Shaunak Sen's first feature-length documentary, "Cities of Sleep," a study of homelessness and sleep in Delhi, was released in 2016 and funded by the Films Division of India. The film was screened at the New York Indian Film Festival, Taiwan International Documentary Festival, and Mumbai International Film Festival, winning six awards. His second documentary, "All That Breathes," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022, depicting two brothers caring for injured black kites in New Delhi. It won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the L'Œil d'or at Cannes. Following Cannes, HBO acquired worldwide television rights, and the documentary was released theatrically in the USA and on HBO Max. We entirely depend on the support of our listeners. Mint Business News
Another down year for IT stocks?

Mint Business News

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, June 12, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started: The equity markets remained flat on Tuesday, with no major gains or losses across any market indices during the trading session. The financial year 2023-2024 was largely forgettable for information technology (IT) stocks. Revenues were low across the board, leading to muted stock prices for companies such as TCS, Infosys, and HCL Tech. Mint correspondent Harsha Jethmalani notes that the situation isn't expected to improve in the current financial year. The revenue guidance for these companies is bleak, with growth expectations of just 1 to 3 percent. If you hold IT stocks, Harsha's detailed analysis is a must-read. Now that the portfolios have been allocated, the real work begins. The new government must reconstitute the parliamentary committees that are the backbone of India's policymaking process. Subhash Narayan, Manas Pimpalkhare, and Rituraj Baruah report that major parliamentary panels, such as finance, IT, and defence, are likely to retain their current heads to maintain policy continuity and ensure a quick rollout of reforms. Each ministry has a parliamentary committee that plays an advisory role in policymaking. Those concerned about big-ticket reforms slowing down due to a coalition government might find reassurance in this story.  Early last year, there was much celebration as scientists discovered high reserves of lithium in Kashmir. The Geological Survey of India found about 5.9 million tonnes of the precious metal. Lithium is crucial for many sectors, including infrastructure and electric vehicle batteries. However, the initial excitement has since died down. Sumant Banerji notes that one concern is the location of these reserves — just 50 kilometres from the Pakistan border. Additionally, such discoveries take a long time to realize, potentially decades before mining can begin. Despite this, lithium is the future, and corporate India remains eager to win bids for these mines. While the response is currently lukewarm, Sumant writes that interest will increase as the mines become more viable for exploration. Online shopping has become an integral part of our lives, leading to many malls shuttering and others struggling to survive. However, real estate developers remain optimistic about brick-and-mortar stores. Madhurima Nandy reports that the organized retail space is poised for a significant upsurge, with around 45 million square feet set to be added by 2028. Despite the closure of smaller malls, larger ones are thriving with better occupancy rates and increased footfall. If you live in the National Capital Region, Hyderabad, or Chennai, expect to see more retail stores popping up near you. Here are some movie names for you: All We Imagine As Light, All That Breathes, Agra, and Kennedy. What's common between them? They're all international film festival-winning movies from India. You know what else is common? You probably haven't seen them. The Indian cinema industry has made it difficult for these movies to get a theatrical release in the country. Lata Jha writes that such movies need to spend at least 3 to 4 crore rupees on marketing — a budget they can't afford. Even if they receive international acclaim, some might make it to theatres but only in major metro cities. It's an unfortunate development, as the industry has shifted to a model focused on maximizing profits, leaving indie movies out of the ecosystem. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. Show notes: IT companies' revenue revival seen delayed to FY26  After government formation, focus now on parliamentary committees No white gold rush: Why interest in Kashmir's lithium reserves is lukewarmWhy developers are shopping for offline retail Festival favourites struggle for screen time in Indian cinemas

