivities through testing rather than elimination diets alone; also understanding one's microbiome state via stool tests.Headaches & Gut Connection:Discusses how chronic headaches can often be linked back to gut issues—whether it's due to food sensitivities or poor digestion leading systemic reactions within the body. Conclusion:This episode challenges listeners who are considering or currently practicing veganism while emphasizing the necessity of listening closely to their bodies' needs—especially regarding protein consumption—and adjusting their diets accordingly as they age. Before you buy food sensitivity testing, you need to hear this because so many people are harmed by these tests. For one thing, food sensitivity testing is touted as a miracle, cure-all answer for skin rashes. So when you take the test, cut out the foods, and your rash is still flaring up — it can leave you feeling really lost and even hopeless that things will ever change. AND for many, food sensitivity tests trigger food fear that drives unnecessary diet restrictions that do more harm than good negatively impacting not just your physical health, but also your mental well-being. That's not a great place to be. And then there's the fact that these tests are expensive. So, if you fork out the money for one of these food sensitivity tests, and you don't see the results you were hoping for, now you're out of hope and you're out a serious bit of money too which could have been better spent on other tests which are more helpful. Especially since food sensitivity testing CAN'T identify root cause problems triggering skin rashes or flare-ups. That's why today, we're diving into food sensitivity, what results mean for your rash, and asking the big question, “Does food sensitivity testing work?” And because it's so common to have low stomach acid when you struggle with skin rashes – especially if you suspect that your rash is triggered by the foods you eat — be sure to try my completely free DIY Low Stomach Acid Test before you do anything else. This simple at-home test can help put you on the right track! In This Episode: What's a Food Allergy Vs Food Sensitivity Vs Intolerance? What exactly is food sensitivity testing, anyway? Leaky gut + your skin rash: What's the connection? How to reintroduce a food after an elimination diet What I recommend instead of food sensitivity testing Quotes “The problem is that food sensitivity tests are not accurate. There's little evidence to support the idea that IgG testing can uncover food sensitivities. In fact, both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology warn against using food sensitivity tests as diagnostic tools.” “Food sensitivity testing results are highly changeable depending on your current diet. So it's not uncommon to see all of your favorite foods that you eat daily show up as moderate or even high food sensitivities leading you to think that they are now bad for you.”

Most doctors ignore the importance that food plays in the development of acid reflux disease (heartburn/GERD), and are quick to prescribe anti acid medications. This approach is flawed. Not only do these medications not fix the origin of the problem, they induce several vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It's no coincidence that both Rebecca and I use a Food Sensitivity Test with every client as it helps identify symptom triggers for a range of conditions, including skin problems like eczema and acne, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, headaches, joint pain, weight gain and even behavioural concerns like brain fog, insomnia, and low energy levels. In this episode, we chat about: Why we choose this particular test over other tests and why it's so important to identify the causes of inflammation? What areas do we see the best results in? Why compliance with this test is easier for clients versus an elimination or even a FODMAP diet? If you just can't pinpoint what it is that's triggering your symptoms, then you can't miss this episode!
Today Blu interviews Drew Mulvey MS, CDN, CNS, CLT, PNL1, CISN. Drew graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport with a Master of Science in Human Nutrition in 2018 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 2012. She is currently certified by the state of Connecticut as a Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist as well as a Board-Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Leap Therapist, Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Integrative Sports Nutritionist, and has her own practice Redeeming Life Nutrition, LLC. Drew has gained her nutrition experience working in several arenas including weight loss clinics, personal training, interning under a naturopathic doctor, through her personal practice, and a competitive residency program under a functional medicine nutritionist. She prides herself in helping active women transform their mindsets and beliefs around food, find their true selves, and empower them to ignite their true athletic potential. Her passion stems from my struggles with disordered eating and multiple health battles during my teens, such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmunity, and bulimia. In her twenties, from overactivity and disordered eating patterns known as orthorexia, she developed the Female Athlete Triad, a complex stemming from low energy intake and leading to a loss of menses and decreased bone density. All these significantly impacted on her athletic career and could have all been avoided. She decided to enroll in her Master of Nutrition program so that her eyes were open to other avenues such as Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Nutrition, Supplementation, Food Sensitivity Testing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Mindset Reformation. By incorporating these principles, entering a 12-step program known as Celebrate Recovery, and reshaping her relationship with food and herself; she was able to break the chains of disordered eating and regain her athletic ability back. Today, she has now found a deep passion for endurance sports and has an Ironman 70.3 set in her future endeavors. Her goal is to get to the root cause of the problem spiritually, emotionally, and physically to create new foundations, leading these women to transformation and success in their athletic careers and their lives. It is an incredibly individualized approach that captures their strengths and uses them to "break the cycle."

