Okay.. our top story this week: XX Another indication for Mounjaro – the FDA approved it to lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events (MACE), including CV death, non-fatal heart attack, or non-fatal stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk for these events. Mounjaro – the brand name of tirzepatide - is already approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults and children 10 years of age and older with type 2 diabetes. The approval was based on results from the largest and longest tirzepatide study to date, enrolling more than 13,000 participants across 30 countries over more than four and a half years. In the trial, Mounjaro demonstrated non-inferiority to Trulicity (dulaglutide), a GLP-1 treatment with established cardiovascular benefit, with an 8% lower rate of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke (MACE-3). The estimated hazard ratio for time to first MACE was 0.92 (95.3% CI: 0.83, 1.01) for Mounjaro compared to Trulicity (dulaglutide). https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fda-approves-lillys-mounjaro-tirzepatide-to-reduce-cardiovascular-risk-in-adults-with-type-2-diabetes-302862415.html XX The FDA approves the Libre Duo – the first device designed to continuously monitor both blood sugar levels and ketone levels in people with diabetes. The Libre Duo 10-Day Continuous Dual Glucose Ketone Monitoring System is now approved for those ages 2 and older. Until now, the agency said, people had to monitor ketone levels with separate tests that only provided a single measurement at one point in time. The new system combines blood sugar and ketone tests and monitors them continuously. Readings -- and alerts in case of dangerous trends -- are sent wirelessly to a smartphone app. The FDA previously granted "breakthrough device" status to the system, which is meant to expedite the device's development and review. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2026/08/25/fda-oks-blood-sugar-ketone-monitor/5521787688375/ XX Diabetes tech firms Dexcom and Abbott are watching closely for a Medicare coverage expansion that could significantly broaden access to their glucose sensors. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is expected to expand Medicare coverage of continuous glucose monitors to people with diabetes who do not take insulin. Currently, coverage is limited to people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who take insulin or have a history of problematic low blood sugar. Dexcom CEO Jake Leach told investors in a late July earnings call that the company expects to hear back from the CMS before the end of the year, with coverage going into effect in mid-2027.     Dexcom presented results of a randomized, controlled trial earlier this summer at the American Diabetes Association's Scientific Sessions that it expects will support the CMS' decision. The 26-week study found that people who used a CGM had a larger hemoglobin A1C reduction than the control group and spent five more hours per day in a normal glucose range than the control group. https://www.medtechdive.com/news/dexcom-abbott-await-medicare-coverage-expansion-for-cgms/828775/ XX A new study suggests continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) may offer benefits for people with type 1 diabetes that go beyond improving blood sugar and reducing hypoglycemia.   Researchers analyzed health records from more than 8,400 adults with type 1 diabetes receiving care through the Veterans Health Administration. Over one to four years of follow-up, people who started using a CGM had a 10% to 16% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those who did not use one.   The association appeared strongest among people over age 65 and those who were not using insulin pumps. Researchers did not find meaningful differences based on A1C, race or ethnicity, or frailty.   Importantly, this was an observational study using medical records, not a randomized clinical trial, so it cannot prove that CGM use directly caused the lower death rate. Research published in JAMA finds that this wellness trend isn't helpful for people without a diabetes diagnosis. They found that the strongest evidence for CGM use is for people who are already living with diabetes, but not for those without the condition who use them for wellness purposes. It's also worth noting, though, that this new study is a narrative review. This means that the researchers drew their conclusions from the findings reported in several other studies. More randomized controlled trials would be necessary to see whether there are any meaningful health benefits of using a CGM if you don't have diabetes.   Dower also warned that constantly monitoring your blood sugar when you don't have diabetes could lead to unintended health anxiety. In some cases, you may even make accidental lifestyle changes that could be harmful. "[Blood sugar] spikes may occur after meals, but if this leads someone to replace healthy food such as fruit with unhealthy food such as something high in fat but low in carbohydrate, the glucose information has done more harm than good," Dower said. https://www.verywellhealth.com/blood-sugar-monitor-for-people-without-diabetes-12058575   XX   Could metformin somehow influence the biological processes that drive aging? A new review found evidence that metformin may affect several key features of aging, including how cells use energy, inflammation, cellular damage and even some changes in gene activity. Animal studies have shown longer lifespans or improvements in markers of biological aging, while some human studies have also found promising results.   But researchers say there's still no proof that metformin actually slows aging or helps healthy people live longer. Most human research has involved people with diabetes or other health conditions, and one large trial found that while metformin helped prevent type 2 diabetes, it did not reduce cancer, cardiovascular disease or deaths.   