INDAR, "Oxyde". Maud The Moth, "Despeñaperros". Rheia Gorecki, "Rattlesnake". Murina, "No Brain No Headache". This week my guest is the wonderful Eve Gabereau. Eve is someone whose work and ingenuity I became aware of quite early on in my own career and she is someone I have wanted on the podcast for a good while. Eve is the Founder and Managing Director of Modern Films, a London-based, female-led, social issues-driven production, distribution and event cinema company. It was founded in 2017 and since gone onto to release buzzy titles such as BORDER, MURINA, HAPPY AS LAZZARO, WHITE RIOT, WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY and Oscar-winner DRIVE MY CAR.  Two of their upcoming releases were part of this year's LFF programme - Emily Atef's MORE THAN EVER and Kristoffer Borgli's SICK OF MYSELF, which both speak well to the kind of provocative, spellbinding and whip-smart cinema that Modern Films have made their trademark.  Prior to that Eve was the MD of Soda Pictures for 15 years, where she released such indie hits as TONI ERDMANN, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, PATERSON and MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE. She also executive produced Rungano Nyoni's directorial debut I AM NOT A WITCH. She is a regular feature on panels and training schemes throughout the industry, and was also featured in Geoffrey Macnab's 2021 book ‘The British Film Industry in 25 Careers: The Mavericks, Visionaries and Outsiders Who Shaped British Cinema', so it's fair to say I approached this interview with high expectations for the wisdom and insight it might contain and Eve definitely didn't disappoint and it's truly a privilege to count her among Best Girl Grip's guests.

Filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic's debut feature “Murina” won best first film at Cannes last year. Though it may seem like a story of instant success, the Croatian director says she spent years educating and establishing herself. When something happens “out of the blue and overnight, it's actually ten years of work behind it,” she explains. Kusijanovic had worked at different film companies and affirms those connections helped her finance the 2017 short film “Into the Blue.” The path to fund “Murina,'' she says, seemed easier, as she presented RT Features with only a letter of intent.  “Everybody already knew me, how I am in business, so I was already familiar to all of these people that were involved in the project,” she says. Now, Kusijanovic discusses her love for theater and the path that took her to co-writing and directing the coming-of-age drama “Murina.” But first, movie theaters will start to feel the summer cool-off, with moviegoers banking on streaming services' shows, including the first $1-billion series. Plus, former Disney executive John Lasseter returns. Kim Masters discusses with guest-host Lucas Shaw from Bloomberg.

Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović latest film, MURINA, is set on a remote island along Croatia's Adriatic coast. Seventeen-year-old Julija (Gracija Filipovic) spends her days diving for eel with her domineering father Ante (Leon Lucev) and watching other teens party on a nearby yacht. Julija bristles at Ante's heavy handed cruelty and resents her mother Nela's (Danica Curcic) passivity. She longs for independence but is unsure how to achieve it, until the arrival of the rich and mysterious Javier seems to offer a way out. Once Ante's employer and Nela's lover, Javier (Cliff Curtis) flirts shamelessly with Nela and Julija, setting off a subtle battle of hyper-masculine one-upmanship that pushes Ante to humiliate and control Julija even more. Flattered by Javier's praise and stories of traveling the world, Julija sees him as the solution to all her problems. But does his affection portend freedom, or something more sinister? Winner of the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, lensed by award-winning cinematographer Hélène Louvart (THE LOST DAUGHTER), and Executive Produced by Martin Scorsese, MURINA features a ferocious, star-making central performance by Gracija Filipović and the most sumptuous images of the Mediterranean since THE BIG BLUE. Equal parts fiery feminist outcry and stirring coming-of-age drama, the film announces director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović as a major new talent in world cinema. For updates and screenings go to: kinolorber.com/film/murina MURINA will open theatrically on Friday, July 8th at Metrograph in New York, and on Friday, July 15th at Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles with rollout to select cities.

