„Valerie“ und „While you see a chance“ wurden Hits, Steve Winwood hatte sich neu und verändert präsentiert. Guests: Dan Ropek, Author of Tragic Magic: The Life of Traffic's Chris WoodTraffic was the most enigmatic British band of their day. Formed in early 1967 by Chris Wood, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Dave Mason, they rejected the bright lights of London in favor of a run-down, supposedly haunted cottage in the country - a place to live communally and write music. With Chris especially intent on channeling the vibes of England's landscape into their sound, days would be spent getting high, exploring, playing, and working in varying proportions. Against all odds, this eccentric model paid off - songs such as "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "John Barleycorn Must Die" would lift Traffic into the upper echelons of the rock world. As they brushed shoulders with Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, and the Grateful Dead, and with Dave dropping in and out of the band, Traffic's music evolved from a synthesis of Steve's innate musicality, Jim's atmospheric lyrics, and Chris's special brand of congenial mysticism. Record sales boomed, and tours carried them back and forth across the Atlantic. Everything seemed to be going to plan—a dreamlike fairy tale come true. But for Chris, a toll would be exacted. Amid the clashing egos, wearing road trips, stressful break ups, and a complex personal life, he vacillated precariously between bursts of exquisite creativity and torrents of self-destruction; a paradoxical dance which continued until he died in 1983. For a man who found artistic expression everything, and for whom suffering for it was an expectation, Chris would stare fully into Medusa's face of the music industry, paying a higher price than perhaps any of his contemporaries.Author Dan Ropek provides an in-depth look into Wood's life in his book Tragic Magic. Researched and written over ten years, it offers the only definitive account of Traffic's story and Chris Wood's quietly extraordinary life, something Dan shares here in a one-hour interview."Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour show about great books written about music and music-makers. A decade after what fans feared would be the last flight of The Eagles — SoCal's ultimate 1970s soft rockers — band mates Timothy Schmit and Don Felder teamed up with friends to try to create a new band, one they wanted to call “The Malibu Men's Choir.”Well, that effort failed — the new group never got off the ground — but their songwriting collaboration with Jim Capaldi and Paul Carrack did produce a hit for a re-energized Eagles when the band rebounded for its 1994-96 “Hell Freezes Over” Tour.As diehard Eagles enthusiasts know, the tour's name hearkened back a dozen years. Asked in 1982 by People magazine if he'd ever get the band back together, Don Henley was snide. Sure, he said, “When hell freezes over."When the reunion did come to pass — with a lineup of Henley, Felder, Schmit, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh performing live in April 1994 at Warner Bros. Studios for an MTV special — Frey quipped, "For the record, we never broke up. We just took a 14-year vacation."Here Comes The SongHowever, The Eagles didn't have much new material for the subsequent tour and accompanying album. That brings us to “Love Will Keep Us Alive.” Schmit already knew this song, because Capaldi and Carrack wrote it a few years earlier during that ill-fated Malibu Men's Choir project. On The Eagles' tour album, the song reached No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart despite not being released as a single. Critics noted that Schmit's rare lead vocal gave the ballad a tender fragility. The song was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.Meanwhile, Carrack — who may have had his own voice in mind when he co-wrote it — also recorded song on his 1996 album, Blue Views. Then 15 years later, he and Schmit recorded it together in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a release on the Carrack label. Our Take on the TuneBack in June, rolling into Huntington's West End to play at a picnic to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the city's beloved Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the band played its then-new cover of The Eagles' first big hit, “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”“That was great!” the hostess said. “Play another Eagles tune.” Uh-oh, there wasn't another Eagles song in the Flood repertoire. Well, not yet, anyway. Then Randy Hamilton stepped up.“I think I got one,” Randy said at a later band rehearsal. It turned out that for years Randy had been singing “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” ever since he had performed it at his sister's wedding. “It's her favorite song,” he added. When he started singing for his Flood brothers, the tune just naturally slipped into a groove. Here from last week's rehearsal is Randy leading the way! This is a public episode. Simon Kirke of Bad Company Live on Game Changers With Vicki I was Live with Simon Kirke, co-founder of Free and Bad Company, two of the greatest rock bands in history. A huge lifelong fan, it was a thrill to sit down and hear how it all went down, including how Snuffy, a guitar player kinda close to my heart, ended up playing on Free's Heartbreaker. We heard about Simon's very humble beginnings with neither running water nor electricity, talk about building character, his transistor radio, listening to big bands, pre-Beatles, making his own drumsticks, and finding his way back to London from the countryside with a time limit to make it and joining Paul Kossoff's Black Cat Bones just under the wire. How they formed Free, All Right Now, the song that made them, and perhaps, destroyed them. The unrelenting touring, and then Kosoff's unrelenting drugs. How the band evolved before imploding. Ultimately, in part, morphing into Bad Company, one of the greatest straight-up rock bands of all time with Simon co-writing its anthem. He's the only member of the band to be in every lineup since its inception, including the band's last tour. We heard about them all. Thrilling! I so love Simon's solo effort, All Because of You, written for Maria, his wife of 6 years. Reminiscent of Roger Daltry for me, it's in heavy rotation in my kitchen. He's guested on recordings by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, and Ron Wood, and has toured with Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. The best with the best. We heard great stories about Chuck, Ringo, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Dave Mason, and of course, Kossoff and Rodgers. We talked at length about addiction––the drinking, the drugs, the debauchery, some great stories there, and recovery, tried more than once, and how it was too long ago for Kossoff. But, has gratefully stuck for Simon, who is doing much to give back. Simon works with Road Recovery, aiding teens to get and hopefully stay sober, is on the board of a Rehab facility, Right Turn, and is in the process of writing a Rock Opera about recovery with its CEO. Simon fears with Paul Rodgers' health issues, this is the end of Bad Company after 50 years. He's scored a few films and looks forward to a lot more of that in his future, mirroring another musician turned composer we know who's fared pretty well. They say, be careful meeting your heroes. No worries here. Simon Kirke exceeded all my very high (but sober) hopes, as a person and a rock star. What fun! Can't Get Enough! Drummer SIMON KIRKE kept the beat for two of the '70s most popular bluesy hard rockers: Free and Bad Company. Born in London, Simon developed an interest in music at a young age and joined a local band called the Maniacs to play drums and sing. He negotiated a deal with his parents after graduating high school, that if he couldn't make it as a drummer in a band within a two-year period, he would then start a college career. Just a few months before the self-imposed deadline, Kirke landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. He befriended the group's guitarist, Paul Kossoff, who convinced him to start a new band with singer Paul Rodgers and ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers bassist Andy Fraser. This band became Free in 1968. The group would prove to be successful particularly on the strength of their classic 1970 release Fire and Water, and its anthemic hit single "All Right Now." However drugs and infighting began to dessimate the members' relationship and they broke up in 1973. Paul Kossoff passed away just three years later. From the ashes of Free rose Bad Company. Simon and Paul Rodgers were joined by ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell and ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. The band became one of the first groups signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song and their debut album, 1974's Bad Company, went on to become one of hard rock's all-time classics. Bad Company enjoyed several years of huge success before splitting up in 1982 (the group did reunite later in the decade without Rodgers, and again in the '90s when Rodgers rejoined). Simon Kirke has always been super busy. As well as his work with Bad Company, he guested on a long list of recordings by other artists including albums by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, Ringo Starr and Ron Wood, among countless others. He was often drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. In 2003, Simon went out on his very first solo tour and released his debut solo album. Since then there have been more solo albums, the latest of which is 2017's All Because of You. Simon shares his incredible stories of success as well as his multiple personal and professional challenges with us this week. So very late one night Da Boyz were taking a break from recording in the studio while their Engineers, DB Cooper, Dick Goesinya, and Barry MyKockinher (aka The Crew) worked on the Homan Studio A master control board where some wire(s) had come undone.  The Boyz took the opportunity to elevate several bottles of cerveza each and fill the studio with music while they conversed at least a ‘dime's worth' along with their recording consultant, Jack Herer.  Needless to say after more than an hour's delay in recording in the early morning hours that night they began to have some trouble with space and time once 'the crew' began to again roll tape. And there was a reason.  As their senior producer, Tiffany Rosdedale, likes to say, “when dem Boyz open up a dime they open up their mind and they roll joints bigger than King Kong's fingers and smoke it down till they're stingers”. Scot and Jeff discuss Traffic/Steve Winwood with Randy Barnett. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Randy Barnett. He's the Patrick Hotung Professor of Constitutional Law at the Georgetown University Law Center where he directs the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. His most recent book, The Original Meaning of the 14th Amendment: Its Letter and Spirit, will be published by Harvard University Press and is now available for preorder on Amazon. Follow him on Twitter at @RandyEBarnett. Randy's Music Pick: Traffic/Steve Winwood We return after a lengthy lay-off with a look at the career of one of the most talented musicians we've ever covered on the show, Steve Winwood. Joining The Spencer Davis Group at the age of 14, Winwood had a voice well beyond his years and was more than proficient at multiple instruments. After a few years and a couple of hits, he left to form Traffic, the band at the heart of this episode. Traffic's blend of folk, rock, jazz, and soul were driven by the partnership of Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood, along with the talents of Chris Wood. Dave Mason became the Rachel to the band's Ross through the years, joining and leaving multiple times.  Beginning in 1967, the band first turned out eclectic pop singles flavored with psychedelic influences. Traffic emphasized Winwood's organ and piano and the reed instruments played by Chris Wood. After a first break-up, members reconvened following Winwood's trouble crafting a solo album. In its second iteration, Traffic developed into a band that favored extended jams, leaving room for jazz-like improvisation. Perhaps best-known in the States now for “The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys,” the band frequently touched the Top Ten album charts during the 1970s. On this episode, you'll hear music and discussion involving Spencer Davis, Traffic, Blind Faith, Steve Winwood, and Dave Mason plus special appearances by The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. It's a veritable Rock and Roll Stew around here. Jump in and enjoy the program. You'll be feelin' alright in no time flat.

