Mary Ann Brussat learned as a young teenager how to see the sacred in the everyday, and in every culture and context. When her South Dakota-based family moved to Karachi, Pakistan, in the early 1960s so her father, a physician, could work with a USAID-affiliated project for Pakistani doctors, Mary Ann became foundationally trained to be open to and aware of the beauty in the ordinary. She met local Pakistanis through the interdenominational church her family attended, the bazaars, villages, and people right next door -- and began recognizing the sign of the universal connection in that new land and people. "Our family used to say that every time we left our house in Karachi, we would see something we had never seen before," she reflects. "And it was the little things I was most fascinated by." Along with her husband Frederic Brussat, Mary Ann for the past several decades has co-architected SpiritualityandPractice.com (S&P), an excavation of cultural and spiritual resources across faith, culture, and ethnic lines. The website's curation of materials -- from quotations and poems, to reviews of books and films, to virtual courses by leading wisdom teachers -- serve as insightful companions for those on spiritual journeys. She lives and works with the tenet that eternal, universal truths are not localized to holy places. extraordinary acts, or a special day in the week. Instead, they are embedded in our contemporary lives -- in signs, symbols, poems, music, films, rituals, places, daily chores, and relationships. She believes anyone can develop the capacity to connect with the passage of spirit through the quotidian landscape - if they are open to "start where they are." The crux of cultivating this spiritual perspective is to entrain our cognitions -- a subtler form of re-cognition -- to relate anew with the materials of our day-to-day lives. She shares: "a snowflake melting, a bee sucking honey, a seemingly ordinary (hu)man at a traffic light giving you directions. That's it to me. Little acts. Everyday things. Moments when we feel connected to something greater than our individual selves. Times when we serve others." Her lens of perception shares roots with diverse religious traditions and also upholds secular and spiritual sensibilities. "Sufi mystics share that the fingerprint of the beloved is in everything," she shares, "whereas Islam holds that everything that happens inside and outside of us is 'a letter to be read', and medieval monks called it reading the book of the world." In that sense, the practice of being open to the sacred in everyday, ordinary reality propels a multi-faith worldview. This goal speaks through Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life, a book she and Frederic co-authored in 1996 as a collection of more than 650 examples of spiritual perspectives on everyday experience. They introduced the Alphabet of Spiritual Literacy -- 37 spiritual practices that are common across world religions. In 1999, a Canadian film company turned the Brussats' Alphabet of practices into a 26-episode television series. Soon after, the Brussats wrote Spiritual Rx: Prescriptions for Living a Meaningful Life, an experiential book that helps readers explore practices befitting their particular path. Mary Ann is an interfaith Minister ordained by the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary and a 'Christian-Sufi' Initiate of the Mevlevi Sufi Order that traces its inspiration to Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi. She remains actively attuned to the idea that "in our era of extreme polarization, we need to find points of connection among groups." She and Frederic, who is a United Church of Christ clergyman, have embraced a far-sighted view of their work from the get-go. They arrived in New York City in 1969 with no jobs and to dream up their own careers at the intersection of spirituality and culture. This was largely unheard of -- but they were persistent. Together they brought along interests and degrees in philosophy, history, media and arts, religion, and political science. In 1972, they started their first publication Cultural Information Service (CIS) where they reviewed movies, books, and events. They described it as a "monthly rendezvous with serious art which offers us opportunities to deepen our perceptions, expand our vision." As their creative approach rippled across New York, they began producing educational materials and television guides -- eventually working with leading media houses to launch a constellation of projects merging the internet, art, media, and spirituality. Their work eventually culminated in SpiritualityandPractice.com, which consolidated previous newsletters and websites to establish sections on more than 2000 spiritual practices. Bonus: Enjoy this 2018 review Mary Ann wrote for Bruce Springsteen's Broadway show in New York City, and the sermons on place, relationships, and service underpinning the show. Mary Ann is a member of Judson Memorial Church, a United Church of Christ congregation in New York City. Judson's long-standing commitment to arts and social justice for LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities bears special meaning for her. The Brussats live in Pilgrim Place, an intentional community in Claremont, California, since 2015, together with their Maine Coon cats, Rumi and Shams. Come join us for a call with this explorer, culture-shaper, and practitioner of everyday sacred adventures. The call will be moderated by Charles Gibbs, an Episcopal priest and Sufi by adoption and Janessa Gans Wilder, a CIA officer turned peacebuilder.

