George Harrison played with many associates of both Dylan and the Stones. Bobby Keys was one of the most renowned sax men of rock and roll, Nicky Hopkins contributed to the buzz of "Revolution", and Jesse "Ed" Davis had his fingerprints all over early seventies solo Beatles. This week, we consider some recordings, most made at Apple Studios, most featuring George Harrison on electric (usually slide) guitar. Who knew George could compose Mexicali blues (as some call "The Holdup")
Sticky Fingers is considered by many to be the greatest studio album the Rolling Stones ever created. This ninth studio album represented a return to a more basic sound for the Stones after several albums with less conventional instrumentation. It was also known for its cover artwork from Andy Warhol which featured a man in jeans with a working zipper. The album won a Grammy for “Best Album Cover” for this innovative design. This was the first album that was released on their own label, Rolling Stones Records. It was also the first album the group produced without Brian Jones, who had died two years earlier. The members of the band were Charlie Watts on drums, Bill Wyman on bass, Mick Taylor on guitar, Keith Richards on guitar and backing vocals, and Mick Jagger on lead vocals and some guitar and percussion. There were a number of session musicians and frequent collaborators involved in the album, including Bobby Keys on sax, and Billy Preston and Ian Stewart on keyboards.Sticky Fingers was the band's first album to reach number 1 on album charts in both the US and the UK. It has since reached triple platinum status, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The album was also the first album to utilize the now-iconic “mouth” for which the group would be known.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Bruce's absence, while Rob brings us this amazing album from one of the giants of the rock world in this week's podcast. Wild HorsesThis softer song with a country bent was first released in 1970 by the Flying Burrito Brothers, and subsequently recorded by the Stones after originally thinking the demo wasn't worth recording. It was originally recorded over a three-day period at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama in 1969. The lyrics are about being on the road, and not being where you really want to be.Brown SugarThe opening track to the album was also the lead single, and reached the top of the charts in the US and Canada, while reaching number 2 on the UK singles chart. The song sounds like a strong rocking one, but the lyrics discuss slavery and rape, a much more serious topic than most realized the lyrics covered.BitchThis track which leads off side two of the album was the B-side to the single “Brown Sugar.” It has a strong brass section — the song originated in a jam, and features Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trumpet. The lyrics are describing love as a bitch but the title probably didn't help the band in its problems with women's groups. Can't You Hear Me KnockingThis is the longest song on the album, clocking in at over seven minutes. The central part of the song lasts for 2:43, with an extended jam following. The entire track was captured in one take, and the band continued with the jam, thinking that the recording was complete. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:One Tin Soldier (from the motion picture “Billy Jack”)This counterculture song was a prominent part of the soundtrack to the action drama "Billy Jack" a part Navajo Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran defending his Freedom School students from angry townspeople. STAFF PICKS:Get It On by ChaseWayne starts out the staff picks with a high energy song from an artist known for his jazz trumpet. Bill Chase brought together a band including three other trumpet players, a rock rhythm section, and front man Terry Richards on lead vocals. This jazz fusion rock piece peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.Let's Get It On by Marvin GayeLynch brings us a track that has taken on a life of its own as the ultimate romance song. Backed by the Funk Brothers, it is the most successful song Gaye produced on Motown Records. It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the US Hot Soul Singles chart.Love Her Madly by the DoorsMike features the first single from the album “L.A. Woman,” the sixth studio album from the Doors, and the final album with Jim Morrison before his untimely death. Guitarist Robby Krieger wrote this song while experimenting with a 12-string guitar. It Don't Come Easy by Ringo Starr Rob finishes the staff picks with a non-album single from the drummer of the recently-disbanded Beatles. Fellow Beatle George Harrison produced the single and helped Starr write the song which peaked at number 4 on the US and UK singles charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “The Summer of 42”We exit this week's podcast with the signature song from this Academy Award nominee and coming-of-age movie in the theaters in April 1971. Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Watch at your own peril (https://youtu.be/IIik_o16sro?si=WvmR54QPJ16Qmd6s). Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). 