On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Jan. 6 at 6 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Treasury has announced that the nation's gross national debt has surpassed $34 trillion. The record high comes after Republican lawmakers and the White House agreed to temporarily lift the nation's $31.4 trillion debt limit last year after the government ran up against its legal borrowing capacity and needed to implement “extraordinary measures” to avoid a default. That agreement lasts until January 2025. Congress is gearing up for another funding fight. Most of us struggle with making those New Year's resolutions stick. This year, add some fuel — or even electricity — to your personal improvement fire with cars that can help you see your goals through to the end. Whether you want to get fit or get out, Edmunds picks five vehicles to keep you motivated. On our list are the Toyota GR Corolla, Ford Bronco, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Mercedes-Benz GLB. Four years after the last census, almost a dozen small communities in the Midwest are going to be counted again in hopes of getting more state funding. Eleven municipalities in Illinois and Iowa are the only cities in the U.S. so far to have signed agreements with the U.S. Census Bureau to recount their residents in 2024 and 2025 in a repeat of what happened during the 2020 census. The first year in which the special censuses can be conducted is 2024. The cities' populations have grown so fast in three years that they are leaving state funding on the table by not including the extra growth. Investment guru Warren Buffett topped The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the biggest charitable donations in 2023, with his $541.5 million gift to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his first wife, who died in 2004. The 2023 list of gifts from individuals or their foundations totaled more than $3.5 billion. Four universities received big gifts, along with four scientific research institutes and a health-care system. The other gifts went to a family foundation and a racial justice group. The list has 11 gifts because of ties. Eight of the donors are multibillionaires, and their combined net worth is $305.1 billion. NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has banned vendors from the Brooklyn Bridge. The change ends a bustling market that supplied cheap goods to tourists on the iconic crossing. Police officers were stationed in pairs Wednesday along the mile-long span. The ban is aimed at easing congestion on the bridge's heavily trafficked pedestrian walkway. Sellers acknowledge the bridge has recently been inundated with tabletop businesses selling such items as New York-branded hats and keychains, but the vendors say the city's total ban went too far. Mayor Eric Adams is defending the prohibition as necessary to ensure pedestrian safety and clamp down on what he described as growing disorder. NEW YORK (AP) — A new version of the federal student aid application known as the FAFSA is available for the 2024-2025 school year, but only on a limited basis as the U.S. Department of Education works on a redesign meant to make it easier to apply. That means that the application students can usually fill out starting in October isn't yet available to everyone. The redesign brings major changes such as fewer questions, the ability to list more colleges and availability in more languages. However, students will get their financial aid offers later than usual because the form hasn't been available. A soft launch period opened last week. NEW YORK (AP) — More U.S. hospitals are requiring masks and limiting visitors as health officials face a post-holiday spike in flu and other illnesses. New York City last week instituted a mask mandate for the city's 11 public hospitals. Similar measures were ordered at some hospitals in Los Angeles and Massachusetts. Flu and COVID-19 infections have been increasing for weeks, with high levels of flu-like illness reported in 31 states just before Christmas. Updated national numbers are to be released Friday, but health officials predict infections will grow in many states well into January. Crib cameras are offering a clue to a rare but devastating tragedy — when seemingly healthy young children suddenly die in their sleep and autopsies can't tell why. Similar to SIDS in babies, it's called sudden unexplained death in childhood, or SUDC, when it happens after age 1. In a small study, researchers analyzed video that captured the deaths of seven toddlers and found seizures sometimes play a role. Now they must figure out why. Researchers from NYU Langone Health reported the findings Thursday in the journal Neurology. A Connecticut woman who pushed for expanded access to Vermont's law that allows people who are terminally ill to end their lives has died in Vermont. Lynda Bluestein, who had terminal cancer, ended her life by taking prescribed lethal medication on Thursday. Her husband says her last words were that she was so happy that she didn't have to suffer anymore. The group Compassion & Choices filed a lawsuit against Vermont in 2022 on behalf of Bluestein. She claimed Vermont's residency requirement in its medically assisted suicide law violated the U.S. Constitution. The state settled the case last year, allowing Bluestein and later anyone else in her circumstances to take advantage of the law. