Today, we're heading home. Well, close to home anyway. We're heading to Sydney, Australia and connecting with our wellness consultant, Ms. Catherine Robertson. With a 20-year career in the pharmaceutical industry, Catherine has an acute awareness and understanding of the challenges leaders, employees, health care professionals, and patients face in the modern world. Combining her understanding and experience of organizational structure with a background in sales, positive psychology, and coaching, Catherine has a unique skill set, which has enabled her to design and deliver strategic well-being programs for major international clients and support leadership teams in a well-being advisory capacity through the COVID-19 pandemic. Catherine is a well-being and mindfulness coach, meditation facilitator, Enneagram coach, and inner child journey practitioner. She established her private practice in 2015, and her passion lies in coaching all levels within organizations to be their true authentic, empowered selves at work and helping to create cultures of psychological safety to maximize well-being. Catherine's approach has been heavily influenced by her work with Dr. Rick Hanson, PhD, whom she has studied with and mentored by for many years and is also an accredited teacher and group facilitator of his positive neuroplasticity training, which focuses on building a robust psychological toolbox and actively using neuroplastic methods to develop lasting inner strengths. In addition, she has over 5 years of experience co-facilitating family constellation workshops as well as wilderness retreats through her work with Essential Wholeness Psychology and has been mentored by its founder, Eric Lyleson, in deepening her understanding of meditation practices and conflict resolution methods. Catherine is also a published writer and presented her research into the impact of gratitude practice on mental health and well-being at the 2019 Science and Nonduality Conference. In this conversation, I interview my former teacher, Betsy Polatin who taught me Alexander Technique at Boston University as part of my theater studies. Those teachings had a profound impact on my life, helping me to recognize where I was making unuseful efforts both with my body and in my life. I began to understand personal responsibility in a new way and my relationships shifted. Twenty years later those lessons are still with me and resonate strongly as I prepare to release my first book. Here we talk about the mind-body connection and Betsy's expanded model for releasing trauma with her clients. Internationally recognized breathing/movement specialist and best-selling author, Betsy Polatin, MFA, SEP, has been teaching for more than forty-five years. She was a master lecturer at Boston University's College of Fine Arts for twenty-five years. Her background includes many years of movement education and performance, as well as training in the Alexander Technique, music, dance, yoga, meditation, trauma resolution, and the broader healing arts. Her work is greatly influenced by the teachings of Spiritual and Meditation Masters. Betsy leads international trainings where she presents her unique and revolutionary fusion of ideas: scientific knowledge combined with ancient wisdom and intuitive human creativity. A sample of her teaching experience includes Berklee College of Music, Touch and Movement in Trauma Therapy for PESI, Kripalu, The Embodiment Conference, Tanglewood Music Festival, Opera Institute of Boston, Psychotherapy Networker, Performing Arts Medicine Association, U.S. Association for Body Psychotherapy, Science and Nonduality Conference, and International Trauma and Yoga Conferences in the US and abroad. Since 2016, she has been co-teaching ongoing traveling workshops, themed “Trauma and the Performing Artist” and “Trauma in the Public Eye,” with Peter A. Levine, PhD. She also teaches “Returning to Ourselves, the Wisdom of Trauma,” with Dr. Gabor Maté. Betsy is the author of the best-seller, HUMANUAL, an Epic Journey to your Expanded Self, and The Actor's Secret. As a well-known educator, she has published numerous articles in the Huffington Post. She maintains a private practice online internationally. Ep. 45 | Miranda Macpherson, spiritual teacher, author, and leader of the Living Grace Global Sangha, received a life changing transmission of divine grace while meditating in a cave in India in 2005. Subsequently, she developed the practice of Ego Relaxation to guide others in becoming receptive to subtle forms of grace that bring the clarity we need to live the most noble and healing of lives. In this conversation, Miranda discusses questions such as “What is the cause of our being and all being? How do we recognize that grace is already our primordial