Researchers say larger clinical trials in people without diabetes are needed to determine whether metformin can truly extend healthy lifespan—or whether its benefits are primarily related to preventing and treating specific diseases. https://www.technologynetworks.com/drug-discovery/news/metformin-may-influence-longevity-through-the-gut-microbiome-and-epigenetic-changes-416035 XX More to come including more research on a spice thought to help diabetes, predictions about the number of people who may be living with type 1 in the years to come around the world, and a connection I didn't know about between diabetes and Dolly Parton.   XX A compound found in turmeric may help protect blood vessels from some of the damage caused by Type 1 diabetes. In rats, curcumin reduced inflammation, improved cellular signaling, and restored vascular health to levels resembling those of nondiabetic animals. The results hint at a possible new way to reduce the long-term cardiovascular risks of diabetes, but human trials are still needed. Curcumin, the natural compound responsible for turmeric's vivid yellow color, is widely studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260824065543.htm XX New research estimates the number of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) worldwide will increase by 29% from 9.4 million in 2025 to 12.1 million in 2049. This will be presented at EASD, the Annual Meeting of The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, Italy (Sept 28 – Oct 2 The USA will see an increase of over half a million, going from 1,492,825 to 2,055,235. The authors suggest that the reasons for the predicted high incidence and prevalence in 2049 in countries such as Australia, US, UK are likely to be a combination of genetics, environmental triggers and also high case detection rates (due to the good health care infrastructure here and in other HIC). Unlike previous estimates, the DIAMOND-T1D model takes historical patterns of insulin availability into account and aims to provide global, regional and country-specific estimates of T1D incidence, prevalence and mortality from 1900 to 2050. Although the majority of people with T1D live in high-income countries (HIC) and middle-income countries (MIC), the largest relative increase in the T1D prevalence is expected to occur in LIC as access to insulin, glucose monitoring and survival all improve in those countries. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20260828/Type-1-diabetes-cases-projected-to-increase-worldwide-by-2049.aspx XX Early initiation of statins after a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes was associated with a lower risk of dementia, according to a study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe. According to the Lancet Commission, nearly half of dementia cases could theoretically be prevented by eliminating 14 risk factors. "Detecting and treating high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from midlife is one such highlighted risk factor," From Danish registers, researchers identified 132,585 statin-naive individuals who developed type 2 diabetes from 2006 through 2019, with follow-up until the end of 2021.   Medical records were searched for diagnoses of all-cause dementia. AP records the same voice through four very different microphones and sends the files around without revealing what they are. George, Robert, Robbo and a bunch of trusted audio ears rank them purely on what they hear. Then the mics are revealed. The result is a pretty good reminder that price, reputation and specifications only tell you so much. What matters is how a microphone actually sounds on the voice and for the job you need it to do. And just to make the point beautifully, Robbo put the overall winner dead last. LIBSYN FULL DESCRIPTION It's time to Guess That Mic. AP started out making a sample of one microphone for someone. As tends to happen around here, that simple job turned into four microphones, multiple preamps, a pile of audio files and a blind listening test involving ten people. The idea was simple. Listen to four mystery microphones on AP's voice. Don't worry about the badge, the price or what you think you're supposed to like. Just rank them. The result? Almost nobody agreed. George liked 3, 4, 2, 1. Robert went 4, 3, 2, 1. Robbo went 2, 1, 4, 3. And the more people AP asked, the more interesting the results became. Once all ten votes were scored, the final result was: 1st, Mic 3, 27 points Equal 2nd, Mic 2, 25 points Equal 2nd, Mic 4, 25 points 4th, Mic 1, 23 points So what were they? THE BIG REVEAL Mic 1 Microtech Gefell M 92.1 S tube condenser with M7 capsule Recorded through a Grace m101 Mic 2 Microtech Gefell M 930 art Mic 3 Austrian Audio OC818 Mic 4 AKG C414 EB with nylon CK12 capsule Mics 2, 3 and 4 were recorded through a Neve 1073. No processing or high pass filtering was deliberately added to the comparison. And yes, the Austrian Audio OC818 won the overall vote. Robbo ranked it last. Which rather neatly sums up the entire episode. This was never intended to be a scientific microphone test. It was about something arguably more useful, what happens when people actually listen without knowing the name or price printed on the microphone. A mic one person describes as smooth and full, someone else hears as dark. One person hears useful presence, someone else hears too much top end. One listener's first choice becomes another listener's fourth. Mic 2: Sibilant around 7.5 kHz, less lower mids and consequently less full sounding. Definitely not Mike's cup of tea. Mic 3: Subdued top end with a very full bottom end. Mike wondered whether it might be a ribbon. Mic 4: Mike thought this sounded like a TLM 103, noting the bass lift and saying he would probably reduce some of that for AP's voice. Matt McKenzie Smith Mic 1: Matt heard harmonic resonances around 470 Hz and 980 Hz, plus some additional energy around 2.5 kHz. Mic 2: "Sounds lovely", with a little more prominence around the 4 to 5 kHz area. Mic 3: Hotter in the low end and sounding great, although Matt noticed a prominent phase offset. Mic 4: Similar phase offset, along with great low end extension. Matt's final ranking was: 3, 4, 2, 1 And perhaps that is the real conclusion of the whole exercise. There isn't a microphone