Host Brigitte Quinn began a Friday edition of “Newsline” by talking about college application essays. How do you prepare a good college application essay? Preparation, the writing of—all those questions were answered by Priyanka Shingala, founder of “Let's Talk College.” (00:00). The residents of a senior living community across the water in Port Washington, Long Island, are in danger of losing their home and life savings due to the community facing a bankruptcy issue. Finally, theater and movie reviewer Ed Katz dropped by to offer analysis on the classic movie “The Sixth Sense,” as well as his thoughts on the series “Monsieur Spade,” on Netflix, and the new Netflix film “Woman of the Hour,” starring and directed by Anna Kendrick in her directorial debut (27:27) Image Credit: iStock / Getty Images Plus
Clint Hufft and Wendy Dahl discuss the concept of the "Mahdi" in the TV show "Monsieur Spade," leading to a broader exploration of messianic figures across various religions. They find that many religions, including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha'i, and Sikhism, have messianic figures or concepts of a savior. They delve into specific prophecies, such as the "suffering servant" in Isaiah 53 and the "Prince of Peace" in Isaiah 9, and how these are interpreted differently in Jewish and Christian traditions. They also touch on the idea of reincarnation and the significance of genealogy in tracing the lineage of the Messiah.

When you look at the illustrious career of Clive Owen, you see choices made based on the depth of the roles (“Closer,” “Children of Men,” “Hemingway and Gellhorn,” “The Knick”), not on trajectory or star power. His two latest projects, “Monsieur Spade” and “A Murder At The End of The World,” are quality television series where he's able to settle in and deliver the grounded, nuanced work we've come to expect from him. On this episode, he explains why he needs time to prepare a role, and the “marination” process that is required. He talks about the qualities found in his favorite co-stars, the “heaven” of Soderbergh's “concentrated” sets, how Bogart's voice helped him play Spade, why he calls himself a “logic monster,” and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Grammy- and two-time Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera has spent the last decade building moody, complex musical worlds around complicated characters. His earliest prominent work was with regular collaborator Scott Frank on films like A Walk Among the Tombstones, and the Netflix miniseries Godless. But it was his mercurial work on Frank's miniseries The Queen's Gambit that earned Rivera breakout status. Since then, he's worked on a host of films and series both with Frank and elsewhere: Apple's Lessons in Chemistry, HBO's Hacks. But his two most recent scores, and some of his best, have him dealing with different ends of the prestige-crime-drama ecosystem. Take Netflix's Griselda, in which an unrecognizable Sofia Vergara climbs her way to the top of Miami's drug trade as the real-life Cocaine Godmother; scored like an opera, Rivera's sound is full of harpsichord, lone voices, big breathy melodramatic moments. On the other side of the Atlantic lies AMC's stellar miniseries Monsieur Spade, in which Clive Owen plays an older Sam Spade solving a mystery while spending his retirement in rural France after World War II. There, the usual noir trappings are leavened by a distinct sense of melancholy, lonely guitar strains underlining the postwar fragility of its French setting. This week, I'm thrilled to have Rivera on to talk about these shows and so much more, from his musical journey with the guitar to his philosophies on which perspective to score from. It's a brilliant chat (maybe one of the best this podcast has ever enjoyed), and I hope you enjoy. You can find Carlos Rafael Rivera at his official website here. Griselda is currently streaming on Netflix, and Monsieur Spade runs weekly on AMC and AMC+. You can also stream each soundtrack at your music service of choice.

Leaving Las Vegas in San Mateo, Clive Owen is kind of cool, large helmets and Spaceballs, my attempt at a movie scene, Uma Thurman blowing my mind, more stuff from Bang the Drum Slowly, me being a dick in high school, the all too human River Phoenix, a few great movies about coming of age, badly Photoshopped movie covers, and God himself telling me it's ok to drink wine. Stuff mentioned: Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Monsieur Spade (2024), The Maltese Falcon (1941), John's Grill (63 Ellis St, San Francisco, CA 94102), True Detective Season 4 (2024), True Detective (2014), True Detective Season 2 (2015), True Detective Season 3 (2019), Spaceballs (1997), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Pierre Choderlos de Laclos Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Naked (1993), Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), Mark Harris Bang the Drum Slowly (1956), Dogfight (1991), My Bodyguard (1980), Brick (2005), And Justice for All (1979), The Beach Boys "God Only Knows" (1966), Kelly Clarkson "Underneath the Tree" (2013), and First Class "Beach Baby"' (1974).
AMC's new series set in 1963, starring Clive Owen as the retired Sam Spade from The Maltese Falcon dropped its pilot January 14th. Mon dieu: Dashiell Hammett's legendary P.I. Sam Spade is back on AMC -- and because he's now noiring it up in the south of France, legendary Gallic guest Mademoiselle Caroline is back to talk about it. Is the limited series too long, or not long enough? How well does star Clive Owen contend with the character's, and Humphrey Bogart's, legend? And should we strike until we get the full-frontal outtakes from the swimming scenes? Later, we went Around The Dial with Mr. Bates Vs.
