Clare rambles around Epping Forest with the new Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields. He was appointed in September 2024, taking over from Bear Grylls, and has a wealth of adventure experience under his belt. Dwayne was born in Jamaica and came to the UK at the age of six. He grew up in inner city London and says his formative years were wrapped up in social stigma, and he became a victim of both knife and gun crime. He managed to break away from this culture by spending time in outdoor spaces like Hackney Marshes, rediscovering a love of the outdoors he had felt deeply as a youngster in Jamaica. He remembers watching a TV interview with James Cracknell and Ben Fogle who were looking for a third team member to join a polar expedition. Although by the time he applied he was too late for selection, Dwayne did eventually join another trip and became the first black Briton to trek to the north pole. For Ramblings he leads Clare from the Scout Centre at Gilwell Park into and around Epping Forest. According to the Epping Forest Heritage Trust, it's the largest open space in London at just over 6000 acres stretching from Manor Park in east London to just north of Epping in Essex. Scouting Association Expels Volunteer for Advocacy Against Zionist Support | A Call to Chief Scout Bear Grylls | Resistance TVIn this thought-provoking episode of Resistance TV, we delve into the story of Pete Gregson, a dedicated volunteer with the 150th Craigalmond Scout Group, who was shockingly expelled by the Scout Association for his affiliation with the Campaign Against Bogus Antisemitism (CABA). We address the contentious issue of the Scouts' adherence to the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism, which has equated criticism of Israel to antisemitism.Join us as we examine the case from multiple perspectives, including Pete's own Chief Scout's award from Bear Grylls, who leads the Scouting Association. We explore the call to Bear Grylls, urging him to intervene and reconsider the decision to expel volunteers who campaign against Zionist support for Israel.Throughout the episode, we shed light on Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss of Neturei Karta's support for Pete, emphasizing that his advocacy is in no way anti-Jewish. We analyze the impact of Zionist complaints leading to Pete's suspension and subsequent expulsion, despite his ten years of selfless service and his prior avoidance of political discussions. This episode aims to ignite a dialogue about the intersection of activism, freedom of speech, and the Scout Association's policies. Join us in questioning whether the Scouts should reconsider their approach and ensure that volunteers are not unjustly targeted for expressing their viewpoints.Support Resistance TV: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/resistancetvFollow us;Twitter: https://twitter.com/ResistanceTVPodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ResistanceTVPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ResistanceTVPod/Threads: @ResistanceTVPod Follow Chris Williamson https://twitter.com/DerbyChrisW Check out more Videos from Resistance TV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXySk... Ladies n Genminminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Blue Peter, Scouting & Online Panto Legend Peter Duncan to The Good Listening To Show!Peter Duncan is a quintessential family entertainer, a veritable prolific-pants of creativity and versatility. He is an Actor, Presenter,  Adventurer, former Chief Scout, Pantomime King & Blue Peter Alumni. My first ever Theatre job was understudying Peter in David Wood's Whirligig Theatre show, “Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish” way back when, circa 1988!A wonderfully rich and textured conversation indeed. One of the things I was intrigued to find out more about was a recent blog post in which Peter said: "Just after dying on a cross and ascending to heaven on a wet pensioner's matinee (whilst appearing in "The Mystery Plays") I sat in my car and was overwhelmed.  I felt as if I had walked through an ethereal portal where nothing was inexplicable. ‘I was a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars, I had a right to be here' I always long to feel again that deep flash of knowing calm.More about Peter: Peter Duncan is a dreamer. And a thinker. And a daredevil. His life has never, ever been dull. His parents were in show business! They took him on their travels, all year long,  from summer seasons to winter pantomimes. Peter Duncan himself made his first public appearance as a teenager on stage at the Mermaid in London, playing Jim Hawkins in "Treasure Island". Then, at 16, he joined the Olivier Company at The National. It sounds as though he has either been working or travelling every day, ever since. On TV, in film on one side of the camera or the other, or on stage, in a play or in Panto. Or on the road with family or with a documentary camera  in Russia, USA, India or China. If Blue Peter made Peter Duncan famous, he has found more anonymous popular fame with new generations of children as a Pantomime Dame. The characters Peter Duncan has created  himself include Dame Trott, Billie Eyelash and most recently, Dame Dolly Donut! The anarchic humour of the Dame disguises the more serious side of Peter Duncan, who turns to Dahl for command of language, to Jung for a different view of dreams, to Gibran for poetic inspiration, to Goethe for a guide to bolder living, to Shakespeare for a gloomy summary of human existence, to Desiderata for a graceful exit. This is a man of mystery, yet who is distracted by the physicality of football or the presence of women. Who had a spiritual experience after playing Jesus in a matinee, on a wet afternoon in a car park in the provinces. Who, in his spare time, is a dystopian conceptual artist, with a dark view of the further future - yet a bright view of today! Someone who writes a blog - on an annual basis! A former wannabe hippie - who visits his barber even less frequently and had at the time of this interview, just renewed the ceiling lining of his summerhouse, on a whim, for the first time in 25 years. There is much more to Peter Duncan than meets the eye! For a small fee, you can see a trio of his latest pantomimes online, created during and after lockdown. They and this interview provide some fascinating inner glimpses of his personal complexity. Peter Duncan certainly deserves centre stage…

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show Hits Erie!

