My guest for Episode #274 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Dr. Thom Mayer, the Medical Director for the NFL Players Association, Executive Vice President of Leadership for LogixHealth, Founder of BestPractices, Inc., and Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University and Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke University. Episode page with video, transcript, and more. He was recently nominated to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. USA Today named him one of the “100 Most Important People in the NFL.” Tom Peters, the internationally acclaimed leadership guru, referred to his work as “gaspworthy.” Thom's new book is Leadership Is Worthless...But Leading Is Priceless: What I Learned from 9/11, the NFL, and Ukraine. On September 11, 2001 Dr. Mayer served as the Command Physician at the Pentagon Rescue Operation and has served on 3 Defense Science Board Task Forces, advising the Secretary of Defense. Most recently, in 2022, Dr. Mayer helped lead a mobile team to Ukraine, treating almost 350 patients and training over 1,700 Ukrainian medical staffers. In this episode, we dive deep into the world of NFL player safety and the proactive strategies that have been implemented to protect athletes on and off the field. Dr. Thom Mayer shares his insights on the science behind the latest innovations in helmet technology, including the Guardian Cap, and the critical importance of having emergency physicians on the sidelines—a decision that has already saved lives. We also explore the profound difference between leadership as a concept and leading as a daily practice. Dr. Mayer discusses how finding and following your "deep joy" is essential for both personal fulfillment and professional success. He emphasizes the power of learning from mistakes and how failure is not just a part of success, but an integral component of it. Drawing from his experiences during 9/11 and his recent mission to Ukraine, Dr. Mayer offers powerful lessons on resilience, proactive leadership, and the value of engaging with the people who do the work. This episode is filled with wisdom on how to lead effectively in times of crisis and beyond. Questions and Topics: What are your thoughts on the new NFL kickoff procedures and their impact on player safety? Of all the things you've done in your career, what would you say is your favorite mistake? Can you give an example of a time when you deviated from your deep joy, and how do you find deep joy in your professional endeavors? Can you share an example of when you coached someone through a situation where they had deviated from their deep joy? Can you talk about your experience with Damar Hamlin and the importance of being proactive in NFL player safety? Can you share your experiences on 9/11 and the leadership lessons you learned from that day? How did you end up going to Ukraine in 2022, and what motivated you to take on that mission? What would you say to NFL fans who resist changes like the new kickoff rules or the use of the Guardian Cap?

Billions upon billions of microbial organisms inhabit the earth and our bodies. When we get sick because of modern-day medicine and technology developments, we can often pinpoint exactly which microbial organisms are the source of the problem. But how, exactly? Karius Chief Technical Officer Sivan Bercovici and Medical Director Dr. Sarah Park joined Host David Kemp to talk about the Karius diagnostic test and how it breaks barriers in antimicrobial research. Karius surfaced out of transplantation research at Stanford, where researchers learned DNA from microbes is sent to the bloodstream and can then be harvested and analyzed. This analysis has two aspects: chemistry, which is capturing as many molecules as possible, and machine learning, which makes sense of the data. “We all have microbes, and we have mixtures of microbes. And what's making very hard is that this mixture of microbes or self-DNA coming from these microbes, they can be similar to one another, they can be similar to other things,” explained Bercovici. "Machine learning had to kick into de-convolute that signal to tell you exactly which microbes you have and exactly what concentration of those microbes,” he continued. Bercovici added, “Unless you apply these algorithms, you end up with a pile of pieces of DNA that are impenetrable for any physician.”The immunocompromised population is just one example of why diagnostic tests are necessary. With this population, they could have multiple infections due to a lack of immunity. “As a clinician, you really have to think about ‘What test do I order?'” Dr. Park explained. This can be difficult with insurance, which may not agree to cover a test a physician deems necessary, and physicians often end up ordering multiple tests. “This is where tests like the Karius test can be very useful in conjunction with your other tests to be able to add potentially the answer to the question you're asking, which is: “What is causing the problem for my patient?'” Dr. Park stated. With the Karius test, the earlier you use it, the better the results will be, but the results still need to be interpreted in the context of each patient. The test result is not meaningful until put in the context of the patient—what medications they are on, their potential exposures, and other factors. The same microbe detected in patient A will not have the same effect in patient B if their clinical status is different. "It's like looking at pieces of a puzzle, and some of the pieces are together, and without the Karius test, we are still missing a huge part of the picture. And hopefully what the Karius test does is fill in more of that picture and make that picture more meaningful so that the clinician can actually use the appropriate antimicrobials, know how to manage the patient better, potentially have that chance to save the patient,” Dr. Park explained. For more on the Karius diagnostic test and its impact on antimicrobial research and clinical use, visit Spotify, Apple iTunes, YouTube, or www.marketscale.com.