Did you know that Magic is rooted in humanity's oldest religion, shamanism? Or that it was the primary practice of the Euro-Indigenous peoples? One of the most surprising things I learned from this week's episode about Magic is realizing I have been practicing magic without even knowing it, and I bet you have been too! That's why I am so excited to share this fascinating interview with you with this week's special guest, Phyllis Curott, author of Spells for Living Well. Here's a little information about her: A spiritual pioneer, Phyllis Curott is an attorney, writer and one of America's first public Witches. Her 5 international best-selling books have been published in 14 languages, making her the most widely published Wiccan author. Phyllis received the 2018 Service to Humanity Award from the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary and the 2020 Person of the Year Award from Kindred Spirit. Phyllis was the first Wiccan Trustee of the Parliament of the World's Religions, and was elected Vice Chair of the 2015 Parliament, creating the Women's Assembly, and served as the Program Chair for the historic 2021 Parliament attended by Patriarch Bartholomew of the Eastern Orthodox Church and blessed by Pope Francis. Her YouTube series on Wicca has almost 3 million views. Phyllis continues to write, teach, and lecture internationally on the embodied spiritual wisdom of Mother Earth, Nature's "secret magic" and why the world needs its Witches. In this episode, Phyllis will share her journey from lawyer to priestess, and how you can begin to claim your own inner priestess by connecting to the magic of the natural world. We also talk about why now, more than ever, the earth needs all of us to reclaim our ‘inner witch.' To receive Phyllis' free gift, A Spell to Live In Harmony, click here - https://www.phylliscurott.com/well Key Learnings: Magic and miracles are the same. Both require us to connect to and be open to receiving the benevolent energy that is life. The word witch is from wicce (pronounced witch-a) which means wise one. Witchcraft, therefore, is the craft of the wise. It includes being a healer, midwife, conductor of ceremonies, interpreter of dreams, and one who is connected to both the spirit world and the natural world. Magic is not about manipulating supernatural forces, or Nature, or treating the world like an inanimate vending machine. Magic is not about seek to have power of Creation, or the living beings who live with us, or the forces that make it all work. That approach is un-natural. Cast spells to discover what the wicces knew: Magic is the source that creates, the force that unites, the flow of divine energy into form and form into energy in a regenerating dance that creates and sustains and re-creates life. “Cast spells as spiritual practices and you'll discover that all spells are, in one way or another, love spells.” Phyllis Curott Click here to receive the FREE Gift – A spell to live in harmony To purchase Phyllis' book Spells for Living Well, click here To learn more about Phyllis Curott's work and teachings, click here If you love the image on the wall behind me of Mother Mary Blessing the World, you can order your own museum quality copy at www.deepaliu.com

Sandra considers herself to be all things spiritual, then clarifies she is not a part of any religious body. As a spiritual councillor, nondenominational minister, actor, singer, shaman, wedding officiant and more, she sees her role as a spiritual councillor that supports one quest to find and experience a deeper meaning in life, death, and marriage ceremonies. She is vibrant, kind, articulate, fashionable, quick to smile, has an open heart filled with wisdom and a free spirit. She lives in NYC with her husband and has emersed herself in many spiritual pathways through life. And found that acting was one way for her voice and expression to be heard. As a child, she recalls being highly intuitive, having visions, invisible playmates and many metaphysical abilities and experiences. As a child, her parents were open to her spiritual experiences, but at some point, she says, these experiences became less acceptable and were placed under a blanket, hidden from sight. Growing up in a faith-based family, Sandra left her church at 18, finding different pathway for bringing her voice and truth into the world. But as in life, there are pivotal moments. Sandra's arrived with her Mother's Cancer diagnosis. As they prepared for her passing, and eventually her death, Sandra entered her calling, to become a non-denominational minister. Sandra recalls the pain of losing her mom. They had been deeply connected and her Mom was her biggest supporter. As Mother and daughter prepared for death, they spend many special and unique times together, creating and writing her obituary, choosing favored songs that would be song and designing her Mom's funeral, a true tribute to her mom's life. And this is Sandra! A multi-dimentional spiritual and caring women of