HURSTORIES

Written and researched by Adam Macrino [Evening News Inspired Music Intro written and recorded by Adam Macrino] Newscaster Voice: Hello everyone, and welcome to Hurststories. My name is Nathan de Panda. On this edition of Hurststories we bring you a story out of the town of Erie, Pennsylvania. On the night of Saturday, July 9th, 1898, the sleepy town was brought to life with the whoops and hollers of Cowboys and Natives as Buffalo Bill Cody and his Congress of Rough Riders paraded into town. The members of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show were greeted by the citizens of Erie, who lined the streets, as the long caravan of performers made their way into the town. This was one of 7 times that Buffalo Bill and his Rough Riders brought their skill to showcase to the town of Erie. Here to bring you more details is Hurststories correspondent, Brian Pedactor.[1] Narrator Voice: Thank you, Nathan. To understand what a spectacle this would have been for the citizens of the day, we at Hurststories want to familiarize the audience with the man called Buffalo Bill. Before obtaining the infamous nickname, William Frederick Cody, was born in Scott County, Iowa, in 1846. He migrated west with his father, where the young Cody was witness to an awful altercation between his father and a mob of pro-slavery sympathizers. An argument escalated out of control, resulting in the mortal wounding of Cody’s father. The London Times reported in William Cody’s obituary that when this occurred, “Young Cody turned to the assailant saying, ‘You have killed my father. When I’m a man I’ll Kill You.’”[2] [Announcement Chime] Public Service Announcement: Hurststories would like to take this opportunity to condemn revenge killing. We are a Catholic University and would not support revenge killing even to avenge our own father. [Ending Announcement Chime] Narrator: Cody relocated during the gold rush of the 1860’s but did not strike it rich. Instead he obtained a job as a package runner for the Pony Express. This was an extremely dangerous occupation due to the lawlessness of the West. Bandits would ambush package carriers during their trek, stealing the valuable parcels that they were carrying. It was this job that taught William Cody what it took to live out on the trails of the Wild West. Eventually, Cody would take on a job as a scout for a trapping expedition. It was during this expedition that William Cody was credited with killing his first bear. It is also during this expedition that Cody had an encounter with a Native that ended with violence.  The Native was killed, and Cody was adorned with the name “Boy Indian Slayer.” [3] [Announcement Chime] Public Service Announcement: Hurststories would like to take another moment to acknowledge the awful treatment that the Native Americans received, and if there was a way to go back and time and prevent that from happening, we at Hurstories would certainly do so. This has been another Hurststories Condemnation Moment. [End Announcement Chime] Narrator: During the Civil War, Cody joined up with the US Army. His reputation as a skilled horseman was confirmed as Cody ascended thru the ranks of the 5th Cavalry, achieving the rank of Chief Scout. Cody continued serving in the US Army after the War, earning the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars.  The rapid expansion of the railroad systems created a great demand for food supplies to feed the giant workforce that a project of that magnitude required. Contracts were offered from these railroad companies to anyone who could provide enough food to meet the demand.[4] Narrator: This will be how William Frederick Cody obtains his nom de guerre, Buff- Newscaster: Eh, Adam, what is that, nom de gur? Narrator: yes, it means a nickname. Newscaster: no no no, none of that Narrator: Ok, okay, this will be how William Frederick Cody gets his sobriquet, Buffalo Bil Newscaster: What! Now what is that? Narrator: Sobriquet, it’s synonymous with nick-name Newscaster: Listen buddy, no one’s ‘gonna know what these words mean. You sound condescending. Honestly your whole tone is coming off as condescending. Narrator: Wow, I didn’t know. I'm sorry. I just, wanted to spice it up, ya know. Put some pep on it. [Sad Music] Newscaster: Listen, I was kind of hard on you, go ahead, you can put a little pep on it. Just a little. Narrator: Ok, So, This will be how William Frederick Cody, the famed adventurer from Scott County Iowa, the man who slayed a bear with his own hands, the man who as a boy was called Boy Indian Slayer, for this next coming tale will be how that man will obtain his eternal cognomen, Buffalo Bill. Newscaster: At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" [Announcement Chime] Public Service Announcement: Sorry us again, We at Hurststories would like to take a moment to condemn the last thirty seconds of the podcast. It was far too silly and we promise not to do it again. This has been another, Hurststories Condemnation Moment.  [Ending Announcement Chime} Narrator: Right, So William Cody accepts the contract for supplying the Kansas Pacific Railway with meat for its employees while the railroad line is being constructed. Cody’s hunting prowess was forever immortalized in the fitting moniker, “Buffalo Bill”, as Cody killed 4,820 buffalo in 18 months. Newscaster: Now That is how he obtained his nickname. But why was he known to all Americans at that time and able to travel from town to town performing his little show for everyone. Narrator: These shows were not little, they very impressive. They were advertised as, “the most intensely interesting and strangest entertainment ever... dreamed of.” and, “...a mirror of heroic manhood.” Newscaster: Well. Narrator: Buffalo Bill’s shows would include luminaries from the American West. Sharpshooter married couple Annie Oakley and Frank Butler dazzled audiences with their feats of marks-person-ship. Sitting Bull with 20 members of his tribe joined the show for a time. Buffalo Bill’s show lasted for so many years that he had a rotating cast of the who’s who from the American West joining for brief stints as they pleased. Calamity Jane told tales of the past, Wild Bill Hickok, who was prone to bouts of stage fright, once shot at the spotlight operator for focusing the spotlight on the bashful performer during an early show. Native Americans were an integral part of the experience. Although they often portrayed the villain in re-enactments, famous Native Americans like Sitting Bull participated in these shows and this allowed them the ability to showcase their customs and way of life to interested audiences all over the world.  In fact, performers from all over the world were featured. One advertisement featured in the Erie Herald for a show in July of 1901 promises Cossacks, Boers, Beodouins and Britons, all wearing the uniform or dress of the nation or tribe from which they represent. These shows were living museums. They were very well attended because they showcased a lifestyle that was ceasing to exist. By the end of Buffalo Bill’s entertainment career, you could argue that it had disappeared. [5] Newscaster: No, I think we have done enough arguing today. And one thing we can all agree on here at Hurstories is, those Erie citizens certainly were entertained anytime Buffalo Bill came to town.  Narrator: Yes, We certainly can. Before we go Nathan, I would like to say some more about Buffalo Bill. You see, contrary to his rough and tumble attitude, Buffalo Bill despised being thought of as a brawler or a ruffian. He fought for justice and righteousness. One time another person named Buffalo Bill was shot by a lawman after stealing the sherrif’s horse in Pensicola, Florida. In response to the publication of this story, Buffalo Bill wrote to the New York Herald, telling them that the person who perpetrated such an act was a person different than himself, telling them “When I die it will be maintaining honor-that which constitutes the safeguard of society, whether it apply to man or to woman.” [6]  There was a nobility and grace that Buffalo Bill seemed to carry himself by. He knew the importance of reputation in these times and was careful to portray himself in an honorable light. That will be all for me. This has been a Hurststories special report. Newscaster: Excellent work, Brian. Brian Pedactor, everyone. I am Brian De Panda and from all of us here at Hurststories, ad libb’d goodnight. The history of B-P is naturally lengthy in detail. Knowing the brief history will help you gain insight as to the foundations of Scouting. Over 160 years ago on February 22nd (1857) Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell was born at home in London. His mother Henrietta Gace Powell and his father Professor Baden Powell an Oxford clergyman and academic lived in the Paddington area. By the time he was 8 years old, ‘Robert’ or ‘Stevie’ (Moms’ preferred name) wrote: “Laws for me when I am old”. B-P Loved nature and the outdoors. He was a pretty good artist and a resourceful student. On September 11, 1876, B-P received his army commission. Deployed with 13th Hussars in northern India. For the next 20 years, he was deployed all over Europe, Asia, and Africa. Germany, France, and Russia where he was spying for Great Britain. He developed Reconnaissance and Scouting training for the military. In October of 1899, B-P was deployed with 1000 troops in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War (South African War) in South Africa. Stationed at Mafeking with 18,000 enemy Duch troops surrounding it. While at Mafeking the book “Aids to Scouting for NCOs & Men” was published back in Great Britain. A “Cadet Corp” was formed from boys over 9 years. This developed into the “Patrol System”. Mafeking was under siege for 217 days without relief. B-P became a hero and promoted to Major-General. Returning home a few years later he was surprised that “Boys’ Brigades” had formed based on his book. The Brownsea Island Camp Experiment started on August 1, 1907. 