that everybody is going to prefer. The expensive one isn't automatically better. The one with the flattering frequency response on paper isn't automatically better. And a microphone that sounds gorgeous solo might not necessarily be the one you'd choose when that voice has to fight its way through a commercial mix. St. Bartholomew's story is not simply about suffering, it is about fortitude, courage, and total surrender to Jesus. The apostles were imperfect men, yet they allowed Christ to transform them into fearless witnesses who were willing to give their very lives for the Gospel. As we reflect on Bartholomew's words and example, may we too ask for the grace to stand firm in our faith, confront the challenges of our time, and say with our lives: “Take my skin, take my life; I belong to Jesus.” Even death cannot have the final word, because Christ promises the resurrection of the body. In this homily for the Feast of Saint Pius X, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the saint's strong rejection of Modernism and its weakening of objective truth. He explains that Christian love cannot be reduced to simply being nice, avoiding conflict, or affirming everything. True Christian love means willing the good of another person, especially their eternal salvation, and therefore requires us to remain faithful to God's truth even when that truth is difficult or unpopular. Fr. Chris reminds us that truth must always be spoken with mercy, humility, and compassion. Fraternal correction, when motivated by genuine concern for another person's soul rather than judgment or pride, can be a profound act of love. Following the example of Saint Pius X, Christians are called to reject a lack of truth while also rejecting harshness: true love neither sacrifices truth for niceness nor uses truth without mercy, but lovingly guides souls toward conversion, reconciliation with God, and salvation. By the end of this century, half of the world's 7,000 languages could be gone. On this episode of Unpacked, host Aislyn Greene hands the mic to travel writer Lucy Kehoe for a conversation about saving language with journalist Sophia Smith Galer, author of the new book How to Kill a Language. Wealth itself is not a sin, but attachment to money, possessions, comfort, and self-sufficiency can slowly replace our dependence on God. The Gospel challenges us to examine where we place our security: in what we possess, or in Jesus Christ? The central lesson can be expressed simply: Have things, but possess nothing in your heart except God. We can receive material blessings with gratitude without allowing them to replace the Lord. And if God calls us to surrender something—money, possessions, comfort, status, or another attachment—we should be willing to give it up. Wealth can make salvation more difficult when it creates pride, selfishness, attachment, or the illusion that we do not need God. But wealth can also become an instrument of love when it is placed at God's service. Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC's homily centered on the call to give everything to the Lord and the profound joy that comes from responding wholeheartedly to His voice. Jesus tells us that if we wish to be perfect, we must be willing to give up everything and follow Him. The question for each of us is: What am I still holding on to that prevents me from giving myself completely to the Lord? Fr. Tyler pointed to St. Anthony of the Desert as a powerful example. St. Anthony heard Christ's invitation and took it seriously, giving away his possessions and ultimately offering his entire life to Christ. His response became an example of the radical surrender found in monasticism and consecrated life—giving everything to the Father. Fr. Tyler connected this with the Marian Fathers and the beautiful renewal of vows celebrated last weekend, when the Marians gathered around the sanctuary and renewed their offering of themselves to God. But this invitation to surrender is not only for those in consecrated life. Each of us should ask: What am I holding on to? What is the Lord asking me to place into His hands? It might be possessions, but it can also be our plans, comfort, control, pride, fears, resentments, ambitions, relationships, or simply our desire to have things our own way. The central question of the homily, then, is deeply personal: What are you holding on to that you need to give up for the Lord? St. Anthony gave everything. The Marians express this surrender through their vows. Each of us is called to surrender according to our own vocation. The more freely we give ourselves to the Lord, the more freely He can fill us with the fruits of His Kingdom—especially that supernatural joy, the joy that no one can take away. In this powerful homily, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the extraordinary faith of the Gentile woman who humbly approached Jesus, trusting that even the “scraps” from the Master's table were enough to bring healing and mercy.Her faith reminds us that great faith can be found in unexpected places. Although she had not received the spiritual privileges given to Israel, she continued to believe—even when Jesus seemed silent. She did not walk away. She remained humble, persistent, and confident in His mercy.Fr. Chris challenges us as Catholics to recognize how much we have received: the Eucharist, Confession, the Sacraments, the Blessed Mother, and countless graces from God. Yet sometimes those who have received less appear to trust God more deeply and make greater use of the faith they have been given.When God seems silent, do not stop praying. His silence does not mean He has abandoned or ignored us. Sometimes He is strengthening, testing, and purifying our faith, teaching us to trust Him more completely.The Gentile woman was willing to wait for the scraps—but what she received was the abundant mercy of Christ.May we never take God's gifts for granted. May we approach His table with gratitude, humility, and persistent faith, remembering that Jesus is the Bread of Life, and even the smallest gift of His grace can transform our lives and lead us toward eternal life.

