Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 451All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Pio of PietrelcinaOn Sept. 23, the Catholic Church remembers the Italian Franciscan priest St. Pio of Petrelcina, better known as Padre Pio and known for his suffering, humility and miracles. The man later known by these names was originally named Francesco Forgione, born to his parents Grazio and Maria in 1887. His parents had seven children, two of whom died in infancy. They taught the five surviving children to live their faith through daily Mass, family prayer of the rosary, and regular acts of penance. Francesco had already decided at a young age to dedicate his entire life to God. At age 10, he felt inspired by the example of a young Capuchin Franciscan, and told his parents: I want to be a friar with a beard. Francescos father spent time in America, working to finance his sons education so he could enter the religious life. On Jan. 22, 1903, Francesco donned the Franciscan habit for the first time. He took the new name Pio, a modernized Italian form of Pius, in honor of Pope St. Pius V. He made his solemn vows four years later, and received priestly ordination in the summer of 1910. Shortly after, he first received the Stigmata Christs wounds, present in his own flesh.Along with these mystical but real wounds, Padre Pio also suffered health problems that forced him to live apart from his Franciscan community for the first six years of his priesthood. By 1916 he managed to re-enter community life at the Friary of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he lived until his death. He handled many duties as a spiritual director and teacher, covering for brothers drafted into World War I.During 1917 and 1918, Padre Pio himself briefly served in a medical unit of the Italian army. He later offered himself as a spiritual victim for an end to the war, accepting suffering as a form of prayer for peace. Once again, he received the wounds of Christ on his body. They would remain with him for 50 years, through a succession of global conflicts. Against his own wishes, the friars reputation for holiness, and attending miracles, began to attract huge crowds. Some Church officials, however, denounced the priest and had him banned from public ministry in 1931. Pope Pius XI ended the ban two years later, and his successor Pius XII encouraged pilgrimages to Padre Pios friary.Known for patient suffering, fervent prayer, and compassionate spiritual guidance, Padre Pio also lent his efforts to the establishment of a major hospital, the Home to Relieve Suffering. Padre Pio died in 1968, and was declared a saint in 2002. Three years after his death, Pope Paul VI marveled at his simple and holy life in an address to the Capuchin Order.A worldwide following gathered around him ... because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from dawn to dusk and was it is not easy to say it one who bore the wounds of our Lord, Pope Paul explained. He was a man of prayer and suffering. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

It all started at a 10-watt radio station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana -- a young man behind the microphone with little ambition and less talent. . . . And 43 years later, well . . . it is what it is, 3 Chords & the Truth. I kid. Sort of. But what did start four decades ago at WBRH radio at Baton Rouge Magnet High School does live on today, on the Internet, in the form of the Big Show. Unsurprisingly, you'll hear a lot of what I was playing then on the program now -- because my generation did have the best music. The occasion for all this ruminating is a landmark edition of the podcast. This is No. 500. Five. Hundred. Shows. FOR A YEAR or so, Revolution 21 was the home of the brilliantly named Revolution 21 Podcast. On Jan. 11, 2008, that became 3 Chords & the Truth, and we've been plowing ahead ever since -- always eclectic, always adventurous and always trying to surprise you. Well, at least a little now and again. Being this is the 500th episode of the Big Show, we'll celebrate by giving you bonus podcast this week. You'll get a half hour more of the best music you'll find online -- lagniappe for just being here and sharing in No. 500. Did I mention this is the 500th program? It is, you know. I'll shut up now so you can enjoy in just a second. It's 3 Chords & the Truth, y'all. Be there. Aloha.
On Jan. 1, a revolution occurred in how the FAA tracks airplanes aloft. That's when more than 100,000 airplanes switched to the use of the Global Positioning System, instead of the ground radars in place for decades. David Gray was instrumental in making this happen, and he's a finalist in this year Service to America Medals program. The FAA's acting group manager of communications information and network programs, Gray joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin to discuss more.