Join Michael Litten "The Last DJ" for an in-depth discussion. Featuring a variety of songs. Sponsored by Drinkmate Theme music provided by Peter Perkins Special Thank You to Lucy Piller/ARN Entertainment for providing the talent Born and raised in London, the Beatles perked a teenage Simon's interest in rock music, and he picked up the drums - leading to a gig with a local band called the Maniacs, on which Simon supplied drums and lead vocals (something quite uncommon at the time). Simon worked out a deal with his parents after graduating high school, that if he couldn't "make it" as a drummer in a band within a two-year period, that he would begin a college career. Just a few months before the deadline, Simon landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. The drummer befriended the group's talented guitarist, Paul Kossoff, who in turn convinced Simon to leave the group with him and begin a new outfit with singer Paul Rodgers. Soon ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers bassist Andy Fraser signed on and Free was officially formed in 1968. Mixing blues with hard rock, the group would prove to be quite influential, especially on the strength of their classic 1970 release, Fire and Water, and its strutting, anthemic hit single, "All Right Now."      When the band broke up, it didn't take Simon long to find another gig, joining Paul Rodgers in a new band, Bad Company, which was quite similar stylistically to Free. Joined by ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell and ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, Bad Company was the first group signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song. Their debut album, 1974's Bad Company, would go on to become one of hard rock's all-time classics, as it birthed such long-standing rock radio standards as "Can't Get Enough," "Ready for Love," and the title track, written by Paul and Simon himself. The group hails as one of the all-time top rock outfits. Simon Kirke is the only member of Bad Company who's been in every lineup of the band.      In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Simon has guested on a long list of recordings by other artists over the years, including albums by Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov't Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. Simon recently toured with Bad Company and The Eagles' Joe Walsh, and recorded a soul-baring solo record, "All Because of You," with Chicago band, The Empty Pockets, released by The End Records/BMG (2017).   https://officialsimonkirke.com