Hey friend,Have you ever gotten a moderate results on a food sensitivity test? What do you do you with it? Do you avoid the food? Limit it? Will you ever be able to eat that food again?Hint: the answer has something to do with leaky gut!
Have you ever experienced unpleasant symptoms after eating certain foods, including sneezing, rashes, joint pain, bloating and diarrhoea? If so, then you might be wondering what is causing it.A food sensitivity reaction is typically caused by an imbalance in the gut, which affects the immune system. Increased intestinal permeability, referred to as ‘leaky gut syndrome', is often a culprit. Food sensitivities can present in several ways, from dizziness, anxiety, headaches, difficulty sleeping, ear infections, fatigue, acne, and irritable bowel, to name a few. An elimination diet is an effective way to identify which foods are causing the sensitivities by removing a food type for at least a month and then reintroducing foods to see if symptoms arise again. A food sensitivity test is a quick, easy and accurate way of identifying personal trigger foods, which can help optimise your food habits and guide an elimination diet to help relieve chronic symptoms.Alternatively, the more advanced Cyrex array tests address a more extensive range of issues concerning food sensitivities. The Cyrex panels detect both IgG and IgA antibodies to evaluate the immune reactions to food in its raw and cooked form, common food combinations, and reactivity to gum molecules and binding isolates. In today's episode, you will find out more about food sensitivities and how taking a food sensitivity test might be beneficial:Highlights from today's episode include:The difference between food intolerance, allergy and sensitivity. IgG antibodies to food and how it affects your health. Symptoms of food sensitivities including fatigue, migraines, acne, and digestive issues such as bloating and constipation. How to improve food sensitivities with diet and lifestyle. Why stool testing in combination with food sensitivity testing can provide deeper insight. Food sensitivities can create inflammation and contribute to symptoms of a variety of diseases. Food sensitivity testing measures our immune response to some of the most common foods known to trigger these reactions. This week on FUELED, I talk more about this approach, and chat with a client about her experience. We rely on modern medicine to help us find and treat our ailments. We want answers. Laboratory testing is one-way conventional practitioners can help diagnose and treat ailments. But what if conventional testing shows your levels are normal? This is where specialty testing, such as Food Sensitivity Testing, can come into play. In today's episode, we are talking about: Is all laboratory testing regulated? Are the results accurate? Will a food sensitivity test tell me what is causing the problem? If you want to know what these tests can and can't tell you and what labs and methodologies to use and which to avoid be sure to listen to parts 1 and 2. In this episode I am answering questions from our Facebook group that cover when to do an elimination diet vs. getting testing, when to see an allergist for testing vs. more functional medicine sensitivity testing, what symptoms like bloating may be telling you (hint: that can be a food sensitivity but can be a whole lot of other things too and so other testing or strategies may be better), when you should retest and much more! Currently there is a wide array of labs, methodologies and even at home tests you can order and this episode will help you know what's accurate and what's not, if a finger stick vs. a blood draw is a good at home option and recap what types of food reactions you won't see on a food sensitivity test and some easy things you can do to remedy those. I get asked this question daily, both in my practice and in my online community. It's a great question because it seems like the perfect answer to alleviate digestive symptoms, skin troubles, low energy, blood sugar and hormone problems right? Just take a test and tell me what to eat! I get it and they can be really helpful BUT there are a ton of problems with these tests. You need to know what type of reaction you're actually testing (allergy vs. sensitivity), the labs need to be using the proper methodology (hint: most of them are not), they can't test for every type of food reaction (i.e.bloating can be caused by a gut infection, low HCL or a food sensitivity and only one of