the arts, heart and mind. I hope you enjoy learning more about Sandra and her life experience in this episode of Mind Your Freedom. Her most recent show, The Edge of Everyday, was nominated for a Broadway World Cabaret Award, and the live CD recording is available on Amazon and CD Baby. Sandra's natural connection to earth based wisdom inspired her to add the role of Activist to her resume, by becoming a Climate Reality Leader in 2017, after completing her training with Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project. In 2020, she was asked by thought leader and author Lesley Michaels to join the staff of The International Strategic Alliance of Women, an on-line membership company that empowers, uplifts, and educates professional women at all levels (www.isaow.com). In this episode, I'm sitting down w/ my beautiful Goddess sister, Rev. Mignon Grayson and we are talking about her favorite topic, ancestor reverence. So sit back and relax, take notes. Rev. Mignon Grayson is the Founder of Sacred Mysteries World Wide and an ordained Minister of One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City. She was ordained in 2016. She chose the interfaith path due to her calling to serve people of all faiths and religious practices. Mignon recognizes that there is a common link to the Divine Creator within all religious traditions. Mignon heard the call of Spirit at an early age. She began to explore the different spiritual practices of Africa, Indigenous North America and East Indian cultures. Her curiosity of the Divine in its various expressions lead her to study ancient Egyptian (Kemet) religion as her first introduction to African spiritual tradition. Later, Mignon was drawn to other African religions where she became a devotee of the IFA tradition of Nigeria and initiated as a Yayi (priestess) in Palo Mayombe which is rooted in the African Congo Bantu tradition. Through her many years of being a devotee of the IFA tradition and her initiation into Palo Mayombe, Mignon has learned the deep importance of the ancestors and their connection to our daily life and our spiritual evolution. This is a theme throughout most ancient cultures. Mignon's particular focus is to bring the wisdom of ancient spiritual traditions from across the world to the masses through Sacred Mysteries World Wide and to honor the Divine Feminine through her work with women and girls in discovering and unleashing their personal divine power. As a spiritual evolutionary coach, Mignon seeks to inspire and support people on their spiritual journey by assisting them in connecting with their most authentic and sacred soul calling. As a sound healer, Mignon uses the vibrational energies of sound to bring out healing by energy recalibration. Mignon works passionately to be a constant vessel of healing, love and spirituality. This week, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes Inter-spiritual Minister, Actor/Singer, and Motivational Presenter, Sandra Bargman. After a lifetime of learning about the mystical, earth-based and energetic traditions, Sandra answered the call to spiritual leadership, taking on a parallel career by enrolling in seminary at The New Seminary (TNS) for Interfaith Studies in NYC and was ordained at St. John the Divine in 2007. She has a subsequent seminary degree in Spiritual Counseling from One Spirit Interfaith Seminary, also in NYC.Sandra has been a professional actor and singer for 40+ years and holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in drama and music. In 2014, Sandra started her own company, Sacred Stages, LLC, which produces plays, performance art, and media, as well as her one woman shows dedicated to exploring our big questions about life and contemplate these challenging times. Her most recent show, The Edge of Everyday, was nominated for a Broadway World Cabaret Award.Sam and Sandra will discuss the relationship between performance and the divine, with a special announcement at the end of the show!Tune in for this enlightening conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1Sam opens with the passage “Chaos Allows Us to Go from Evolutionary to Revolutionary” from his book, Everyday Awakening, available at all major booksellers. When we take our chaos and spread the mess around, it can create new constructions of the chaos that allow us to process and work through them in revolutionary ways. As humans we find comfort in being orderly, but that's just not how life tends to work. Things will come along to make a mess in our lives. That mess however can create an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. Sometimes we need to experience this chaos in order to be motivated to make big changes in our lives. Most of the time we take actions to improve our lives one step at a time, but it's the chaotic moments that are real opportunities for us to do something different. If we can cultivate presence of mind and learn to see every challenge we face as an opportunity, we can