It wasn't the first time a provincial politician switched political stripes in Nova Scotia — and it likely won't be the last. But it was rather surprising when Premier Tim Houston announced Brendan Maguire (Halifax-Atlantic) would also be joining the Executive Council as a member of his cabinet. The former Liberal MLA has been highly critical of the Progressive Conservatives since they took office. And now he says he'll have a chance to make a difference from the Government side of the house. What does it all mean? That's what we explore in this conversation with Dalhousie University Professor Dr. Lori Turnbull.

A piece of legislation passed in 2002 called The Lunenburg Commons Act was helped clarify the public use of a 22-acre parcel called Blockhouse Hill. That was property set aside after the settlement of the town in 1753. In 2017, the Liberal MLA for Lunenburg introduced amendments to that act, allowing the elected representatives to make the property available for development. And not surprisingly, many people who are finding out about this now are not pleased. Paula Rennie is one of those residents who says they are still organizing to come up with a strategy. You know it if you've been to the grocery store or the gas pump lately. Inflation is having a big impact on the cost of living with the Consumer Price Index and food prices increasing by more than they have in decades. While the price of gas and diesel may have stabilized slightly, they are still at historic highs. And so far, the Nova Scotia Government has rejected calls for a reduction in motive fuel taxes. There's also the issue of the tax-on-tax when you add the cost of HST to your purchase. Brendan Maguire is the Liberal MLA for Halifax Atlantic. He's hoping the Progressive Conservatives follow the examples of provinces like Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta where they have introduced temporary tax relief at the pumps. Canada Day is just around the corner. It's a celebration of the beginning of our Nation. Barbecues, parties, fireworks are all part of the tradition. But in light of the discovery of 215 bodies at a residential school in Kamloops and now 751 in Saskatchewan, for some people, there is nothing to be proud of or to celebrate.  The residential school system in Canada is one of the dark moments in our history. Between the government and predominantly the Catholic Church, the aim was assimilation. While tragic and deplorable, many countries have an inconvenient past. Does that mean you can't celebrate the positive despite the negative?  The hashtag “cancelCanadaDay” has been picking up steam. Several communities are scrubbing their plans for July 1st. Ep 280 UNDRIP Guest: Ellis Ross   On November 26, 2019 ,the government of the Province of British Columbia introduced legislation aimed at adopting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP). The stated purpose is to ensure that all laws in BC affirm the rights of indigenous peoples. When introduced, it was celebrated on both sides of the house as a significant step forward. Bill 41 - 2019 passed unanimously with a caveat, that being concerns voiced in the house by Ellis Ross, the Liberal MLA for Skeena and a former Chief Councillor for the Haisla First Nations. In the House, Ross questioned the meaning of the declaration’s guarantee of “free, prior and informed consent” to First Nations over land and resource development within their traditional territories and the need to introduce the legislation.  Ross asked, “If there are two parties at the table (First Nations and the Crown), and the First Nation doesn’t agree, what happens?... Does the Crown still go ahead and make a decision based on the interests of BC as a whole? Or do they just withhold their decision? Making no decision is still a decision.” Ross went on to ask, “Isn’t that a form of veto?” We invited Mr. Ross to join us for a Conversation That Matters about UNDRIP, what it means, its implications and the path forward. This is the first in a series of more than 10 conversations that we recorded at the “Finding a Path to Shared Prosperity Conference” in mid-January that you can find on the Conversations That Matter YouTube channel. Catherine Callbeck becomes Canada’s first woman elected premier of a province. Catherine Callbeck spent her life alternating between her love of business and her penchant for politics. Born July 25, 1939 in Central Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, she earned bachelors of commerce and education and did post-graduate work in business administration before teaching business in New Brunswick and Ontario. She then returned to PEI to join the family business until her interest in politics landed her in the provincial legislature in 1974 as a Liberal MLA and member of the cabinet. Another stint with the family business was interrupted twice by political stints: in Ottawa as a Liberal MP and then, in January 1993, a return to provincial politics. When the Liberal Party of PEI chose her as leader, she immediately assumed the position of premier, later becoming the first woman elected premier when she and her party won the general PEI election by a landslide (they captured all but one seat) on March 29, 1993. After three and a half years as premier, she returned to the family business, only to be coaxed back to politics in 1997 when appointed to the Senate of Canada. Among Callbeck’s many distinctions is an honorary doctorate of laws from New Brunswick’s Mount Allison University. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Pioneer Canadian suffragist Nellie McClung dies. One of Canada’s most famous champions of women’s rights, Nellie McClung died in Victoria, B.C. on September 1, 1951. McClung was born Nellie Letitia Mooney in 1873 near Owen Sound, Ontario, before her family moved to rural Manitoba. After a career that spanned teaching and writing (she was a well-respected novelist and essayist), McClung got involved in the women’s movement. Her efforts on behalf of the Manitoba Liberal Party in 1914 and 1915 led Manitoba to become the first Canadian province to grant women the vote in 1916. A strong Methodist and an active member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance, McClung not only campaigned tirelessly for women to get the vote, but she fought hard for better working conditions, government-supported family allowance and better pensions. After moving to Alberta with her husband, Wesley McClung, she became a Liberal MLA in Edmonton. There, she also became one of the “famous five” activists who fought a successful battle all the way to the Privy Council in England to have women declared “persons” in the Canadian constitution.