6 juillet 1971. Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Keith Richards made Talk is Cheap in 1988 as a response to Mick Jagger's efforts as a solo artist and the sniping the two had engaged in via the press in the mid-80s. But the Glimmer Twins made up, recorded Steel Wheels in 1989 and launched one of the biggest tours in rock history, reestablishing the Stones as a viable touring act. However, Keith didn't want to give up this fabulous band he'd created with Steve Jordan (now in the Stones), Charlie Drayton, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash and Bobby Keys. So while the Stones paused before Voodoo Lounge, Keith & the X-Pensive Wynos released Main Offender. Wicked As It Seems was a bit of a hit on rock radio and inspired Mick to work with Keith to create Love Is Strong off Voodoo Lounge. It's a great album and the band did tour to support it. In this episode, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of the Rolling Stones' double album opus, 'Exile On Main St.' The culmination of their four-album streak that began with 'Beggars Banquet' and is as good of a four-album run as any artist has ever had, many consider 'Exile' to be the Stones' definitive work. This exercise unlocked an even greater appreciation of it for me, and I hope it will for you as well...Head over to Dr. Cropper's Office Hour to hear my conversation with my friend, Alex Mihalopoulos, about it: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/dr-croppers-office-hour/id1576794096?i=1000561487492Instagram & TikTok — @rocktalk.dr.cropperTwitter — @RockTalkDrCroppFacebook, LinkedIn & YouTube — Rock Talk with Dr. CropperEmail — rocktalk.dr.cropper@gmail.comSupport the show
Welcome to Roadcase!! We are incredibly psyched that a Rolling Stone is on the bus for this episode: the one and only Karl Denson!! Karl has been rocking the saxophone for decades with his unique brand of funk, soul, jazz and blues in his various incarnations -- Tiny Universe and The Greyboy Allstars -- as well as lending his musical genius on tour with The Rolling Stones since 2015. Apart from his musical endeavors, Karl is a true Renaissance Man, contemplating many unique forms of artistic expression including writing a TV screenplay based on String Theory, the notion that all things are connected down to a molecular level. This type of ground-up thinking is just one of the many aspects that endears Karl to his legion of dedicated fans. But Karl also operates from a standpoint of extreme gratitude and grace, punctuated by his outspoken nature regarding his sharp socio-political points of view. He is truly a unique human and artist and we are honored to have him on the show. So hop aboard the Roadcase bus learn more from this elder-statesman of funk, Karl Denson. It's gonna be a great ride! For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

In 2017 I was able to attend a homecoming show for Bobby Whitlock. A Memphis native, Whitlock's initial foray into fame included playing a pivotal role in a band popular among musicians, Delaney & Bonnie. Whitlock had played with several local Stax Recording artists including Sam & Dave, Albert King, The Staple Singers, and Booker T & the MGs. He joined Delaney and Bonnie in 1968. While a member of this highly touted band, Whitlock met and played with what would become Derek & the Dominos including Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, and Eric Clapton. He also met and played with key musicians who would go on to significant roles including Bobby Keys (childhood neighbor of Buddy Holly and long-time sax player in the Rolling Stones) and Jim Price. In 1970 Whitlock recorded several tracks with George Harrison for his All Things Must Pass album. He also played with John Lennon, Apple Recording artist Doris Troy, and toured the album for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Eventually, Whitlock, Gordon, Clapton, and Radle would form the band Derek and the Dominos (1970 - 1971) considered by many to be Clapton's finest 'band' ensemble. Working with Tom Dowd, Whitlock would get co-writing credits on nine tracks for the band's landmark album, Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs: Clapton's homage to then George Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd (whom Harrison met while filming A Hard Days Night with the Beatles). Interview with Bobby Whitlock (Derek & the Dominos feat Eric Clapton)1. Derek & the Dominos / Layla2. Derke & the Dominos / Keep on Growing3. Derke & the Dominos / Bell Bottom Blues 4. Ken, Chip and Kahuna are joined by actor Brian O'Halloran (Clerks 1-3)to review the long lost Seventies rock horror musical, Son of Dracula. How was a rock movie starring Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Leon Russell and Bobby Keys at the height of their fame unable to find distribution? How is it no one has ever even heard of this movie? Were there any drugs left in the UK by the time they wrapped shooting? Listen up and find out! And go see "Clerks 3" when it's in theaters next year!
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the life of Bobby Keys, an American sax player who got thrown out of The Rolling Stones for partying too hard.