ground? What limits our capacity to be here, as we are, in this moment?” And she describes how using inquiry aids us in forming a relationship with grace. Miranda is a spirited, nondual, unabashedly feminine teacher who dares to use the word God. Hers is an inspirational path and teaching leading to the development of profound trust. Miranda describes how her own total trust developed through periods of undoing, sorting out, a period of relinquishment, and finally allowing the dissembling of all that was familiar. Not leading with our intellect is what we need to learn. As Miranda says, “What the world needs is more graceful human beings.” Recorded at the Science and Nonduality Conference, October 2019, with Dr. Roger Walsh, John Dupuy, and Douglas Prater.  “Be nothing, do nothing. Get nothing, become nothing. Seek for nothing. Relinquish nothing. Be as you are. Rest in God.” Note: This podcast was recorded live and includes, at times, some extraneous noises in the background. Connecting to the soul is simple and complex. It's simple because the soul is the essence of who you are. It's the core of your being. Nothing has to be learned, only remembered. The complexity comes from living in an age and a culture of disconnect, with barriers created by the mind, and intellectual superiority placed ahead of other forms of intelligence, such as intuition, instinct, and heartfelt wisdom. In this conversation I'm joined by the perfect guide, Natalie Zeituny. I met Natalie three years ago at the Science and Nonduality Conference in Italy. She is a mystic, cosmologist, and the author of Ensoulment, where she presents a model of reality which “explores the cosmology and psychology of reality.” I was engrossed by her book, especially the way she maps consciousness scientifically, as well as sharing her inner experience of the ensoulment process vividly. What I love most about our conversation is the grounded nature in which ensoulment is approached. Natalie talks about entering the underworld in order to confront the shadow, and integrate the soul through deep reflection. This isn't about bypassing difficulty, or cultivating love and light. It's about having the courage to be the hero of your journey, to trust your inner resourcefulness above all else. We talk about the relationship between difficult experiences, such as depression, anxiety, and paranoia, and how they relate to ensoulment. We discuss the signs of being aligned with the soul, how to identify your essence, and the uniqueness of your soul's song. I'm sure by the end, the fruits of ensoulment will be clear. Connecting to the soul is the return to being, the path to living the fullest life on offer; the path truest to you.

Ep. 33 | Zvi Ish-Shalom is a professor of Jewish mysticism, an author, an ordained rabbi, and the guiding light of Kedumah, a teaching out of time and space, whose primary calling is to translate wisdom from the primordial ground of being into a discernible wisdom stream. In this remarkable conversation, Zvi describes how he found ways to map and interpret his own profound mystical experiences, how the teachings arise from the ground of being, about how they might become accessible to us all, regardless of religion or spiritual tradition, and how they are especially relevant for young people today, seeking to find a structure for their spiritual journey. His familiarity with the realm of mystical experience is extremely engaging—he tells of discovering the vow taken by our soul before we were born and dropping the barriers between us and God, surrendering to the divine. Roger Walsh found Zvi's book The Kedumah Experience “the most profound spiritual text he's ever read in the Jewish tradition,” and listeners will almost certainly be excited to read Zvi's latest book, published since the recording of this podcast, The Path of Primordial Light: Ancient Wisdom for the Here and Now.  Recorded at the Science & Nonduality Conference, October 2019, with Dr. Roger Walsh, John Dupuy, and Douglas Prater. “Being willing to lose everything for truth...when we orient that way, the most profound revelations and depths occur.” (For Apple Podcast users, https://deeptransformation.io/zvi-ish-shalom-mystical-experiences-primordial-wisdom-judaism-great-religions (click here to view the complete show notes on the episode page.)) Meeting of Founders and Members of the Association for Spiritual Integrity Forty-five spiritual teachers, members of “The Association for Spiritual Integrity”, met for four hours prior to the start of the 2019 Science and Nonduality Conference. For the first couple of hours, we engaged in a deep, honest discussion about the challenges teachers face, seeking to learn how we might better support one another. We then broke into six groups, each