“Look at any photo from a moment of supposed zeitgeist in American history, and it will be clear that not everyone in that moment represented the cutting-edge of culture.” –Rolf Potts In this essay episode of Deviate, Rolf talks about why he enjoys listening to Rob Harvilla’s podcast 60 Songs That Explain the ’90s at double-speed, but that he’s disappointed Rob has never alluded to Rolf’s own 1990s grunge band, Swizzlefish (1:45); Rolf describes his move from Kansas to the Pacific Northwest in the year 1990, at a very specific moment in America’s cultural zeitgeist (10:30); the origins of Swizzlefish, and how its formation with Rolf’s friends Ryan and Steve was compromised by the fact that Rolf and Steve were in no way musical virtuosos (18:30); the circumstances of the first Swizzlefish live show, and how it caused an immediate controversy on Rolf’s small Christian college campus (30:00); what Portland’s indie-rock scene was like in early 1993, and what kinds of bands Rolf and his friends saw there (35:00); how the second Swizzlefish concert resulted in the band getting banned from playing on its own college campus (42:00); Swizzlefish’s spring 1993 performance at Portland’s X-Ray Cafe, and how the middle-class normalcy of its fans evoked something true about grunge music (49:00); Rolf’s eventual move to Seattle to work as a landscaper, his experiences at a 1993 Nirvana show there, and the curiously enduring legacy of Swizzlefish more than 30 years later (57:30); and Rolf talks to music journalist Rob Harvilla about Rolf’s brief appearance in the 1992 horror movie Dr. Giggles, their respective experiences with 1990s music, and whether or not Kurt Cobain would have liked them (1:06:25). The 1993 Swizzlefish album Big Time Loser is available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She's the name behind Career Woman, that's currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast. All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star's daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite.I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can't get any cooler than that.To learn more about Melody's music search out Career Woman on all the socials or through Lauren Records.

Abandoning their D.I.Y. roots in San Francisco to go global with their major label debut, Green Day welded megaton bomb pop-hooks to the scrappy queer punk of 924 Gilman Street to bring raucous juvenilia to the masses on DOOKIE. Fun at a time when the rock landscape was dominated by dour and serious arena-grunge, Green Day went from slumming it in squats to being the biggest band in America in just one album. This record was chosen by this week's guest Krystal Evans, a dry dark American stand-up living in Edinburgh who has appeared on BBC Scotland and hosted the now-defunct Roseanne podcast, Creamed Corn at the Lunchbox. This episode on Enjoy An Album, Christopher and Liam listened to DOOKIE and now they're going to talk about everything from barbeque food to George W Bush. All that plus Secret Posho, Unhinged YouTube Comment of the Week, and Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo. Enjoy! Where to begin... vocalist for THE VSS / ANGEL HAIR / YEAR FUTURE etc. founder of the GSL label and Bottlenekk distribution as well as a graphic designer, art director for Sargent House and prolific digital collage artist. In 1997 The VSS travelled around Europe on the 'Nervous Circuits' tour. Seeing them play here was a total eye opener for me as a teenager. I was interested to know his perspective on touring the UK at that time and seeing the bands here like BOB TILTON / BABY HARP SEAL / STALINGRAD / HARD TO SWALLOW / KITO / EBOLA & RED MONKEY. This is the focus of the first bit of talk before a live VSS track leading into a section about ANGEL HAIR & GRAVITY records. There's a great chunk on this with lots of stories and facts I'd never heard before. The ANGEL HAIR track leads into more philosophical reflections on punk/hardcore & culture. It's a cool wide ranging talk with an awesome figure in the underground scene of the past 30 years. The first day of the year is always the final day of our interview marathon and just like last year we like to go out on a bang! And just like last year we want to end with an interview partner who would be much too humble to accept his importance: Noah Landis who played a huge part in the Gilman Street scene in the 80s, when bands like Samiam, Green Day and his most famous one - Neurosis - shared the stage very frequently. Noah has a new project, Tension Span, which we already reviewed here, and thus we had a lot to talk about! With 91 minutes this is one of our longest interviews ever, this is an interview for the ages. Noah's new band is mighty interesting and so we focused on its songs somewhere between Industrial, Noise-Rock, Post-Punk and a tinge of New Wave attitutde. Other topics were his love for literature, his philantrophy and so much more. Enjoy our last interview for this marathon and, if you want to, give us node to who you'd like to be involved in our next marathon, starting on Christmas Eve! [Photo Credit: Jorin Bukosky]
This week Dave and Jon sit with hardcore & grind legend Chris Dodge. During his time in music Chris has seen it all.

