The 11 o Clock Show In the twilight years of the 1990s, The 11 O'Clock Show exploded onto Channel 4 as a sharp, satirical late-night comedy that would come to define a cultural shift in British humour. Launched in 1998, the show embraced controversy, irreverence, and chaos—offering a blend of current affairs commentary, anarchic sketches, and daring character work. What began as an experimental format with modest expectations quickly grew into a breeding ground for some of the most iconic comedic voices of the next two decades. This episode explores how The 11 O'Clock Show served as the launchpad for then-unknown talents like Sacha Baron Cohen, Ricky Gervais, and Mackenzie Crook. We revisit Ali G's legendary rise from fringe character to cultural juggernaut, Ricky Gervais' early incarnations of cringe comedy, and Crook's subtle brilliance in darkly offbeat sketches. All three would go on to revolutionise British and global comedy in their own ways, but it was this chaotic Channel 4 late-nighter where the seeds were first sown. Behind the camera, the writing talent was equally impressive, with future stars like Charlie Brooker and John Oliver contributing to the show's jagged, boundary-testing tone. With contributions from Father Ted creators and Borat collaborators, The 11 O'Clock Show was a nexus of comedy evolution, fusing tabloid cynicism with Gen X sarcasm. The episode also unpacks the cultural moment that gave rise to the show: a time when New Labour's gloss was beginning to crack, political correctness was being loudly challenged, and the media was becoming increasingly self-aware. The 11 O'Clock Show didn't always get it right—it could be juvenile, offensive, and uneven—but it helped pave the way for the next era of British satire. More than two decades later, the show's influence can still be felt in the tone, style, and structure of modern comedy. From Ali G's real-world interviews to the cringe-laced realism of The Office, The 11 O'Clock Show helped rewrite the rules of televised humour. This episode takes you back to the messy, brilliant, late-night chaos that changed the face of comedy—whether Channel 4 knew it or not. To mark the tenth anniversary of BBC sitcom Detectorists, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones dig into archaeologists and treasure hunters on screen. Mark speaks first to stand-up comedian and actor Alexei Sayle about his small, but pivotal, role in the third Indiana Jones film The Last Crusade. Mark then talks to Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, whose recent film La Chimera is the story of a down-at-heel tomb raider, played by Josh O'Connor, looting Etruscan artefacts in 1980s Italy. Meanwhile, Ellen speaks to French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop about her new film Dahomey - a docudrama that follows 26 looted treasures from the 19th century Kingdom of Dahomey, as they make their return trip from Paris to present-day Benin. And she talks to Mackenzie Crook, creator and star of Detectorists, about how an episode of Time Team inspired the series - about a pair of Essex metal detectorists hunting for long-buried treasures from the past.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Recorded on a hungover rainy Sunday, it's a history-on-TV episode, and it's an episode about HISTORY IN THE FIELD. Literally in the field, or rather in a field: metal detecting, archeology, and a little bit of mudlarking on the side. Don't we all want to find some buried treasure? This week, Dan and Kasia talk about the sweet and gently profound Mackenzie Crook sitcom Detectorists, and what a powerful case it makes for 'ordinary civilians' doing grassroots history as a hobby. Maybe we all have a Saxon burial ground underneath our feet? Isn't that a thrilling thought? Can even a ringpull from a can of Tizer help bring the 1980s to life? Then there's Time Team, the show responsible for bringing archeology to the masses and making it sexy - how did it end up as a YouTube show, and what became of the anti-establishment hero at the heart of it (we're not talking about Tony Robinson, sorry Tony). *** For the full episode, join our Patreon!! *** ONLY £4 A MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE CULTURAL HISTORIANS - AND GET 20+ BONUS EPISODES AND A CURSED OBJECTS STICKER PACK! This weeks Midweek Mention is a glorious mishmash of ultra low-budget niche-interest film-making and Sidey trolling as we start our winter celebrations with a look at The Asylum's HOME ALONE with dogs clone, BONE ALONE (aka ALONE FOR CHRISTMAS). When Dad (David Deluise) and family mistakenly accuse talking German Shepherd Bone of almost ruining Christmas, he is packed off to the worlds worst kennel rather than taken to Grandma's house to enjoy the festivities. Realising that their house will be robbed by an overly flirtatious postman and his two idiotic goons, one of whom looks like Mackenzie Crook on crack, Bone is forced to escape and defend his home before Christmas is ruined for real this time.BONE ALONE is not a good movie in any conventional way and any enjoyment that can be extracted from it is mostly of the 'so bad it's good' variety though the pure sadism of the crafty canines and the absurd plotting are particularly entertaining. There's also the comically cheap special effects, awful performances, homages to popular culture - hey, remember that scene in DIE HARD where John McClane is crawling around a ventilation shaft? This movie remembers it too - and Z-list actor Kevin Sorbo, popping up as an evil dog catcher named Quentin in order