create positive change. A great example of this is the last year and half, when we've all had to reinvent our lives in certain ways. There can be magic in not knowing where we're going. Go to the Everyday Awakening website to learn more about the book. Sam welcomes to the show Inter-spiritual Minister, Actor/Singer, and Motivational Presenter, Sandra Bargman. Sam asks Sandra about her upbringing. Sandra describes herself as someone living under her mother's dream, since her mother was a musician but became a teacher by profession instead. Her father was a violinist. She was very musical and spiritual growing up and decided in high school that she wanted to be a performer. She was spiritual growing up - she loved going to churches and describes herself as someone who could always “read the room.” After the break, Sam will ask Sandra what her tipping point was in wanting to become an interfaith minister. Segment 2Sam comes back from break to ask Sandra how she came to her decision to do what she does. Sandra says it was a slow buildup. She moved to Syracuse as a child to a school district her parents chose due to the reputation of the arts program. When she was a junior in high school, she says she couldn't imagine not being a full-time performer. She was accepted to Carnegie Mellon Conservatory. She has never regretted her decision and knows her heart would be empty if she didn't choose her path. She was always very spiritually aware and became interested in the New Age scene in high school. At 40, while on tour, a friend who was a life coach introduced her to life coaching and she was interested, but it didn't quite do it for her. Then one day she came across the website of someone who was a life coach and interfaith minister which sparked her interest. Within one week she was enrolled in a seminary to become an interfaith minister. Sam asks if Sandra cultivated any practices to enhance her spiritual gifts or if it just came naturally. Sandra answers it came naturally but she always has had a sense of understanding that it's a gift. When she was in seminary she realized she needed to give her spiritual gift much more space in her life. Around the same time her mother was battling cancer and asked her to be the minister at her funeral. It was a tremendous gift but also agonizingly painful to fulfill this duty. Sam has had conversations with people who have for transitioning out of life since in our society we do so little to prepare. Sam asks if seminary was just what she was looking for or if there were surprises along the way. Sandra answers it was mostly what she was looking for but says there were definitely some conflicting ideas in seminary compared to her personal beliefs, especially with regards to organized religion. Seminary teachings were that interfaith ministry is not possible without an underlying religious belief, which Sandra vehemently disagreed with. She made her own beliefs, traditions and rituals to inform her practice. After the break Sam will ask Sandra how she combined interfaith ministry with performance, and how Sacred Stages came about. Segment 3Back from break, Sam asks Sandra what was the journey that brought interfaith and performance together. Sandra answers performance was always a good fit because it is the background and community she is familiar with, as opposed to any organized religion. Sam asks what ways did she use her seminary to connect with people. Sandra joined a wellness center where she was their spiritual counselor. From there she started to gain her own clients, and then started a wedding business. During this time she was still performing, and she developed a practice combining acting techniques and therapy to help people get across what they're trying to say in an authentic way. People would write monologues for situations they were revisiting, and instead of just talking about them, they could use their whole bodies to vocalize and give the situations energetic meaning. She gives the example of a woman who acted out a serious conversation she wanted to have with her father. The woman was blown away by how therapeutic the experience was. Sam says he has learned from his wife, who is a therapist, that trauma gets lodged in our bodies, and that performance can be an effective way to physically deal with the trauma. Sam asks about the development of Sacred Stages. Sandra says that Sacred Stages is the combination of her performance and ministry backgrounds. She wanted to have a production umbrella that overrode all the things she does. The name Sacred Stages is a literal phrase but it also covers the internal stages she thinks people are visualizing when they are interpreting their feelings. Sam will ask Sandra more about The Edge of Every Day one-woman show Sandra produces. Segment 4Sam comes back to ask Sandra about The Edge of Every Day. Sandra says her life was very service-oriented, and she had an edge of feeling unfulfilled. She was with her husband in the Catskills where she