focusing on a particular topic. Then we reassembled and recorded the remainder of the meeting. This video includes: Introduction by Rick Summary of discussions in each of the six breakout groups. (1) Bringing forth women and feminine empowerment. Distinguishing between women and yin-style teachings in a way to not exclude men from the conversation. Action items: to have each day of SAND have a 3-hour session led by women. to have more yin-style teachings on the SAND website (2) Ongoing growth for teachers and continuing education, trauma, attachment, and shadow work. Teacher survey: what is working for you? Online teacher assessment through which teachers can assess themselves. Regular peer-group meetings, including teachers with younger teachers Workshop around developmental trauma that shows up in the teacher role. (3) Creating community and peer support Among spiritual teachers How to include more people of color and young people in the spiritual community, which tends to be white and middle class. Monthly online and annual in-person peer group meetings for spiritual teachers A system whereby teachers can refer students to other teachers, if appropriate. (4) Healthy power dynamics and dual relationships People will naturally come and go from spiritual training groups. There should be a balance between teacher and student accountability. (5) The Ethics of the Spiritual Community Have something like the Better Business Bureau which would keep the data on teacher abuse. (6) The importance of awareness of teacher misbehavior and discerning between real misbehavior and false accusations. A personal or professional commitment expressed by each teacher in the meeting. Rick Archer, Jac O'Keeffe, Craig Holliday, and Caverly Morgan Questioning whether higher consciousness and ethical behavior are tightly correlated. The founding of the Association for Spiritual Integrity (formerly the Association of Professional Spiritual Teachers). The attempt to formulate a code of ethics that might apply universally in the contemporary spiritual community and enliven an understanding of what may or may not be appropriate, giving students greater confidence in their own discernment and discrimination. Ancient traditions held the teacher beyond reproach and students surrendered their own will. This may have worked in monastic settings but generally does not work today. Preventative support so we're not busy doing cleanup. Power hierarchies should not be an essential part of spiritual development and can lead to abuses. Spiritual awakening does not necessarily qualify a person to offer advice on relationships, finances, etc. Ethical training of some sort is integral to most honored traditions. The issue of sexism and patriarchy in spiritual organizations. Entering the teaching profession prematurely. All too often, when teachers are challenged on their behavior, they ignore the challenger or become defensive. How do we offer the possibility for redemption and atonement? Moving away from a culture of competition to one of cooperation. The importance of humility. The importance of teachers not identifying with their role and thinking that students' devotion is about them. South Africa's “Truth and Reconciliation” as a model. Most of the world's major religious traditions have been developed in and shaped by patriarchy. They emphasize masculine deities and male (often celibate) leadership. While efforts to reclaim the feminine aspects of divinity and spirituality have been underway for several decades now, in the past few years there has been an explosion of fierce feminine leadership in political, cultural, and spiritual arenas. Vera de Chalambert's essay "Kali Takes America" went viral in 2016 after the election of Donald Trump. Her exploration of the dark goddess Kali who destroys the world in order to save it anticipated the wave of feminine anger and activism that has arisen in the wake of the #metoo revelations. We sit down with Vera to talk more about the feminine divine, her darker side, and why all of us need this sacred feminine fire now more than ever. Vera starts off the interview with a powerful soliloquy that blew us away, and we're so excited to share her wisdom with you. Vera de Chalambert, MTS, is a spiritual storyteller and Harvard educated scholar of comparative religion working at the feet of the Great Mother. She offers healing process work and spiritual direction via Skype, writes and teaches classes on mindfulness in the modern world and the divine feminine. She gives talks and presentations around the world and was a speaker at SAND Science and Nonduality Conference in the US and Europe and Sister Giant in Washington DC. Vera holds a Bachelor's degree in religion and literature and a Master's degree in