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The falling-block video game Tetris has met its match in 13-year-old Willis Gibson. In late December, he became the first player to officially beat the original Nintendo version of the game — by breaking it. Technically, Willis — aka “blue scuti” in the gaming world — made it to what gamers call a “kill screen,” a point where the Tetris code glitches, crashing the game. That might not sound like much of a victory to most people, but it's a highly coveted achievement in the world of video games. And it's a very big deal for Tetris, which has long been described as an “unbeatable” game. NEW YORK (AP) — A small, rare herding dog called the Lancashire heeler is the latest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The organization announced Wednesday that the breed is now eligible for thousands of U.S. dog shows. Lancashire heelers historically were farm helpers that could both drive cattle and rout rats. The dogs are short-legged, long-bodied and active, and owners say contented heelers sometimes pull back their lips in a move that resembles a human smile. The Lancashire heeler is the 201st breed recognized by the AKC. Heelers' history goes back centuries in the United Kingdom, where they're now deemed a “vulnerable native breed” at risk of dying out in their homeland. HANAPEPE, Hawaii (AP) — A salt patch on the island of Kauai is one of the last remaining in all of Hawaii. Salt makers from 22 Native Hawaiian families gather here in the summer months to do the hard work of making paakai or Hawaiian salt. An important part of this cultural and spiritual practice is to give away the salt. It can never be sold. The existence of this salt patch is being threatened by climate change, rising sea levels and pollution. These challenges have shrunk the salt-making season and reduced the quantity of salt produced. But the salt makers are looking for solutions to preserve this unique practice and pass on their knowledge to future generations. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. Mercedes-Benz has a lot of SUVs to choose from, the GLB is one of the smallest. Sharing an architecture with the sleeker GLA, the GLB 250 sports an upright design and the option of squeezing a third row into it. Available with front or 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it covers a lot of bases with loads of passenger and cargo room. But it is a Mercedes and buyers will be paying for that large three-pointed star on the grill. Tom Voelk checks out a modestly optioned GLB 250 4MATIC with the AMG Line trim package.

[audio] LEAKED EMAIL REVEALS POSSIBLE RECORD TESLA DELIVERIES IN Q2 2019 "A recent email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to all employees states that the automaker may be on track to have the best quarter of all time in terms of deliveries. If you thought that the Silicon Valley automaker couldn't easily top 2018 Q4 numbers, you may want to think again." reports InsideEVs: "Our good friends over at Teslarati first discovered the "alleged leaked" email via Chinese social media and stock trading website." "From: Elon Musk Date: Wed 5/22/2019 10:45 PM To: Everybody As of yesterday, we had over 50,000 net new orders for this quarter. Based on current trends, we have a good chance of exceeding the record 90,700 deliveries of Q4 last year and making this the highest deliveries/sales quarter in Tesla history! In order to achieve this, we need sustained output of 1,000 Model 3’s per day. Almost all parts of the Model 3 production system have exceeded 1000 units on multiple days (congratulations!!) and we’ve averaged about 900/day this week, so we’re only about 10% away from 7000/week. If we rally hard, we can do it! Thanks for your great work, Elon" https://insideevs.com/news/351085/tesla-model-3-q2-delivery-potential-leaked/ CONSUMER REPORTS: TESLA'S AUTOMATIC LANE CHANGES POSE SAFETY CONCERNS "Consumer Reports...has claimed that the latest version of the semi-autonomous driving feature poses "serious safety concerns," making automatic lane changes that are overly aggressive and don't properly anticipate human behavior. In tests, it would frequently cut off other drivers, pass on the right and have trouble anticipating fast-moving vehicles approaching from behind." says Engadget: "The outlet argued that companies should need to provide public evidence of a semi-autonomous system's safety before it's made available to buyers. It also contended that Navigate on Autopilot is more trouble than it's worth -- it's akin to "monitoring a kid behind the wheel for the very first time," CR's Jake Fisher said. While Tesla was