Lofty notions are often seen as impractical and unrealistic. And, indeed, they're frequently looked upon as impossible to implement given their staggering requirements and essential commitment. But that's not to say that they can't be accomplished with the right amount of determination and a strong faith in the possibility of their fulfillment. Aquest programa pretén ser dinàmic i participatiu i, per això, també oferirà un espai de recomanacions personals i una mica d'interacció amb la gent a través de les xarxes socials.El setè episodi de CdS no té convidat. Insulin Maker Eli Lilly Finally Caps The Drug's Cost In 1923, drug manufacturer Eli Lilly became the first company to commercialize insulin. Since then, its cost has skyrocketed. But this week, the company announced that it is capping the cost of insulin at $35. This comes as a huge relief to many Americans, since insulin has become the face of pharmaceutical price gouging. Over the last 20 years, the price of insulin has grown by six times, making this essential, life-saving drug unaffordable to many who need it. Purbita Saha, deputy editor at Popular Science, joins Ira to talk about this announcement and other science news of the week. They chat about a new at-home test for COVID-19 and the flu, how the bird flu outbreak is faring, what we learned from NASA's DART mission, and why scientists are growing a mushroom computer.   It's Spacetime And Science Season At The Oscars The Academy Awards are almost upon us, airing March 12. Movie buffs may have already seen many of the nominated films. But for science geeks, there's another form of criteria for what films go on the top of their watchlist: Do these movies include science? This year, a whole bunch of Oscar nominees are driven by science as part of the plot. The Best Picture category has three: the multiverses in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the water-based society in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and the gravity-defying aerial stunts in “Top Gun: Maverick.” The Documentary Feature Film category is also ripe for science analysis: “Fire of Love” follows the love story between two French volcanologists, “All That Breathes” follows brothers who run a bird hospital in Delhi, and “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” spotlights Nan Goldin's advocacy against the opioid-creating Sackler family. Ira is joined by Sonia Epstein, curator of science and technology at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York, to discuss these films and more—including science-oriented films that were snubbed from this years' awards.   The Lasting Allure Of Shackleton's ‘Endurance' There are few stories about heroic survival equal to Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic rescue of his crew, which turned disaster into triumph. In August of 1914, 28 men set sail from England to the South Pole. Led by Shackleton himself, the group hoped to be the first to cross Antarctica by foot. However, their ship, the Endurance, became stuck in ice. It sank to the bottom of the frigid Antarctic waters, leaving most of the men stranded on a cold, desolate ice floe. Shackleton, with five of his crew, set out in a small boat to bring help from hundreds of miles away. Finally, after many months of fighting the cold, frostbite and angry seas, Shackleton was able to rescue all his men with no loss of life. Over the years, there have been many attempts to find the Endurance shipwreck. None were successful until a year ago, when the wreck was located for the first time since it sank back in 1915. Ira is joined by Mensun Bound, maritime archeologist and the director of exploration on the mission that found the Endurance. His new book, The Ship Beneath the Ice, is out now.