110 – Welcome Republic Keeper Podcast 866-988-8311 info@republickeeper.com Flynn Hearing – one piece of news "Yes, I just wanted to make clear that it may be possible that the attorney general had before him information that he was not able to share with the court, and so what we put in front of the court were the reasons that we could, but it may not be the whole picture available to the executive branch," acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. "We gave three reasons," Wall said. "One of them was that the interests of justice were no longer served in the attorney general's judgment by the prosecution. The attorney general made that decision or that judgment on the basis of lots of information. Some of it is public and fleshed out in the motion. Some of it is not.” Graham – Letter to Chris Wray https://justthenews.com/accountability/russia-and-ukraine-scandals/graham-requests-info-about-2018-fbi-briefing-says-fbi Graham's letter identified three statements in the briefing outline he said were known by the FBI to be untrue. He said that the Steele Dossier's Primary Sub-source in 2017 made statements during interviews that undercut the validity of the dossier. "The result of those interviews was that the Primary Sub-source largely discredited the dossier and the way that Steele reported and characterized the information the Primary Sub-source had given him," Graham said in the letter. "Yet, in the outline of FBI’s briefing to the Intelligence Committee, it states that: (1) the Primary Sub-source 'did not cite any significant concerns with the way his reporting was characterized in the dossier to the extent he could identify it'; (2) '[a]t minimum, our discussions with [the Primary Sub-source] confirm that the dossier was not fabricated by Steele'; and (3) the Primary Sub-source 'maintains trusted relationships with individuals who are capable of reporting on the material he collected for Steele.'" "Each of these statements is clearly inaccurate based on information uncovered as part of my investigation into Crossfire Hurricane and the 2019 report on Crossfire Hurricane and the Carter Page FISA applications by the Office of the Inspector General," Graham said. "More importantly, however, is the fact that, based on its interviews with the Primary Sub-source, the FBI knew each of these statements was inaccurate at the time they were included in the outline for the briefing of the Intelligence Committee." Graham demanded that Wray provide a list of every FBI worker who participated in the creation of the 2018 briefing outline, as well as "all documents and communications that were relied upon to draft that outline." He also called for Wray to supply "the name and position of each individual at FBI who attended the briefing and the name and position of the primary briefer," as well as "all documents and communications that outline or were otherwise used by individuals at the FBI to brief congressional committees or members of Congress regarding Crossfire Hurricane, the Steele dossier, or the Carter Page FISA applications." https://justthenews.com/accountability/russia-and-ukraine-scandals/new-memos-disclose-relentless-pressure-hunter-biden "We had already offered our regrets to Blue Star. But they keep trying through every channel they can," State Department official Catherine Croft wrote July 29, 2016 in an email to George Kent, one of the department's top officials in the Kiev embassy. At the time, the U.S. embassy in Kiev was undergoing a transition as outgoing Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt was leaving for a new assignment and being replaced by Yovanovitch. And Burisma's founder, Mykola Zlochesky, was pressing to get long-running corruption investigations against his company dropped in Ukraine, something that could not happen easily without the tacit approval of the State Department. Two of Blue Star's highly connected Democratic players, Sally Painter and Karen Tramontano, made repeated overtures to meet with Pyatt and Yovanovitch, as did two former American diplomats, Daniel Fried and John Herbst, who were working at the Atlantic Council, the memos show. Kent tried to rebuff the late July 2016 meeting request. "Well, Sally Poynter (he misspelled her name) never did call me after Dan Fried tried to broker it," Kent wrote Croft back about one of the meeting requests. "I think that means he gave her a taste about what I would have said re: Zlochevsky, Burisma and Hunter Biden." For emphasis, Kent added a smiley face to the end of his email. State declined the July 2016 meeting after Yovanovitch instructed her staff to be "noncommittal," but Blue Star's efforts simply escalated, the memos show. A Blue Star official wrote State that Painter, a former Clinton administration lawyer, had pigeonholed Yovanovitch at her July 2016 confirmation hearing in the Senate. "Sally has worked with Ambassador Yovanovitch in the past and spoke with her at the nomination hearing about getting together before her departure for Ukraine," the Blue Star official wrote. "... Sally would greatly appreciate the chance to brief the Ambassador on a few vital topics regarding Ukraine." State memos show Blue Star also attended a private reception honoring Yovanovitch in August 2016 before she departed for Kiev By early September 2016, Burisma tried a different approach. Herbst, a former U.S. ambassador now working for the Atlantic Council, corresponded with Kent and had dinner to discuss Burisma and other matters, the memos show. Kent would eventually brief Yovanovitch on Herbst's overture. That same month, an American lawyer representing Burisma, John Buretta, wrote a lengthy letter to Yovanovitch suggesting the corruption accusations against the Ukrainian company were unwarranted and asking U.S. officials to reconsider their views on Hunter Biden's employer. After Trump unexpectedly won the November 2016 election, Tramontano finally scored a meeting with Yovanovitch on Dec. 8, 2016. A memo describing the meeting was provided to Just the News in a highly redacted form but made clear that Burisma was the subject. "An Atlantic Council member and Washington veteran, Tramontano informally represents Mykola Zlochevsky, the Burisma CEO, who has long been the target of law enforcement proceedings in Ukraine," the lone sentence left unredacted from the memo states. By late December 2016, Kent informed Yovanovitch that Burisma had managed to get Ukraine prosecutors to drop all investigations in return for the gas company paying a large tax penalty. On Jan. 13, 2017, seven days before Trump took office, Kent received a notification from Herbst that his Atlantic Council group had received and accepted a large donation from Burisma, which was now celebrating its success in getting the corruption probes shut down. "George, I wanted you to know before it becomes public that the Atlantic Council decided to accept support for its program from Burisma," Herbst wrote. "We looked at the matter closely and waited for over a month. Information provided to us by the Cravath lawyer for Burisma in the London case was an important factor, although some uneasiness remains."