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason's career spans over half a century and encompasses producing, performing and song writing. Fans and critics alike hail Dave as one of the most talented songwriters and guitarists in the world - which is why he is still performing over 100 shows a year to sold-out crowds.   Mason has been playing guitar most of his life. By 15, Dave had founded two bands: The Deep Feeling and The Hellions. At 18, the Worcester, England native teamed up with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form the legendary band Traffic. At 19, Mason penned the song "Feelin' Alright". The rock anthem, first recorded by Traffic and then covered by dozens of other artists (including Joe Cocker), cemented both Dave's and Traffic's legacy and had a profound influence over rock music that continues today. Mason left Traffic in 1969 to pursue a solo career in the US.  Dave has penned over 100 songs, has 3 gold albums: Alone Together, Dave Mason and Mariposa De Oro and a platinum album Let it Flow, which contained the top-ten single "We Just Disagree". In addition to cranking out hits, Dave has performed on or contributed to a number of famous albums, including: The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, Paul McCartney and Wings Venus and Mars and Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. Mason is featured playing acoustic guitar in “All Along the Watchtower” on Electric Ladyland, a favorite in Dave's live shows! Dave, a prolific artist in his own right, has collaborated with an enviable list of the who's who in the music industry… Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Rita Coolidge, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Ron Wood, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, and Jim Capaldi, just to name a few. In addition to his own productions, Mason's distinctive work is featured on numerous gold and platinum albums such as:

Ela conheceu a São Martinho em 1992 e desde então, ela e o marido passaram a ajudar a associação. Antes de morrer, de câncer, em 2005, o músico pediu para ela continuar ajudando a instituição. O projeto conta com atividades de canto, cavaquinho, percussão, violão e prática de conjunto para cerca de 200 beneficiários de sete 7 a 17 anos. Adrianne and I were in the car the other day — I don't remember where we were going but I do remember that we were listening to Classic Vinyl on XM because we both really dig Meg Griffin. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic came on and whatever conversation we were in the middle of stopped and we just listened to this incredible song written by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi. If you've never heard the track, it's basically a twelve minute jam that ebbs and flows in dynamics and complexity with a 24-year-old Winwood singing over the top of it. The musicianship is fantastic and listening to it got us talking about creative complexity and how looking at or listening to something that is artistically or technically just out of our reach can be wildly inspiring, both as a fan and as a maker. Rock is here: Londres