In today's homily, Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC, reflects on one of the central teachings of Jesus: forgiveness without limits. Because God has forgiven us first, we are called to forgive our brothers and sisters from the heart; not just with our lips. Forgiveness does not justify the wrong that was done, but it frees us from anger, resentment, and the wounds of the past. Fr. Anthony encourages us to make forgiveness a daily practice, asking God for the grace to forgive others as Christ forgives us. This teaching is especially important in a culture where relationships can easily be broken—siblings stop speaking to one another, children become estranged from parents, coworkers hold grudges, and people may quickly reject those who have hurt or offended them. Past wounds can continue to affect our present and future when we allow resentment to remain in our hearts. Fr. Anthony encourages us to make forgiveness a daily spiritual practice. Every evening we can examine our conscience: Did I sin against someone today? Is there someone I am refusing to forgive? We can ask God for forgiveness and for the grace to forgive others, praying with Jesus: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” We can bring specific people before the Lord; family members, friends, coworkers, or anyone who has wounded us—and choose again to forgive them. Massachusetts, Protect the Unborn: No State Has the Authority to Deny Human Dignity In today's homily by Fr. Chris Alar, MIC was a courageous and uncompromising call to defend the dignity of every human life. "Human dignity is not given by the state." "Humanity is not determined by location—whether a baby is inside or outside the womb—nor by time, whether minutes before or after birth." "Every human person is created in the image and likeness of God." These words are not merely a religious opinion—they are a moral challenge to every society that claims to defend human rights. To the elected leaders of Massachusetts, Michigan, and our nation: laws that fail to protect the most vulnerable fail in their first duty of justice. The measure of a civilization is not how it protects the powerful, but how it protects those who have no voice. The unborn child is not invisible, disposable, or without dignity. As Fr. Alar reminded us today, Catholics cannot determine what is right simply because civil law permits it. God's law calls us to defend both mother and child, to reject the intentional taking of innocent life, and to build a culture where every human being is welcomed and protected from conception to natural death. This is not a message of hatred—it is a call to conversion, truth, mercy, and justice. Mark Baron, MIC reflects on a fundamental question facing Christians: Will we accept God's order, or will we attempt to redefine reality according to our own desires?Looking at difficult issues in modern culture; including the dignity of human life, abortion, human sexuality, biological reality, and the priesthood, Fr. Baron points to a deeper spiritual struggle: the temptation to believe that we can determine for ourselves what is good rather than receiving truth and goodness from God.God is the Creator, and His order is good. Human life is precious because it comes from Him. Yet because of sin, we experience disordered inclinations, pride, weakness, and what St. Faustina describes as human “misery.” This misery is more than emotional suffering; it reveals our profound spiritual poverty and our inability to attain holiness and salvation by our own strength.The answer is humility and dependence upon God.Jesus calls us to become like little children; recognizing that we need our Heavenly Father just as a child depends upon his parents. We are not the originators of truth or goodness. God is.The Father desires to make us saints according to His standards, not ours. He is our Creator, our Savior, and our sovereign Lord. When we recognize our weakness, surrender our pride, and trust in His mercy, we allow Him to lead us back into the goodness and harmony for which we were created.

She watched her autistic son age into that gap and could not find him a solution. Brittany Moser is a former teacher with a master's degree in autism studies. Rebecca Matchett, who everybody calls Becky, spent two decades in fashion, co-founded Alison Olivia, and holds a patent in women's sizing. Like Peter, when we become aware of our weakness, sin, or brokenness, we may be tempted to run away from Jesus. In our darkest moments, we can also fall into the trap of relying on ourselves instead of trusting in the Lord.But our misery is not an obstacle to God's mercy—it can become a magnet for His mercy when we have the humility to acknowledge it and receive His love.Jesus does not come to condemn us. He comes with love, mercy, kindness, and tenderness, waiting for us to open our hearts to Him even in the middle of chaos, suffering, and pain.The Lord has authority over every tragedy. When we trust in His goodness and allow Him into our hearts, that is where the true victory begins.

In his homily for the Memorial of Saint Dominic, Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC, reflected on the remarkable life and mission of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order. Even before Dominic was born, his life was surrounded by signs of a special calling. According to tradition, his mother, Blessed Joan of Aza, had a dream in which she saw a dog carrying a burning torch in its mouth, running throughout the world and setting it on fire.
