GTP host Steve Lowery is leading the conservation today with special guest Maxey Scherr, the founder of Scherr Law Firm in El Paso, Texas. They explore the complexities of an extraordinary case, Mendoza vs. Titan Transportation, where Maxey secured a verdict of over $16 million for her client, Ruben Ivan Mendoza. Remember to rate and review GTP on Apple Podcasts: Click Here to Rate and Review Case Details: The case revolved around a severe truck crash in Dallas County, Texas, where Ruben Mendoza, the driver of a pickup truck leased by Titan Transportation, was rear-ended by a truck owned by DSX Transportation. Despite the defense's attempts to frame Mendoza as an independent contractor, Maxey successfully proved that he was an employee in the course and scope of his employment, showcasing Titan's negligence in his lack of training and safety protocols. Scherr Law Firm secures an $11,005,000 settlement with three of four defendants named in a lawsuit and obtains a $16,857,276 verdict against the fourth remaining defendant in their second trial. DESCRIPTION: Attorney Ken W Good joins the show to discuss bail reform and its efficacy given the conflicting data surrounding Bail Reform and whether it is effective in minimizing recidivism and reducing crime. Some studies show that Bail Reform is effective while others suggest the opposite. Ken has been on several mainstream and independent news shows such as Fox, MSNBC, and several podcasts talking about bail reform and has his podcast exploring bail reform. Today we go toe-to-toe talking about bail reform and its efficacy. The Show was inspired by Elliott Chang of MediaVista Public Relations who helped to put the show together and provided the guest for today's show. Overview: Bail reform on violent crime in America. Some studies from advocates show that such crimes did not increase as a result of reform efforts, while other studies showed the opposite. Are any of the studies accurate? Bail reform remains a contentious subject, with significant implications for public safety and justice system equity. On the one hand, a study from California's Yolo County District Attorney's office reports alarming re-offense rates among defendants released on zero-bail, suggesting a direct link between bail reform and increased crime. According to this study, 70% of defendants released without bail reoffended, with a significant proportion committing violent crimes. Conversely, a study published May 22 by researchers at Drexel University, focusing on New Jersey's bail reform, finds no evidence that eliminating cash bail increases violence. New Jersey, one of the first states to significantly reform its bail system, has seen a reduction in pretrial detention without a corresponding rise in gun violence or other crimes. As bail reform continues to gain traction nationwide, understanding its true impact is crucial for policymakers, law enforcement, and the public. Misconceptions about bail reform could lead to misguided policies that either compromise public safety or perpetuate unnecessary incarceration. We will touch on the following points: -- The methodology and validity of the conflicting studies.-- Real-world implications of bail reform laws on public safety and recidivism.-- Comparative analysis of jurisdictions with varying bail policies.-- Policy recommendations to balance public safety with justice reform. Across the country, bail reform efforts have advanced swiftly, despite growing opposition from those concerned about public safety. The debate between advocates and opponents is intensifying, with each side firmly believing they are in the right. Meanwhile, the public is left questioning whether community safety is being compromised in a game of political maneuvering. About Ken W. In addition, he has written numerous articles on the subject of bail reform, including, “What Successful Bail Reform Looks Like.” Mr. Good is married and has two daughters At the crossroads of this contentious issue are criminal justice reform advocates who contend that releasing individuals charged with a crime back into society for free, pending trial, not only promotes fairness, but also results in a decrease in crime rates. On the other side, law enforcement and victims' rights groups, alongside the bail industry, argue that releasing defendants without any accountability poses a serious threat to public safety. This polarized debate is capturing the attention of both policy-makers and the public, with both sides presenting compelling arguments and supporting studies to bolster their claims. What makes this debate particularly intriguing is the contention between the two sides regarding the interpretation of crime statistics. While criminal justice reform advocates argue that any increase in crime is a perceptual issue rather than a factual one, their opponents contend that the statistics and facts are inarguable. The former contends that crime overall is going down across America, citing a big picture view. Meanwhile, supporters of tougher laws are looking at specific jurisdictions where bail reform has been implemented. They contend that violent crime specifically has increased dramatically in these regions. In a recent CNN story, the former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism for the NYPD cited a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation of its members showed that 81 percent felt that retail crime had grown more violent from the previous year. He also noted that retail giant Target had closed stores in New York City, Portland and Los Angeles -- all cities which had implemented some form of bail reform in recent years.Ken W. Good, a noted bail attorney and a board member of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas is available to be interviewed by you. Ken Good, Texas bail attorney and a board member of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas, heard the interview and wanted to respond. He discusses the bail process, the issue of bail disparities, and how the bail industry deals with risk assessment. In this episode, Hall welcomes Ryon Anderson, CEO and Founder of Ryon Esquire. Ryon Esquire strives to help organizations, teams, and individuals achieve operational excellence through focusing on mindset, systems, discipline, culture, and creative solutions. The company works with entrepreneurs, athletes, and founders, and creatives hire him to improve their mental game and achieve peak performance for their mind, body, and spirit. Ryon helps them bring their A-game to every aspect of life and business. Ryon wants to change the world by leading, inspiring, and challenging the status quo! After losing his vision from a random illness at age 11, he was lost. Up until then, his dream and vision were to be an NFL quarterback. Losing his vision not only took his dream from him, but it also stole his identity. Unknown at the time, he had this drive to be great! He thrives on challenges and ultimately turned what most consider a disability into his greatest challenge because challenges can be beaten, while disabilities cannot. Ryon channeled his competitiveness into the only