Para la despedida, “A piece for assorted lunatics”, como se conocía en aquél momento a esta canción, luego rebautizada “Eclipse”, la que cierra “The Dark Side of the Moon”, de Pink Floyd, en la versión en vivo en el Rainbow Theatre, grabada el 20 de febrero de 1972.Tracklist"Baba O'riley", The Who"Father to Son", Queen Live at the Rainbow Theatre 1974"Won't Get Fooled Again", The Who"Get 'Em Out by Friday", Genesis"Foxy Lady", Jimi Hendrix“Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad”, Eric Clapton “Eclipse”, Pink Floyd“The Heathen”, Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at the Rainbow Theatre“Celluloid Heroes”, The...

This week on Prog-Watch I'm shaking the family tree of Traffic! Hear lots of great music from the band proper and the four original members, Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, Steve Winwood, and Chris Wood! Everything you hear will not be progressive rock in the strictest sense, but rest assured it will be fabulous classic rock from an influential and storied band, and the wildly talented individual members.

Dave was one of the founding members of Traffic, along with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Dave discusses candidly why he left the band right after the first album, why he came back for the second record… and why he then left again… How he met, and wound up playing 12-string guitar on Hendrix’ “All Along The Watchtower,” and almost replaced Noel Redding… Dave’s blunt advice he wish someone had given him when he was younger, and much more on this frank interview with a musical legend... Ian Paice was born on June 29, 1948, in Nottingham, England. Ian got his first drum kit by age of 15. Ian neither had any formal education in music. He learned to play drums by trying to imitate what he heard from drummers playing on the radio. Paice greatly admired drumming styles of jazz legends like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and always dreamt of emulating them. He practiced hard on drums, especially noting that being left handed, he needed to come of with techniques which would fit the right handed drum kits. Though Paice was playing for his father’s Dance band in the early 60s, the first professional band he played with was "Georgie and the Rave ons", a local group in Becester, which later came to be known as "The Shindigs". After a short stint with this group, Paice left it to join another group called M15, which became The Maze. Soon after, Paice left and helped form Deep Purple with Rod Evans, Jon Lord, Nick Simper and Ritchie Blackmore in 1968. Deep Purple would later be one of the biggest rock bands in the world, especially during the 60s and the 70s. They would soon start dominating the charts with such hit albums like Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, Come Taste The Band, Stormbringer and Burn. Paice's drumming techniques have been showcased in many of their hit songs but the best example are 'Made in Japan' "The Mule" , "Child In Time", "Flight of the Rat" and the album 'Machine Head'.Paice was called for studio recording by a number of artists who included Peter York, Elf, Green Bullfrog, Velvet Underground, Baby Face, Eddie Harris, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, William Shatner, Jim Capaldi and many others. From 1979 to 1982, Paice worked with Whitesnake and released 3 albums. In 1982 he also played with Gary Moore Band. After 2 years of playing with Gary Moore, he got back to Deep Purple. In 1999, Ian made a guest appearance in Paul McCartney’s Run Devil Run. Paice released a solo DVD and continues his world clinic instruction. Paice is also in the Drummers’ Hall of Fame and just inducted in the Rock Roll HOF class of 2016! Deep Purple continues to tour worldwide and remains at the top of rock roll’s Elite Bands.

Born and raised in London, Simon landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. Mixing blues with hard rock, the group would prove to be quite influential, especially on the strength of their classic Fire and Water, "All Right Now." When the band broke up, it didn't take Simon long to find another gig, joining Paul Rodgers in a new band, Bad Company. Simon Kirke is the only member of Bad Company who’s been in every lineup of the band.In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Simon has “guested” on a long list of recordings by other artists including Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov’t Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. Simon just finished his latest solo record, "All Because of You," to be released on BMG Records in 2016. Presently, he is on-the-road for 2016 with Bad Company on their 2016 world tour with, The Eagles' Joe Walsh.

Hole In My Shoe - Traffic Steve Winwood was still a young teenager when he and his older brother joined up with Spencer Davis and Pete York to form The Spencer Davis Group. He quit the group in 1967, when he was still only 19, and joined up with Dave Mason, Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi, to form Traffic. Although a great deal of Traffic's sound leaned toward blues-rock, particularly when Winwood sang lead, some early Traffic is truly psychedelic. Mr. Fantasy, their first album (also released as Heaven Is In Your Mind in the USA), holds more psych than the rest, including Paper Sun, Utterly Simple, Dear Mr. Fantasy, and Hole In My Shoe. I chose Hole today, mainly because of the sitar music, the odd spoken-word break by a child, and one of the early uses of the Mellotron.