In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes Davey Havok to the Tuna On Toast studio to celebrate life and 30 years of AFI! For this episode, it's the Avocado on Toast studio :) Stryker and Davey cover so much ground, from AFI, Blaqk Audio and Dreamcar, to funny late night Hollywood stories and a ton more! Davey tells Stryker how he injured his throat during quarantine, what the diagnosis eventually was, and how it's healed. The guys talk about the big New Years Eve Blaqk Audio Show coming up and Davey actually surprises Stryker with his answer to the question about Blaqk Audio rehearsals (or lack thereof). He explains how he and Jade Puget get ready for their BA shows. Davey tells Stryker a great story of his Katy Perry encounter including a situation that went down at her show when Davey was rocking a beautiful raspberry red Marc Jacobs suit. Davey then explains to Stryker why he constantly creates, where that passion comes from, and what album he received for his 5th birthday. Davey discusses with Stryker growing up in Ukiah with guys like Adam Carson, Jade and Nic 13 and the life journey that took him there. Davey tells another great and funny story about the time he met Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii. Davey and Stryker talk about when AFI moved to Berkeley, and the first time playing 924 Gilman Street and jumping on stage to play a few songs during a Rancid show. Stryker and Davey then discuss early AFI albums and what the legendary concert booker Stormy Shepherd told Davey when he asked her to book AFI. Both Stryker and Davey attempt to recall a night many years ago in Hollywood that involved supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and the very fun Chambers Brothers. Davey talks about meeting with and signing to a major label and what that experience was like. The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like. Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont. Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour. The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI. So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview. Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns. He is a true artist and a great dude. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Tuna on Toast.....Avocado on Toast.

When a childhood dream to become a ‘store lady' didn't pan out, Kamala Parks looked to other areas for inspiration. While attending school she began booking tours for bands such as the Offspring, Neurosis, Operation Ivy and Green Day, and was instrumental in the creation and growth of legendary DIY punk club 924 Gilman Street. Discovering a love for city planning, she became involved in transportation planning and engineering, and after a stint in the private sector, became senior planner for the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). In our engrossing conversation we talk about touring, Robert Moses, the Satanic Temple and so much more. Check it out! In this episode Kenny Lush introduces us to the world of independent wrestling. In addition to his work as a bouncer and a green roofer, Kenny has juggled touring as a wrestler and a musician for the last two decades. In this jam-packed episode we talk about touring Japan as a wrestler, the appropriate time to ‘blade' yourself during a show/match, why Gilman Street should host wrestling matches, how Charlie thinks greenery on a roof is for the elites and so much more. Kenny is a quintessential kind and friendly Canadian the whole time, even if he could definitely kick all of our asses. Check it out! When it comes to East Bay punk stuff, Alex Botkin knows his stuff. As the person behind Lavasocks Records, Alex does his part to keep the history and radness of the East Bay sound alive with releases such as “The Thing That Ate Floyd” comp. “Floyd” originally came out on Lookout! Records back in the stone ages of 1988 and has pretty much every band from the Bay Area of the time on it. An incredible record that Alex felt needed a new lease on life. Coming soon from Lavasocks is a partnership with Sell The Heart Records and a rethinking of Rancid's classic record, “And Out Come The Wolves”. This version has a much better title, “And Out Come The Lawsuits”. Track by track, “…Lawsuits” features 19 bands covering ALL 19 songs on the original record and WOW. It's an amazing record! So, Alex and I talk about the records, a little music history of the Bay Area, Gilman Street, Lookout Records, Rancid and more! Music of the episode is two songs of of “Floyd” and “…Lawsuits” - Sweet Baby and Cringer off of Floyd, Danger Inc. and Sarchasm off of Lawsuits. This episode is brought to you by Thirty One Ten Printing and Hodad's.