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Multi-award winner Charlotte Munch Bengtsen is the editor of ‘All That Breathes', a remarkable documentary that tells the story of two brothers who run a bird hospital for black kites in New Delhi, India. It has broken records, being the first film to ever win Best Documentary at both Cannes and Sundance. In addition, it was nominated for a BAFTA and Academy Award, while Charlotte won a coveted International Documentary Association (IDA) award for Best Editing. However, Charlotte's path to becoming an editor was a surprising one. Originally a professional contemporary dancer, upon first walking into an editing suite, Charlotte was, in her words, ‘struck by lightning'. This encounter catalysed a new lifelong passion, so in her early 30s, Charlotte made the seismic decision to leave dancing behind and learn how to edit films at the National Film & Television School. Her decision paid off: with titles such as ‘The Act of Killing' and ‘The Truffle Hunting' already under her belt, Charlotte's latest film, ‘All That Breathes', has struck audiences across the world both because of its intimate feeling and universal themes, all of which is fully realised through Charlotte's masterful editing. In this episode Charlotte shares her advice on how to:challenge anxiety about your creative workovercome feelings of loneliness and build a powerful team around you.In sharing her journey from dancer to editor, Charlotte reminds us of the power of leaning into your other skills to enhance your creative work. ‘All That Breathes:' A Story Of Two Brothers Saving New Delhi's Raptors The Oscars are right around the corner, and one of the nominees in the documentary category is called “All That Breathes.” It tells the story of two brothers—Nadeem and Saud—who dedicate their lives to rescuing black kites, a type of raptor that dominates the skies of New Delhi. Since they were children, the brothers have rescued more than 25,000 of these birds, who are quite literally falling out of the thick, polluted, hazy sky. Their conservation efforts have triumphed over limited resources and periods of religious violence in New Delhi. Guest host John Dankosky speaks with Shaunak Sen, director of “All That Breathes,” about the making of the film, and how it's a story of urban ecology, politics, and hope.     Why Won't Museums Return Native American Human Remains? In 1990, the United States passed a groundbreaking human rights policy called the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act—known as NAGPRA. It was designed to spur museums, universities, and federal agencies to return Native American human remains and cultural items back to the tribes they were stolen from. NAGPRA held a lot of promise, but now—33 years later—more than 110,000 Native American, Hawaiian, and Alaskan human remains are held up in research institutions. So why, decades later, have so many institutions failed to return remains? That's the focus of a new report from ProPublica. ProPublica reporter Mary Hudetz joins guest host John Dankosky to discuss why NAGPRA fell short, and where to go from here.   Appreciating The Brilliance Of Benjamin Banneker Benjamin Banneker was a free Black man born in 1731, over a century before slavery was abolished in his home state of Maryland. Today, Banneker is perhaps best known for his role in drawing the original borders of Washington, DC. But he was also an accomplished naturalist and polymath. He was among the first to document the cicada's 17-year life cycle. Banneker also taught himself astronomy and math, and published one of the country's first almanacs. Guest host Regina Barber talks with Dr. Janet Barber, an independent researcher, writer, and social scientist (with no relation to Regina), and Dr. Asamoah Nkwanta department chair and professor of mathematics at Morgan State University, based in Baltimore, Maryland, about Benjamin Banneker's life and scientific legacy.   The Supernatural Side Of Astronomical Events Throughout history, there have been events in the sky that have made people uneasy: Think supernovas, comets, and eclipses. It's easy to understand why. Even when astronomical knowledge was limited, the skies were readily observable. So when things changed, it sometimes led people to see these events as omens. In ancient China, eclipses were thought to occur when a celestial dragon attacked and ate the sun. And in Incan culture, eclipses were seen as the sun god expressing displeasure, which sometimes led to human sacrifice. And in 1456, Halley's Comet was excommunicated by the pope for being an instrument of the devil. There are scientific explanations for these events, of course. Co-host Regina Barber speaks with Dr. Samaiyah Farid, solar physicist and project scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, about what's behind these astrological omens.     Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