still ahead of rivals on autonomy, CR thought that it was safer and more relaxing to perform lane changes yourself." https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/22/consumer-reports-tesla-navigate-on-autopilot-risk PURE-ELECTRIC VAUXHALL CORSA-E LEAKED AHEAD OF 2020 RELEASE "A pure-electric version of the next-generation Vauxhall Corsa is coming, as previewed by this leaked official image. When it goes on sale in the UK in early 2020, the Corsa-e will be the first new product produced by Vauxhall since it came under the ownership of Peugeot-Citroen (PSA). It will also launch the brand’s strategic push towards the electrified and all-electric market." according to AutoExpress: "The Vauxhall Corsa-e will sit on the same underpinnings as the recently-released Peugeot e-208. That means it should have a range of 211 miles, a 50kWh battery pack and a 134bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. Charge times should be identical, too, with an 80 per cent top-up taking 30 minutes using a 100kW fast charger." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/102657/pure-electric-vauxhall-corsa-e-revealed-with-211-mile-range MERCEDES-BENZ EQB SEEN IN CAMOUFLAGE "Mercedes-Benz EQC, which recently entered production, is just the first of many new all-electric cars under the new EQ brand. The German manufacturer is busy at work, developing also the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQB, which was recently caught in camouflage by walkoARTvideos on streets." reports Motor1.com: "The EQB is related to the Mercedes-Benz GLB, which besides the all-electric cousin, will get a plug-in hybrid version too. Rumours say that EQB could be rated at 500 km (310 miles) of range under WLTP, while the GLB EQ Power will have up to 62 miles (100 km) of all-electric range." https://uk.motor1.com/news/350861/mercedes-benz-eqb-spy-video/ RENAULT TO PRODUCE CAR-SHARE READY ZOE EV FOR FLEETS "Vulog, the supplier of shared mobility technology, announced a partnership with Renault, which will result in production of car-sharing ready vehicles." pick up InsideEVs today: "Starting immediately, Renault will be able to produce ZOE equipped with Vulog’s car sharing hardware directly on its assembly line. In effect, fleets interested in car sharing are now able to order ZOE equipped for car sharing from the start, instead of retrofitting the car afterward and save some cost, we assume. The partnership between Renault and Vulog suggests that car sharing is now popular enough to incorporate it on a production line." "By the end of 2019, over 2,500 Renault ZOEs equipped with Vulog’s car sharing technology will be in market, initially in northern Europe, South America and the United Arab Emirates." https://insideevs.com/news/350855/renault-produce-car-share-ready-zoe/ TEXAS LOOKS TO BOOST FEES ON EV’S TO FUND HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE "Texas is considering whether to impose additional registration fees on electric and hybrid vehicles, following nearly half the states that already impose higher fees on battery powered vehicles to compensate for lost gasoline taxes used to maintain roads and highways." says the Houston Chronicle: "The bills in Texas are unlikely to get through the legislative session, which ends Monday, but the issue is almost certain to resurface as Texas and other states wrestle with depleted highway funds as cars become more fuel efficient and federal gas taxes remain unchanged from their levels 26 years ago. With electric vehicles representing 2 percent of U.S. vehicle sales last year, lawmakers look to revamp the way the nation pays for its transportation network." A Green Car Reports Twitter poll last week timed well with this story as I've just seen the results: "The largest group of respondents agreed that per-mile fees seemed fairest, with 42 percent of our respondents choosing that option. Some commenters noted that many states already require safety inspections which record vehicle mileage, which could be used to track the mileage. The second-largest group, at 29 percent, favored the approach that most states seem to have taken (those states that try to raise highway funds from EVs at all, anyway), registration fees." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Texas-other-states-look-to-boost-fees-on-EV-s-13877118.php https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1123208_how-should-ev-owners-pay-for-road-maintenance-twitter-poll-results HE BUILT AN EV IN HIS GARAGE. 