Today on the show, host Dr. Ron Hirschberg chats with friend and colleague Dr. Eddie Phillips, Whole Health Medical Director at the Boston VA, and Associate Professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, about asking not what's the matter with you - but what matters to you, about Eddie's "Bike Desk" that keeps him moving while working, moderate and vigorous intensity exercise, and learning while laughing with his cohost Juna Gtata on PRX's Food, We Need To Talk.___I first met Dr. Eddie Phillips back in… 2003 (gasp), which is officially now 20 years ago when I was a resident, training at Spaulding Rehab Hospital and he was an attending physician. Eddie was then in the process of essentially grass roots education to not only patients but all healthcare workers - that exercise is medicine. Something was catching on in looking at not only exercise, but patient lifestyle more than before - such that in 2007 he founded the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Before long, Eddie and team were developing multiple Harvard CME courses around the world… So it was no surprise to me that in 2016 Dr. Phillips was approached by WBUR the NPR Boston affiliate to host The Magic Pill along with cohost WBUR's Carey Goldberg – This show won an Edward R. Murrow Award which is basically like getting an Emmy for broadcasting. Very cool. Fast-forward a couple years and Eddie joined the very talented Juna Gjata – on a fantastic new podcast produced with PRX call Food We Need to Talk – essentially educating and entertaining us all about nutrition and food and how it relates to our lives - Make sure to check out this show, perhaps as your New Year's resolution (and hint-hint that's the topic of their episode this week – all you need to know about New Years' resolutions, including the science behind it)…-Cheers all and Happy New Year! - Ron____If you are your loved one is experiencing any emotional, mental health struggles, you are not alone and please contact Home Base at (617) 724-5202, or visit www.homebase.org.Theme music for Home Base Nation: "Rolling the tree" by The Butler FrogsFollow Home Base on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedInThe Home Base Nation Team is Steve Monaco, Army Veteran Kelly Field, Phebe Garver, Justin Scheinert, Chuck Clough, with COO Michael Allard, Brigadier General Jack Hammond, and Peter Smyth.Producer and Host: Dr. Ron HirschbergAssistant Producer, Editor: Chuck CloughChairman, Home Base Media Lab: Peter SmythTo Donate to Home Base where every dollar goes to the care of veterans and military families that is cost to them, go to: www.homebase.org/donate.Home Base Nation is the official podcast of Home Base Program for Veterans and Military Families, a partnership of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation. Newson Health has recently appointed a Medical Director to ultimately help more women improve their health. In this episode, Dr Magnus Harrison shares a whistlestop tour through his professional life so far as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine via New Zealand, Australia, and Manchester and his experiences in leadership at Stoke on Trent in the wake of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust's ‘adverse mortality' investigation. Via Harvard, USA and India, Magnus then oversaw the merger of Burton upon Trent and Derby NHS Trusts before the hardest time of his career to date – the COVID 19 pandemic where 8 staff members from his organisation lost their lives. Magnus discusses with Louise what he hopes to bring to the medical leadership and management of Newson Health and the key values that underpin his mission. Magnus's aims for his leadership at Newson Health: I will be humble and led by professional curiosity to learn how to help more women I aspire to be a compassionate leader, will listen to understand, empathise and ask how I can help Kindness is essential and should underpin all that we do.

At least 50 percent of GPs plan on retiring in the next decade according to the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