lives and came across an abandoned restaurant, which she told her husband she'd call “The Edge.” Her husband, a scientist, then told her about the “edge effect,” - the area where a field meets the forest, for example - where bursts of creativity and beliefs come together. Hence the name of her show. In the show she blurs the lines between multiple types of performance and her spiritual practices. The show is about coming to terms with chaotic, liminal spaces. Sam asks if attitudes toward the show have changed over time. Sandra says people can choose how deep they want to go when they experience the show. Sandra then makes the surprise announcement that her new show, Live in the Hive, is going to be premiering on TalkRadio.nyc. She's going to explore the edges in life. What are the feelings you're experiencing in life and how are they edging up with your personal and professional lives? Listeners will learn how to work through these edges on her show. For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/VdtQioBtHKE www.sandrabargman.com Sandra Bargman is a creative soul, intuitive communicator, and energetic leadership consultant. It started when she was three years old, marched into her family kitchen, hands on my hips and announced to her Mother that she was here on “a mission”! Every career choice Sandra made has ultimately rested on the ancient Greek maxim of “Know Thyself”, the directive that is at the heart of every artistic, spiritual and leadership journey. Sandra holds a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University in drama and music and has had a happy 30+ year career as a professional actor, singer, voice-over artist, director, teacher and presentation coach. She has performed on the stages of Broadway national tours, off-Broadway, the world renowned cabaret rooms and beyond. (See SandraBargman.com for full resume) SAndra's spiritual life called her further inward, and in 2007, she was ordained as an Inter-spiritual Minister from The New Seminary for Interfaith Studies. She holds an advanced certification from One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in Spiritual Counseling. Unaffiliated with any single religious tradition, she has helped clients of all faiths and traditions (including none) in pursuing deeper self- understanding in their personal quest to 'Know Thyself”. Sandra is an edge walker. She traverses the borders, the edges between worlds, the spirit filled and the mundane. In nature-based cultures, shamans enter invisible worlds to retrieve future-focused information, direction, or guidance for our communities. In our modern world, Sandra's edge walking also occurs when she and the clients she supports, actively seek out the edges and boundaries of accepted beliefs, assumptions and unexpected challenges.

Mignon’s particular focus is to bring the wisdom of ancient spiritual traditions from across the world to the masses through Sacred Mysteries World Wide and to honor the Divine Feminine through her work with women and girls in discovering and unleashing their personal divine power. Today’s episode is all about manifestation! This is a topic that is near and dear to me because, the launch of my new program, “The Divine Divah Moon Circle; Manifesting Your Miracles & Magick” is now live in the Starting Over Academy!! And it’s about you and I manifesting the life we want in 2020. Well, in order to really talk about this topic and bring some light to it, I called in my beautiful Goddess sister Rev. Mignon Grayson. She is the author of “The Art of Manifestation”. Now available for purchase on Kindle. Click the link to purchase your copy: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZZLS5ST Not only is she the author of this book but she is a divine teacher and manifester. So I HAD to get her to speak with us about manifestation. Mignon’s particular focus is to bring the wisdom of ancient spiritual traditions from across the world to the masses through Sacred Mysteries World Wide and to honor the Divine Feminine through her work with women and girls in discovering and unleashing their personal divine power. She’s currently offering: Offering Free downloadable guide to Manifestation Mindset Guidebook. This helps to identify ways in which to modify thoughts to support abundance. Also offering free 15-minute Spiritual Life coaching sessions which help people identify their spiritual values and shape a spiritual life that really resonates, supports and satisfies them. Also to help with ancestor connection and reverence should that be part of the journey they wish to go on In the spring Mignon is launching a few classes taught herself and other divine teachers. A couple of the classes being offered: Automatic Soul Writing, Ancestor Reverence & Connection, Introduction to Yoruba Orisha Tradition. To connect w/ Rev. I just find her words to be way less angry and more sensical than mine so I really hope you embrace this discussion and walk away with some lessons as I did.