10 YEARS LATER, HYUNDAI IS GIVING HIM $90 MILLION "The story of Croatia-based Rimac Automobili, which just might be the most unlikely of success stories. That’s because the company was established in 2009 by then-21-year-old Mate Rimac, who built an electric car in his garage." reports ThomasNet: "Ten years later, Rimac is all grown up and employs 500 workers. The company also recently announced an influx of cash from a joint effort by Hyundai and Kia. The automakers will dump about $90 million into the electric vehicle maker and also plan to establish a strategic partnership where they’ll collaborate on high-performance EVs" https://news.thomasnet.com/featured/at-21-he-built-an-ev-in-his-garage-10-years-later-hyundai-is-giving-him-90-million/ HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC INDIA LAUNCH ON JULY 9, 2019 "Hyundai will launch its first all-electric model in India, the Kona Electric, on July 9, 2019." Autocar says: "We had first reported in March last year that Hyundai had plans to bring its electric SUV to India, along with its plans to locally assemble to keep prices in check. Hyundai isn’t expecting to sell more than 60 units a month of the Kona Electric." https://www.autocarindia.com/car-news/hyundai-kona-electric-india-launch-on-july-9-2019-412829 FIRST DEBUT ON THE ROAD FOR THE CUPRA FORMENTOR PLUG-IN HYBRID The Cupra Formentor has made its dynamic debut around the roads of Cap de Formentor, Mallorca, from which it takes its name. The plug-in hybrid SUV is the first model developed specifically by Cupra and made its public static debut at Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. According to rumors the Cupra Formentor will be on sale starting from the beginning of 2020. http://www.magnetimarelli.com/focus-on-automotive/first-debut-road-cupra-formentor-plug-hybrid UPDATE ON CARLOS GHOSN "Nissan's former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, appeared in a Japanese courtroom Thursday for a hearing ahead of his trial on accusations of financial misconduct. It was the first of a series of hearings to iron out logistics for Ghosn's actual trial. The trial date has not been set, and experts say it could be months away." writes SFGate.com: "Ghosn insists he is innocent and says he was targeted in a "conspiracy" by others at Nissan Motor Co Nissan, which is allied with Renault SA of France, has seen profits nose-dive amid the fallout from Ghosn's arrest." https://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Former-Nissan-chairman-Ghosn-appears-in-Tokyo-13878054.php MEANWHILE...NISSAN IS THINKING ABOUT BATTERIES "Data from Nissan shows the batteries used by its Leaf electric car will outlast the vehicle by 10-12 years, said Francisco Carranza, managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services. Nissan monitors everything from charging patterns to battery degradation on the more than 400,000 Leafs it has sold in Europe since launching the first generation in 2011." reports Autonews Europe: "Based on the average of life of a car at 10 years, Carranza put the battery life at 22 years. “We are going to have to recover those batteries,” Carranza told the Automotive News Europe Congress here on Wednesday. Nissan has been looking at ways to boost revenue from electric cars for itself and its customers as traditional revenue streams dry up in the switch from combustion cars to electric cars. “Aftersales revenue will massively suffer from electrification,” Carranza said. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/nissan-looks-ways-use-long-lasting-ev-batteries COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #434 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 4th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PORSCHE TAYCAN EV ENTERS FINAL TESTING BEFORE BIG REVEAL The Porsche Taycan electric sedan is now in its final stages of testing ahead of a debut in September and sales in some markets beginning before the end of the year. The German brand has the EV on the road in 30 countries to make sure it can withstand any conditions." says Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com: "The EV has covered 3.7 million miles of testing in the real world and 6.2 million additional miles of virtual testing. This work included using a driving simulator to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and the testers allegedly managed a sub-eight-minute lap time." Spec reminder: 0-60 in 3.5 and 310 miles or 500km on a charge, with 800volt battery so it can charge faster than any other EV on the market. 350kW where you can find a charger. User Fabian on the InsideEVs.com Forum: "Frankly, when the Taycan hit’s the market, II feel like Tesla has to seriously step up the next generation MS (terms of quality, luxury, options, etc.) to diversify from the M3 or discontinue the MS and fully focus on the M3 instead (which is in a different vehicle class than the Taycan)." https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-ev-final-testing/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQB CAUGHT TESTING AS ELECTRIC GLB “We've seen the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLB in spy shots before...but a new set of spy photos gives us yet another reason to love it: an all-electric powertrain." says Autoblog today who have their hands on some new spy shots of the car in full-on camo, "The giveaway here is the "Electric" sticker on the windshield, warning potential first responders of a high-voltage risk. Our spy shooter cites info from "factory insiders" giving the EQB a driving range