Its stunning features make it a "software invention" rather than a typical example of "software development." Software engineer Fred Williams discusses the source code published below with this RSR show summary, and the truncated version of Display.exe, below, which runs in your browser. Top Obama administration officials purportedly requested to "unmask" the identity of former national security adviser Michael Flynn during the presidential transition period, according to a list of names from that controversial process made public.https://youtu.be/65V9DDk2ZjwThe declassified list specifically showed officials who “may have received Lt. Gen Flynn’s identity in response to a request processed between 8 November 2016 and 31 January 2017 to unmask an identity that had been generically referred to in an NSA foreign intelligence report.”"I declassified the enclosed document, which I am providing to you for your situational awareness," Grenell wrote to the GOP senators in sending along with the list.“Each individual was an authorized recipient of the original report and the unmasking was approved through NSA’s standard process, which includes a review of the justification for the request,” the document said. “Only certain personnel are authorized to submit unmasking requests into the NSA system. In this case, 16 authorized individuals requested unmasking for [REDACTED] different NSA intelligence reports for select identified principals.”The document added: “While the principals are identified below, we cannot confirm they saw the unmasked information. This response does not include any requests outside of the specified time-frame.”The list revealed that then-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power made unmasking requests seven times between Nov. 30, 2016, and Jan. 11, 2017. The list revealed that Clapper made three requests from Dec. 2, 2016, through Jan. 7, 2017; and that Brennan made two requests, one on Dec. 14 and one on Dec. 15, 2016. Comey also made a request on Dec. 15, 2016. On Jan. 5, 2017, McDonough made one request, and on Jan. 12, 2017, Biden made one request. The list also includes then-FBI Director James Comey, then-CIA Director John Brennan, then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and Obama's then-chief of staff Denis McDonough.https://www.spreaker.com/user/9922149/list-of-officials-who-sought-to-unmask-fhttps://gorightnews.com/list-of-officials-who-sought-to-unmask-flynn-released_-biden-comey-obama-chief-of-staff-among-th/
In 1968, following a wave of urban uprisings, politicians worked to end the practice of redlining by passing the Housing and Urban Development Act. While the act was meant to encourage mortgage lenders and the real estate industry to treat black homebuyers equally, the disaster that came after revealed that racist exclusion hadn’t been eradicated, but rather transformed into a new phenomenon of predatory inclusion. On Jan. 24, 2020, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, assistant professor of African American studies at Princeton University, discussed her new book Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership, as part of the Matrix Lecture series at UC Berkeley. Her book, which covers the time period from the 1968 Housing and Urban Development Act to the 1974 Housing and Community Development Act, exposes how exploitative real estate practices continued well after housing discrimination was banned.Listen to the talk and read the transcript on Berkeley News. Already an experienced session player, by the late 1960s funk guitar icon Dennis Coffey became a member of the Funk Brothers studio band.He played on dozens of recordings for Motown Records, and introduced a hard rock guitar sound to Motown record producer Norman Whitfield's recordings, including distortion, Echoplex tape-loop delay, and wah-wah; most notably heard on "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations. He played on numerous other hit records of the era including No. 1 singles like Edwin Starr's "War," Diana Ross & The Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Freda Payne's No. 3 hit (No. 1 in the U.K.) "Band of Gold."In 1971, Coffey recorded "Scorpio," a million-selling instrumental single that peaked in the U.S. at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The instrumental track featured former Motown "funk brother" Bob Babbitt on bass. On Jan. 8, 1972, Coffey became the first white artist to perform on TV's Soul Train, playing "Scorpio." That record received a gold disc awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 1971.The follow-up in 1972 was "Taurus," both credited to Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band. Since then, he has recorded several solo albums, most of them for the Sussex and Westbound labels. While at Sussex Records, Coffey arranged and produced along with Mike Theodore the million-selling "Nice To Be With You" by the group Gallery. In addition, Coffey scored the blaxploitation film, Black Belt Jones (1974).Coffey was interviewed in the 2002 film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, which told the story of Funk Brothers and explained that he had sold his Fender Stratocaster to buy a Gibson Firebird after he heard Eddie Willis of Funk Brothers play it during a Motown session. Under the guise of a “traffic study” the two limited Fort Lee motorists’ access to the George Washington Bridge--the busiest bridge in the world--over the period of four days coinciding with the local school district’s first week of school. Baroni and Kelly were indicted in 2015 for conspiracy to obtain by fraud, knowingly convert, or intentionally misapply property of an organization receiving federal benefits, the underlying offense itself (codified at 18 U.S.C. § 666(a)(1)(A)), conspiracy to commit wire fraud, actual wire fraud, and conspiracy against civil rights. A jury convicted both defendants on all counts. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit reversed and vacated the civil rights convictions, but affirmed all other judgments of conviction. The Supreme Court subsequently granted certiorari, however, to consider whether a public official can “defraud” the government of its property by advancing a public policy reason for an official decision that was not actually the public official’s subjective reason for making the decision. To discuss the case, we have Erin Sheley, associate professor of law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.As always, the Federalist Society takes no particular legal or public policy positions. For decades Minnesota has had one of the largest academic achievement gaps between white and Black students. Millions of dollars and numerous initiatives have been created to address this issue, with a multitude of stakeholders. However, the gap persists. On Jan. 13, 2020, the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank sponsored “Children First: A Community Conversation on Educating All Children.” The conversation was focused on a proposal to change the state constitution to make it include providing a high-quality public education “a paramount duty” of the state; the proposed amendment would go further in compelling lawmakers to address achievement gaps than does the current constitutional language. Retired state Supreme Court Justice Alan Page and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari proposed this amendment to the state constitution’s education clause with the goal of closing some of the largest achievement gaps in the nation. Dr. Sylvia Bartley talks with Justice Alan Page and Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari about the state of education in Minnesota and their proposal to drive change.
On Jan. 23, 2020, Jemele Hill, a staff writer for the Atlantic and host of the podcast Jemele Hill is Unbothered, spoke at UC Berkeley's Cal Performances about her career at the intersection of sports, race and culture in the U.S. In conversation with with KALW's radio host and reporter, Hana Baba, Hill touched on the NFL and Colin Kaepernick, what it's like reporting on sports as a black woman and how her life changed after President Trump tweeted about her."I mean, the NFL owners are spineless," Hill told Baba. "And I knew Colin Kaepernick would never play in the NFL the moment Donald Trump said his name... One of the few things that a lot of people unfortunately agree with the president about is that Colin Kaepernick should not be taking a knee. So, he [Trump] knows every time he says his [Kaepernick's] name, that it is giving him a level of universal support ... that he's doesn't experience usually."And so, what does that say about people in this country? I'm also old enough to remember that we just celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, commemorated him. And the same people I saw talking about how great Dr. King was for his nonviolent protest, are also the same people who think Colin Kaepernick doesn't deserve to play in the NFL? ... But the NFL, as we have seen in the case with Muhammad Ali, as we have seen the case in a lot of history, 20 years from now, they'll be telling a different story. They'll act like all of this never happened."Read the transcript and listen to the conversation on Berkeley News. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Trump administration made big news recently — and it wasn’t about impeachment. On Jan. 31, the White House announced that it was cancelling the policy that prohibited using anti-personnel landmines outside the Korean peninsula. The subject has been a fraught issue since the early 1990s, when civil society began to respond to the tragic consequences — particularly in the developing world — of the proliferation of landmines. The Clinton administration was a motivating force behind the Ottawa Convention, which banned the use of anti-personnel landmines worldwide, although it didn’t sign the treaty. The Bush administration argued that developing and deploying “smart mines,” that self-destruct after a period time, was consistent with U.S. national interests and humanitarian concerns. Under President Barack Obama, however, the United States committed to implement all of the elements of the Ottawa Convention except on the Korean peninsula, which poses a unique challenge to American defense planners. To discuss the issue, Ryan Evans was joined by David E. Johnson of the RAND Corporation, Stephen Pomper of the International Crisis Group and formerly of the Obama administration, Luke O’Brien of War on the Rocks, and Mary Wareham of Human Rights Watch.

It’s become commonplace to open up our weekly email from ASI and PPAI these days and see some news about industry consolidation, whether it’s a supplier buying another supplier or a distributor joining forces with another distributor. On Jan 29, it was announced that Halo had acquired Axis Promotions, the well known distributor agency based in midtown Manhattan. While these announcements are no longer surprising, the rate of consolidation is unique to this time in the industry and that’s part of what we want to explore in this conversation. On our program today, we welcome Larry Cohen, CEO of Axis Promotions and Marc Simon, CEO of Halo. And while Johanna is a co-host, she’s doing double duty today as she’s also an employee at Axis, heading up their Chicago office.