Happy Monday, friends. This week Hank and Dave were joined by our newest buddy, the thoughtful and introspective Ryan Deffet; settle in for a soothing journey.Ryan is a driving force and singer/songwriter/guitarist for Chicago bands Space Gators and Faux Furrs while also finding the time to be an in-demand record producer and engineer. While following Ryan’s path we mull over the idea of writing for your audience, the dichotomy between the introverted artist and raucous rock and roll stage performance, being mindful in sharing and juggling energies across multiple projects, and the joy of moving into one’s own studio space. Also discussed: Melda Productions free plugin suite, Jack White being a good dude, Novation’s Aphex Twin collab, Behringer’s ARP 2600 clone, Google Hum to Search, Bobby Keys, officially kicking off the rename of Hank Hits with Neil Young’s After the Goldrush, perfect sandwiches, and the inherently debatable philosophy of Partscasters. The world’s scary enough, don’t yell at me when I’m trying to buy your stuff.
In this episode I review the Rolling Stones' recently released deluxe edition of Goats Head Soup, featuring the legendary Brussels Affair live album.
Syyskuun alussa julkaistiin Rolling Stonesin vuoden 1973 albumi Goats Head Soup, monenlaisena messevänä boxina. Rock Around The Blogin Sami Ruokangas, Juha Kakkuri ja Pauli Kauppila hämmentävät kauriinpääsoppaa, analysoivat levyä ja purkavat Rollari-myyttejä. Jamaicalla puukkomies hyökkää Billin ja Astridin hotellihuoneeseen. 10-vuotias piikittää heroiinia puistossa ja ilmassa on huumeista väkivaltaa. Musiikki on rock-funkia. Vastapainona kuullaan Angie-hittiballadi, mutta kenestä se kertoo? Van Morrisonin ja Gram Parsonsin vaikutus ulottuu impressionistisiin sanoituksiin. 1973-kiertueeella äänitetään Stonesin paras livelevy. Bobby Keys kylpee samppanjassa ja saa kenkää. Nicky Hopkins on merkittävässä roolissa Goats Head Soupilla, mutta hänetkin vaihdetaan pian Billy Prestoniin. Rock Around The Blogin omien nuoruusmuistojen lisäksi käsitellään ennen julkaisemattomat harvinaisuudet: All The Rage, Criss Cross ja Scarlet, jolla Jimmy Pagen vierailee. Dancing With Mr. D ja koko albumi heijastelee myös New Orleansin voodoo pappi Dr. Johnin vaikutusta ja kaurinpääsoppa lisää mieskuntoa. Mukana menossa ovat myös Uglu & The Silkience, Jimmy Miller, Mick Taylor, Keef Richards, Pink Floyd, Ian ”Stu” Stewart, Bill Janovitz, Funkadelic, Muddy Waters, Quireboys, Hanoi Rocks, Esko Riihelä, Petri ja Pettersson Brass, David Bowie ja Tuhmat Tädit.
Other topics include: The Seattle music scene being totally inbred. Portland musical cliques. The Stone Roses, Grant Heart and Husker Du, Joe Bass and Bobby Keys. Mike giving an audition tape to Sunny Day Real Estate. What a mistake it is for labels to not make digital copies of their existing tape inventory. Jamie tells his attempt to get on a major tour with the Violent Femmes strategy. "Cure hair" and Randy Rhoads. Microfiche vs the smart phones How being nineteen in 1990 is way different than being nineteen in 2020 and living Groundhog Day. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/goldenshower/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goldenshower/support
In this episode Jamie and Mike gush over their love of each of The Who members, but take them to task over some of the covers on this record. A word of advice, never ever cover James Brown. As always, the conversation veers to other bands, and their influences. The missed opportunity of Bobby Keys not being a keyboard player, and the playability of three pickup Gibson SGs The end of the episode almost sees the end of the podcast in general, as Jamie and Mike clash over the idea that Jimi Hendrix is on the same songwriting plane as The Who. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/goldenshower/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goldenshower/support

Birthday twins exist in many of our lives. Knowing two people who share the same birthday and year is fairly common, even surprisingly, in Rock And Roll! Fanny special with in conversation with David Eastaugh. Fanny was an American rock band, active in the early 1970s. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles. The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, (who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s). After playing through several variations of the band, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group, leading to the original line-up splitting. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and with a former drummer, Brie Howard Darling, formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked the Earth in 2018. The group has continued to attract critical acclaim for rejecting typical girl group styles and expectations of women in the rock industry generally, and emphasizing their musical skills. Later groups, such as The Bangles and The Runaways, cited Fanny as a key influence. Sisters June and Jean Millington moved with their family from the Philippines to Sacramento, California, in 1961. They began to play music together on ukuleles as they found it helped them gain friends. In high school they formed an all-female band called the Svelts with June on guitar, Jean on bass, Addie Lee on guitar, and Brie Brandt on drums. Brandt left to get married and was later replaced by Alice de Buhr. When the Svelts disbanded, de Buhr and Lee formed another all-female group called Wild Honey. The Millington sisters later joined this band, which played Motown covers and eventually moved to Los Angeles. Frustrated by a lack of success or respect in the male-dominated rock scene, Wild Honey decided to disband after one final open-mic appearance at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles in 1969. They were spotted at this gig by the secretary of producer Richard Perry, who had been searching for an all-female rock band to mentor. Perry convinced Warner Bros. Records to sign the band, still known as Wild Honey, to Reprise Records. The group won the contract without the label hearing them play, on the grounds of being a novelty act, despite their genuine musical talent. Prior to recording their first album, the band recruited keyboardist Nickey Barclay. The band was then renamed Fanny, not with a sexual connotation but to denote a female spirit. The initial lineup consisted of June Millington on guitar, Jean Millington on bass, de Buhr on drums, Barclay on keyboards, and Brandt on lead vocals and percussion. Perry dismissed Brandt because he wanted the group to be a self-contained four piece band like The Beatles. The Millingtons and Barclay all assumed lead vocal duties on alternating songs, while de Buhr sang lead occasionally on later albums. Perry produced the band's first three albums, beginning with Fanny in 1970. Because of the connection to Perry and Reprise Records, Barclay was invited to tour with Joe Cocker as a backing singer, and consequently appeared on the album Mad Dogs and Englishmen. The group's cover of Cream's "Badge" from the first album had significant radio airplay. The follow-up album, Charity Ball was released the following year, and its title track reached #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The members of Fanny also worked as session musicians, and played on Barbra Streisand's 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand, after Streisand had wanted to record with a small band. The group continued to pick up well-known fans; David Bowie sent the group a letter admiring their work and invited the band to a post-show party where he showed them mime techniques. With young engineer Leslie Ann Jones as their road manager and live sound mixer, Fanny toured worldwide, opening for Slade, Jethro Tull and Humble Pie, gaining widespread popularity in the United Kingdom. A 1971 article in Sounds remarked that the group "seems that they are the support group to everyone these days". The group made several live television appearances during tours, including The Sonny and Cher Show, American Bandstand, The Old Grey Whistle Test and Beat-Club. The group's third album, Fanny Hill (1972) featured the Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick in addition to Perry's production. It included a cover of "Hey Bulldog" and Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar". The latter featured regular Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, and was released as a single, reaching #85 on the Billboard Hot 100.[16][17] Fellow Stones sideman Jim Price also played brass on the album.Rolling Stone wrote a rave review of the album, praising the group's musical skills and particularly June Millington's ability to play both lead and rhythm guitar. Their fourth album, Mother's Pride (1973), was produced by Todd Rundgren. By the time Mother's Pride was released, June Millington was feeling constrained by the group format. The record label wanted her to wear certain designer clothes and adopt a hard rock image, which she resisted. She decided to quit the group, later saying "I needed to figure out who I was" and regularly clashed with Barclay, who had a different personality to her. June moved to Woodstock to study Buddhism, but insisted the group continue without her. de Buhr also left the band, with Brandt returning on drums. Patti Quatro (sister of Suzi Quatro) replaced June on guitar. This lineup signed with Casablanca Records and released the final Fanny album, Rock and Roll Survivors, in 1974. The first single, "I've Had It" reached #79 on the Billboard Hot 100. Brandt left the band shortly after the album's completion when she married composer James Newton Howard, and was briefly replaced by Cam Davis. Barclay quit the group at the end of 1974, thinking it was not working without June Millington. The second single, "Butter Boy" was written by Jean Millington about Bowie, and became their biggest hit, reaching #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1975. By the time that was released, the group had split.
