Rescue efforts are under way in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes caused buildings to collapse and killed at least 164 people, and there are fears the death toll could rise significantly. A state of emergency has been declared by the country's interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, who said 971 people have been injured and more casualties are expected. What do we do when things in life don't go the way we expected? How do we react when things do not go the way we expected? Life is full of “off the rail” moments - John 16:33 There is no one here who can escape the problems of life that come up in a way that interferes with our lives as we intended. •    Illness and Injury •    Persecution •    Job or Financial Situations•    Marriage problems •    Natural Disasters •    Death Following Jesus will cause some “off the rail” momentsLuke 8:22–25 Matthew 8:23–27 Mark 4:36–41 Following Jesus does not keep us from life's problems. Many great believers doing great things for God have suffered and even died from the sicknesses and difficulties of life that everyone else experiences. And these scary and tragic events in life hurt just the same. When life goes “off the rails,” our faith in Jesus can be tested. The disciples panicked... but Jesus was calm. In this they did right . . . when we are fearful or hurting,  1 Peter 5:7 “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” We accuse God of not caring about us, but really it is the other way around. The truth is that Jesus knows what is best for us, and out of his great love, he will take us through the storms we don't want. So the ultimate truth is, the disciples did not understand who they had in the boat with them. 1.  The disciples that they had an earthly, but spiritual messiah. They wanted to be the head of his kingdom on earth. 2. They knew Jesus was powerful, but they were still coming to terms with how great his power was. 3.  They did not understand that Jesus was God incarnate. But we have the full picture...Colossians 1:15-17 Would you turn back to Genesis 1:1–2 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is the God that reigns - completely in control of our off-the-rail moments. We can trust him, and we can obey him.

Earth's history has seen some truly bizarre natural disasters. Take the Tunguska event in 1908, for example, where a massive explosion flattened 800 square miles of Siberian forest, likely caused by a meteor airburst. Then, there was a "Year Without a Summer" in 1816, caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora, which led to global cooling, crop failures, and food shortages. The president has proposed a new leader for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Plus, a FEMA worker starts an anonymous newsletter to share how cuts are hurting the agency. [01:56]  Micah Loewinger brings us the final installment of OTM's miniseries American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA. Micah interviews Cameron Hamilton, an unqualified MAGA warrior brought in to take the agency down last year. When he refused to kill FEMA point blank, he was fired. Hamilton shares what it was like to work at FEMA under Kristi Noem. Earlier this month, Hamilton was nominated by the president to lead the agency – despite his lack of experience.  [21:08] Micah interviews an anonymous FEMA worker who started a newsletter amid the chaos of Kristi Noem's leadership at DHS. The goal of the online publication, called Alt-FEMA, was to get the truth out about the agency's capacity — at a time when it was bleeding staff and experience. Its stated mission is to record “what is being dismantled: institutional knowledge, coordination capacity, and the ability to serve communities in crisis.” [31:21] Micah explores the future of FEMA, and the administration's plans to reduce the role of the agency in responding to disasters. We hear from a veteran FEMA staffer, MaryAnn Tierney, and a climate beat reporter at Grist, Jake Bittle, who wrestled with the proposed reforms. Micah also speaks to the Director of Emergency Management in Vermont, Eric Forand, and an emergency manager of a tribal nation on the West Coast about how diminished federal disaster funding could hurt their communities. St. Louis is not ready for the next natural disaster. The problems are complicated, but the solutions are possible. STLPR education reporter Hiba Ahmad and editor Jessica Rogen walk us through how city government can improve, from better funding its emergency management agency to making mutual-aid agreements with neighboring cities. We also hear a montage of voices from people in north St. Louis impacted by last year's tornado. They gathered recently at St. Louis Public Radio for a special “Meet Me” open mic event to share their stories of May 16, 2025, and what happened afterward.

Lori covers the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz stratovolcano in Colombia in 1985 and the ensuing Armero tragedy. Hannah covers the 1900 Galveston, Texas, hurricane, which killed thousands, including residents of St. Mary's Orphans Asylum. Sheena covers the 1936 Tupelo, Mississippi, tornado that may have given Tupelo its most famous ghostly resident. Hurricane season officially begins in June. And in the event of a big storm, local and state governments often rely on help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA. But, President Trump has questioned the value of the agency.   “I've never been a big fan of FEMA. I like to keep it local. I like to see governors and neighboring states help each other as opposed to FEMA,” Trump said in March. We've heard this from the administration about other federal agencies, but FEMA is a special case. Just after Donald Trump's first term began, he announced that he was considering eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency — the agency that helps Americans amid unthinkable disasters. And just a month ago, Trump repeated his disdain for FEMA, declaring that he's poised to make some big changes.  On this week's On the Media, we present the first installment in a four-part series called American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA. Louisianans wanted change and climate action, but 20 years on, a state ravaged by climate disasters is now ground zero for a whole new kind of storm: liquified natural gas facilities. The Trump administration okayed several new LNG plants on the Gulf this year, but residents are still picking up the pieces after the first LNG plants entered their neighborhood under Democratic administrations. Insurance companies are getting very specific when assessing which properties are exposed to risks like flooding, an insurance expert says, but there's a limit. An intense storm like the one that hit some Wellington suburbs yesterday could have happened anywhere, making the risk much harder to pin down to individual properties, Bryce Davies —climate spokesperson for AMI, State, and NZI— told Mike Hosking. If people didn't address the risks to their properties from flooding and wind damage it would “absolutely” have an impact on their insurance premiums, he said. Insurers would also be increasingly focused on perils like landslips in the coming years. With its mountains, hills and fragile cliffs, Italy is one of the European countries most susceptible to hydrogeological disasters: landslides, sinkholes, erosion and floods. The situation is causing concern for the country's local authorities. Over 500,000 buildings are situated in areas exposed to landslides, and nearly 38,000 churches, monuments, historic and cultural heritage sites are at risk. Our Italy correspondent Natalia Mendoza reports.