of up to 310 miles on a single charge. This would likely end up being called the EQB, to follow the EQC in Mercedes-Benz's new all-electric lineup. The eventual look of the EQB could get more of its own styling to distinguish it from the internal-combustion versions of the GLB." In other words that boxy utilitarian shape which so many people like could well be kept into the electric era. https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/04/mercedes-benz-eqb-glb-electric-spy-photos/ MUSK RESCUES TESLA-OWNING CELEBRITY IN NEED What is Twitter good for if it isn't venting your frustration online, especially if you're a celebrity who can't work the brightness setting of their Tesla. What's even more interesting is the celebrity-like status of Elon Musk, and if any other CEO is looking at him and wondering what on earth the cult of Elon is all about, it's because of things like this. Where Elon will literally be the customer services person online. Sheryl Crow tweeted: "Help! Who knows what to do when your @Tesla screen goes black and the reset doesn’t work? Return it and get your money back?? #Tesla #stuckinaparkinglot" Elon say it and replied: "Change your screen preference from night mode to auto" You can almost sense his frustration as yet another mere mortal can't work his spaceship. But then he replied with a bit more of an explanation: "Night mode with 0% brightness is actually too dark during the day. This is ultimately our fault. We will update our software so that 0% brightness is always usable relative to ambient conditions." Turns out her kids had been playing with the settings and made the screen go dark. Moral of the story is clearly if you own an expensive Tesla, make you kids walk. https://insideevs.com/ceo-musk-rescue-tesla-sheryl-crow/ TESLA STOCK SLIDES 10% FOLLOWING DISAPPOINTING DELIVERIES Usual health warning before the next story, I don't give financial advice and I don't own Tesla stock. Following Tesla's Q1 production and delivery numbers the market didn't react well. "Tesla’s stock (TSLA) was down by as much as 10% in pre-market trading as financial analysts weigh in on the automaker’s disappointing delivery and production numbers for the first quarter." Reports Fred at Electrek: "As we noted, Model S and Model X sales were especially down last quarter and RBC analysts referred to them as “very disappointing” and said it would likely translate to a more than $1 billion reduction in estimated revenue." https://electrek.co/2019/04/04/tesla-tsla-analysts-disappointing-deliveries/ TESLA INTRODUCES NO-CONFIRMATION NAVIGATE ON AUTOPILOT But for every bit of rough news, you know with Tesla there's something else they're announcing or releasing. And this is one which I would love to try. "Tesla has announced the rollout of its most advanced driver-assist feature yet: no-confirmation Navigate on Autopilot. With the system in place, drivers could have their vehicles perform lane changes on their own without confirming the maneuver through the vehicle’s turn signal stalk." This story coming to us today from Simon at TEslarati: "drivers have traveled more than 66 million miles since Navigate on Autopilot was released. Over this period, the driver-assist feature has successfully completed more than 9 million suggested lane changes. The electric car maker notes that the reception to Navigate on Autopilot has been positive so far, with owners stating that the feature makes trips easier and more enjoyable." "Tesla has also announced that it will be holding an Autonomy Investor Day event this coming April 19 at its Palo Alto headquarters. During the event, shareholders will have the chance to experience Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features that are yet to be released." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-no-confirmation-navigate-on-autopilot-release/ NIO TEASES SLEEK ET7 COUPE, TO INCLUDE NEXT-GENERATION POWER SYSTEM "Nio, one of a handful of Chinese electric carmakers aiming to be Tesla competitors, just teased its next mass-market car, expected to debut at the Shanghai auto show later this month. " says GreenCar reports: "Its latest car looks set to be a four-door luxury fast-back. Nio calls the concept the ET7, and says that it will feature the company's new "comprehensive power solution" it calls Nio Power, perhaps including new proprietary battery cooling technology. The company says the ET7 will include the now requisite show-car Level 4 self-driving technology—easy to include in a concept car that doesn't yet drive anywhere, with or without a driver. The ET7 follows Nio's ES8 flagship eight-passenger SUV and the slightly shortened six-passenger ES6, as well as the EP9 electric supercar for the track." IN five years they're up to 9,000 employees and built almost 4,000 cars so far this year. We'll find out more on April 16 and 17. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122442_nio-teases-sleek-et7-coupe-to-include-next-generation-power-system COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