20 Boys with 8 Adults, 4 Patrols over 8 days. The rest of 1907 “Scouting Scheme,” wrote the Scout Law, the ‘Crusade’ lecture tour. In 1908 Scouting for Boys was published (6 issues at 2 pence each)... As adult leaders in the largest youth movement in the world, we need to do some homework to fill out the rest of the Scouting story. Here is a timeline of events that were not covered in the video. 1909 The National Headquarters was set up in London, just ½ mile south of Buckingham Palace. 1909-1910 King Edward VII asked B-P to leave the army and do Scouting fulltime. 1910 The Boy Scouts of America became incorporated. 1912 B-P got married to Olave. 1912 King George V granted a Royal Charter to Scouting. 1914 The “Great War” started (First World War) Scouting helped the home front. 1916 Wolf Cubs started in England (known as Cub Scouts in the US in 1930). 1919 Gilwell Park was established (12 miles northeast of Buckingham Palace). 1920 First World Jamboree (3 miles west of Buckingham Palace). 1929 King George V conferred the title of 'Lord of Gilwell' on B-P 1932 Lord Somers appointed Chief Commissioner. 1937 World Jamboree (Netherlands) B-P gave the famous farewell speech. 1938 Moved to Nyeri Kenya for health reasons. 1939 B-P nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize along with others, including Hitler. The scandal led to no one being awarded that year. January 8, 1941 B-P Pasted away and was laid to rest at St Peter’s Churchyard. 1941 Lord Somers became ‘Chief Scout of the British Empire’. Only B-P was the ‘Chief Scout of the World’.

This week we sat down with Travis Cox, a veteran turned strength and conditioning coach for the San Antonio Spurs, turned business executive. Travis got real with us as they discussed how mentors, connections to the veteran community, his faith, and his work with non profit organizations has helped him to thrive. He served 8 years in the Reconnaissance community. If you are unfamiliar with what that means, which is an elite special operations unity within the marine corps. He served one deployment in Iraq as a point man & designated marksman in a Force Recon Direct Action team. He finished his time in the Marine Corps as the Chief Scout and headed up all sniper training within his recon unit. After returning from military service, like so many veterans Travis struggled to find a direction and found himself moving down a dark path with substance abuse. In the podcast he talks about his struggles with substance abuse and how he found his way back to health and happiness through recovery.

Amanda Mackenzie is the chief executive of Business in the Community - The Prince of Wales’ Responsible Business Network. Its 700 members seek to do business better - whether that is helping the environment, their own staff, or society at large. If they get it right, they might even boost levels of public trust in large enterprise. Mackenzie has over 25 years of commercial experience, including director roles at British Airways Airmiles, BT and British Gas. She joined Aviva as chief marketing officer to change its name from Norwich Union. Matt Hyde is chief executive of the Scouts, the fast-growing youth movement with 640,000 members in the UK. A Million Hands has reasserted the Scouts’ strength in volunteering while Skills for Life has taught youngster about teamwork and leadership. Hyde was formerly chief executive of the National Union of Students. Find out more @leadingpod or www.leadingpod.com

For the moment, it means Ralph Hasenhuttl's side still need to look over their shoulders at the relegation zone. Ben Stanfield (Host), Adam Leitch (Chief Sports Writer, Daily Echo) and Steve Grant (Owner of SaintsWeb), who were all at St. James Park, constructively look back on the key talking points. Alongside that, discussion covers Martyn Glover's impending appointment as Chief Scout, the 2019/20 season ticket prices and also previews both of the games taking place over the next 7 days - against Watford and Bournemouth.
