When Francisco Álvarez was hit by a pitch yesterday to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, Buck Showalter made the move that any manager would, sending in Tim Locastro to run for his catcher, needing him to go 270 feet to win the game.It turned out that Álvarez just could have scored as easily as Locastro did, as DJ Stewart singled, Mark Vientos walked, and Rafael Ortega laced the walkoff single to right field. The last time the Mets had a pinch-runner come in and score as part of a walkoff rally was three years ago today, Billy Hamilton in the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium, in a doubleheader nightcap where the Mets were the home team. In that one, Jeff McNeil walked against Aroldis Chapman, and Hamilton came in and stole second base before trotting home on Amed Rosario's two-run shot.In that instance, Hamilton represented the tying run. So did Juan Lagares when he scored on Dominic Smith's home run to end the 2019 season. But it is Lagares who was the previous Mets pinch-runner to bring home a walkoff run. On September 26, 2017, Kevin Plawecki greeted A.J. Minter with a single as the Mets were tied 3-3 with Atlanta. Smith walked and Rosario struck out before Travis Taijeron delivered the winning hit. There's been only one time in Mets history that a runner entered the game, stole a base, and scored the winning run, and it was in the 13th inning on April 23, 1992, after a duel between Bret Saberhagen and Donovan Osborne went scoreless into extras. The Mets had already caught Rex Hudler stealing in the 12th when Dave Magadan singled with one out in the 13th — he was replaced at first by Rodney McCray, who became famous the year before. You've seen that video a million times. You probably haven't seen McCray go to second on a Junior Noboa single, steal third, and after an intentional walk to Charlie O'Brien, score the winning run when Juan Agosto hit Daryl Boston with a pitch. Well, now you can, because that game is on YouTube, with Tim McCarver and Ralph Kiner on the call.Shoutout to Keith Miller, who pinch-ran for Garry Templeton after a leadoff single in the ninth inning of a 5-4 game, got picked off but advanced to second because Expos pitcher Barry Jones threw the ball away, then stole third and eventually scored on Kevin McReynolds' walkoff grand slam off Scott Ruskin. That was the last walkoff grand slam the Mets hit at Shea, following Mike Jorgensen in 1980 and Tim Teufel in 1986. Tim Harkness and Jim Hickman each did it in 1963 at the Polo Grounds, while Citi Field has had walkoff slams by Jordany Valdespin in 2013, Ike Davis in 2014, and José Bautista in 2018. José Bautista's name was raised to the Level of Excellence this weekend but the Blue Jays bats didn't show up until Sunday. They were dropped by the red-hot Cubs by scores of 6-2 and 5-4 on Friday and Saturday and then avoided the sweep with a huge 11-4 win in the finale. We talked about the series with the Cubs, Hyun Jin Ryu earning his first win since coming back from Tommy John surgery, and the boost the team got when Edwin Encarnacion joined the bench as a special advisor. We also considered who the Blue Jays might next add to the Level of Excellence. After that, we took a look around the American League East and ahead to this week's two-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, Chris Black from Sportsnet joins the show to discuss what to expect from Kevin Gausman based on his recent performances, Davis Schneider's debut, the potential turning point for Daulton Varsho, and the ups and downs of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s season. Blake is joined by former Blue Jays outfielder Travis Snider (31:38) who shares his recent foray into coaching at the youth level and the significance of imparting self-awareness to bolster their mental well-being. Then, they go deep on former teammate José Bautista. Next, Vancouver Canadians manager Brent Lavallee (51:02) breaks down his team's impressive year-long streak of success and the growth of the Blue Jays minor league system. Finally, Arden Zwelling from Sportsnet joins from Cleveland (1:12:28) to look at the successful weekend in Boston, the backstory of Davis Schneider and provide insights into what to anticipate in the third game of the series in Cleveland. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliate.
The Toronto Blue Jays have never lost a game Davis Schneider has played in.That remains even so after Tuesday's loss, in which the red hot rookie remained glued to the bench as the Jays were shut out 1-0 against the Guardian in Cleveland. That he didn't play is, of course, entirely fine and far from unexpected for a guy who wasn't deemed worthy of a spot on a big league roster until less than a week ago — and not until Bo Bichette got hurt and the trade market failed to produce an established right-handed bat at the deadline. It's also incredibly funny, as the Blue Jays have managed to anger a bunch of those folks who can't seem to watch this sport without being utterly miserable about an aspect of the best story of the season. But, make no mistake, that's exactly what it is. And on episode 110 of Blue Jays Happy Hour, we spent a whole bunch of time talking about Schneider's story, and just how impressive and rare it is for a player like him to have exploded out of the gate the way he did in Boston over the weekend. Plus: a quasi-traditional vibe check, Yusei Kikuchi, Ross Atkins on Bo and Ryu, the six-man rotation, José Bautista going up on the Level of Excellence this weekend, and more.Have a listen! You can find us in all the usual places, such as Apple Podcasts……as well as Spotify, and others.