Sarah Bowen talks about her new book Spiritual Rebel: A positively Addictive Guide To Finding Deeper perspective & Higher Purpose www.thisissarahbowen.com Sarah Bowen encourages people to explore their own personal spiritual style, most rooted perspectives, and life purpose. Rather than relying on adherence to a specific belief system, Spiritual Rebel guides readers to clarify the beliefs that are personally meaningful, redefine outdated concepts, mix and match practices, experience connection, and ask curious questions. Designed to create spiritual moments throughout the day, the practices invite healthful and heartful connections to self and others. For instance, on “Wonder-filled Wednesdays” exercises encourage readers to stop and contemplate the brilliance of life all around them. On “Seva Saturdays,” readers are given ideas for practicing selflessness. Each day readers chooses from a range of activities to try out including forest bathing, cat grazing, yawning, looking at art, or mindfully connecting with their community. We talk about What a spiritual journey encompassesWhy it is important to explore our belief periodicallyIt is all about “we” not “me”How your spiritual connection keeps you in the flow of the ForceHow to resolve any issues with religionHow not to be perfect and it is okayKirtan Kriya – how 12 minutes a day improves cognition and eases depression ( page 101 in the book)The Instant Timer Meditation AppThe definition of a spiritual rebelHow often to practice your spiritualityWhat does God-optional mean? I love flowers … and I love to grow beautiful plants. So naturally, I began to make the connection between self-care and that happy, contented feeling I get in my garden. Here are a few shots from the garden to share what I mean. This summer I’m especially excited about my ‘Violet’s Pride’ rose – kind of a nod to good old Downton Abbey. In this episode, I open with an essay that really gets at the state of Grace – the flow – that we can find in a simple activity like gardening. I share my own embrace of how to get into flow, and let go of the daily suffering in our lives. I’ve also interviewed a leading expert in the ‘fertile’ field of discovering your creativity through gardening. Fran Sorin has a lot to say about these things … and is the author of the definitive book about the healing value of digging in the dirt and growing veggies and flowers. Here’s what I learned in our chat: Evidence that at least 80 million of us are out of touch with our self-care Why gardening is relevant here and now The relationship between gardening and meditation How to create garden mojo EVEN when you live in an apartment in the city Proof that there is an actual ‘brain’ in plants Some easy, practical tips for watering that will put you back together, too Instant great garden-building tips Listen and enjoy … it’s a fun, nurturing chat! LINKS Digging Deep: Unearthing Your Creative Roots Through Gardening BIO Fran Sorin is a multi-disciplinary gardening and creativity expert and a veteran of the media-… From the moment that Fran decided she wanted to share her passion for gardening with a large audience-- and approached the local Fox TV station in Philadelphia about doing some gardening TV features--she became a fixture on the TV circuit. She spent years as a gardening authority on Philadelphia's Fox and NBC stations, was a regular gardening contributor on NBC's Weekend Today Show, and made several appearances on Lifetime, HGTV, Discovery, CNN, DIY, and Comcast. Fran is the CBS Radio News Garden Correspondent and has written dozens of articles about gardening and well-being for USA Weekend Magazine and Radius Magazine. She has spent more than twenty-five years working and developing community projects that have served the diverse community of West Philadelphia, including Radnor Recycles for Refugees and Shooting For The Stars, a not-for-profit organization and motivational program for elementary students. She has recently initiated a community garden and learning center on the grounds of a church in West Philadelphia. Fran is a graduate of The University of Chicago with Honors in Psychology and One Spirit Interfaith Seminary.

Interspirituality with Kurt Johnson Episode Recap Show Notes: • Early Years – Kurt discusses some of his early life events—including depression, scientific studies and much more—and how they led him to his life’s passion. • Wayne Teasdale – Kurt shares about his deep friendship with the wonderful Brother Wayne Teasdale, the impact he had on his life, and the continuing impact his work has in the world. • Interspirituality – In The Coming Interspiritual Age, Kurt writes, “Interspirituality is the natural discussion among human beings about what we are experiencing. In academic terms, it’s the intersubjective discussion among us all about who we are, why we are here, and where we are going. In the context of religion, interspirituality is the common heritage of humankind’s spiritual wisdom and the sharing of wisdom resources across traditions. In terms of our developing human consciousness, interspirituality is the movement of all these discussions toward the experience of profound interconnectedness, unity consciousness, and oneness.” Kurt and I explore what it means to be interspiritual and how it can deepen our spiritual paths. • Everyone’s A Mystic – Kurt and I explore our mutual friend Ken Wilber’s four quadrants of “I”, “We”, “It” and “It’s” and how they relate to each of us being a mystic. • Scientific Consciousness Studies – Kurt talks about scientific consciousness studies, discussing our basic experience of consciousness and “raw feeling”, quantum ideas of consciousness, and the future of unconsciousness.