For director Shaunak Sen documentary filmmaking is like a “fever dream,” in that when he starts he “sort of jumps off a cliff.” The same goes for his latest documentary “All That Breathes,” as he didn't know where the film “would land.” “Everything that has happened with the film was utterly and entirely outside of my orbit of predictive reasoning as well.” In this interview, Sen discusses the creation of “All That Breathes,” the rescue work of black kites in New Delhi, the challenges of filming it, and the recognition it has received. But first, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni look at the possible exit of Kevin Costner from “Yellowstone.” Where does the franchise go without him?

All That Breathes follows the story of two brothers in New Delhi, India who run a home-based bird sanctuary dedicated to caring for black kites. Black kites are a common bird of prey in the city and have adapted well to living alongside humans. But as the pollution and toxic garbage in New Delhi increases, the kites, as well as other birds, fall ill from smog and other hazards in the urban environment. Muslim brothers Saud and Nadeem, along with their friend Salik, found a passion for caring for birds as kids and it seems like a thankless job as they apply for funding to expand their work. Director Shaunak Sen worked with cinematographers Ben Bernhard and Riju Das to simply follow and capture the brother's day-to-day life, and emphasize the interconnectedness of all things within a busy urban place like New Delhi. DP Ben Bernhard wanted to show the coexistence of all the animals in the city and create a perspective for the audience to see things down at their level. In fact, All That Breathes opens on a nest of rats living in a traffic circle in the city, right at a rat's-eye view. Cows, pigs, and monkeys also live alongside the people, just like the kites, and adapt to their surroundings. Cinematographer Riju Das recalls carefully getting closeups of ants and a bottle full of mosquito larvae. The whole team was rigorous and meditative about taking the time to capture the beauty of urban wildlife in the city, and they would pick up the camera to shoot any animals where they found them. They utilized long, slow pans, a narrow depth of field and extreme close-ups of animals throughout. All That Breathes is currently available on HBOMax and is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. From its lyrical opening shot of rats scurrying across an empty, moonlit lot somewhere in New Delhi, Shaunak Sen's (“Cities of Sleep”) thoroughly original new documentary “All that Breathes” makes it clear that generous helpings of the cinematically sublime will be served up along with gritty doses of reality. The film follows Nadeem and Saud, two brothers who run a makeshift bird clinic and tend to the ubiquitous black kites of Delhi, which are falling out of the sky at alarming rates. Equal parts character study, environmental/ecological think piece and spiritual contemplation, “All That Breathes” exists in that rare space between the mythological and the all too real. Shaunak joined Ken on “Top Docs” to discuss the film's rich visual approach, thought-provoking themes and complex relationships. Sitting in his car stuck in a traffic jam, what inspired Shaunak to go home and immediately begin to research the topic that would lead him to the brothers' basement clinic? In the midst of the climate change crisis, why did Shaunak find Nadeem and Saud, with their “head down” approach, to be such philosophically interesting figures? And with India's anti-Muslim fervor creeping ever closer to the brothers' sanctuary, how did Shaunak figure out the best way to reveal what was happening in the world outside without losing focus on the brothers and their birds? Join us for this engaging conversation with the director of one of the year's most acclaimed films. Please note: we apologize for some audio issues experienced during the recording of Shaunak's interview and ask you to please bear with us. “All That Breathes” is currently in limited theatrical release and will be on HBO and available for streaming on HBO Max at a date to be announced.   Hidden Gem: ¡Vivan las antípodas!    Follow on twitter: @allthatbreathes @topdocspod   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

ALL THAT BREATHES takes us to one of the world's most populated cities, where cows, rats, monkeys, frogs, and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people where the “Kite Brothers,” Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammad Saud, care for thousands of these majestic black kite birds of prey that drop daily from New Delhi's smog-choked skies. As meat-eaters, the black kites are rejected by the city's bird hospitals. Against a backdrop of environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this family and the neglected kites forms a poetic chronicle of the city's collapsing ecology and deepening social fault lines. ALL THAT BREATHES had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and it is the only film ever to have won both the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance and Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. Welcome to the fourth season of Factual America! Today, Matthew Sherwood speaks to Shaunak Sen, director of All That Breathes, an award-winning documentary about two brothers, Mohammad and Nadeem, in Delhi, who have dedicated their lives to helping the Black Kite, a victim of Delhi's ever worsening air pollution. All That Breathes is both an intimate portrayal of Mohammad's and Nadeem's work and, as Shaunak explains, a philosophical documentary that shows how the toxicity of Delhi's air is reflected on the ground. Above all, though it is a film about miracles: miracles in the air and on the ground, giving hope to a world that seems doomed to disaster. Join Matthew and Shaunak as they discuss this timely documentary, which has already taken the film festival circuit by storm, winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the Golden Eye award at Cannes earlier this year. The film is currently on release in the UK and USA and will be available to stream on HBO next year. “... every bird that flies out of their basement is a miracle.” - Shaunak Sen Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com Resources: All That Breathes (2022) Innersound Audio Alamo Pictures Connect with Shaunak Sen Instagram  IMDB Connect with Matthew Sherwood: Facebook LinkedIn Twitter  Connect with Factual America: Facebook Instagram Twitter More from Factual America:  Deep in the Heart of Texas Wildlife A Life on Our Planet: Sir David Attenborough's Witness Statement Our Great National Parks with Barack Obama on Netflix