Sam brings up Gilman Street and Josh almost loses his mind. Josh holds back on making Jim Carrey jokes when Sam mentions that he used to be a cable guy. Sam makes a prediction about who will win the NBA Championship.More importantly, Sam tells about where he grew up, how he got into bartending and the importance of mentorship and how it can be found in places you might not have thought to look for it.You can find Samuel Jimenez on Instagram.Bartender Atlas is a worldwide directory of bartenders. Over the course of the band's 30-plus-year existence, Samiam has done it all. Since starting out on Gilman Street in the late '80s, the legendary punk band has released eight influential albums and a mess of excellent EPs. They've toured extensively, played all over the world, spent time on a major label and shared the stage with some of the planet's biggest bands. Though the band has experienced some lineup changes and members have become involved in lots of other bands along the way, Samiam is still going strong. Earlier this month, when Samiam came to The Back Room @ Colectivo to play its first Milwaukee show in more than 15 years, four members of the band spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas. While opener Off With Their Heads prepared to play and folks filed into the venue, Sergie Loobkov, Sean Kennerly, Chad Darby and Jason Beebout allowed Maas to come backstage, where they told him about all the projects that came before (and after) this artistic endeavor, the start of Samiam, the interesting way Darby wound up in the band, touring Asia with Green Day post-Dookie, their disdain for major labels and what keeps them making music together after all these years. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Samiam ("Wisconsin").
When a group of RVs was forced to leave Berkeley’s marina last year, many moved to West Berkeley, near Gilman Street where RVs line the sidewalks. Business owners and residents complain that the wheeled-homes leave garbage and take up parking space. Now, the Berkeley city council is considering a ban on overnight parking for RVs. Today, we hear from someone who will be affected by this proposed ban. Guest: Yesica Prado, RV owner and activist The Bay is hosting a live event in San Francisco on April 26th at 8 pm. This is Frank Carter! Frank was the lead vocalist for a hardcore punk band called Gallows, you may have seen them on the Vans Warped Tour a few years ago when they played. Since then, Frank has gone on to pursue an incredible new solo venture, and was currently out on the road supporting his newest record, Modern Ruin. We’re going to tag on the track, Vampires, at the end of this episode. This was recorded at the end of April, a couple of hours before Frank took the stage at 924 Gilman Street, an infamous punk club in Berkeley, CA. This episode was sponsored by Vinyl Me, Please! Martin Sprouse/November 16, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Martin Sprouse. Martin Sprouse grew up in Southern California and has been active in the San Francisco Bay Area punk scene since the late 1980s. It is crucial to note that Martin has been in no way a contributor to the Philly punk scene. While it may appear that his impressive efforts fall out of the parameters of this project, his inclusion is very much by design. The books Martin published under his Pressure Drop Press publishing company, which included John Yates’ unique A No Record Deal and the Sprouse-edited Sabotage In the American Workplace and, most especially for me (Joseph), Threat By Example, were a significant influence on my young life and this project. I’ve cited the influence of the collection of compelling and inspirational voices that is Threat By Example on several occasions and most recently in regard to L!F!P! Given the opportunity to speak at length with Martin while in the SF Bay Area to present L!F!P! in mid-November, 2013, I achieved what I feel is one of the finest interviews of this series. Along with his now-defunct publishing company, Martin also edited the punk ‘zine The Leading Edge in the mid-1980s, he moved to the Bay Area to work on MaximumRockNRoll (MRR) with the now-defunct Tim Yohannan, and he was a key player in the the creation of Berkeley’s internationally-known DIY venue the Gilman Street Project (or just Gilman Street). Reading MRR from the late ’80s on and seeing some early Gilman Street shows starting in 1989 were also tremendous (and cited) influences on not only this project, but also the Cabbage Collective. Martin recounts his years with a biting wit and sharp intellect. Within his Oakland warehouse apartment of almost Zen-like appearance (Martin appears to own almost nothing and lives a life sans clutter but with the ebullient hunting dog Grady), Martin currently works to design furniture. Among his many achievements, Martin is a “chick magnet,” which we discuss in the latter part of the interview. Photos By Karen Kirchhoff The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! I saw the awardwinning production of Monk while in Dakar for the FESMAN or the World Festival of Black Art and Culture in 2010. Small world (smile). We close with an extended conversation with Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe, whose direction of Lorriane Hansberry Theatre's current production of Joe Penhall's disturbingly insightful piece, "Blue/Orange" is stellar.
