DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA! We meet Deets (Adita) mother of the ship. She told us the low down on all the goings on and we met some segmenters who were thinking of leaving.
If the rise of Chief Data Officers (CDOs) within the public sector is any indication, we're currently witnessing a paradigm shift towards making data a fundamental cornerstone of government operations. What's more, as these agencies increasingly prioritize data, legislative acts like the Foundations of Evidence-Based Policymaking Act and the Open Data Act further underline the shift. In the quest for actionable insights from data, Adita Karkera, CDO at Deloitte Goverment, dives deep into the "so what" of data to spotlight the significance of ethically grounded AI, transparency in its applications, and the imperative for diversity in data teams. Tracing her journey from a database analyst to a pivotal, business-centric role, Adita underscores the essence of aligning data strategies with broader mission objectives. It's not just about collecting and analyzing data; it's about understanding its broader implications, the story it tells, and the impact it has on the people it serves.Three reasons you should listen to this episode:1. CDOs in the Public Sector: Understand the burgeoning role and significance of Chief Data Officers in governmental operations.2. The Universality of Data Literacy: Explore the significance of data literacy across organizations, how it's more than just for technical roles, and why CDOs are emphasizing its importance in developing a solid data culture and strategy for better outcomes.3. Ethics and Diversity in AI: Delve into the responsibilities of using AI in the public sector and the vital role of diversity, especially women, in the decision-making processes of data-driven solutions.ResourcesConnect with Adita on LinkedInEnjoyed this Episode?Be sure to follow us so you never miss an update. There's information about Planète Radio's ePOP video competition which you should all enter, great music, and of course, the new quiz question, too. Just click on the “Audio” arrow above and enjoy! Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday – here on our website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You'll hear the winner's names announced and the week's quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you've grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week. RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter. The deadline is tomorrow, 1 May – so get your video in today! Planète Radio is an RFI department that reaches out to remote populations around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, Planète Radio is holding a video competition on environmental issues. The theme of this year's competition is “Show how they feel”: You are to create a 3-minute video about climate change, the environment, pollution - told by the people it affects. Here's what Planète Radio says about the competition: “Environmental deterioration, climate change, pollution, everybody's talking about it. But amid articles, figures, and expert reports, what do we really know about the feelings of the people already impacted? The video clips produced by the ePOP community in more than 50 countries allow us to hear from those who never ask for anything yet have seen it all - those who are already living with these changes that deteriorate their quality of life.” Your project can be intergenerational: Get together with your grandfather, your aunt, someone older in your community and ask them how they feel about what is happening to their surroundings or to the place where they grew up. RFI's ePOP video awards shine a light on Africa's environmental crises Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. Gather the words of those around you who are confronting the environmental crisis in their daily lives, investing, researching, and questioning the urgency of deploying solutions to face it. Prizes for this year's competition include equipment grants from 1,000 to 4,500 euros, as well as ePOP promotion kits and other goodies. For competition guidelines and more information about the four different categories you can enter, click here. You can also write to us at english.service@rfi.fr if you need more help. This week's quiz: On 19 March, I asked you a question about Ukraine – specifically, about the Russians against the war. Earlier that week you listened to and read Jan van der Made's excellent article “Who are the Russians campaigning to stop Putin and help Ukraine?” Jan's interview was with Sergei Guriev, the founder of the True Russia Collective. I asked you about Mikhail Baryshnikov, a member of the collective. You were to do a bit of research on him, and tell me who he is, a bit of his story, his history. The answer is: Mikhail Baryshnikov was the preeminent ballet dancer in the '70s & '80s. Born in 1948 in Soviet-controlled Latvia, he was a member of the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, and made international headlines in 1974 while on tour with the Kirov in Canada, when he escaped his minders. All traveling Soviet artists were limited in their movements for exactly that reason: fear they would defect to the west. He was granted political asylum by the Canadian government. Baryshnikov then moved to the US and joined the American Ballet Theatre, then the New York City Ballet so that he could learn modern classical dance, which was not known in the Soviet Union. Baryshnikov then returned to the American Ballet Theatre, where he was Principal Dancer and later, Artistic Director. He has done some films, too. You know, sometimes it's good to be old – I got to see him dance. It was perfection. The winners are: Jobayada Aktar Jai, who's a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. There are two RFI Listeners Club members who won this week: Radhakrishna Pillai from Kerala State in India, and Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada. Rounding out the list are two RFI English listeners from Bangladesh: Tasmaul Housna Akhi from Naogaon, and Lutfor Rahaman from Bogura, who noted he is ill and asks for your healing thoughts. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “New York New York” by John Kander and Fred Ebb, performed by the Instrumental Big Band Orchestra; an excerpt from Sergei Rachmaninov's “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini”; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “I'm Gonna' Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” by Fats Waller, played by Stephanie Trick, and “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock, performed by Hancock on the piano, Freddie Hubbard on the cornet, bassist Ron Carter, and Tony Williams on the drums. Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... You have to listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, refer to Amanda Morrow's article to help you with the answers. You have until 23 May to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 28 May podcast. When you enter, be sure you send your postal address with your answer, and if you have one, your RFI Listeners Club membership number. RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter! Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. We're very proud that the winner in the ePOP 2020 RFI Club category went to an English language club – Adita Prithika's RFI Agnichiragu Phoenix Club in Tamil Nadu, India. Here's Adita's award-winning video. Please note that you do not have to be a member of an RFI English Club to enter. Everyone is welcome! The deadline for entries is 1 May, so get to work! This week's quiz: On 5 March, we had an early tribute to International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year on 8 March – and to that end, the quiz was about the holiday. As I noted then, International Women's Day has a long history, with different countries proposing a Women's Day in the early 20th century. I asked you to do a little research and find out when the earliest version of Women's Day occurred, who organized it, and in which country. The answer is: According to the United Nations' article “Background: International Women's Day”, the earliest version of Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of New York, in New York City, on 28 February 1909. Then, at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference, the German delegates proposed an annual Women's Day which was adopted by various countries over the years. International Women's Day became a global holiday when it was added to the calendar of official United Nations Days in 1977. The winners are: RFI Listeners Club members Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria; Tasneem Saleh from Nilphamari, Bangladesh; Arne Timm from Harjumaa, Estonia; Radhakrishna Pillai N. from Kerala State in India, and RFI English listener Lata Khondaker from Bogura, Bangladesh. The epidemic of obese and overweight children in the US In the United States, around 18.5% of children ages 2-19 are considered obese. One in three children in the US is deemed to be overweight. Children with a body mass index-for age percentile higher than 95% are "affected by obesity" and "overweight" if the BMI-for-age percentile is more than 85% but less than 95%. Your pediatrician can measure your child's weight in terms of percentile, or you can use this chart to determine it for yourself. Genetics may play a role in obesity; however, genes account for less than 5% of cases of childhood obesity. 2 Children learn by modeling parents' and peers' preferences, intake, and willingness to try new foods. Availability of, and repeated exposure to, healthy foods is key to developing preferences and can overcome the dislike of foods. 3 Overweight and obese children are at a higher risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, and even cancer at a younger age. 4 Obesity also affects a child's mental health. Children who are obese may experience lower self-esteem. The three E's of addressing overweight and obesity in children are Environment, Exercise, and Eating. Reduce screen time and make physical activity a priority. Consider an extracurricular activity such as dance or martial arts, that requires a child to move their body more to address the environment and exercise. The more complicated aspect of overweight and obese children is what they eat. His other bands have included Common Rider and Classics Of Love. He is now working on a novel to be released sometime this year. Tim Stafford: is a Chicago writer, performer, husband, and Father. He can be seen regularly with the Chicago based The Encyclopedia Show. Larry Livermore: is the founder of Lookout Records. He has also written for Maximum Rock N Roll. He is also working on a book. And has a website with much writing: www.larrylivermore.com Joe Jacob: is a professional motion graphics animator living in Chicago. He also engages in various forms of writing, the results of which tend to toil in obscurity and fuel his narcissistic martyr complex. Bradley Adita: is a punk house survivor, juggler of miscellania, publisher of A Day In The Air zine, and "Head Butthead" at Pop Punk Dot Com. Matt Ellin: is the youngest writer we have had on this podcast, 13 Years Old! He discovered punk rock and its various offshoots a few years ago through exposure to The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, and it’s changed his life for better or worse. He immediately took to singing (And more recently playing bass) in bands. He listened to punk rock religiously and studied its stories. As a musician, He has no desire to be generic and he wants to do things in punk that haven’t been done. As a writer, he likes to bring new ideas and philosophies into the scene. Connor Kalista: was born and raised in Texas. After he finished school there and abroad, he lived in Chicago, where he worked in museums and made lots of theater. Mostly with the Neo-Futurists but also with Theater Oobleck, Plasticene and Schadenfreude. He now lives in Brooklyn where he works as a film and video editor and most recently completed work on Without Shepherds, a documentary about Pakistan that will premiere at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival. He is currently at work on a documentary about Somali pirates. He still makes theater and in 2011, he co-created and performed with the New York Neo Futurists in the Drama Desk nominated production, The Complete and Condensed Stage Directions on Eugene O’Neill, Volume One: Early Plays/Lost Plays. He still goes to lots of live shows and wishes he had more time to draw. Sonja Amazonka: Sonja always felt that there was something inherently wrong with the world, and was happy to discover likeminded people in the Belgrade punk scene when she was a teenager. Punk rock inspired her to try and understand society and the way in which people make it up in their heads, thus she became a social anthropologist. Sometimes, when she’s not too busy writing academic papers, she writes short fiction. She is certain that her voice sounds more nasal when she’s speaking English.