comparative religion from Harvard Divinity School. In academic terms, it’s the intersubjective discussion among us all about who we are, why we are here, and where we are going. In the context of religion, interspirituality is the common heritage of humankind’s spiritual wisdom and the sharing of wisdom resources across traditions. In terms of our developing human consciousness, interspirituality is the movement of all these discussions toward the experience of profound interconnectedness, unity consciousness, and oneness.” Kurt and I explore what it means to be interspiritual and how it can deepen our spiritual paths. • Everyone’s A Mystic – Kurt and I explore our mutual friend Ken Wilber’s four quadrants of “I”, “We”, “It” and “It’s” and how they relate to each of us being a mystic. • Scientific Consciousness Studies – Kurt talks about scientific consciousness studies, discussing our basic experience of consciousness and “raw feeling”, quantum ideas of consciousness, and the future of unconsciousness.   Kurt's Website Kurt's Bio Kurt Johnson, Ph.D.  has worked in professional science and comparative religion for over 40 years and serves on many international committees, particularly at the United Nations.  In comparative culture and religion Kurt has been on the faculty of New York City’s One Spirit Interfaith Seminary for 12 years and is the co-author of the very influential 2013 book on the future of world religions: The Coming Interspiritual Age. PANEL: The Three Simultaneously True Levels of Nondual Reality; Don't Mistake Understanding for Realization, Don't Mistake Realization for Liberation. Most humans view their situation in a conventional, non-mystical way, treating whatever happens as concretely real, and to be judged as "good" and "bad," etc. By contrast, a growing number of non-dual teachers and students espouse the view that whatever happens is "the perfect manifestation of Divine Will," or that "nothing is really happening or ever happened." Yet our situation is not so one-dimensional as these positions would hold, and an expansive, truly liberated way of talking about Reality will involve more dimensions. A three-fold model of nondual Reality will be discussed which many have found quite helpful in accounting for all levels of our experience. Reports of spiritual awakenings, once rare, have become commonplace. Modern seekers often find an intuitive understanding of the ultimate non-dual reality or the illusory nature of the world to be so liberating that they conclude they have reached the goal, and that seeking should be renounced. Ancient traditions caution that such an understanding may be merely a preliminary stage of development. Moreover, an experiential realization, beyond the merely conceptual, may feel so complete that one might conclude that "This is it". Some insist that once the non-dual nature of the Self is realized, one has arrived, and it is meaningless to speak of further degrees of growth or levels of realization. Others hold that Self-realization is an important milestone, but that spiritual development never ends. Can we reconcile the injunction to live in the present moment with the understanding that there is much development yet to undergo? Are there criteria by which Enlightenment can be measured or certified? John Hagelin, Ph.D., is a world-renowned quantum physicist, educator, public policy expert, and leading proponent of peace. Dr. Hagelin received his A.B. summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University and conducted pioneering research at CERN (the European Center for Particle Physics) and SLAC (the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). His scientific contributions in the fields of electroweak unification, grand unification, super-symmetry, and cosmology include some of the most cited references in the physical sciences. He is also responsible for the development of a highly successful Grand Unified Field Theory based on the Superstring. But Dr. Hagelin is unique among scientists in being the first to apply this most advanced knowledge for the practical benefit of humankind. He has pioneered the use of Unified Field-based technologies proven to reduce crime, violence, terrorism, and war and to promote peace throughout society—technologies derived from the ancient Vedic science of consciousness. hagelin.org Maharishi International University David Lynch Foundation BatGap interview with Dr. Hagelin Igor Kufayev Website: igorkufayev.com Wikipedia page Other BatGap events with Igor Kufayev: Igor Kufayev with David Loy Igor Kufayev with Jac O’Keeffe, and Francis Bennett Igor Kufayev, in Panel Discussion on Kashmir Shaivism Mark McCooey is a businessman and has been a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for over 30 years.