On Jan. 17, ROTC cadets from Wright State University spent several hours at Mini University, teaching preschool and pre-kindergarten children about the American flag. Cadets taught students the Pledge of Allegiance, what the stars and stripes on the American flag represent, colors of the flag and how to properly respect the flag during the national anthem. “I think it’s important for these kids to learn about where they’re growing up,” said cadet Jody Berry, a senior mechanical engineering student. Mini U staff prepared the students for the cadets visit by reading the book “F is for Flag” by author Wendy Cheyette Lewison. “The kids were definitely excited,” said Michelle Stoffa, Air Force ROTC commander and professor of aerospace studies. RaNae Street, the program administrator at Mini University invited ROTC cadets to Minu U after realizing the schools tattered flag needed to be replaced. “I really hope the students will gain that level of respect and be able to honor the country that they live in,” said Street. At the end of the visit, students watched with their hands over their hearts as cadets sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and raised a new American flag on the 25-foot-high flagpole near the entrance of the school. “It’s a great symbol of unity and the importance of being together, and they will see that every day when they walk through the doors,” said Street.

How could any free state ever give up freedom (derived from its own people) and allow control of volition, and laws put in place that keep people from choice? How could that ever be allowed to happen in the first place? On Jan. 7th, I gave testimony, along with many other Wisconsinites, to the Assembly health Committee in favor of a heath freedom bill to protect the right to practice holistic medicine and access to it. There are eleven states in the nation that have a health freedom laws.: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Maine. Is your state one of these? Approximately twenty additional states have introduced this type of legislation. The day Russell Frost and two former American soldiers were kidnapped was an unusual one, even by the standards of 2016 Baghdad. On Jan. 15, as the battle against Islamic State raged across the country, Frost and his two fellow contractors — former U.S. Army soldiers Amr Mohamed and Waiel el-Maadawy — found an interpreter to assist in their government mission of training coalition forces. The interpreter was a strange one, Mohamed said, offering the men liquor and women in an area where such things at the time could lead to death. Against their better judgment, the three men met at the interpreter’s house to finalize a working relationship over tea. As night began to fall, Mohamed insisted they leave. When the Americans attempted to do so, they were surrounded by dozens of armed men, members of a Shiite militia supported by cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. What followed was a horrific, 31-day ordeal in which the three — accused by their captors of being CIA operatives — were brutally tortured and imprisoned in inhumane conditions. It was the first kidnapping of Americans in the country since 2011 and while it was widely reported, the reason why the men where kidnapped by a faction ostensibly working with U.S. forces — and why it took so long for them to be released — remains murky. This episode of Force for Hire welcomes Mohamed to talk about the ordeal and its fallout. Frost died in November 2017 of complications from the kidnapping and torture. We’re proud to have Frost’s family on this episode to talk about how his death has impacted them and what they’re doing to help ensure the sacrifices of military contractors aren’t being forgotten. podcast@stripes.com

Over the past two years, the Trump administration has been grappling with how to handle the transition to the next generation of mobile broadband technology. With spending expected to run into hundreds of billions of dollars, the administration views it as an ultra-high-stakes competition between U.S. and Chinese companies, with enormous implications both for technology and for national security. Top officials from a raft of departments have been meeting to hash out the best approach. But there’s been one person at some of the discussions who has a different background: He’s Donald Trump Jr.’s hunting buddy. Over the past two decades, the two have trained their sights on duck, pheasant and white-tailed deer on multiple continents. (An email from another Trump Jr. pal characterized one of their joint duck-hunting trips to Mexico years ago as “muy aggresivo.”) Tommy Hicks Jr., 41, isn’t a government official; he’s a wealthy private investor. And he has been a part of discussions related to China and technology with top officials from the Treasury Department, National Security Council, Commerce Department and others, according to emails and documents obtained by ProPublica. In one email, Hicks refers to a meeting at “Langley,” an apparent reference to the CIA’s headquarters. Hicks’ financial interests, if any, in the matters he has discussed aren’t clear. The interests are much more apparent when it comes to at least one of his associates. Hicks used his connections to arrange for a hedge fund manager friend, Kyle Bass — who has $143 million in investments that will pay off if China’s economy tanks — to present his views on the Chinese economy to high-level government officials at an interagency meeting at the Treasury Department, according to the documents. Hicks is hardly the first private-sector power broker to emerge in a presidential administration, but he may represent a new subspecies: The Friend of the President’s Kid. In fact, Hicks’ influence and career overwhelmingly hinge on two people: Trump Jr., his friend of about two decades, and, first and foremost, Hicks’ father. In a roughly 20-year career, Hicks has spent 17 of them working for investment funds and sports teams owned by his wealthy financier dad, Thomas Hicks Sr., and the other three working for a client of his father. The generally privileged life of the younger Hicks has been speckled with occasional instances of misbehavior, one of them serious. At age 18, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault, reduced from an original charge of felony aggravated assault, after he and two others were arrested in the beating of a fellow high school student at a party. (The victim was also kicked in the face during the assault, according to people familiar with the case. He told police that one of the three assailants — he didn’t say which — asked him, “What is your name, faggot?”) The criminal conviction did not prevent Hicks from being admitted to the University of Texas, where his father was an alumnus, a member of the Board of Regents and soon thereafter the first chairman of the University of Texas Investment Management Company, which manages the school’s endowment and other assets. As an adult, friends say, Hicks’ carousing ways and occasional belligerent outbursts led some in his circle to bestow a heavily ironic nickname: “Senator Hicks.” His tenure as a director of the soccer team his father owned in Liverpool, England, a decade ago ended right after an email he sent to a heckling fan — “Blow me fuckface. Go to Hell. I’m sick of you.” — surfaced publicly. Friends say Hicks has matured, particularly since he married and had three daughters. He has risen quickly in recent years. Hicks leveraged his Dallas financial network to become a top Trump campaign fundraiser in 2016 and a vice chairman of the inaugural finance committee; in January, he was named co-chairman of the Republican National Committee. His friends say he is motivated by patriotism. Hicks also played a behind-the-scenes role, according to two people familiar with the matter and an account by a Turkish journalist, in the freeing last year of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor who was detained for two years by the Turkish government on what the U.S. government viewed as phony charges of spying and helping terrorists. Even before becoming the second highest-ranking GOP official, Hicks was a frequent White House guest. He liked to have lunch in the White House mess with his half sister, who worked for a time in the communications operation. (The family is not related to Hope Hicks, the former White House communications director.) Hicks would then stroll the halls, according to a former senior administration official, dropping in to offices for impromptu chats with various officials, including Jared Kushner. Those sorts of connections have given Hicks a convening power, the ability to call together multiple officials. “He basically opened the door for having a conversation with people who I didn’t know but needed to know,” said Robert Spalding, a former senior director for strategic planning at the National Security Council during the Trump administration. The efforts, detailed in hundreds of pages of government emails and other documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, show that Hicks had access to the highest levels of government to influence policymaking in ways that could lead to painful economic outcomes for the Chinese — and a potentially lucrative result for Hicks’ hedge fund friend, Bass. “When somebody comes in like this, a hedge fund manager who has an interest in the viability of China’s economy, you’re giving them an opportunity to influence policy,” said Virginia Canter, a former ethics lawyer at the Treasury Department who now serves as chief ethics counsel for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog group. (CREW has sued Donald Trump for accepting emoluments from foreign governments.) “The question is why?” Hicks’ unusual role as a nongovernment employee who opened doors on behalf of both industry and others, Canter said, put him in a gray zone of ethics and lobbying regulations. “He’s acting in a lobbyist role when he may fall outside the lobbyist disclosure rules, and it’s not clear how he benefits financially,” she said. “So the question is: What’s he getting out of it? What are his friends getting out of it? And is the government processing it in a way that ensures the public benefits?” Bass presented his views on China’s banking system in the office of Heath Tarbert, an assistant secretary at Treasury in charge of international markets and investment policy and a powerful intergovernmental committee that reviews foreign investments in the U.S. for national security concerns. Among the officials at the meeting with Tarbert were Bill Hinman, the director of the division of corporation finance at the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Ray Washburne, a wealthy Dallas restaurant owner and family friend of Hicks’ who was nominated by Trump to head the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Hicks and Bass, both Dallas residents and longtime denizens of the financial community there, have invested together since at least 2011, according to securities filings and court records. They’ve owned shares of a publicly traded communications-technology manufacturer. And they were among the biggest creditors to the bankrupt law enforcement contracting company run by Chris Kyle, the ex-Navy SEAL portrayed by Bradley Cooper in “American Sniper.” The managing director of a new investment fund started by Hicks had previously advised Bass on the successful stock-shorting of a Texas real estate lender, according to corporate filings and court papers from a lawsuit in state court in Dallas. But it’s not clear if Hicks or his family have an investment in Bass’ China-related funds. Reached twice on his cellphone, Hicks declined to be interviewed by ProPublica. In the second call, in June, Hicks didn’t dispute that he and his family have invested in Bass’ funds. But when asked to detail their business relationship, he cut the conversation short. “I’ve got to run. Let me see if I can get back to you,” Hicks said before hanging up. He didn’t call back. Weeks later, after ProPublica followed up with questions to the RNC, a spokesman responded by emailing a “statement attributed to Tommy Hicks.” It read: “As a businessman, I passionately supported causes I believed in and, if appropriate, would sometimes meet with government officials to promote them. There is nothing wrong with that. I have taken every precaution during my time as Co-Chair of the RNC to ensure there