those will show up on a test) AND you need to understand where food sensitivities fit in your overall treatment plan. Food Issues do cause a host of inflammatory issues but they are often a symptom and not a root cause so just “getting your food sensitivities” checked and get off that food forever isn't usually the best approach. I will tell you all about why in this 3 part series! To work with Dr Brooke click here and if you loved this episode please leave a review! Have you personally or known of someone who has taken a food sensitivity test? And have you ever noticed that overtime, for many people, the results dissipate? That they may even cause anxiety or worry about the foods they are intolerant to? Today, I want to discuss why I don't like nor recommend food sensitivity testing. This is definitely a tricky subject. What I'm not trying to do in this episode is take away your body autonomy. If they have worked for you. Or if you have genuine food intolerances, I'm not saying that is wrong. You are going to have to be the ultimate decision maker. You are the expert of your own body! Many people will follow these "elimination diets" much longer than necessary, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and harm their relationship with food. At some point in your Hashimoto's journey, you may have heard about a food allergy test. You might be wondering if this is worth the time and money to get tested. A food allergy test can be a helpful tool to diagnose your allergies, but it's not always the best option. For example, if you have Hashimoto's disease and are feeling exhausted after eating certain foods, an elimination diet may give you more information about which food is the culprit. In today's episode I will be discussing food sensitivity testing vs elimination diet. I'll review what each of them are, the pros and cons of each, which one you should do first, next steps on your symptom free lifestyle, tips on how to make food sensitivity eating easier, and some resources to help along the way.

Food sensitivities affect an estimated 25% of us, with symptoms ranging from headaches to hives and grogginess to GI issues. We often don't realize the chronic symptoms we're experiencing are caused by the foods we eat. But now, food sensitivity tests are making it easier than ever to identify trigger foods that leave us feeling less than optimal. Food sensitivity expert Susan Linke, MS, RD joins me to share everything you need to know about these tests, from how to get tested to how to interpret the results.LINKS ●Food Reactivity Testing | MRT [Mediator Release Testing] + LEAP therapy: www.nowleap.com●Susan Linke, RD | www.susanlinke.com●Ochsner Fitness Center RD Alexis Weilbaecher [food sensitivities]: nutrition@ochsner.org
Food sensitivity testing is a controversial topic. Even among our team here at Gene Food there is disagreement, with some doubting the science behind the standard IgG panels and others swearing by them as an essential tool for healing autoimmune disease. However, debates notwithstanding, there can be no doubt that most IgG food tests on the market today register false positives with the result being overwhelmed consumers staring at a list of 20-30 foods that are now "off limits." Our guest today is hoping to help change all that by making food sensitivity testing more accurate. Joel Evans, M.D. is one of the leaders of the integrative health movement. He is a board certified OB/GYN and international lecturer, is the Founder and Director of The Center for Functional Medicine, where he practices integrative functional gynecology. Dr. Evans was honored to speak at the United Nations in March 2013 on the topic of Prenatal Origins of Violence, and he now serves as UN Representative and Chief Medical Advisor for OMAEP – World Organization of Prenatal Education Associations. In addition to his integrative practice, Dr. Evans serves as medical director for KBMO Diagnostics, a company that is producing the 2.0 version of IgG food sensitivity tests. KBMO has introduced new technology aimed at not only finding foods that register an IgG response, but that also cause inflammation which can damage gut health. In today's episode, we learn about the new scientific developments aimed at increasing the reliability of IgG tests, we discuss a promising study Dr. Evans did on patients with IBS, when gluten free diets aren't necessary, the health benefits of coffee, how food sensitivity can affect the development of our children and much more.