thing he felt he could be great at - his education. He went on to obtain an MS in Counseling Psychology and a law degree from Texas Tech School of Law; he is a member of the Texas Bar. But it all felt so empty. Ryon obtained these degrees because they made him employable as a blind person - they were just credibility checks. It was during this period of empty pursuit of societal excellence that he started on his journey of self-improvement. He discovered he still maintained the identity of an NFL quarterback. It has now shifted from physical skills to intangible traits, three of which are in his mission statement: inspire, lead, and serve along with unite, motivate, care for, and help achieve desired goals. Ryon is still quarterbacking. Ryon starts with “why?” when coaching individuals and consulting companies. Once an individual and/or company understands their true “why?”, their true beliefs, they can work together to implement creative strategies to not only achieve but blow beyond those desired results. Ryon discusses his background, some of the challenges he has faced, and how the coaching industry is evolving. __________________________________________________________________ You can contact Ryon at , via LinkedIn at , via Twitter at , and via email at . Hi friends! Welcome back to the Composer Happy Hour. If you are reading this, you are likely a fan of the show and/or an avid supporter of whateverandeveramen. Thank you so much for your ongoing support - we really do appreciate it. If you haven't already, please rate and review the podcast here or on your chosen streaming platform (or both!). This is most appreciated. Our guest this episode is Jennifer Jolley. I had a chance to work with Jenn back in 2016 when she was in a residency with my choirs. I was quickly impressed with her as a composer, but also as a human. She is very kind and supportive of young musicians, and incredibly humble. So humble, in fact, that she has an entire blog dedicated to her own musical rejections. Her choral music often sets texts that address a fairly specific moment in time or experience. This is in stark contrast to the "tradition" of setting pretty poetry by dead white people, that seems to aim for timelessness, but too often ends up not being very good even in the moment. In this episode we discuss baseball, how to give directions in California, and why f*ck is such a great word for choral music. As always, if you like what you hear - buy us a beer! Your contributions will help to fund future projects by whateverandeveramen. Jennifer Jolley (b. 1981) is a composer, blogger, and professor person. She is also a cat lover and part-time creative opera producer. Jennifer's work draws toward subjects that are political and even provocative. Her collaboration with librettist Kendall A, Prisoner of Conscience, has been described as “the ideal soundtrack and perhaps balm for our current ‘toxic… times'” by Frank J. Oteri of NewMusicBox. Her piece, Blue Glacier Decoy, written as a musical response to the Olympic National Park, depicts the Pacific Northwest's melting glaciers. Her partnership with writer Scott Woods, You Are Not Alone, evokes the fallout of the #MeToo Movement. Jennifer's works have been performed by ensembles worldwide. She has received commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Quince Ensemble, and many others. Jennifer deeply values the relationship that is created between composers and the communities with whom they collaborate. She has been composer-in-residence at multiple institutions. She promotes composer advocacy through her opera company NANOWorks Opera and her articles for NewMusicBox & I CARE IF YOU LISTEN. Also, she is on the Executive Council of the Institute for Composer Diversity and the New Music USA Program Council. Jennifer joined the Texas Tech School of Music composition faculty in 2018 and has been a member of the composition faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2015. www.jenniferjolley.com All Recordings Used by Permission of the Composer: "Prisoner of Conscience" (2015) Quince Ensemble "Drei Brücken" (2012) I. Imagine waking up in complete darkness. You’re 11 years old. You don’t know where you are. You don’t know why you can’t see. You don’t know what’s wrong? Strength comes from walking through the flames of setback and failure, and emerging on the other side singed but stronger, wiser, and more complete. After losing his vision and almost dying from an illness at 11 Ryon Anderson went on to obtain a BS in Psychology, MS in Counseling Psychology, and a law degree from Texas Tech School of law. He is a business consultant and professional speaker. Before losing his vision, Ryon’s dream was to be an NFL quarterback. He dedicated his young life to achieving that dream. That dream was ripped away! His identity as an intellectual stud athlete was gone! Who was he? Ryon spent years reclaiming his confidence and identity. He struggled with why anyone would choose him over a sighted person. So much of his self worth was wrapped up in physical prowess. Eventually he came to realize physical competition has an expiration date while intellectual competition is a lifelong game! Through success in the intellectual arena Ryon regained his former confidence and gained a deeper appreciation of life, self worth, and self identity. He realized that the only limits one truly has are the limits one creates. Ryon’s passion is helping people overcome life’s challenges by helping them strengthen their mindset

We're concluding the interview that we began on CBC 114 with double bassist Mark Morton, who is currently professor of bass at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and has also served as Principal Bass of the Columbus Symphony. Mark was the first prize winner at the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, and he was the assistant double bass instructor for Gary Karr at the Hartt School of Music. He is well-known for writing and publishing the “Dr. Morton” series of books on the art of bass playing, and he is the founder of the American School of Double Bass. We start this segment of our interview discussing Mark’s Simandl-Plus® approach and how it increases the number of techniques available to the modern bassist, as well as some specific examples in orchestra repertoire where these kind of techniques can be used. We also talk about when Mark starts using the third finger and the thumb on the neck, adopting a more flexible approach than advocated in Simandl technique. We also discuss melodic gestures and when to shift according to a particular gesture, lyrical and technical fingerings and when to use them, shifting strategies, the value of Simandl and how it teaches the “grid” of the fingerboard, Mark’s fingerboard mapping system, and some of his upcoming projects. We also feature a recording this week of Mark playing the Gliere Tarantella from his albumRussian Rendezvous, which is available from CD Baby or the iTunes Music Store. I recommend downloading Mark’s Simandl-Plus® packet and following along with our discussion to get a more complete idea of how he implements these concepts.