Interview with a filmmaker who won the L'oiel d'or or Golden Eye in Cannes for best documentary film in 2022. We have a different sort of guest for this episode: a filmmaker.  Shaunak Sen's film “All That Breathes” premiered at Sundance Festival, where it won the Grand Jury award and then won the L'Oeil d'Or (Golden Eye) for the best documentary at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.  You should really watch this episode in our Youtube Channel, Bird Podacast or our Instagram channel bird_podcast because we are playing clips from the film.  In this episode, director Shaunak Sen talks about human-animal relationships, and how the brothers are philosophers who wear their insights lightly. Questions: Tell us about the film? What made you decide to do this film? Are you a bird lover?  Speciestic difference is like jail.  What a line.  Do you believe that? How did you capture the birds close up? The kites, vultures, etc. The blackwinged stilt on the soapy river.  How did you get that? How did it feel to be near the injured kites? In interviews, you have talked about how these brothers have a ‘front row' seat of the apocalypse.   Why do the brothers do what they do?  About the film "The documentary talks about two brothers in a lower middle-class Delhi locality, who have made it their life's mission to save kites. These birds, which have been victims of the capital's debilitating air pollution, are rescued by the brothers, Mohammed Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, treated and set free once they are ready to fly again. These two are helped by an employee, Salik Rehman, and all of them have dedicated their lives to this enormously difficult rehabilitation venture. The work is a quiet effort to document in detail the brothers' patience and sacrifice. Carrying on in the face of punishing impediments, including lack of funds, Saud and Shehzad live in hope with a never-say-die attitude. There is an extremely touching scene when one of them goes to a meat shop and asks for a concession in price. It is not easy feeding kites, which are birds of prey. It may sound unbelievable but the brothers have been at it for two decades, struggling to get funds at home and from abroad. We learn as we watch the documentary that they feel taking care of kites and helping them to fly again by themselves are rewards. They love feeding the winged creatures, and the way they caress them establishing an undying bond is marvellously narrated by Sen. He also lets us into some tender moments as when one of the brothers in an autorickshaw takes out a baby squirrel from his shirt pocket, lovingly strokes it and puts it back. Such moments of compassion make the movie a great watch. The cost of this love is unimaginable; although Shehzad and Saud earn a living by manufacturing liquid-soap dispensers, they are much more interested in tending to kites, some 12 hours in a day, and these come at the cost of neglecting their families. In a telling scene, Shehzad and his wife are ruminating over Delhi's worsening air pollution. While she is thinking about their child, he is fixated on kites!"

Nadeem Shehzad and his brother Saud live in the Muslim quarter of Delhi and run a soap dispenser business, but their true passion is caring for birds. For almost 20 years, the brothers have been rescuing black kites and painstakingly nursing them back to health. The documentary All That Breathes captures the densely populated city, full of creatures and rife with tensions and the quiet dedication of Nadeem and Saud.

Featuring a conversation with Shaunak Sen about his film, ALL THAT BREATHES. In one of the world's most populated cities, cows, rats, monkeys, frogs, and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people. Here, two brothers fall in love with a bird - the black kite. From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement, the "kite brothers" care for thousands of these mesmeric creatures that drop daily from New Delhi's smog-choked skies. That is the synopsis for the film ALL THAT BREATHES by Shaunak Sen, which could sound straight out of an allegory - but this story is far from metaphor. Instead, it brings us close to the ecological crisis our planet and all its inhabitants face and the political toxicity and violence inflicted on one another. It's a devastatingly honest, straightforward, lucid picture of where we are in humanity. And though this film is set in a specific moment in time and place (filming overlapped during escalating social unrest that came with the passing of a new citizenship law in India that excludes Muslims), it is far from elsewhere. The circumstances the film brings into focus, and the emotional reverberations belong to everyone - to all of us. This festival season, I am finding myself gravitating towards films that confront the challenges of living on this planet -  where not only is our ecology collapsing, but where toxic discrimination, dehumanization, and oppressive political structures also threaten us. It is overwhelming to begin to think about the enormity of collective pain and wounds inflicted on human life and then to start to factor in non-human lifeforms as well; it just becomes too enormous to contain, to make sense of, to look at. And that is precisely what makes ALL THAT BREATHES such a necessary film to experience. It holds all these things together in a visible way. When I first watched this film, it was during its virtual premiere at Sundance, and I screened it together with a friend and collaborator, Eka Tsotsoria - and we were both stunned. It's a beautiful film, it's very sensitive, gentle, and layered. But it also somehow left us feeling hopeful - and we grew curious about this - how one could construct a film of this nature and still convey a sense of hope? And as we searched for questions to ask Shanauk Sen for this conversation, it became interesting to think about the questions that the film asks for us. We are far beyond simply wondering, what are we doing to the planet? Rather, how are we coping with what we are doing to the planet, and how is the planet coping with what we are doing?