is no conflict of interest between my job here and any personal businesses.” (The spokesperson also emailed a statement on behalf of the RNC: “Tommy has done an outstanding job working on behalf of President Trump and his agenda.”) Bass, who made his name and fortune by betting against subprime mortgages before the crash and is known for large bets that economies or certain macro trends will turn downward, declined to comment. “I’m not interested in talking with you about my friends or any meetings I have or haven’t had privately with anyone,” he wrote in an email. In a subsequent message, Bass wrote that any suggestion “that we had corrupt intentions in meeting with Treasury officials... is categorically false and defamatory and could negatively affect our business.” An administration official briefed on the Bass meeting at the Treasury downplayed it as “strictly a listening session.” He said Bass did not ask the attendees to take any actions, nor did the attendees divulge anything about U.S.-China policy. Government ethics officers vetted the federal employees for any conflicts and found none, the official said. He acknowledged that the review didn’t include an examination of any financial relationship between Hicks and Bass. Spalding said the conversation centered primarily on Bass’ analysis of publicly available records on the Chinese financial system. “I think the thing that I’ve discovered over the past years is that the information in the private sector is better than anything we have in government,” Spalding said of Bass’ presentation. “You have to reach out to where the expertise is. In our country, that’s where the talent is.” An SEC spokeswoman declined to comment. Washburne, now out of government, didn’t respond to emails seeking comment. Bass has become a vocal advocate for an aggressive U.S. policy toward China. On Twitter and on cable business channels he’s denounced everything from the country’s Communist Party government to its business practices. Securities filings show Bass raised $143 million from about 81 investors in two funds — investments that would benefit if China’s currency were devalued or the country faced credit or banking crises. In April, in a letter to his investors, Bass wrote that his company, Hayman Capital Management, was positioned for coming problems in Hong Kong and was set up to “maintain a massive asymmetry to a negative outcome in Hong Kong and/or China.” Hicks’ work on the 5G initiative was extensive. Over just a few months in late 2017 and 2018, records show, he was part of an informal group led by then NSC official Spalding, that advocated for a strategy in which the federal government would plan out a national policy for 5G. One memo described their goal as the “equivalent of the Eisenhower National Highway System — a single, inherently protected, information transportation superhighway.” The group conducted multiple meetings and briefings. For example, Hicks, Spalding and others traveled to Samsung Electronics’ Dallas-area offices for one meeting in January 2018. That same month Hicks attended a 5G meeting that he’d arranged with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Commerce plays a key role in the future of 5G since a division within the agency manages government spectrum and another maintains a list of companies the government believes are, or will become, national security threats. Companies that end up on that list can be effectively shut out from global deal-making. The meeting with Ross focused heavily on the threat of China, said Ira Greenstein, who served as a White House aide and was part of Spalding’s 5G crew. Hicks was one of a dozen nongovernment employees, including executives from Wells Fargo, Nokia, Ericsson and Google, that Spalding sent reading materials to ahead of a 5G discussion in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Copied on the email were top Commerce Department officials, a Booz Allen Hamilton contractor and a senior adviser for cybersecurity and IT modernization at the White House Office of Science and Technology. On the agenda? “Mid Band vs High Band” spectrum, “security,” “supply chain,” “financing” and other critical issues. Hicks wasn’t just a passive observer. On Jan. 2, 2018, the managing director of OPIC, which provides financial backing to American companies expanding into foreign markets, emailed Spalding and others to say that the CEO of a satellite company called OneWeb had a plan to provide worldwide 5G coverage by 2027. Hicks fired back a note from his iPhone. “2027 is too late,” he wrote. “Let’s discuss as a smaller group tomorrow.” Spalding was forced out of the West Wing in early 2018 after a draft 20-page briefing memo he authored proposing a government-organized national 5G network was leaked, then panned as an attempt to nationalize the wireless broadband industry. Trump has not pursued such an initiative, ultimately deferring to wireless carriers to bid on publicly maintained spectrum and develop their own networks as has traditionally been the case. Still, the administration has made significant efforts to counter Chinese influence in 5G and related technologies, which are said to be critical for industries such as driverless cars, artificial intelligence, machine learning and much more. In May the Commerce Department barred Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei from doing business in the U.S. for national security reasons. And the top Department of Defense official in charge of acquisitions also recently announced the creation of a government-approved private marketplace to pair American private equity firms with U.S. technology companies producing products with national security applications to keep Chinese money out of 5G. It isn’t clear what influence, if any, Hicks had in those decisions. But his profile is only rising. In April, he led a Republican delegation to Taiwan alongside a U.S. government delegation. Hicks met with the country’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, who has lately been positioning her country’s corporations as safer providers of 5G equipment than those in China. Tsai thanked the U.S. for selling arms to Taiwan. She asked Hicks to convey her regards to the Trumps.