This week, Film Comment editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish talk to a cinematographer who's worked with everyone from Agnès Varda to Wim Wenders to Eliza Hittman to Alice Rohrwacher. Over the last three decades, Hélène Louvart has acquired a reputation for her gorgeous lensing of women's stories and her ability to capture movement with rare immediacy and grace. Hélène's talents are on striking display in Murina, a new coming-of-age film directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic. Murina tells the story of a Croatian teen (played by newcomer Gracija Filipović) navigating a treacherous passage to adulthood in an intensely patriarchal milieu. With intimate close-ups, breathtaking underwater sequences, and beautiful shots of the island where the film is set, Hélène's images give arresting form to the protagonist's awakening to her own desires. The cinematographer called in from her home in Paris to talk about how she crafted the film's visual language, the care required to capture women as both subjects and objects of the gaze, and the technical challenges and pleasures of shooting underwater.

Somos (a RT) as primeiras pessoas a receber o roteiro”, lembra.

Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. There are only a few days left in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, but there are still plenty of excellent films left to tak about. So my job here is not done, and joining me today is the critic Carlos Valladares. We'll talk about the unusual new film Cow, from Andrea Arnold, perhaps best known for American Honey and Red Road as well as work for television. We'll also hear about the Spanish film Libertad, a sharp Croatian coming-of-age drama called Murina, and a collective film called Futura, which is co-created by Pietro Marcello, Alice Rohrwacher, and Francesco Munzi. C., Wilson, D. N., Hauryliuk, V. N. Abstract: In all branches of life, stalled translation intermediates are recognized and processed by ribosome-associated quality-control (RQC) pathways. RQC begins with splitting of stalled ribosomes, leaving an unfinished polypeptide still attached to the large subunit. Ancient and conserved NEMF family RQC proteins target these incomplete proteins for degradation by the addition of C-terminal tails. How such tailing can occur without the regular suite of translational components is, however, unclear. Using ex vivo single-particle cryo-EM, we show that C-terminal tailing in Bacillus subtilis is mediated by NEMF protein RqcH in concert with YabO, a protein homologous to, yet distinct from, Hsp15. Our structures reveal how these factors mediate tRNA movement across the ribosomal 50S subunit to synthesize polypeptides in the absence of mRNA or the small subunit. Munira Zahabi was born in Kenya, Africa. She found her love of learning through her mother, who was stricken with asthma during childhood, and never received an education past the second grade. Growing up, her mother would study her text books and learn beside her -- oftentimes leaving Munira with thoughts of what her mother could have been, if life hadn't dealt her the hand, that it had dealt. Asthma was an unknown condition back in that time -- the doctor's in Kenya thought people could be contagious so they banned those children with it from attending school. Munira lost her mother very young. By the time her father remarried, the stepmother determined that it was time that Munira got married off to a 33 year-old suitor from Tanzania. She was only 15 at that time. Just like that, her life changed forever and by the time she was 24 -- she had four kids. Munira has always felt that her youth was stolen from her -- something that fuels her to this day. Having to throw away her scholarship to Cambridge University in London, Munira stayed determined to learn as much as she could - always reminding herself that learning was a gift as well as helping others. Two qualities her mother instilled in her before her early departure. She took to the local library and consumed as much knowledge as she could. But the roles mounted quickly -- wife, sister-in-law, mother, and citizen of a new country. She found solace in observing her grandmother. Although the woman lost her husband early-on and struggled with it, she never cursed her journey because she had unwavering faith in God. She chose to be happy in spite of it all. To Munira, those lessons shown to her by her grandmother became the foundation of the woman she has become. In 1995, Bill Clinton had opened an initiative to allow immigrants from third world countries to come to the United States to live and work. While working as a school teacher in Tanzania, Munira learned of this opportunity from a co-worker. Taking it to her husband, he told her that he would help but had no intention of going. After filling out all 17 different applications -- low and behold, Murina was accepted to come to the United States. Her husband kept his promise and didn't want to go but didn't try to stop her from going either. Even her aunt offered to give Munira her entire inheritance if she were to stay. But it was not enough for her. Her youth had already been stolen years ago, now it was time to build a better life for her and her kids. Munira ended up arriving in Bakersfield, California on June 28th, 1995. The rest has been history. Now a John C. Maxwell certified coach, she helps other coaches find their niches to make them riches. As the niche navigator, her goal is to help 5000 more people find success through her self-developed, 3-step toolkit, within the next 5 years. - Step 1: Is what you're doing right now bringing you happiness? - Step 2: If not, then figure out what you'd like to do that would bring you happiness. - Step 3: Then ask yourself, can you do it everyday? Munira is an incredible human being who has overcome so much adversity to love the woman she is today. It was an incredible honor having her on this episode of Task Force Zen.