to recreate memorable scenes from JAWS and then disappear from the movie, never to be heard from again. A jaw dropping SIXTH SENSE style twist ending reveals that Dad's father is Santa and also he has never been to his son's house for some reason. We love to hear from our listeners! In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite TV series: the British television mockumentary sitcom "The Office" created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series follows the day-to-day office employees in the Slough branch of the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company. The series stars Ricky Gervais as David Brent, the general manager of the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg - a mostly ineffective boss, who is occasionally clueless to the effect of his own political incorrectness, his rudeness, his selfishness, his awkwardness, and his narcissism; but who is secretly insecure about himself, which causes him to sometimes make jokes at the expense of other people. Martin Freeman stars as Tim Canterbury, a sales representative at the Slough branch of the Wernham Hogg paper company - who is both witty and considerate, and who enjoys nothing more than playing practical jokes at the expense of fellow salesman and "team leader" Gareth Keenan (played by Mackenzie Crook) with the office's receptionist Dawn Tinsley (played by Lucy Davis), who Tim has a crush on but who is engaged to marry her fiancé, Lee (played by Joel Beckett). The series also stars Stirling Gallacher as Jennifer Taylor-Clarke, Oliver Chris as Ricky Howard, Ralph Ineson as Chris Finch, Patrick Baladi as Neil Godwin, as well as a wonderful cast of supporting actors who portray some incredibly memorable characters in The Office. Mark also talks about the 2016 British mockumentary comedy film "David Brent: Life on the Road", a direct sequel to "The Office" TV series, which follows Ricky Gervais' David Brent - now a cleaning products salesperson - as he attempts to live out his dream of being a rock star. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Mackenzie Crook talks about Saucy Nancy, the latest episode in his festive revivals of the children’s TV series Worzel Gummidge, which originally aired in the late 1970s. Saucy Nancy sees the children visit a scrapyard, where they meet Worzel's old friend Saucy Nancy. She's a carved ship’s figurehead, and wants their help to get back to the sea. As tensions run high in houses all over the country where people are cooped up over the Christmas period, writer and board gamer Natasha Hodgson reveals the world of cooperative board games: games where the players work together towards a goal, rather than trying to crush or bankrupt your dear mum. With many titles and styles to choose from, are the days of shouting over the Monopoly board over? In May, comedian Janey Godley was one of the Scottish actors and writers who took part in the National Theatre of Scotland’s project Scenes for Survival. Janey’s video short featured her as a character called Betty whose difficult relationship with her husband came to a head under Lockdown. It was one of the most viewed in the series and led to a follow-up. Now for Christmas and New Year, Janey revisits Betty. As festive party season is well and truly cancelled this year, Front Row is celebrating the best parties in culture. Today it’s Vice’s Zing Tsjeng on Euphoria and the dark side of teen parties. “Tea without sugar is just vegetable soup” This week we’re watching the first series of Mackenzie Crook’s 2014 sitcom ‘Detectorists’ and, perhaps predictably, it’s a complete love-in. With no-one willing to criticise such a brilliant series just for the sake of it, Andy talks about how the show made him almost glad to have a cold, Rachael tells of how she overcame her initial misgivings about where the romantic subplot was heading and Paul once again proves that his aversion to recommendations is doing him more harm than good. The team discuss an encouraging trend towards more progressive attitudes in modern sitcoms and how ‘Detectorists’ refusal to undercut moments of genuine sentiment make it a truly adorable series. Meanwhile, Paul manages to get in another reference to ‘Horrible Histories’. And just what is a “Detoctorate”? Find out by downloading this episode. Elsewhere, Andy takes an epic look at the more experimental side of sitcoms with reference to ‘I Love Lucy’, ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’, ‘MASH’ and ‘The Young Ones’. Alia Shawkat came by the Bullseye studios and holy moly, what a brilliant, funny human being! You know her as Maeby Fünke from TV's Arrested Development, which just dropped its fifth season. She also leads the TBS series Search Party these days. But Alia just starred in a really interesting film - it's called Duck Butter, and it tells the story of two women who fall in love and decide to spend the next 24 hours together, awake and totally present. Then, Mackenzie Crook. You've seen him before - maybe it was as Gareth on the original UK version of The Office. Or maybe you saw him in Pirates of the Caribbean or Game of Thrones. But his passion project is Detectorists - a three season British show he stars in and create. It's finally come to the states in its entirety via Acorn TV. It's a show about metal detecting, relationships, and the English Countryside and it's one of our favorite things on air. Finally - we know nobody can break the laws of physics. But if we had to pick one person who might be able to, it'd be NFL running back Barry Sanders. Jesse tells you why.