On Jan 6, 2020 the karmic Lord Saturn will be conjunct (in an exact alignment) with the anvil of transformation, Pluto - all of this and much more happening in Capricorn. This alignment hasn't occurred since....are you ready...1517! Why? Because Pluto moves so slowly, these two planets of soul purpose haven't been together in Saturn's home sign of Capricorn since then. What does all this mean and how could it affect us? On this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the guys start the show off talking about some new sound effects that Kyle has been working on and his recent failed Turkey hunt. After the discussion about hunting and how big of an idiot Kyle is, they start with some news. First off, a person by the name of DG recalls a strange sighting they had one night around 2:00am on the west side of Joliet, Illinois. The person was just chillin watching some television with the windows open when they heard what sounded like a woman screaming. Upon closer inspection the person saw some large humanoid with black wings perched on a neighbor's roof! Then, a Utah man claims he was just looking through his spotting scope in his backyard when he spotted something strange on one of the nearby mountain sides. He grabbed his phone and shot a short clip of something upright, hominid looking walking up a ridge. Was it Bigfoot? The man who shot the footage certainly thinks so. After the break Kyle brings up some more of these strange sightings of the Black Stick Man! The Black Stick Men are a species of strange humanoid beings rarely seen by humans. They are often described as being similar to typical cartoon stick men, making them some of the strangest beings ever encountered. Black Stick Men are often described as being exactly identical to the typical cartoon stick man: tall, thin, and black in color. They are said to move in an odd galloping motion; some are even said to float above the ground. Supposedly they are two-dimensional creatures, meaning they are exactly the same regardless of what angle they are viewed from. A variant kind of enromous stick men have occassionally been seen in the UK. Then Cam brings up the true story behind the famous song Phantom 309. On Jan. 29, 1963, John William “Pete” Trudelle drove a tanker truck to the Chelsea River Bulk Petroleum Facility north of Boston to load up on 4,600 gallons of gasoline. Trudelle turned around and started to make the several-hour trip back to Keene, New Hampshire, near the eastern bank of the Connecticut River, just across from the state of Vermont. He started up Route 1, just north of Boston in Saugus, Mass., on the Newburyport Turnpike. The intersection of Route 129 and Route 1 in Saugus was treacherous. Trudelle passed under the bridge, where a blind spot impeded drivers as they went into a dip. Little did Trudelle know that there was a car stopped under the bridge, where it was waiting for a school bus to pick up children. There was no way Trudelle could stop. Rather than plowing into the back of the two vehicles stopped, he crashed the tanker into the bridge abutment. Trudelle was unable to escape the cab as the 4,600 gallons of gas erupted. The driver of the car, Robert Mayer of Stamford, Connecticut, tried to escape, but was overtaken by the flames. The bus was engulfed in flames, but the six children and the driver on board had time to escape. About 10 seconds after the passengers and driver got out, the bus burst into flames. On Jan. 9, 2018, Maggie Nichols released a statement informing the world that she, too, had been sexually assaulted by former USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar. She also let the world know that she was the one who had been identified only as “Athlete A” in the reports of Nassar’s actions, which he inflicted under the guise of medical treatment on more than 300 victims. She did it to let everyone know that he did not do this to Athlete A, he did it to Maggie Nichols. Maggie Nichols did this for all young girls who approach her for photos or autographs whenever she appears in public. She did it for the strangers who also were victims of abuse and feel ashamed, not empowered. From the time she was 3, Maggie Nichols spent countless hours in the gym to shape herself into a world-class gymnast. Maggie missed time with friends and holidays with family to pursue that dream. But with all this training come injuries, Maggie knew about injuries as she had to deal with a lot of injuries throughout her career. But one injury brought her under the care of Dr. Larry Nassar. Listen as Maggie tells her story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/linklete/support
